Engineering, NATE, has appealed to
the Federal Government to release the
white paper on the Ernest Shonekan
panel on the disparity between Higher National Diploma, HND, and university
degree. The National President of NATE, Dr.
Leo Okereke, made the appeal
weekend while addressing a press
conference in Owerri. “Mr. President Sir, 11 years is more
than enough time for a circular to be
issued in the civil service. “We urge you to demonstrate the
political will to release this long
awaited circular,” Dr. Okereke
pleaded. NATE leadership expressed serious
worry that products of polytechnics
were known not to rise beyond level
14 in the civil service, adding that
many of them had been frustrated out
of service when their juniors were promoted above them on account of
their HND qualification. Dr. Okereke recalled with grief that
instead of implementing the
government white paper, Mr. Steve
Oronsaye, who was head of service at
the time, convened another meeting
at the instance of National Council on Establishment. “A communiqué was issued at the end
of the parley that the Office of the
Head of Service should proceed to
issue implementation circular without
further delay. This is where the matter
has been since 2009,” Okereke lamented.

ChriaNnatu: I must confess, am also suffering from the same issue, though mine is she's a Jehova Witness. My fiancé suggested we go for court marriage at first, I disagreed cus I felt with little pressure from her, her parents especially her mum would give their consent to our marriage but over a year plus nothing positive is coming out, I had to later agree we go for the court wedding but am beginning to notice that my girl is developing cold feet. She keeps telling me that she is buying into my previous idea of getting our parents consent before marriage. That if I do love her that I can switch church just to please her parents then later we decide on our church as a family. My problem is ; won't my switching to their church offend my own religion and my own God, doesn't it show that her parents would have undue influence over our marriage if I yield to their demand? Though my parents have wielded into the issue by visiting her parents and advising them to give us their consent since the both of us are in love but still her mother is adamant, my parents later have to give me consent to wed her in a court that sooner or later, her parents would come to their senses. What must I do, cus I do from my heart love this girl and I know she does love me too.

LAGOS — The Federal Government, weekend, was advised to quickly tackle the rising rate of unemployment in the country as its rate was estimated to be around 40 per cent of the entire population.

The immediate past World Bank’s Vice President for Africa, Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili, who gave the advice also said: “I am one of those Nigerians who are praying for Nigeria oil to dry up so that our government can quickly take immediate actions towards diversifying the nation’s source of revenue.

Alternative to oil should emerge immediately to cure the oil politics in our nation.”

Erstwhile Vice President of the World Bank for Africa, Dr Oby Ezekwesili

Speaking as a guest speaker at the 16th Success Digest Enterprises Awards Presentation Dinner, weekend, in Lagos, the former World Bank’s Vice President and also a recently appointed member to the Board of Directors of Bharti Airtel in Africa, said: “Nigeria ruins its opportunities to grow economically with the likes of Singapore, Malaysia etc that had their independence almost the same period with our country, simply because Nigeria lacked the instrumentality of entrepreneurship of the public sector which had helped its contemporaries to grow tremendously.”

She further advised that a census on unemployment should be carried out, saying: “The problem of unemployment requires a more aggressive method or identity towards addressing it, than what is currently being done. I acknowledge that the government from the blue print is demonstrating an effort to addressing it. The effort should be enhanced considering the havoc unemployment is creating in this country.

“Government at whatever level should be responsible for addressing this and create jobs. Half of our population is youth within the ages of 18 and 32, but about 40 per cent of our population is unemployed. There is an average of two million new unemployed youth every year joining the existing stock year by year. I suggest that a census of unemployed youth be done in Nigeria immediately.”

While speaking on the topic entitled: “Nurturing an entrepreneurial mindset” Ezekwesili said: “Government has a responsibility to the people by providing necessary and adequate infrastructure needed to boost the economy. Taxation and other levies should not be a hindrance to business if government is able to provide every amenity needed by entrepreneurs as it is in the United States that is regarded as father of capitalism.

“Public sector has responsibility for describing the direction and vision it wants the economy to go. Public sector requires quality leadership to build good nation. For a new Nigeria to emerge, we need a public sector that has entrepreneurial mindset that should be able to spur the private sector towards achieving economic growth. Our governments have underperformed over several decades as the country has been driven with people with deficit of integrity, lack of confidence, lack of competence and above all lack of structural innovation ability.”

Ezekwesili also advocated that skilled and well diagnostic programme of entrepreneur be developed and decentralized throughout the community within Nigeria as part of the ways towards reducing the alarming rate of unemployment.

Telecom services provider, MTN has appealed for understanding from its customers and other key stakeholders as it continues its Network Modernization and swap-out exercise.

The company’s Corporate Services Executive, Mr. Wale Goodluck at a press briefing on Tuesday in Lagos said the various activities related to MTN’s Network Modernization are progressing steadily but noted that it was being affected by recent flood nationwide and insecurity.

“We regret, however, that the pace of work has been considerably challenged by the spate of insecurity coupled with the unprecedented flooding being experienced in many parts of the country,” Goodluck stated.

The network optimization exercise will affect over 4,000 base stations out of over 10, 000 across the country.

According to Goodluck “the task that we are undertaking is tantamount to building a new network. We are seeking to replicate what we achieved over a six year period in nine months”.

He explained that considerable progress has been recorded with regards to the ongoing network improvement plans adding that several swap-outs have reached very advanced stages of completion.

“The entire network modernization process is a very logistic-intensive one and the problem of insecurity has seriously affected the pace of work in some parts of the country.”

In at least 13 states, Goodluck added that flooding has created additional logistic impediments such that the pace of the ongoing network modernization efforts has slowed down.

While acknowledging that MTN’s customers have been experiencing some disruption over the last few weeks, the Corporate Service Executive said as much as possible, the company would stick to its original plan of carrying out the network procedures only at night, in order to minimize disruptions to services.

MTN’s current network modernization and swap-out exercise which began in July 2012 is expected to cover the entire country and was originally expected to span a period of nine months.

Its objectives are to considerably enhance capacity on the MTN Network and improve service quality. Under the project, which is being implemented by a combined team of MTN engineers and technical partners that include Ericsson, Huawei and ZTE, key network components are being swapped with the latest upgrades in the industry. Current power systems are also being replaced with hybrid power systems which are more environment-friendly.
