– President Muhammadu Buhari has suspended his embattled Chief Of Staff, Abba Kyari. Kyari has been in the news lately over allegations of receiving N500 million from telecoms giant, MTN in order to facilitate a reduction of a fine handed to them by the NCC. President Buhari set up a panel to look into the allegations and reports indicate the panel recommended his suspension. Presidency directed the Inspector General Idris to investigate the role of chief of staff in N500m MTN scandal – Mr Kyari was accused of receiving a bribe from MTN Telecommunications Company to influence the government with the fine put against the company Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Whatsapp President Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly ordered the Special Investigation Panel of the Nigerian Police Force to investigate his chief of staff Alhaji Abba Kyari over bribery accusations. READ ALSO: How Buhari appointed first ‘cabal’ into his government – Paden The Vanguard reports that the investigation might not be unconnected to the supposed N500million bribery money said to have been paid to the Kyari by the officials of South African owned MTN Telecommunications Company with the intent that the chief of staff effect on the incumbent government to discontinue its heavy position on the $5billion fine. The source, who asked not to be named, said: “Officials of MTN, who were invited and interviewed over the allegation, have vehemently denied that any such money emanated from the telecommunication company and that since the beginning of the $5billion fine saga, nobody had been approached for bribe. “Another thing is that if such volume of money was paid through the banks, discreet investigation of financial dealings on the part of MTN and on the part of the COS has so far not revealed any transactions of such”. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), leveled a $5 billion fine on MTN for failing to disconnect subscribers with unregistered phone lines bought before January 2012. Sahara Reporters recently published the report claiming that the officials of the telecommunications company gave a bribe of N500million to Abba Kyari, to interfere and use his closeness to the Nigerian leader, to force the government to give MTN a safe landing. READ ALSO: Buhari’s Chief of Staff accused of corruption It comes as the telecommunications giant failed to fight the huge fine imposition, initially through the courts and later through diplomatic means. The presidency apparently worried by the accusation is said to have directed the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris to probe the allegation and come out with findings regarding the accusation. |

IT began as an innocent question but soon degenerated into a heated argument. And what is this question, one might? Between Lagos and Ogun, which has more industries? The Lagos fans would not imagine any state in the country taking the lead in terms of commerce and industrialisation. They were ready to put their last kobo on the line. They readily cited the ports and some industries around the Ogba and Ikeja axis. But after a thorough analysis, it was generally agreed that Ogun State is now the industrial hub of the nation. The state governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun attested to this recently during the administration’s second anniversary. Senator Amosun would tell anyone who cares to listen that Ogun has the largest number of industries and that the state is now a preferred choice destination for investment. And this boast is not hot air. An accountant of repute with many years of experience, Gov. Amosun has been able to muscle industries in the state which hitherto paid taxes and levies to the Lagos State to put their money where their mouth is. And he has succeeded in this regard such that from a base of an Internal Generated Revenue, IGR, of N730m as at May 2011 every month, it rose to N3.8b in May 2013 and is still counting. Thus, according to the Governor,”today, Ogun State is not only open for business, it is business”. For him, the economic gains are there for all to see. With 123 companies showing readiness to locate their manufacturing outfits in the state and 32 of this figure already on ground at different levels of operation, while 27 have fully commenced operations, Ogun no doubt is gradually becoming the hottest ‘industrial hub’ in town. Perhaps, it is against this backdrop that the State government says its Bureau of Lands and Survey is being restructured to make it more efficient with transparent and accountable operations. |

President Muhammadu Buhari has begun to fish for replacements for under-performing and ‘unknown’ ministers in his cabinet, Sahara Reporters writes. President Muhammadu Buhari has begun to fish for replacements for under-performing and ‘unknown’ ministers in his cabinet, Sahara Reporters writes. It reports that the move follows outcry that has trailed the performances of his ministers in the last one year. This development comes just days after the controversy that trailed an interview granted by Aisha to the BBC Hausa Service in which she claimed that unknown people have taken over her husband’s cabinet. While the President did reply his wife in the most unusual manner, it however gave him some concern over where his government is headed and he has now decided to weed out ‘useless’ elements from his kitchen cabinet. While there are yet to be names mentioned for those to leave the cabinet, expected to be high on the least are ministers who have been embroiled in scandals and those who are consistently under-performing. NAIJ.com recalls that President Buhari was accused by a veteran northern politician Junaid Mohammed of turning the government into a family business. It however remains to be seen if the President would correct this assertion as well. |

The Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, yesterday called on the federal government to accord a special status to his state, explaining that about 423 companies with a minimum of over N2 billion investment capital are caurrently operating from the state. Out of these companies, according to the governor, over 100 have opened shops since the beginning of his administration adding that 14 new ones are in the process of inauguration. Amosun disclosed during the opening of eighth National Council on Industry, Trade and Investment going on in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. The governor said Ogun State was next to Lagos State in terms of non-oil revenue to the federal government, adding that more companies have their operational base in the state. The success, according to Amosun, was not unconnected with the realisation of partnering the organised private sectors at boosting the potential of the state. He said: “To this end, our administration has continued to maintain and expand on existing infrastructures while new ones are being constructed. The results of these infrastructural developments are seen in the increase in investment inflow into Ogun State. “We have continued to reap the benefits of our prudent financial management and re-engineered our internally generated revenue (IGR) drive. We have increased our IGR from the modest sum of N700 million monthly which we inherited at the beginning of our administration in 2011, to over N6billion per month in 2014, though, currently reduced to an average of N4.8 billion monthly due to the current economic recession in the country. “As of now, our state is second only to Lagos State in the ratio of the monthly IGR to the monthly FAAC allocation. This has allowed us to sustain payment of workers’ salaries, while also continuing with other development projects in all other sectors of our economy. “According to the 2014 Ease of Doing Business Subnational rankings, our state recorded the most improvement of all the 36 states in Nigeria. This was compared to the states, very poor ranking of 34th at the inception of our administration in 2011. “We also introduced the concept of a “One Stop Shop” to assist investors in their interactions with government particularly during their early stage. I am happy to report that about 423 major companies/industries are presently operating in the state, while over 100 new significant companies have opened shop since the advent of our administration. “Even in our current harsh economic climate, another 14 are currently in the process of commissioning their industries/ factories. Indeed, we hope that President Muhammadu Buhari will help to inaugurate some of these industries before the end of the year. Ogun State is now officially the industrial hub of the nation.” |
