Politics / Re: Edo People Deserve Obaseki Again by handie(m): 9:31pm On Jul 02, 2020
thankless:
Chief Nathaniel Momoh is a man who has earned my unconditional respect for a number of reasons, chief of which is that, he says what he means, and means what he says. If he gives you his word, you can go to sleep. And there are few men today in the Nigerian political space that we can say the same about.

The role he played during the launching, in 2019, of my book “Ososo; Our Place, Our People and Our Patrimony”, a book about the scenic town of streams and rocks caught in between the undulating Somorika hills in northern Edo State, registered this fact in my head.
Long before Adams Oshiomole’s suspension, before Godwin Obaseki’s disqualification from participating in the APC gubernatorial primary, and his subsequent defection to the PDP, before all the drama began to play out in the APC, before our very eyes, I had had this soft spot for the governor, for the singular reason that he loves Edo State and her people, a thing we can all verify from the actions he has taken since he took office.
In the same vein, I started having reservation for Adams Oshiomole since the day he took on APC’s major trait, long after he discarded his NLC spirit of activism, and developed a penchant for saying one thing in the morning and another at night. And keen observers of the man and the unraveling events in Edo State these past weeks, can attest to this.
Chief Nathaniel is like a father, and for this reason, not only do I visit often, I also try to support and answer his call anytime, any day. So when I got wind of his plan to set up a movement in support of Obaseki’s re-election bid, I made a mental note to take him up on his reasons, when next I visited. Though the governor has my undiluted support, I decided to play the devil’s advocate. And so, the first question I put to Chief Nathaniel was why he decided to form the Obaseki Mandate Forum, FCT and lend support to a man who some have argued “promised to construct the Ososo/Okpella road and failed”.
The Ososo/Okpella road was the responsibility of Adams Oshiomole who spent eight years in office. The road is barely twenty kilometers to Iyamu, Oshiomole’s home town, why did he not do it? In any case, he insisted, there is still a chance for Obaseki to fulfill his promise to the people of Ososo, that is why we must all support him.
Four years ago, in the build up to the Edo State governorship election that ushered in Governor Obaseki, Adams Oshiomole explained to the people of Edo State and Nigeria why he settled for the man.
“I know my limit”. He said, and “He knows his limit. Godwin Obaseki has worked for seven and half years for the people of Edo state, using his brain, creativity, quietly, not making noise,” he added.
Rapping on, he continued, “He sits in the office of the economic team which he built using his network of friends inside the heart of government house without demanding one naira…
A man like that who will not ask me to give him contracts, but will promise me, ‘comrade, you just do the thinking, we will create the means to actualize your thoughts’. And to his credit today, check the books of Edo state, we did not build new structures in government house with government money. That economic team office was built through Godwin’s network. Today, it remains a permanent asset of the state government.
I want us to be calling that building Godwin Obaseki building…” If you think that was all, hear Adams Oshiomole.
If you have to look at Godwin and his credentials and you look at a man whose only work, by his CV, was a student and rusticated for two years, he read law but he is not a barrister. That is his foundation. I never gave him government job. Lucky Igbinedion’s mother was reported to have slapped Ize-Iyamu for misleading her son. He tried it with me, but we kept him away. Nothing near government circle. No access to public funds.
Look at the road to his house, in our books, was dual carriage way. They took the money, constructed the road to his house and stopped. Although we have liquidated the godfathers politically, the entire political family will be liquidated.” He concluded.
At different forums, to different audiences, on radio, television, newspapers, at campaign rallies, just name it, our man Adams Oshiomole went on telling the entire world who the man Obaseki is, how impeccable his educational qualifications were, how he, as head of his economic team, contributed to his success as governor and even raised his hand up to heaven at a campaign rally on one occasion, and swore in the name of God, that he was bequeathing to the people of Edo a man after God’s heart, and that he had destroyed “godfatherism” in Edo State, that he would allow Obaseki be his own man with no interference. He didn’t stop there, he went on to tell us how much of a thief the current flagbearer of the APC was and how he could not even trust him with a board appointment, pray people, what has changed in four years?
How many of the people who, today, oppose Governor Obaseki’s re-election have accused him of incompetence? Instead, we hear words like, “he’s disloyal to his godfather” in 21st century Nigerian politics, even though these same people know what it means to pander to the will of godfathers in Nigeria! Lagos is not far from Edo State, former governor Ambode is still alive and we are not blind to the recent history of that state.
It is on record that when Governor Obaseki took office, he told the party chieftains and foot soldiers of Oshiomhole that he remained a technocrat who believed that the allocation to the state and its internally-generated revenue were meant for the development of the state, and not for sharing among politicians. Do we still need to look far to see the real reason for the rift between the two men?
For the first time in our history, in Governor Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki, we have a man who loves and cares for his people, who rules from among the people, who listens, who decided the resources of the state are meant strictly for the betterment of the lives of the people.

From welfare and security, through education and healthcare, to infrastructure and industrialization, we have seen a man who is fulfilling campaign promises and bringing hope to the people. A man who is not only committed to fixing roads, rebuilding schools, facilitating the expansion of existing businesses and ensuring a vibrant, boisterous state that all residents will be proud of, but a man who has started a process that will see the State take its rightful place. Are we to talk about Ossiomo Power Plant, Edo Best that is offering employment to our youths, Edo Festival, or the Ogbemudia Stadium that can conveniently host world Olympics games today? The list is endless.

Thousands of Edo youths trapped in the Mediterranean in search of greener pastures abroad are back home and many are engaged, those who were trafficked as sex workers are home and ones again, there is hope for our people, our children, despite Covid 19, are doing well and so on.

Abuja has a large collection of intelligent, hardworking and vibrant Edo indigenes, among them, a group of like-minded friends came together and decided that Edo State must takes it pride of places among other States. When they realized that the very man who boasted of having crashed godfatherism in Edo State, had turned around to try to establish his own dynasty, they decided all such moves must be resisted. That was how the Obaseki Mandate Forum, Abuja, OMF FCT was born. OMF exists to support good governance in Edo State, this is why it has thrown its entire weight behind Obaseki’s re-election bid.

Across the entire Edo State, among ordinary people, the mission is clear, come September 19, 2020, we shall together speak with one voice, through our votes, loud and clear, that Edo People Deserve Obaseki Again.
I realize we both have our freedom to associate with whosoever we want. But, selling our home town for crumbs? That should be frowned upon. Comrade sir, what has Obaseki done for Ososo since he assumed power in 2016? Why should Ososo people vote for Obaseki? In the build up to the 2019 General election, a document was bandied about showing that provisions to the tune of 1.4 billion Naira has been made in the 2p19 budget for the Ososo Okpella road. Till this date, nothing has been done to that effect. Moreover, I heard from a reliable source that The house of Assembly member Hon. Emmanuel Agbaje dug into his personal pocket and released some funds for the survey work on this project all in a bid to fast track it. Till today, the only work carried out on the road is the survey. While Chief Nathaniel Momoh is someone I respect, I'd expect him to ask governor Godwin Obaseki about what he has done for Ososo land and while Ososo people should vote for him for a second term. Why should we jettison an Oshiomole who we know and who ensured the time spent on a journey from Ososo to Igarra is halved, who constructed and renovated several blocks of classrooms in Ososo and also appointed an Ososo daughter as a member of his cabinet to support an Obaseki who to d best of my knowledge has done next to nothing not just for Ososo, not just for Akoko Edo but the majority of Afenmai land

You noted civil service reforms, repositioning of the education sectors aswell as prompt salaries and pensions and some more, but you see failed to say how he failed woefully...

Is the fight against oshomole in your favour or against it as an "edolite" as the case was majorly on imposition of appointments?
Why do u think Oshiomole's fight with Obaseki is about appointments and sharing of resources? There was a infrastructural masterplan Oshiomole had in place. Obaseki was supposed to continue from where he stopped. In four years of Obaseki's administration, the Edo storm water project is still at d stage Oshiomole left it. D Central hospital has become one of his tools for his political war. Even in road construction, he has failed. The only road he can he can proudly lay claim to in Edo state is TV road. If you ever were in Benin and Edo in general pre and post d Oshiomole's years, you'd understand my points. Infrastructurally, Obaseki has failed. His job creation moves are only seen on paper. Not trying to defend Oshiomole who's too loquacious and whose style of leadership leaves much to be desired. Even if the disagreement arose from appointments, didn't Obaseki know what he was getting himself into? Would you as an individual be happy if d Oshiomole treatment was meted out to you? Lemme tell you one fact ::Obaseki was a non entity in Edo politics prior to 2016 and all through the campaigns, Oshiomole did majority of the talking. People voted for Obaseki because Oshiomole said he's his son and he trusts him.

Direct Primary is what is being used in advanced democracy like US.

If you are bold enough and refused to inaugurate elected 14 members of the the State House of Assembly. You should be bold enough to face the members of your party for Primary.

At least , it is not only you contesting.
Not only that, Obaseki was grandstanding and refused all efforts made at brokering peace. He shunned all efforts made to reconcile and further went on to burn more bridges. His infamous Edo is not Lagos diatribe is still fresh in our memories. Not forgetting his public appearance in a press conference where he shamefacedly asked for Oshiomole's resignation. What about proxy wars embarked on against Odubu(a citizen of his state who got a federal appointment) on account of being in different factions? His use of state power against Tony Kabaka and others nko? That guy overdo abeg

Obaseki, Akeredolu to brace for shadow polls
•APC governors praise Sanwo-Olu on COVID-19

THERE may be no going back on transparent and democratic primaries for the choice of governorship candidates by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo and Ondo states, it was learnt yesterday.

At a meeting with nine APC governors, National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu said democratic primary as a core element of internal democracy should not be jettisoned.

A source at the meeting held at the State House, Marina, Lagos, said Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos, emphasised the importance of primary to democracy, admonishing party leaders to safeguard it in the preparation for the choice of standard bearers.

The Progressives Governors’s Forum, led by Kebbi State Governor Atiku Bagudu, unfolded plans last week to mount pressure on President Muhammadu Buhari to support their push for right of first refusal to two of their colleagues, Ondo State Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) and Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, for the governorship.

The polls will hold in Edo in September and Ondo in October. No fewer than 10 chieftains are competing for the ticket in Ondo APC with Akeredolu, who is seeking a second term.

In Edo, other contenders have stepped down for Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who is challenging Obaseki at the shadow poll. The Edo governor is also seeking re-election.

Last week, National Working Committee (NWC) announced that direct primary will be adopted for the Edo APC shadow poll.

At yesterday’s two-hour parley, the following nine governors were in attendance.

Bagudu, Obaseki, Akeredolu, Simon Lalong (Plateau), Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano), Mai Buni(Yobe), Adegboyega Oyetola(Osun), Abubakar Bello(Niger) and Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), who was the host.

According to the source, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma could not make it due to undisclosed reasons.

The governors, who appeared to be in one accord, wanted the party to be fair to their two colleagues, who they said, should not be muscled out.Specifically, the governors wanted Tinubu to prevail on the party leadership to give Obaseki the right of first refusal, the source said.

However, Tinubu went to the meeting with the position that it is better, more democratic, constitutionally right and politically defensible that all aspirants should go for primaries to test their popularity, adding that, through that free and fair selection process, the ruling party will successfully build a strong democratic culture.

A highlight of the meeting was the peer review by the Progressive Governors with Sanwo-Olu on the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The governors, who said they were impressed by the steps taken by Lagos State, showered praises on Incident Commander, Sanwo-Olu.

They also said what they learnt from the Lagos experience would influence their strategies to combat the dreaded pestilence in their respective states.

Tinubu, the source said, urged the governors to support the guidelines released by the NWC, maintaining that they are in the interest of the party.

Although some of the governors revisited the acrimony and controversy generated by the contrasting perspectives on the Comrade Adams Oshiomhole leadership, which they acknowledged as a battle within battles, Tinubu pointed out that it was normal in political life.

Besides, according to the source, the party stalwart counselled that since the conflict had been resolved, stakeholders should put the past behind them and forge ahead in harmony.

The source said Asiwaju Tinubu reiterated his belief in fairness to the incumbent governors and other interested governorship aspirants in the two states.

The source added: “Asiwaju also said he believed in the direct primary. His argument was that the direct primary will boost the confidence of the flag bearer as he prepares for the main governorship election.”

“Asiwaju Tinubu may have intervened in this sensitive nomination matter with a benefit of hindsight because as he rightly pointed out, direct primary produced Oyetola as Osun APC candidate and Babajide Sanwo-Olu as flag bearer in Lagos State.

“Besides, I think Asiwaju Tinubu is of the opinion that where there are more than one contender, primary should be adopted to foster equity, fairness and justice.”

After the meeting, Sanwo-Olu took the governors to see the photo exhibition of his activities in the last one year.

Why on earth would a 'popular governor' be afraid of direct primaries? With the crisis in Edo APC, d only mode of election that can prevent a repeat of the Zamfara incident is a direct primary election. Why on earth is Obaseki afraid? He has d same access Ize-Iyamu and every other aspirant has to d party faithfuls. What is he jittery about? As an Edo man, truth be say Obaseki too Bleep up. Nobody knew him in Edo political circles prior to 2016. Oshiomole brought him in and practically ran his campaign for him. While I'm against godfatherism, there's what we call political patronage and Obaseki could have done that while still being his own man. But nah, he'd rather engage in an open fight with his predecessor and every party man. Imagine going as far as lobbying to have the NDDC appointment of the ex deputy governor revoked cause he is not from his camp. Would any of the so called progressive governors be happy if the Oshiomole treatment is meted to them by their successors who they almost singlehandedly installed? As for development, forget what u read online. I'm an Edo man and I can tell you for a fact that Obaseki hasn't done zilch apart from some civil service reforms and d repositioning of the primary and post primary education sectors. Infrastructurally, Obaseki is a non performer. How can anyone even be agitating for an indirect primary which is a cesspool of corruption as d few delegates selected can be easily influenced with state funds.

Seriously, the privatisation of the power sector has failed in all it's entirety. While the immediate past president can and should be blamed for his handling of the process (He virtually handed over a sector as critical as electricity to friends and cronies without considering their capacity to deliver), it goes further than that. Honestly, the privatisation should be reversed, a new and comprehensive plan that'd involve a total deregulation of the sector with both generation and distribution in the hands of competent private entities who would be selected by a transparent and credible process with the government only playing a regulatory role through the BEDC. Alas, I know the above won't happen. D senate are most probably bringing this up cause they want a settlement from the Discos. Nigeria's ruling elites cannot be this selfless..... Politics / Re: Obaseki: We Have Spent Over ₦1 Billion In COVID-19 Fight by handie(m): 6:56am On Apr 20, 2020
Lol. This man na scam. 1 billion? On what exactly? I've always known Obaseki to be a scam. He's just validating that assertion of mine. Even Relief materials were politicised and na only people wey know people get something. My dad is a party leader in his ward and this was why he got 10kg of rice, beans and 1 carton of indomie(that smallest size o). It was really funny cause people who really need this stuff were out there. Well, we decided to distribute them to those who really needed them and so, we ended up measuring 3 cups of rice, beans and 1 indomie and sharing to those we felt are really in need of such. It's little but at least we did something. Biko Bros Obas, where and how u take use d 1 billion?
