EducationParents Happy As Jamb Scraps Use Of Scratch Cards by Hardeysolution(op): 12:46pm On Oct 22, 2016
The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has, in a recent decision, planned to stop the use of scratch cards for registration and checking of results.

Parents in Lokoja however, have applauded the decision of the board saying it will reduce corruption in the system.

In separate interviews on Friday, the respondents commended JAMB and the Federal Government for the move.

A parent, Mr Amos Ajagun, said: “I support the scrapping of JAMB scratch cards because some of the people that sell the scratch cards cheat the students by selling above the actual cost.

‘“The decision will also reduce fraud and enable parents to access and check the result themselves,’’ Ajagun said.

He thanked JAMB and implored the Board not to relent in its efforts to sanitise the education sector.

Another parent, Mrs Roseline Ajogun said the decision was favourable to both parents and students alike.

“I believe all parents and students alike support the decision to scrap the JAMB scratch card. It is unfortunate but the truth is that most people who sell the cards are corrupt.

“They do not care about how parents or students struggle to get the money; as a parent, I gladly welcome the decision,’’ she said.

Ajogun thanked the government and JAMB authorities for the decision and appealed to them to revamp the education sector to guarantee a better future for the country.

EducationJAMB Rejects Three Years Result Validity by Hardeysolution(op):
The Registrar of the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) Prof. Ishaq Oloyede has asked the House of Representatives to quash the bill that validates three years JAMB result usage.

The JAMB boss stated this at the University of Ilorin in Kwara State while answering questions from journalists, that the bill when passed will only hurt the students rather than help them.

He noted that JAMB sets achievement tests and not aptitude test, therefore, such system will not work in Nigeria.

Professor Oleyede says the bill is a product of acrimony and if passed would be counter-productive.
While urging President Muhammadu Buhari not to assent to the bill, he further noted that the country does not have a stable curriculum.

He appealed to members of the House of Representatives to critically look at the issues before taking a stand, as it is harmful to the future of the students.

Senate Recommends Three Year Validity

The Nigerian Senate had extended the validity of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination results for three years from the date of the examination.

Lawmakers of the upper chamber took the decision to amend the JAMB Act during Thursday’s legislative proceedings.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TetFund, Senator Jibrin Barua, read the report of the committee which was mandated to work on the act.

The committee recommended that a candidate who meets the requirements for admission and is duly qualified shall remain so qualified for three years.

The committee also recommended that a candidate awaiting admission shall be given preference in the succeeding year over fresh applicants who shall only become eligible when the backlog has been cleared

What kind of poor defence is this? I really wonder if you reside in Ogun State. Amosun has been eaten up state workers' deductions for more than a year now and you find that acceptable?

Ogun State civil servants are right in their call on the governor to pay them what is due to them. Many of them save a large chunk of their salaries in cooperatives. The governor should not have dipped his hands into their savings.
I am an indigene and I know what is going on. Go and google the idea behind it and you'll understand. Is he owing them salaries?
Politics#savenigeria: The Unacceptable Trait Of Nigerians by Hardeysolution(op): 9:34am On Oct 20, 2016
THE UNACCEPTABLE TRAITS OF NIGERIANS

I am a recognised member of the federal republic of Nigeria by the law. It's quite disappointing that majority of my fellow Nigerians are not the group of people that can make a country move forward. I categorically say that if 30% of Nigerians are present in Europe, China, America as citizens, the country will not know development. I am forced to say do we have black brains too? Giant of Africa?

A Nigerian is better defined as naysayers, who nothing good could happen in their arena but will result to throwing shades at the leader. A Nigerian is a blatantly sentimental person who for the sake of tribe and region forgets the unity of the nation. A Nigerian is someone who goes up to the political office and forgets the people by which they got there. A Nigerian Is someone who fulfils selfish interests at the detriment of others. A Nigerian is someone who never would be contented with what they have but longs after what they can't get. What made us like this?

I discover that western World has a better environment because of the transferable traits from their ancestors. Nigeria's early men were filled with hatred and selfish interests. This led to the death of culture and tradition of Nigeria. Shouldn't we wonder why we act well outside the country?

During the era of Obasanjo, there was unnecessary rampage to discredit the administration. This was a factor which slowed down development in Nigeria. Civilian govt was to bring back democracy, but Nigerians led it into a nameless govt.

Religion intolerance is round the heads of the giant of Africa, strong nation of the world. Reason being that, Nigerians propagate hatred by wrong doctrines. What was to save now destroys.

Nameless are the traits which are unacceptable to the reasonable society found among Nigerians. Corruption, tribalism, religious intolerance, name it. No wonder someone will say, 'I better die than being a black African in my Second World if in existence '

Don't you think about the future? Aren't your generation a concern to you? Do you want them to inherit corruption, tribalism? For 100 years? When shall we come together to form love? Our Senate is corrupted buy our votes. Our representatives are selfish. We put them there. The environment moulded the judicial system into corrupt system. Our executive arm is out of the way.

I am concerned, wailing, weeping, unhappy. I want to see a better Nigeria.

PoliticsGroup Warns Ogun Workers On Strike Plan by Hardeysolution(op): 7:58am On Oct 20, 2016
A pro-democracy group, the Campaign for Good Governance, has criticized the labour unions in Ogun for calling on the state workforce to proceed on an indefinite strike from tomorrow (Thursday, 20 October, 2016).

The group described the call as politically- motivated, especially coming on the heels of a reported meeting by some of the union leaders with opposition politicians at the last World Teachers’ Day.

The state government had on Tuesday, through a statement by the Secretary to the Government, Barr Taiwo Adeoluwa, described the proposed strike as patently illegal and robed in politics, threatening to invoke the “no work, no pay” clause of the Trade Dispute Act.

According to a press release signed by its Publicity Secretary, Mr Ganiyu Lasisi, the Campaign for Good Governance said, “The industrial action is not about non payment of salary as no worker is being owed salary by the Amosun administration. This agitation can only be politically-induced as no reasonable union will call out workers on a strike sorely on cooperative deductions, especially during the current economic downturn in Nigeria.”

Lasisi said the Trade Union Congress, which a few months ago honoured Governor Ibikunle Amosun at the national level with the Excellence Award in Leadership in recognition of his being labour-friendly, should not be seen to recant so soon, noting that the union should not simultaneously approbate and reprobate.

“At the risk of being dubbed the government mouthpiece, we hasten to say that the current government of Ibikunle Amosun pays above the Minimum Wage and we stand to be corrected, it is the only government in Nigeria that implemented the increment across board and up to the level of local government. The current posturing may push the government to rue the decision, which ballooned the monthly wage such that the worker in Ogun State earns more than its counterpart in any part of the federation, and the payment of gratuities to retirees from 2008, three clear years before it was inaugurated.”

As we have had cause to intervene in the past, “While it continues to receive its monthly salary as and when due, it will amount to gross insensitivity for the workforce, whose number is less than one per cent of the population of Ogun State, to insist that all its demands have to be met when the State whose monthly wage bill is over eight billion naira now receives about one billion naira from the Federation Account. The mere fact that Ogun State continues to pay salaries where many states are unable to do so should constitute some food for thought.

The group opined further that “The socio-economic turmoil in major oil-producing countries like Brazil and Venezuela is an indication that no country is immune from the effects of the slump in global oil prices.

“We believe the majority of workers in Ogun appreciate the devotion of the government to their welfare, including the refusal of the governor to contemplate salary adjustments or right-sizing in the face of the current economic challenges facing the country.

“We urge labour unions to be weary of the antics of desperate politicians in order not to become a tool in their hands by design or default. The timing and comments credited to the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) at this difficult period in Nigeria raise more questions than answers for anyone familiar with the political calculus in Ogun State. Therefore, the strike should be shelved without any ado,” the group said.

While re-stating the socio-economic transformation of Ogun by the Amosun-led administration as its motivation, the Campaign for Good Governance urged the state government to pursue its diversification programme, especially in the agriculture sector, with deliberate speed and single-minded commitment so that sooner than anticipated the state could return to an even keel financially.
PoliticsOgun State To Invoke A 'no Work, No Pay' Penalty On Workers if They Go On Strike by Hardeysolution(op): 7:51am On Oct 20, 2016
The Ogun State Government has described the proposed strike “called by a few disgruntled elements” in the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) as illegal.

In a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Taiwo Adeoluwa, on Monday, the State Government wondered why this few, unpopular elements would seek to lead workers out on a misguided strike action since government has not defaulted in the payment of salaries as and when due.

“For instance, the Ogun State government paid its workers September salaries on September 25, 2016,” the statement said.

It added: “With regards to the backlog of unpaid cooperative deductions, the SSG added that the state government has also kept faith with an agreement it reached with labour leaders in March 2016 to the effect that one month of cooperative deductions would be paid, alongside monthly salaries, every two months.

“We promised to pay outstanding gratuities when we receive bulk funds from the Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) but this has not been forthcoming due to the dwindling revenue profile of the state.”

Barrister Adeoluwa said that, in addition to this, the Ogun State Government is also aware of the fact that under the extant Public Service rules, “the TUC/NLC, which signed the notice of strike action issued on Monday, have no roles in calling workers out on a strike action at the state level. On the contrary, it is only the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council that is authorised to do so.”

The statement said: “In view of this, the Ogun State Government therefore declares the proposed strike action as illegal, unreasonable and totally uncalled for while urging the generality of its workforce not to heed the call of a few misguided elements whose motive is clearly political.”

To buttress this point, the Ogun SSG said information at the disposal of the State Government has shown that the labour leaders have ulterior motives beyond the protection of the interest of workers. This is further exemplified by what played out during the commemoration of the 2016 World Teachers Day when labour leaders, against the grain of Civil Service Rules, hired a musician and sang the praise of a politician for hours on end.

“In the circumstance, the State Government hereby serves notice that it will invoke the ‘no work, no pay’ rule of the Trade Dispute Act in relation to any worker who chooses to embark on this illegal strike action,” the statement further said.

The letter further says the Senate of the university should take immediate steps to implement the directive of the President and report back to the Federal Ministry of Education.

Workers and students of the institution recently trooped out in jubilation following the dissolution of the school’s governing council and the suspension of the selection of the vice chancellor by the federal government.

According to the staff and students, the federal government’s decision was a step towards the redemption and integrity of the institution, which for weeks had been hit by crisis after the exit of the immediate past Vice Chancellor, Prof Bamitale Omole

Workers of the university under the aegis of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff of Universities (NASU) of OAU had begun their protests and strike since June 6, after taking the university authorities to court over the appointment of Salami as the new vice chancellor.

However, NUC Executive Secretary, in a terse statement on Monday, said: “President directs Senate of OAU to appoint acting vice chancellor.

“President directs reopening of all offices in OAU for normal administrative and academic activities.”

Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju told Nigerian Tribune on Monday that “what really happened is that the Federal Government announced the dissolution of the governing council and also instructed that the processes that may lead to the appointment of a substantive vice chancellor be put on hold, pending the determination of the court case; and the follow-up to that is what the Federal Government did today by telling us that the Senate of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, should immediately recommend a qualified person for appointment as an acting vice chancellor for the university. That is where we are now.. .
