History (and sometimes, unfortunately, current events) shows us just how easily national borders can change, but we still like to think that they are permanent fixtures. These photos of different national borders around the world show you how both friendly and hostile nations like to fence off their turf. Borders will often say much about countries’ relationships. The borders between friendly nations, especially those in the European Union’s Schengen zone, can seem almost non- existent, marked by no more than a line or a road sign. Other borders are delineated by natural markers like rivers, or by man-made markers, like guard posts and demilitarized zones. Politics › Boko Haram: Nigerian Military Moves Command Centre To Maiduguri by handie(op): 10:24pm On Jun 08, 2015 |
Following President Muhammadu Buhari’s order that the military command centre be relocated to Maiduguri in Borno State, the Nigerian military has established a Command and Control Centre, MCCC, in the state. The centre’s operation, themed Operation Zaman Lafiya, is created for the fight against Boko Haram that has ravaged the North East since 2009. This has led to the killing of many and displacement of others by the insurgents. Sani Usman, Nigerian Army spokesperson, said the establishment of the command is in accordance with Mr. Buhari’s pronouncement and the directive from the Chief of Army Staff, Kenneth Minimah. Mr. Buhari had during his inauguration ceremony at the Eagle Square in Abuja on May 29 said that the military command centre be relocated to Maiduguri in Borno State – the center stage of Boko Haram terrorists’ activities. He said the arrangement will remain that till Boko Haram is defeated. Mr. Usman said an advance team led by a major general has commenced work in Maiduguri. “The team, which is led by a two-star General, has already commenced work in earnest and it is comprised of elements of the Office of the Chief of Army Staff, all the relevant Army Headquarters Departments and other combat support components,”Mr. Usman, a colonel, said. The centre, Mr. Usman said, will serve as a forward command base for the Chief of Army Staff and other Service Chiefs. He said the MCCC is an elaboration of an “already existing” army headquarters command and control arrangement. “From now on, the fight against terrorism and insurgency would be monitored, coordinated and controlled from this centre,” he said. He added that the establishment of the MCCC would not create another command structure but would serve as a motivation to the Operation Zaman Lafiya; all aimed at bringing an end to insurgency. Mr. Usman also said an alternate command centre is also being established in Yola. Politics › How Amaechi Failed To Settle Me With Parting Gifts After Our Tenure—tele Ikuru by handie(op): 10:15pm On Jun 08, 2015 |
The immediate past deputy governor of Rivers State, Tele Ikuru, has accused his former boss and state governor, Rotimi Amaechi, of maltreating him despite his contributions to the government. Mr. Ikuru, who quit the ruling All Progressives Congress in Rivers State at the twilight of the administration, said Mr. Amaechi denied him parting gifts and money when the government finally came to a close in May. He said this happened despite his contributions to the state, part of which was returning state funds and saving an estimated N100 billion for the state. Speaking during a Thanksgiving Service at St. Simons Anglican Church, Ikuru-Town in Andoni Local Government Area, Sunday, Mr. Ikuru said the thanksgiving service was to thank God for his grace and faithfulness to him, his family, and friends during the eight years of service to the state. “I served this government for seven years and seven months under Amaechi, because I was with Omehia for 5 months,” Mr. Ikuru said. “At the end of the seven years and seven months Amaechi did not think that I deserved any parting gift in spite of the fact that in the course of this administration, by reason of the office I occupied, I returned several monies to him valued over two billion Naira cash at different times during one work or the other.” In March, Mr. Ikuru stunned Mr. Amaechi and the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State when he defected to the Peoples’ Democratic Party six days to the general elections. Announcing his defection at the time, Mr. Ikuru had described the APC in the state as a party of rebels, insurgents, and anarchists clothed in robes of pretence and deceit. “Ever since, as the true nature and motives of APC are unveiled, I have continued to twist and turn in extreme mental and emotional agony,” he had said. “The more I struggle to belong, the more the Rivers man in me rejects the APC.” On Sunday, Mr. Ikuru stated that his contribution to Mr. Amaechi’s administration saved Rivers State “not less than a hundred billion Naira” over the period. “At the end of the seven years and seven months, my boss left me hard and dry, nothing and no penny to go home with,” he added. Mr. Ikuru gave glory to God for all that happened, saying that he had never expected reward from man his entire life, rather he always looked up to God and that with the thanksgiving, he was sure that God will remember him. In his address, Nyesom Wike, the Rivers State Governor, described Mr. Ikuru as a wonderful servant to the state, pointing out that he finished very strong in view of his outstanding legacies. Mr. Wike, who was represented by Kenneth Kobani, the Secretary to the State Government, noted that Mr. Ikuru’s track record singled him out to head the transition committee that ushered in the present government. “His Excellency has asked me to join you in this thanksgiving service, and to say our brother Tele Ikuru had been a wonderful servant to Rivers State,” Mr. Kobani said. “He served the state meritoriously and finished very strong. That is why at the time we needed someone to midwife the transition government, we did not have to look anywhere else, but to look at Tele Ikuru to lead us.” Also speaking, the National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Uche Secondus, lauded Mr. Ikuru for his humble and peaceful disposition which he noted stemmed from his upbringing from a humble family. Earlier in his sermon, the Curate of the church, Reverend Silas Ikut, who spoke on the topic “Standing on the Existing Protocol”, urged everyone to follow God’s protocol which he noted had been established to bring about peace and good governance in the state. Crime › Man Docked For Coke ‘theft by handie(op): 12:27am On Jun 08, 2015 |
A 22-year-old unemployed, Stanley Amoebi, has been charged before a Badagry Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos State for allegedly stealing a pack of coke valued at N1,000. The accused is facing a charge of stealing. Prosecuting Inspector Innocent Uko told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 1 at about 6.00 p.m. at Ajara Shopping Complex in Badagry. Uko noted that the accused stole a pack of coke from the complainant, Mrs Senami Hungbo, at her shop. “He went to the woman’s shop to buy a pack of coke, but while the woman was looking for change for him, he disappeared with another pack. The woman pursued him and he was apprehended.’’ Uko noted that the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State. Counsel to the accused, Mr Yemi Fowler, pleaded with the court to grant him bail on liberal terms. Magistrate Abiodun Etti, granted the accused N20,000 bail. He adjourned the case till July 3.[/q] Source: thenationonlineng.net/new/man-docked-for-coke-theft/[quote] Not saying what he did is right but why have two different set of laws for same citizens? Or is this a case of all animals being equal but some being more equal than others? A public official will loot billions and will go for a plea bargain where he returns a small fraction of what he steals and even those who are jailed are given state welcome and pardon. But a poor man who steals something of N1000 will be made to pay a 20,000 bail fee. We're all supposed to be equal before the law. |

Absolutely brilliant Analysis. In the power play that's currently going on, there're too main actors. Buhari and Tinubu. Buhari can't afford to have a Tinubu boy in HOR speakership and if peradventure it happens, it'll make Tinubu have a sort of leverage in the event of a thaw in relationship between him and Tinubu..... Saraki and Dogara in the leadership positions actually will make APC more stronger as the overbearing Tinubu's influence will be whittled down. Make Barcanista dey do some Yama yama logic for dia |

Politics › Re: Open Campaign For The Adoption Of Sen Saraki And Hon Dogara As PDP Candidates by handie(m): 1:15pm On Jun 07, 2015 |
[s] barcanista: This thread is to officially call on noble PDP fans, Supporters, admirers and all patriotic citizens to endorse the candidacy of Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki(APC Kwara) and Honorable Yakubu Dogara (APC, Bauchi) for the positions of Senate President and House Speaker respectively.
Why Senator Saraki and Honorable Dogara: The emergence of Senator Saraki will mean a major crack in the APC structure and the quest for dominance of this political era. Saraki knowing fully well that he wasn't the APC "nominee" will be more liberal and less partisan because he knows that he needs the PDP Senators to survive. The PDP cannot afford not to reinvent their influence and prepare for 2019.
Honorable Yakubu Dogara, a Christian from Bauchi state has pledged to adopt Hon Leo Ogar (PDP, Delta state) as the Deputy Senate President. He has also pledged that Chairmanship of House Committees will be in 50:50 sharing formular between the PDP and APC. Like Saraki, he isn't the nominee of the APC. His emergence will nullify the APC planned expansion and will whittle their proposed structure. The PDP can't afford to lose this opportunity to assert their influence in the 8th Assembly.
Can We Succeed? Of the 60 APC Senators, a group of 35 under the Umbrella of "Like Minds" consisting of Senators from the three geo-political zones in the North (NC, NW and North East) have endorsed Senator Saraki. PDP has 49 members of the Senate, 18 from South South, 15 SE, Ekiti 3, Ondo 1, Ogun 1, Taraba 3, and one each for Yobe, Nasarawa and Benue states. A bloc vote of at least the Senators from SS and SE plus the 35 already from the APC Saraki group is more than enough to return Saraki elected. Considering the game of politics, all 49 PDP Senators should not fail to vote for Senator Bukola Saraki on Tuesday.
For the House Speakership, of 214 APC Members, 154 endorsed Gbajabiamila. The 125 PDP Reps (SS 52, SE 38, NC 8, SW 20 and 8 from NE) should endeavour not to miss this opportunity to have a say in the House, for the benefit of themselves and the Party. South South and South East PDP contingents must not disappoint Hon Leo Ogar. They all should mobilise and participate in the election. The Hon Dogara group already has 55-61 APC Reps in their ranks. With the block 125 votes from PDP in addition to the 55-61 pro Dogara APC, the "PDP" will coast to victory and be the defacto leader of the NASS.
We cannot afford to lose this golden opportunity to control the two chambers of the National Assembly. We lost the Presidency, we can't afford to lose the Senate and the House.
I hereby use this medium to call on well meaning Nigerians and the PDP supporters to endorse this proposal.
#PDP Shall Rise Again #PDP Shall Lead Again #God Bless PDP [/s] All hail Barcanista. PHD political science, PHD policy and strategy. Associate professor political philosophy. Politics › Buhari Reopens $182m Bribery Case-tribune by handie(op): 6:23am On Jun 06, 2015 |
Barely one week after the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari, the United States government has asked him to revisit the $182 million Halliburton bribery case and diligently prosecute all those involved in the scandal.
President Buhari has, consequently, directed the appropriate security agencies to reopen investigations into the case and make appropriate recommendations, it was gathered on Friday.
Informed security sources disclosed to Saturday Tribune that the U.S. government made it clear that unless those involved were prosecuted, part of the bribe money, about $140 million, recovered and still in the US, would not be repatriated to Nigeria.
“Following this development, President Buhari has directed the investigation committee made up of representatives of all security agencies to dust off the file and complete the investigations and charge those indicted to court,” the source said.
By Friday afternoon, key security officers involved in the investigations were seen by Saturday Tribune gathering files and dusting off documents on the case.
The case was investigated four years ago by a security panel headed by retired AIG Ahmadu Ali, who at the end of the case charged a former personal aide to a former Head of State to court but the case was later struck out due to lack of diligent prosecution.
Jeffry Tesler, who was the go-between in the payment of the bribes paid to secure the contract for the final phase of the multibillion naira Nationa Liquefied Natural Gas project was sentenced to 21 months in prison and forfeited $148.964 million from his Swiss accounts to the United States government.
The American government’s report on the Halliburton bribery scandal had indicted three former Nigerian leaders, a former number two citizen, a minister, intelligence chiefs and corporate giants in the list of bribery beneficiaries.
One of the indicted corporate titans, a construction company that allegedly handled the distribution of the money later opted for plea bargaining and paid the sum of $25 million to the government.
The source added that the go-between, Jeffry Tesler had served out his prison sentence and returned to England.
The security source further disclosed to Saturday Tribune that the case file would soon be reopened “and all those who were invited during the investigation will soon appear again."
The source source said, “My brother, this is a serious case now because the government of the day is very eager to prosecute anybody indicted in it so as to serve as a deterrent to others.” www.tribuneonlineng.com/content/buhari-reopens-182m-bribery-case |
