Religion / Pope Calls On Moroccans To Fight Fanaticism by guru03(m): 3:52am On Mar 31, 2019 |
Pope Francis has called on Moroccans to fight fanaticism during a visit to promote inter-faith dialogue. He was met at the airport by King Mohammed VI and driven to the capital Rabat, where he gave a speech. The pontiff is to meet migrants and Muslim leaders, and hold a Mass for the country's small Roman Catholic community this weekend. The Vatican considers the papal visit a continuation of last month's historic trip to the United Arab Emirates. Islam is the state religion in Morocco. To a crowd of thousands, Pope Francis said it was "essential to oppose fanaticism" and for the faithful to "live as brothers". He defended "freedom of conscience" and "religious freedom" as fundamental for human dignity, and said it was "necessary" to make the "appropriate preparations of future religious guides". Since 2015, 1,600 young Moroccans are estimated to have been radicalised and joined jihadists fighting for the Islamic State group. King Mohammed said the key to tackling radicalisation of young people was to increase religious education. Image copyright AFP/Getty Images Image caption The pope (l) will meet with Muslim leaders and migrants over the weekend The spiritual leader of the world's 1.3 billion Catholics was invited to the North African nation by its king, Moroccan authorities said, as part of the "development of inter-religious dialogue". Moroccan law guarantees freedom to worship. But Christians - who make up less than 1% of the country's 33 million people - say they are not allowed to worship openly and face discrimination. Under the penal code, you can be put in prison for trying to convert a Muslim to Christianity. The pontiff is also visiting a school for imams and a migrant centre run by a Catholic charity, as Europe and North Africa continue to wrestle with the issue of migration. Travel / Leaked Report: Ethiopian Airlines Crash by guru03(m): 3:43am On Mar 31, 2019 |
Details have begun to emerge of the final moments of an Ethiopian Airlines flight which crashed three weeks ago. An anti-stalling system on the plane, a Boeing 737 Max, has been blamed for the disaster which killed all 157 people on board. Soon after take-off - and just 450ft (137m) above the ground - the aircraft's nose began to pitch down. One pilot, according to the Wall Street Journal, said to the other "pitch up, pitch up!" before their radio died. The plane crashed only six minutes into its flight. 'Catastrophic failure' The Wall Street Journal - which says it's spoken to people close to the ongoing investigation - says the information it has "paints a picture of a catastrophic failure that quickly overwhelmed the flight crew". Leaks this week from the crash investigation in Ethiopia and in the US suggest an automatic anti-stall system was activated at the time of the disaster. The Manoeuvring Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) flight-control feature was also implicated in a fatal crash involving a Lion Air flight in Indonesia last October. The Boeing 737 Max went down shortly after take-off from Jakarta, killing all 189 people on board. Image copyright Getty Images Image caption All 157 passengers and crew on board were killed during the crash earlier this month An investigation of the Lion Air flight suggested the anti-stall system malfunctioned, and forced the plane's nose down more than 20 times before it crashed into the sea. The Ethiopian authorities have already said there are "clear similarities" between the Lion Air incident and the Ethiopian Airlines crash. The airline and authorities have refused to comment on leaks from the investigation. Concerns about the Boeing 737 Max have led to a worldwide grounding of the plane. System update Boeing has redesigned the software so that it will disable MCAS if it receives conflicting data from its sensors. As part of the upgrade, Boeing will install an extra warning system on all 737 Max aircraft, which was previously an optional safety feature. Neither of the two planes that were involved in the fatal crashes carried the alert systems, which are designed to warn pilots when sensors produce contradictory readings. The aircraft update is designed to ensure the MCAS will no longer repeatedly make corrections when a pilot tries to regain control. Boeing is also revising pilot training to provide "enhanced understanding of the 737 MAX" flight system and crew procedures. Image copyright Getty Images Image caption Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the accident, which took place just minutes after the plane took off from Bole Aiport in Ethiopia Earlier this week, Boeing said that the upgrades were not an admission that the system had caused the crashes. Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the accidents, but a preliminary report from Ethiopian authorities is expected within days. Boeing has tried to restore its battered reputation, while continuing to insist the 737 Max is safe. Sources: https://www.bbc.com/news/business-47759966 |
Crime / BREAKING: Confusion As Mother Allegedly Kills Her Son, Commits Suicide In Ayobo by guru03(m): 3:35am On Mar 31, 2019 |
Lagos – Tragedy struck in the sleepy town of Ayobo on Saturday when a middle-aged school teacher and mother of one allegedly killed her three-year-old son before committing suicide on Saturday evening. The woman, whose name is withheld as police investigations continue, was a school teacher at Tri-fets Private School, also in Ayobo. The deceased, who resided at No 1, Femi Olaniran Street, off Ferguson Osagie Road, before her sudden death, was said to be financially comfortable as her husband was based abroad and had no known trouble that may have led her to kill her son and then take her own life. According to a close family source who spoke to INDEPENDENT, the case has been reported to the Ayobo Police Station as police sources also say the police was not ruling out possible double homicide after facts emerged that the deceased and her son were foaming from the mouth when they were found dead inside their home. Another theory says it may have been a case of food poisoning. The family source also informed INDEPENDENT that the remains of the deceased mother and child have not been moved as the tradition in Ayobo area is that when sudden and unexplained deaths occur, the Oro is always consulted to find out the cause of death and to ward off evil spirits that may have been unleashed of the sudden mysterious death. Reports say the two corpses are currently lying in the house awaiting the Oro rituals before they are moved. INDEPENDENT was yet to find out the name of the deceased and her son as at the time of filing this report. Crime / Ahmed Hussein-suale: Ghana Journalist Shot Dead by guru03(m): 4:09pm On Jan 17, 2019 |
A Ghanaian undercover journalist has been shot dead while driving home, after a politician called for retribution against him. Unidentified men on motorbikes shot Ahmed Hussein-Suale three times in the capital Accra, local media reports say. He was a member of Tiger Eye Private Investigations and had investigated corruption in Ghana's football leagues. The undercover report on cash gifts led to a lifetime ban for the former head of Ghana's Football Association. BBC Africa Eye made a documentary about the scandal last year after gaining access to the investigation led by journalist Anas Aremayaw Anas, who runs Tiger Eye. After the BBC broadcast the football documentary, Ghanaian MP Kennedy Agyapong circulated photos of Mr Hussein-Suale and called for retribution against him. In turn, the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists called on Mr Agyapong last summer to stop threatening journalists. In a press release, Tiger Eye said they were "terribly devastated by the dastardly act", but were "unshaken" in their pursuit of "nation-wreckers". Mr Hussein-Suale was shot twice in the chest and once in the neck in the suburb of Madina at about 23:00 (23:00 GMT) on Wednesday night, reports say. His body has reportedly been taken to the Police Hospital Morgue and will be buried soon. The investigative journalist co-operated with the BBC on several stories, including an investigation into human body parts sold for ritual magic in Malawi. Violence against the press is rare in Ghana. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, only one other journalist has been killed in Ghana since 1992. The International Federation of Journalists says eight journalists were killed across all of Africa in 2018 https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-46902748 |
