Rogaine is simply a brand name for the generic drug 5% Minoxidil. It is quite expensive (for no specific reason). There are however other alternatives manufactured these days at half the price of Rogaine and just as effective, containing the same 5% Minoxidil such as Kirkland.
Minoxidil is a drug initially manufactured as an antihypertensive medication. It was subsequently discovered to cause lots of hairgrowth on people taking it and so its use in treating baldness was established. It was then manufactured for topical use on bald spots (that is on the skin).
