Lol. Those weren't kidnappers, trust me. I have encountered such people 2ce. First in enugu, then again in lagos. If u had gone with them, they would have spun u a tale that the goods were locked up somewhere in a warehouse and the person with the key is not around. Then they will tell you another story about Nigerians coming to their country to campaign and spraying them with "white paper bills" that magically transform into "colorful stickers" when washed with a particular chemical. They will demonstrate it to you and show you a box full of such paper and the proceed to wash some and transform them into 1000 naira notes. The other fellow will pretend to be amazed and pull you aside and tell you that it seems that the other one with the "white paper" doesn't know that he is holding naija currency and that you two should pool resources to buy the whole box and chemical for washing it. If their jazz catch you and if you are the greedy type, you will decide to pay a small token like say 100k to 200k to get a big box full of "1000 naira notes" that you will wash and transform into millions. Unfortunately, that wouldn't be the case, cos you'll realise late that the rest are just white paper and then realize that you have been duped.

Now, for those wondering how I know. It has always been a common way to dupe ppl back then when I was younger. In fact, when u hear about 419 back then, it wasn't yahoo yahoo (where u see computer, not to talk about internet), but rather this. So, having been well informed about their tactics, I saw one of them and out of curiousity followed them and saw the whole gimmicks. When they started asking for money, I agreed and told them I want to go withdraw some money and left them and went on my way. Besides, back then, I was still a student and don't even have minimum balance for my account in Standard Trust then.

Actually, they didn't team up with apple to produce anything. They only produced the iphones and ipad as per Apple ordered. Don't get it twisted. It's like this, you give them ur specs and they mass produce it for you. By so doing, you won't need to open manufacturing plants to produce your device. It's not like they helped apple design their phone or anything. Besides, don't forget, up until recently, samsung provides the chips and screens used on apple phones and tablets.

The OP really hit valid points here especially with the OTA upgrade. Take for instance Tecno D5 users. They are stuck on gingerbread with no support from either the OEM nor from custom rom devs. So, it's like buying a phone you can only use for a short term before tech advances forces you to buy a new one. You can't compare that with phones from other OEMs take for instance Samsung Galaxy S3. It was released in May 2012 and still supported by the company up till next year cos it's gonna get the 4.4 kit kat update then. Meanwhile, it was released with 4.0 ICS. Now can you tell me that you can compare S3 with Tecno Phantom A, A2 or A+? Compare their screens, camera quality, build quality, processor, ram, user memory, etc and tell me that those phones can go toe to toe with S3. Now if it were you, would you not sell the Tecno phones at a far cheaper price than the samsung? Now, when u add other crazy features samsung integrates into their smartphones, Tecno will be blown out of the water. Now, that's just samsung. When you bring in Sony phones into the fray..... That's just gonna be an overkill. Cos you get to see phones with shatterproof glass that can withstand be run over by a car as small as a Toyota Corolla (Sony Xperia Acro S), Water proof up to a depth of 1meter for 30mins (Acro S, V, Z, ZR, Z1, Go), dust proof (Acro S, Z, ZR, Z1, V, Go). So, for all Tecno users out there. Trust me when I say that you are yet to have the real Android experience.

Check the frequency bands that the Tecno phone can operate on. It's possible that the local sim you tried using is on a spectrum that the Tecno phone doesn't operate upon or might even be a CDMA network which Tecno phones do not operate on.

I bought the phone less than two months after it was released. You should know the kind of reviews you will get at such time. Some issues are triggered based on wear and tear.

As per the update, you may want to know that I am currently on the latest version available in Nigeria (4.1.2) for Note II. The most current update is 4.2 and it's not available for Nigeria yet, last time I checked.

Dude, you're so wrong. 4.2.2 has been available for Nigeria ever since August. At least that was when I noticed the update prompt on my sister's Note 2.

@OP, as a user of the two phones, let me see if I can throw more light here.
Android is similar in function to Nokia Symbian of old. In that, it has great multi-tasking and tweakability. Pick any random android phone, go thru it, test out all the features. Is there any feature missing in it (that doesn't depend on a hardware component to be added)? I can bet you that there is an app for it already. Android is a world of possibilities. You get tons of apps to fit your daily need and most of them are for free. You are free to change any app that comes with ur phone by default (even system apps but that can cause ur phone to crash). Say for instance, you don't like the office app that came with ur phone, there are tons of free ones on the store. Are you a social junkie? Nothing fulfils your cravings like android. Take for instance, the facebook app can synchronise with your contacts and automatically update their numbers on ur phone with their facebook pics and updates. The contact app can sync your contacts between various social media networks and pull in updates for that contact so you can see your friend's facebook, twitter, instagram etc updates just by opening ur contacts. Is your phone unable to play some media files like asr, wav, divx, mkv? Have no fear. There are tons of free media players to suit ur needs (even vlc player is on android). Do you have multiple emails? No need to break the bank to subscribe to a bb package that allows multiple account. Your phone's default email app can handle all the popular email providers. Are you geek? Want to show off your geekry to ur friend, pick an android phone, install teamviewer and the login remotely to your pc over the internet and control ur pc. Install a terminal emulator and have a full blown shell at your fingertips. You can even use it to ssh/telnet into a device like a router and configure it. Don't want to lose ur bbm contacts? Have no fear, bbm is now on android too. Want to rush home to watch that crucial match but u're stuck in traffic? There're lots of free apps that enable u watch tv online. I can go on and on and on. But the best teacher is usually experience. I'll suggest you go for android but stay away from the china ones if you really want to enjoy your experience. Trust me, no matter the hype you hear about techno, gionee, infinix and co, it can't match the performance of devices from companies like sony, samsung, htc etc. If you are confused on which phone to get, you can tell me ur budget and I'll suggest one for you.

But on the "bad" side, due to the poor data services here, you'll have to spend more on buying data packages than u used to do while on a bb os 7.
