Most German nouns do not change their endings for the various cases. However, the articles or adjectives preceding the nouns do change their forms to reflect the case. Thus, it is often necessary to look to the article and/or adjective in order to be able to identify the case of a noun.
We have 2 types of articles
1)Definite articles - der, die, das
2) Indefinite article - ein, ein, eine
1. The definite article (der, das, die) is used to refer to a particular or specific person, place, or thing.
Der Arzt hat montags Sprechstunde. - The doctor has office hours on Mondays.
Here we are speaking of a particular doctor.
2. The indefinite article (ein, ein, eine) is used to refer to an unspecified person, place, or thing.
Ein Arzt hat viele Patienten. - A doctor has many patients
In this case we are not referring to a particular doctor
## As noted at the beginning of this thread, it is the definite article (der, das, die) that most clearly indicates the gender of a noun. Due to the changes in the endings of the definite article, the definite article is also most useful in identifying the case of a noun.
The group of words that take the same grammatical endings as the definite article are referred to as “der” words.
•Dieser - This
•Jener - That
•Jeder - Each, every
•Mancher - Many
•Solcher - Such
•Welcher - Which
Similarly, the group of words that take the same grammatical endings as the indefinite article (ein, ein, eine) are referred to as “ein” words.
•Mein - my
•Dein - your(familiar singular)
•Sein - his or its
•ihr - her or their
•Ihr - your(plural)
Note that the first ihr starts with lower case letter i while the second one start with upper case letter i
unser - our
euer - your(familiar plural)
These “ein” words are also referred to as possessive adjectives, since their function is to describe the nouns they modify by indicating possession or ownership
Note : The possessive adjective euer usually contracts by dropping the last (and unstressed) e of the stem when an adjective ending is added.
eu(e)re Kinder - eure Kinder eu(e)re Hunde - eure Hunde
However, the possessive adjective unser usually does not contract but rather retains its unstressed e, even when it is followed by an adjective ending, particularly in written German
uns(e)re Kinder - unsere Kinder uns(e)re Hunde - unsere Hunde |

Cases of NounsGerman has four cases. These cases signal how nouns (and pronouns, too) are used within a sentence, clause, or phrase. Nouns (words such as ‘man’, ‘house’, ‘dog’) play different roles in a sentence or clause. For example, a noun can be the agent of what is happening (‘Dog bites man’) or it can be in the position where the action of the verb happens to it (‘Dog bites man’). In German, these different roles are signalled by the case. The cases are the following. •Nominative•Accusative•Dative•GenitiveHow does this compare to English? You know that a noun is a subject when it comes before the verb. If it is an object, it comes after the verb. But normally the case isn’t evident, except when you use pronouns: ‘he’/‘she’/‘it’ etc.: Take this as an example; Klexycole loves Pecky - He loves her Pecky loves Klexycole - She loves him |

Gerardmajella: The basic funds I need as I learnt is NOK 116 369 I responded to the comment before yours stating that there are little jobs one can get without a full knowledge of Norwegian...
Though I plan to start learning Norwegian before leaving
I'm with the comments about Norway, I'm beginning to get worried....the emphasis on funds and expenses and the high cost of living If you ask me, i would advice you choose Germany. Norway and Germany are great countries but I would definitely pick Germany anytime anyday Reason : 1) Easier to make friends, German are a little more sociable (not all of them) than Norwegians.Talking from my own perspective. I have met alot online and i can tell you germans are more sociable than Norwegians 2) You have access to more jobs and opportunities in Germany, the economic powerhouse of Europe You have access to large market. Bigger country, bigger opportunities 3) Germany is my dream country, hence my biased opinion Having said that, Germany is a good country to study science/math/engineering courses but since your course is under humanities, i would suggest you choose Norway. Just be prepared for their depressing dark winter. Well, as a Nigerian that won't be a problem because the problems we face here is more than that. Besten wünsche #Shalom |

Gerardmajella: Good afternoon. I really appreciate your input
Concerning the abroad plan (choice between Norway and Germany).. I'm going there primarily for study (M.Sc Marketing). Not necessarily relocation Mind you....all universities there (Norway) are state-owned thus, tuition free for both EU/EEA and International students... irrespective of your nationality.
In Norway, everyone is required to have at least NOK 116 369 which when converted to NGN is #4.8m approximately #5m I calculated the cost for Germany too...it's About #4m
Thats for the block account oo...it can take care of accommodation, feeding and transportation for a while
I don't know how long though Which means....with this fund, I'll be able to survive as a student in Norway since all schools are tuition free
But of course, I'll have to look out for menial jobs... To add to what I have I learnt there are some jobs you can take that doesn't require you to understand Norwegian fully (restaurant, hotel, etc).
Jobs that require a good knowledge of Norwegian are corporate jobs
Though I plan to start learning the language (the basics atleast) for now... referring to Norwegian
So....the cost is almost same (Norway and Germany) as per block account. I'm not sure if all schools in Germany are tuition-free. I know some are.
But the information is not really clear
I'm really not comfortable with Germany.... because I don't have sufficient information (that's why I'm asking) I learnt one has to go through Goethe Institute first...but it's not same for Norwegian Wrong. You don't need to go to Goethe institute before you can apply. Although there are some courses like medicine, aerospace engineering and law just to mention a few that requires a good knowledge of German before you can apply. As for insufficient information, help yourself here https://www.nairaland.com/4566903/general-german-student-visa-enquiries#Shalom |

Schemer360: To incoming president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar
Sir,
I'm happy to write you this open letter because I'm pretty certain that you won our "futuristic" presidential election due to the overwhelming popularity you have from numerous Nigerians who want a better life, who want to be seen as hardworking and not lazy as seen by one useless, lifeless, senseless, tribalistic, fascist president that is sitting on the throne. Sir, to be honest with you, a large percentage of us support you not because you are the best or most qualified for the job but because we don't want to see the current "Pharaoh" again and we know you are the one that can match him "arsenally" we are not supporting you because we think you are the messiah, no. We are not daft not to know that you are a "thief" as said by APC cum opposition but we need a "Robinhood", that can revive the economy, improve our lives by lifting us through many life improvement programmes, provide good and adequate security and unite the nation. We didnt vote you in to give us excuses of how "President Buhari" and his cronies mismanaged the country in their four year spell, we knew that and that is the reason we changed the baton. Sir, the greatest advantage you have is to convert their woeful four year mistakes to your advantage without waiting for eternity to appoint your ministers, been a typical Nigerian this writer is, I don't need a soothsayer to tell me that the likes of Saraki, Kwankwaso, Fayose, Wike, Dakwambo, Tambuwal, Taminu Turaki will be a key influencers and decision makers in your government but don't allow them to ride you the way the lifeless one made himself available to the likes of Mamman Daura, Abba Kyari etc, control your government, be firm, be "Atikulate", be unassuming in vital issues, unite the nation, improve the economy, put in your best in insfrastructure, let education voice be heard, appoint competent hands to overhead parastatals, seek for more knowledge to better the lives of average Nigerians, don't be tribalistic and above all sir..."steal little".
Goodspeed to Alhaji Atiku Adekunle Azubuike Abubakar.
Yours,
Schemer If you support Buhari, you are right and If you support Atiku, you are equally right! I move round the town to sample people's opinion on Buhari & Atiku APC supporters believe that Buhari will continue to fight corruption created by the PDPs in the last 16 years, while PDP supporters believe that Hunger/poverty will rise to the next level and Nigerian economy will go worse if we reelect PMB. My point is this, we must not all see things from the same angle. Other peoples opinion must not always be the same with yours. Let's not allow politics to create enemity between us, remember that Feb 23rd and March 9 will come and go but there is more to your life than that. Moreover, one of these people will concede defeat, shake and congratulate the Winner and move on with his life. #United we stand #God bless Nigeria #Shalom |

Predstan: The Law there in Rwanda is really a big thing that Nigeria should adopt. You Must not litter the street and main road. If you do, you are going directly to Prison without interrogation. Maybe after one week in Prison, you might then be considered for interrogation or court sitting. You must also not date an under 18 babe no matter how big she is, if you are caught, you are going directly to prison. Underage(18) cannot also lodge by themselves except with parent. If they are caught, The manager of that hotel is going to Prison without Interrogation. This made them fear the law and obey it without forgetting. Let me also talk about their transportation system apart from Buses. They have Bikes(Okada) and must use Helment anytime you are riding. Amazingly, they use Bicycle also to transport people... Thats very funny, I rode on it also just to get the feelings(pictures attached). Its really smooth being the passenger. Rwanda is really a progressive country. Unguided freedom is one of our problems here. How i wish Nigerians could learn to obey the laws |
