Islam is very particular about this. For example, you can not change the surname of your adopted child to your own. It is a fundamental rule in Islam. The adopted child must continue to bear his/her father's name because the One who is all Wise, Allahu ta'ala, has chosen to weave the matrix of human genealogy together based on the identity of the father. Fundamental. No one is allowed to steal the paternity of a child even by adoption. So adoption was not banned. It is the paternity fraud associated with it that got banned.
