Art, Graphics & Video / Ghana's Fantasy Coffins: Taking The Final Journey In Style by guru03(m): 5:15am On Nov 26, 2018
Ghanaians take great pride in making coffins that reflect the life, dreams, passions and status of the dead.

Loved ones believe the dead should get the best possible send-off, with funerals being elaborate affairs.

Journalists Fellipe Abreu and Henrique Hedler visited two Kane Kwei Carpentry Workshops, in the capital Accra and the southern city of Kumasi, to meet the carpenters making custom-made coffins.

The shops are named after Seth Kane Kwei, who some say first designed fantasy coffins in Ghana. With Ghana being one of the world's largest cocoa producers, families in rural areas collect and save their hard-earned money to bury the deceased in custom-made cocoa pods.

Coffins like this can cost up to $1,000 (£780) - a huge amount for the farmers, most of whom earn less than $3 a day.Generally, the coffin designs reflect the occupation or status of the deceased. In this case "the chilli pepper carries a symbolic meaning that goes well beyond the life of a farmer," says workshop manager Eric Adjetey, who's been in the business for 50 years.

The red colour and spiciness represents the personality of that person. "He was hot and temperamental, a person you don't want to mess around with." Coffins in the style of a Mercedes Benz are popular - this one is for a wealthy man who owned the German-made car, and his grave will be dug to fit it.

"This is one of the most commonly used coffins. It represents the person's high social status," says coffin maker Steve Ansah. Most people call the pieces of art fantasy coffins, but they are locally called Abeduu Adekai, which means "proverb boxes".

This is because there is a symbolic meaning behind each design. Aeroplanes are also among the popular designs. This one is for a child. It symbolizes his successful journey to the afterlife.

Sometimes community members chip in to help with the costs of making a coffin. In recent years, the real estate sector has boomed in Ghana. This coffin is for a landlord who was widely appreciated by his community for building and renting homes to them.

"Generally, it's the responsibility of loved ones and family members to buy the coffin for the deceased. But they also have to pay for the ceremony, including buying food and drink, and clothing for the deceased."

"The ceremony happens from Thursday to Monday. On Thursday the family gets the coffin; on Friday the body is brought from the mortuary; on Saturday the funeral takes places, while on Sunday people go to church. On Monday family members count the money that was invested and donated," Mr Adjetey says. Carpenters carve the coffin, then sand it to create a uniform surface ready to be painted. A local singer will be buried in this microphone-shaped coffin.

"We don't know the person's size so we ask the family, or even rely on photos," says Mr Ansah, the carpenter. In recent years, other carpenters have started making custom-made coffins to meet the booming local demand. The palanquin and queen is actually not a coffin, it was custom-made for an art gallery in Philadelphia in the US.

Customers in more than 20 countries have bought these coffins over the last decades.

The coffin designs have also attracted interest from woodworking students in South Korea, Russia, US and Denmark, who have come to Ghana to learn the trade.

Local carpenters often use simple handmade tools to sand the wood and carve the wood into a coffin shape.

Politics / Ganduje Bribery: Police Ban Students From Protest Against Kano Governor by guru03(m): 11:01am On Oct 17, 2018
The police in Kano have banned the Kano chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) from embarking on a rally to call for the resignation of the governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, over an alleged $5 million bribe.

Mr Ganduje appeared in a series of video, receiving money in dollars alleged to be bribe amounting to about $5million.

The money was given by persons believed to be contractors to the state government.

The first set of at least 15 clips in possession of online-based Daily Nigerian was published on Sunday afternoon by the platform.

The two minutes video was recorded in 2017 in what Daily Nigerian described as a sting operation aimed at beaming a spotlight on the governor’s alleged penchant for contract racketeering.

The governor has debunked the video as “cloned” and threatened a sweeping lawsuit against its publisher.

But PREMIUM TIMES’ graphics experts who examined the video corroborated the position of Daily Nigerian, which earlier said its internal and independent graphics analysts have authenticated the clips.

In an audio announcement sent to PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday evening, the Kano police spokesperson, Magaji Majia, said the police rejected the students’ request to conduct rally on October 29 from Zoo Road to Kano government house.

The rally, according to Mr Majia, was to ask Mr Ganduje to step aside to allow for an independent investigation to ascertain the authenticity of the video clips.

“I wish to warn the group leader, Comarade Isa Abubakar, to caution his members to desist from embarking on this rally.

“However, we advise anyone who has a complaint or suggestion on this matter to approach the committee set up by the state House of Assembly in order to expand investigation.

“But whoever caught violating this directives would face the wrath of law,” Mr Majia said.

PREMIUM TIMES earlier reported how the Kano State House of Assembly on Monday set up a seven-member committee to probe the videos. The committee was given one month to perform its task. It is not clear if the assembly, made up largely of the governor’s loyalists, would do a thorough job.

In a related development, a civil society organisation, Youth Coalition Movement, has called on the Kano State House of Assembly to immediately suspend Mr Ganduje, pending the outcome of the investigative committee constituted by the house.

A statement signed by group’s chairman, Aminu Sparrow, and sent to PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday evening said the suspension became necessary to allow proper investigation.

He appealed to the state assembly not to hesitate in taking drastic action on anyone found guilty of such act no matter the position he occupies so as to serve as deterrent to others.

Mr Sparrow advised the assembly to reduce the timeframe given to the committee to two weeks for speedy investigation.

WEST NILE DISTRICT, ADJUMANI, UGANDA —
Police in Uganda's West Nile region said this week that they were holding three South Sudanese in connection with last week's brutal killing of a Ugandan preacher at the Pagirinya refugee settlement in Adjumani district.

Superintendent Josephine Angucia, a spokeswoman for the West Nile regional police, said Pastor Bunia Margaret of the Victory Church, which operates in Uganda's Adjumani and Moyo districts, was killed in broad daylight by a mob at the Pagirinya II trading center after a group of Christian evangelical leaders had accused her of being a witch.

"This deceased pastor, Margaret, went to preach the word of God at the refugee camps of Adjumani district. She got a big congregation. According to witnesses, this did not go well with other pastors at the refugee camps. Out of jealousness, they mobilized and came up with a memorandum labeling Bunia Margaret to be a witch," Angucia told VOA's South Sudan in Focus.

South Sudanese refugee leaders at the settlement said Margaret arrived in May and established her church in Pagirinya II's Block E.

John Wani, who lives in Pagirinya Block E, said Margaret attracted mostly women and children. He said the pastor claimed she had the power to heal any disease. This, he said, encouraged some to abandon their homes and camp at the church, often for several days. As a result, Wani said, some women abandoned their responsibilities at home.

Wani also said strange things also happened to members of Margaret's Victory Church.
"Many children also left the school because of that. Some girls could go there to pray all night, and they never respected their parents. That pastor, she also told a young boy who was suffering from hepatitis that he should not take the medicine. Pastor said God would cure him," Wani told South Sudan in Focus.

Strong denials

Margaret's followers, including South Sudanese refugee Grace Kuku, strongly denied the allegations, saying she'd healed many people with diseases in the camp. They also argued that freedom of worship is a fundamental right under Ugandan law, and said that if parents were not happy with the pastor's teachings and activities, they should have prevented their children from attending her church.

"I have not witnessed these things. What I know is that there was a girl brought from Agojo who was having this mental illness. Pastor started to fast and pray for her, something like five days. Like that, the girl was OK," Kuku said.

But religious and community leaders in the camp continued to call for Margaret's expulsion. Officials said they were still reviewing the demand when a youth mob stoned Margaret, who died August 7. Angucia said the three South Sudanese suspects were pastors and that police believe the suspects encouraged the youths to kill Margaret.

"Inquiries still continue, and police deployments are yet continuing there as I speak. The situation has remained calm as we monitor and look for the other suspects who are still at large," Angucia told VOA.

Angucia warned refugees there would be serious repercussions for people who acted as judge and jury.

"So, as police, we highly condemn this act of mob justice, where individuals take [the] law into their hands and act on people based on rumors, which are not properly investigated. So, whoever participated in this should know that at the rightful time, he or she will be arrested and prosecuted before the law, because this is not accepted by the law of Uganda," said Angucia.

The police superintendent said the three suspects appeared in court last Friday and were charged with murder. If found guilty, they could face the death penalty.
