Who was incompetent? Nigerians are quite ok with defending what is wrong. I bet you one or two persons could fortell that that building will collapse just by looking at it. It maybe expensive, but it's worth the cost at the long run especially in Nigeria, considering the cost of fuel now. I use and inverter at home and with the little light plan bring, it gets charged and am happy at the long run I was not happy with the cost too at the long run, but now it worth the cost, unless the light spoilt or phone didn't bring light, I hardly on my gen, I can remember a gen that works everyday before now works maybe once or two like in four months.

my friend though it might actually look expensive but when compared to the amount of fuel used up by generators and the money spent in its maintenance in a year then you will know that it is really worth worth it.
