Did they have any physical knowledge about Elijah?
No! if they were looking for physical Elijah in John then they would have known that John didn't have the appearance of their prophet, thus they would ve saved themselves the stress of approaching John and those useless interrogations of are you this, are you that.

What they were looking for was Elijah in personification of someone else. If John had told them that he was Elijah, they would have no choice than to take him as Elijah.
They ve already known the fact that John wasn't an Ordinary person, He was having a spirit of one of the prophets they were expecting.
