My opinion is in support of Islam though I hope you get it. Essentially, because Islam declares a separation between cousins, it also lets us know that there is an attraction between them as a result of that separation. That is why, their free mixing is prohibited but also their marriage is allowed. To me, this is the truth. Societal behaviours confirm that too except you want to overlook them.

About being abominable, well, Islam lets cousins know their blood have separated. Without this separation, a lot of things go on among cousins even in societies where they have been taught that they are brothers and sisters. Islam lets you know that the attraction is there between them and so the prohibition for their close companies.
Some of the scholars try to explain that under this scenario it is permitted, but hey, the stronger opinion is that it is haram by default.
