Toseman, You've started well. I once had interest in this field, especially the McKinsey path. First, there's a reason why they are paid that much (your ballpark figures are right). . . the process is fiercely competitive. Abroad, the application process no be here, but a little bit friendly here in their Nigerian office. You need to be truly exceptional, be top amongst your peers, which would get you a chance to write their PST - a test you can't write without intense prep on accuracy and speed. Thereafter, you go through series of interviews - behavioural and case interviews. Behavioural interviews draw on your ability to share past experiences, and how you can bring such expertise to bear. Case interviews is where the work is at. They give you a client scenario, and ask what would be your advice; which is the kind of work you'll be dealing with as a Consultant. In all, you need good resources and intense practice all through. Above all, God's mercy is paramount. Some factors are simply beyond our control; some call it luck or goodwill. |

An MSc in Germany? GRE? Have you checked the app requirements? Do you mind dropping one of your likely schools you want to get into? |

fizzile: Heloo guys, please I need your advice. Please am reall worried. I registered for paper based GRE at the centre at Aba. As stated by ETS, I printed the form, then filled it then went to the centre and submitted to the man incharge. His name is uncle lewis, the centre is a private school owned by an African American. So I submitted, made the payment and then travelled back to Calabar where am based. The next day i called the man and he said he has posted the form to the Princeton address on the form. I called ETS and they said it takes 4weeks to process the registration. Uptil now I have not gotten any mail regarding my registration. Please has anyone encountered such before? And secondly how long does it take for a document to be posted to US? Is there any possibility that the form has reached the office but still being processed? You only need to be worried if you've waited for more than 4 weeks, and yet no show. You won't see a mail until after processing, so give it the standard time. If the man has sent it to the address, be rest assured. |

yuddy2: Hello house, sorry I haven't been able to recount my exam day experience. Have been abit busy. Well here goes.
You can only do as well in the GRE as u do in the practice question. It's really no flunk. If u score 280 in powerprep then you could most likely score 280 in the real thing.
I couldn't sleep through the night preceding the GRE day, I kept thinking how the cookie would crumble, if I flunk the GRE. I also decided not to study further so as to keep things simple. Exam day I got to my centre early, fine gals everywhere, felt like all the fine gals in abj are all moving to the US. We Gilles out the necessary forms, and waived our rights to ***. I was still be registered in the hall when I heard keyboard typing away, and shunks meaning these people that got registered before already hitting their essays, I was shocked because I was hoping we did all start same time.
Well, I settled down after the initial scare, did my essays in good time, then drove into the verbal session, hmmmm guys Wetin I see ehh, questions hard like Wetin. I say ok maybe na experimental session. I enter quant, it was even tougher. I say ok it's better for this quant is to experimental. Apparently I went through all my sessions and the all felt foreign. Bros GRE no be beans. I prepared in 1 mnth and 2 weeks. I wasn't ready, needed more time. Please if u are not very comfortable in the practice tests in magoosh or powerprep, don't register for the GRE yet. Somehow those test especially the hard sessions are a true mirror of the real thing.
Verb-151 Quant- 150
I could have done better, If I had more time to prepare. Cherios and good luck Great debrief! Gbam! Your take aways are true also. In retrospect, I wish I had gotten to a comfortable practice test score before securing a test date. That's the best tip o. Keep practising, and when you are sure of yourself as per your target score, secure a test date. |

Don't get bolded, *nods in agreement with italic* Nt happy with that verbal performance at all I used the Manhattan word list at the end of the 5lb, and the Top 100 Most Frequently Used Words on the GRE (crunch prep). I meant all but one of the words were straightforward, and my pre - GRE vocab wasn't strong like that. Where the issue lies is being able to get the 'big picture' the mini - passage is trying to convey. Especially for those 3 blankers. |
Education › Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by happyday: 9:17pm On Dec 07, 2015 |
CarterIV: From my experience, I'll suggest the following...
Mangosh and ETS materials (the 3 of them ) covers the entire scope of the test.. Infact unless you know the material inside out or it's beginning to bore you, u nid nt to look for any other material.
Familiarize yourself with the power prep, I couldn't imagine that the interface is carbon copy with the real test. And I don't think the power prep is easier, the difference is that it's nt adaptive unlike the test that could get harder when he see say you be baale and also during prep you are not under any pressure, that's what makes it looks easier... In power prep had V-147 and Q-162 in my final practice, just 3 points higher than test scores...
Practice 4hour stretch, i was so tired in the last section which happens to be Quant and I started begging God for it to be the experimental section... Wen I saw the result I knew it wasn't... You know the point of been tired that you read a question twice and your interpretation is different it's dat bad... For ppl going to jkk, dy no allow us comot Hall during break, I'll advise you eat very well and also go in with an energy drink.
Concerning the verbal, based on my experience o, used the 2 mangosh apps.... I saw less than 4 words I picked up from the app... Infact I think it's pointless to be memorizing vocabulary except you start early (like 6months) wen u can be taking daily dose of 5 new words... All I was able to do was courtesy the mangosh videos, the strategies are on point, I think most of my points came from comprehension... Horrible outing with the blank filling...
Finally... Gre is a function of "the more you give the more you get".... Even at 165 you can always do better... Also confidence helps a lot, if you start panicking because you miss one question it will upset your mind and you will perform woefully... The guys that sat with me both sides... Wia lamenting throughout as if it will solve the problem... Even if you are ill prepared goto the test like a Boss with believe... Me ehn, quantitative was nt really d wahala it was verbal buh as I ws ticking the verbal in my mind I knew ETS was winning but I didn't let it get to me, infact my first verbal I can hardly get 6 but wen d second came it was relatively easy(adaptive test factor played)
Also research schools before going. Some peeps will go with competitive school without preparing for the worst... I picked 2 badass, 2 just OK and 2 fair... You never can tell, It could just turn out to be your off day I wish I found this thread earlier, fear no wan may I write this test since last year as I know 2 ppl wey ETS flog, buh wen I saw it happening for guys I was inclined to invest my 43k
PS: I MIGHT BE WRONG IN SOME CASES, viewers discretion is advised I didn't have access to the Powerprep effort the real tests. Would have loved it though. Also, I took one Magoosh practice test 2 days out. Even though it was ridiculously harder than my real tests, my scores in both are fairly the same. Magoosh tests are overly pronounced on the vocabulary, which in my opinion does not reflect the real test. There was only on ewers I couldn't get the meaning on my actual test. I'd think ETS is keen on testing critical reasoning skills, more than ability to cram dense vocab. So, by all means, one can only be fairly confident of the verbal after being exposed to different questions and passages, noting especially how the answer choices are diabolical and all seem utterly pleasing. |

My GRE test - taking experience : I took the GRE (paper based) for the first time, and I got my scores a month after ; 157Q, 157V, 5.5AWA. I started studying about three months to the test date, in three phases. Weeks 1 - 4: I dabbled into practice tests (I now realise I 'wasted' them). I corrected my mistakes in the practice tests I took, went through about 20 Vocab tests in Gruber, finished the first 5 chapters in Manhattan 5lb book (Quant section), and refined my approach in the practice etwas for the second time.
Practice Test 1: ETS paper test. I scored mid 150s on both sections, so I thought I should focus on Verbal and Quant in equal measures. I started with the Gruber practice tests, focusing on only the Quant and Verbal sections only. I also improved my vocabulary by working on the Vocab tests at the end of Gruber. I would mark my work, identify strange words and look them up in the dictionary.
3 weeks into this, I was able to come up with 8 Vocab decks, split into 100 words each. I memorised as much as I can per day using the spaced repetition technique. Also, I realised my Quant mistakes came from not understanding how standard deviation is being tested in the QC section, so also percentiles, number properties and geometry. I took the MGRE mixed with Nova, towards the end.
Practice test 2, 161Q, 158V. I used this to get more comfortable with the test layout and identify particular areas of weakness to work on.
Test Day : I woke up early enough, observed my daily routine and warmed up with a few Algebra problems in 5lb to knock myself into test mode.
I had to start asking around for the test centre on test day. This, I'm sure, cost me as I wasn't well composed on starting the test. I was checked in, went through the routine. I had planned to write the draft first before the actual essay. But this was not to be. Exam anxiety, I think.
For the Issue task, I developed my introduction, brief body, alongside 3 examples, then conclusion.
Next was the Argument. I checked the fallacies in the task given, and quickly punctured those fallacies in my write up. The only prep I did for the AWA is to write out the 6.0 essays in the Official Guide, and then study the structure.
And then it was Verbal, verbal, quant, quant. For the first quant sections, I spent too much time confirming my answers for the first 3 or 4 QCs, which left me with little time for the Numeric Entry questions. In fact, I had to guess on about 6 questions.
Now that my scores are in, I'm a bit disappointed with my Quant. Test anxiety definitely crept in.
Takeaways : 1. Take full - length practice tests which should with you down and mentally challenge you. The GRE requires your brain to be in full working mode, for over 3 hours. Prepare for this.
2. Don't expect a miracle. When you take the practice tests, and you are nowhere your target, don't console yourself by saying test day would definitely better. More often, it can be worse. In your practice tests, though you are working with time, your brain knows this is just practice, and you won't take it seriously as on test day. On test day, it might go like this :"I need to seriously ace this test. If I don't, I'm never getting into a good US college, which means I might never get out of this country, and would never make it in life! ". By the way, getting out of the country is a bad reason for wanting to the GRE. If you are scoring in the 150s in your tests, don't expect to climb to 160 on the real thing.
3. Register for the test you are comfortable with your practice tests. I know you need to pick a test date quickly before the deadline, but there is no point in rushing to register when you know you are nowhere your target.
Lastly, gather good materials and practice only with those. Of course, the Official Guide comes first. Check page 1 of this thread for those materials.
Thank you. |

olatricia: Hello my mentors, how y'all doing. Wrote my ICAN last paper a week ago and ever since I have been experiencing a 'block head'. I can't even read my mails in the office. I just skim through. Finally today, I was able to reactivate and the first thing I laid my hands on was this 'Gruber's GRE watever' sent to my mail by dat very good badt guy on this thread.
Ok, my point is, I seem to ve lost momentum because I read here that even after passing the GRE, finding the right school and scholarship, I might still need some monies, at the least, to startup living out there, pay rent and all that. This dampened my courage because, hmmmm, Na only me and God o. No help or support whatsoever (at the moment). So, am torn between the choice of continuing with this course of studying abroad and starting to study for my next professional qualification.
Guys, what do advise? I know I can't get it all free, even if I get the tuition, how about accommodation, feeding, etc. Do I concentrate on some other things like my professional exams and maybe a job with a better earning muscle at d moment and then pursue my graduate studies later on? and btw, for how many years is a GRE result valid? Am so at a crossroad and don't really know what to do.
Any which way, am continuing am gonna see this Gruber's test to the end, even if not for anything, for my own self development. Mentors'please say something.
Thanks as always.... Thank God you are working, you aren't alone, so your fears are founded. First off, why do you want to go for yet another professional qualification? Take a deep breath, dearie. You just concluded one, close your eyes, enjoy the silence. Open them, reward yourself anyhow and congratulate yourself. You were experiencing the block, cos you are already burned out. Also, grad admission and schooling is a marathon for a reason. I strongly suggest you get a job, help your siblings of you need to and bring others up. As you do this, create a timeline for the process. I guess you start with the GRE, forget all else for now. Gather materials, focus on doing your best. When You are sure you did well, keep the scores aside, they are valid for the next 5 years. And you move on to the next, which will vary depending on your intended program. |

You aren't strange, and it happens to even the best of us. Unfortunately or fortunately, there are no short cuts to it, you gotta just try and fail. Once you fail, you learn what you did wrong and improve. This is very key. You need to improve your game for the next one. It's a general key of life success, not only in dating. For now, get a nice haircut suitable for your face, be neat, dress comfortably and presentably and aim at establishing friendships with ladies. For now, don't push it, just be friends with them. Let them know you are genuinely interested. Don't pick too many at once, settle on a girl you like, and keep the convo moving. Find something that interests you about her, read about chat topics on this thread, and be funny. And contrary to what you might think, being funny can be learnt. Be relaxed, and look for simple ways to calm the atmosphere, before you know it, she's gonna be reeling with laughter. One at a time, don't forget that. Forget about kissing, smooching and all.
