PhonesRe: iPhone5 Or Samsung Galaxy S3: Which Is Better? by henryskywalker2003(m):
I forgot to add this issue about apple products. They are not the kind of phone one buys with the intention of using it for more than 2years because there is no long term support for their devices like seen on symbian and bbos. To help u understand better take a phone like bb javelin or tour, or nokia n70. People still use and buy such phones as second hand and london used even though they were released like 5years back and 8years in the case of the nokia. Apps can easily be gotten for these phones both online and also on the app store as in the case of the bb. Even with the new rollout of OS by blackberry, javelin and tour got upgraded to ver 5 and apps still supports the OS ver 5. You can get facebook, twitter, etc apps on these phones after u wipe them when you buy them. But in the case of iphone3G, the phone came with ver 4.1 but only got an update to 4.2 and even at that, apps no longer support that version of iOS. Just imagine getting an iphone 5 and 3years down the line, you perform a wipe and want to re-install your apps only to told that the app no longer supports your platform. Imagine if it was a paid app and you have lots of paid apps that are no longer supported. Unlike the android platform that still support froyo (2.2) even though they are currently on jelly bean (ver 4.2.2) and about to launch ver 5.0
PhonesRe: iPhone5 Or Samsung Galaxy S3: Which Is Better? by henryskywalker2003(m):
In my humble opinion, I have never owned any of the two phones but have spent considerable time with both android and iOS devices and will list some things that will give u a good idea of the two platforms to help you make your choice.

Iphone prides itself on being of a great build quality but iphone 5 was launched amidst lots of issues. Example, some people saw that their phone's body was chipped right out of the box. Probably when it was being assembled. This is also found in the way the iphone5 body gets scratched pretty easily.
2nd issue was the issue of the camera being below par and having a shadow or hue on some pictures you take.

3rd issue which is a bit trivial for naija is the removal of google maps and suhstituting it with their own in house developed map app that gets people lost most of the time.

4th issue is the fact that one can't use the bluetooth to send and receive files like music and videos on an iphone. This issue is true as at iphone4s don't know if they have changed that policy yet.

5th issue and probably the most important. You need itunes installed if u intend to transfer media files and other stuff to your phone from a pc else you phone won't see the files you just copied into it.

6th issue, as at iphone4S you can't use multiple computers to do a sync or backup of your device.

On the plus side iphone is a great phone if u don't mind the restrictions imposed on the users else I'll suggest u jailbreak it. There are lots of apps on its appstore, great battery life as well.

On the other hand, android has the following issues.

1st issue, no out of the box encryption for the device's memory. Unlike the one found in blackberry and iphones. What this means is that even after a factory wipe and reset, it is still possible to glean data off the device. This is none issue for me because to do that, one needs some special software that is not easy to cone across and also some special skills are also needed that is not so commonly found so, this is not much of a deal.

2nd issue, from my estimates, I think the iphone might have a better battery life but only by a small margin.

In summary, I admit that am a big fan of android and would prefer it over any other platform because I started out with symbian and if u used one before u'll understand the level if tweak and optimisations available on symbian. It's like that on android plus much more. It is so tweak able that you can even overclock/underclock ur device processor to get more power/increase battery life respectively. Hell, you can even remove the entire android OS that came with your device and install a customised version that has more features than the one ur device came with.

So, my advice to you is to get the one that best suits your needs.
PhonesRe: Share Your Experience As Regards Your Phones Purchased In SLOT? by henryskywalker2003(m):
This is for folks that tell us that blackberry reduced their warranty and not slot. I have attached a pdf that clearly states the warranty period of the devices and peripherals that come with them.

P.S. Never knew the battery has a warranty period as long as 3months.

PoliticsRe: GEJ Should Be Impeached - LA Times Joel Brinkley by henryskywalker2003(m):
bubadaniel13: OP just a question for the confused Mr Joel Brinkley,Is GEJ the first leader of Nigeria?how many years has he spent on power so far?Nigeria has been ruled by bad leaders for decades and u expect GEJ to turn bad things around within three years, the writer of the article must be dreaming.
You and the 39 fools/idiots that liked ur comment are part of the reason this country will remain in the dark ages. Let me ask u fools/idiots a simple question. How long was President Sirleaf in power before the country turned around. Let me save u fools a bit of google search. She has been the president of Liberia since right after their SECOND CIVIL WAR. You fools talk about GEJ's humility and trash like that. Can GEJ agree 2 leave the safety of Aso Rock and govern from his house in the creeks? When the presidential mansion of Liberia got burnt just less than a year, after she was elected, this Lady deferred any diverting of funds to fix the palace and placed it low on their priority list and relocated her office to another ministry's building nearby and also relocated to her personal house. Can u imagine gej going to the office everyday from a location probably far from his office just after coming out from a civil war? She secured debt relief for her country few years after the war, she has once sacked her entire cabinet and replaced them with totally new people because of corruption, unlike ur beloved gej who knows how to reshuffle old hands. Even her brother who was a minister was not spared when allegations of missing funds was levelled against him and was subsequently sacked and yet another was sacked just because $200,000 went missing from his ministry meanwhile over here, we see cases of people stealing billions and still walk freely and ur gej promised us zero tolerance on corruption. Among her other achievements she was named among the tope 10 female leaders by Time magazine 2010, 10 best leaders in the world by Newsweek in 2010, 51st most powerful person by Forbes in 2006 and The Economist called her the best president the country has ever had. Can u imagine, if gej continues on this his current path, what the above mentioned would write about him? Oh sorry, I forgot. Fools like u can't do that. So, let me ask u fools one more time. Is it when gej has spent 3terms in office before it is ok for him to start doing something about the country and people can then question his actions? Or is it when we go through a 2nd civil war? Or probably after another military take over. Please help me understand why a woman is actually doing beta than this clueless fellow when all odds are stacked against her.

P.S. Do you know that Liberia is having a steady power supply more than we are? This was achieved right after the war that destroyed most of their power infrastructure.

fallguy: ^^
you should learn to read the philosophy of a detailed argument fully before spouting half baked comments.
I in the earlier posts I grouped open source and software given away for free as Libre software
and made my point on one aspect of it that is detrimental - mainly economically detrimental.
i dont want to elaborate some more that would be redundant.
come away from your typical mentallity which is the conventional praise of libre software
on moral grounds to access the other darker side of the argument i pushed.
johnbendie couldnt follow the argument i proposed which is a valid argument -
but veered over to praising libre software on its moral grounds -
morally, libre software advocates could (and have ) won national medals-
economically, the detriment of this librality is inevitable. do some thinking on this before
replying.
the devastation of libre software is not only economical but also projectural.
johnbendie said money could be made with open source still, i mean libre software ,
e.g people make money creating wordpress themes.
that's a pale response.
peripheral industries would inevitably have sprung up around any popular technology.
the peripheral industries would generate a tidy sum but not as high as what would be
generated by the commercial rakings of the main technology itself.
in a way the impact is hard to compute because it is an opportunity cost , not an
actual cost that is forgone, nevertheless the opportunity which is still a cost,
runs into (my estimate) $trillions!!.
it is this opportunity cost forgone by the libre spirit that i say is evil!
because an injection of that amount into the world economy - would have generated
lots more money! more billionaires - i'm talking from an objective and capitalist viewpoint.
i know what open source licenses state - dont educate me on that.
if you're to counter fault the core of my argument not tarry on fringe issues.
i grouped free and open software under libre software. my point is not obtuse so
stay on track and reply to the issue i brought up.
".. dont go around saying things like you said here next time.. "
- any sweeping reply. what "did i say here next time" , quote me within context!.
Well, what can I say? It's kinda hard trying to argue with someone already arguing with himself. Little advice. Next time u want to start a thread, let the content of the thread stick to the name you gave it.
SMH @ "I grouped Open source and Software given away for free as Libre Software". As if all Open Source software are given away for free or vice-versa.

P.S. Hope u know that " Libre" means "Free"?

PhonesRe: Share Your Experience As Regards Your Phones Purchased In SLOT? by henryskywalker2003(m): 9:35am On Feb 20, 2013
oluwaseunla: Probably a case of different experiences. I buy all my phones from SLOT Ilorin. Never had any problems. And SLOT doesn't fix warranty periods. That's done by the manufacturer. I'm aware that it was RIM that reduced the warranty period of blackberry phones, not SLOT. Don't know about their customer service though, but so far, they've been great. Any phone I return during warranty period gets repaired for free. The only problem I think I have is their sales people trying to sell U different softwares at the smallest excuse and sometimes, those softwares end up not being genuine. But on a general note, I'll give them a pass mark
Dude, be sure before u spew trash, RIM hasn't reduced their warranty check their website. If they do, all the trade unions in the world will sue and fine their pants off.
PhonesRe: Share Your Experience As Regards Your Phones Purchased In SLOT? by henryskywalker2003(m):
eastman11: Some people come to this forum to vomit all kind of rubbish just to settle personal scores or to run down people and their businesses. You have used a phone for a couple of weeks and wants them to change it to a new one without any proof that you bought it from them. Again some of us do not know how to use gadgets, some people give their phones to their children for them to play with hoping that Slot will give them new one once it's damaged.

Slot is the largest phone seller in this country and what made them big is because they sell genuine products. In the past 2yrs i have bought about 10 smart phone from them mostly as gift to others and for my personal use and i have no complain. If a phone worked properly for one month before having issues then look inwards you may have misused the phone and caused the fault.

No de come hia de yan trash.
Dude, u are either a big ode or u are a slot employee. Check blackberry website and they tell u that slot is one of their authorised dealers and repair centres and any phone bought from them has a 1year warranty that covers a variety of issues free of charge. So, how can you cum here and tell me that when a few weeks old phone starts having issues that the person shouldn't seek redress. The fact is that it's true that she didn't go there with a receipt but the truth is that it is not needed because they are an authorised service centre. All they needed to do was to check if it was still within the warranty and fix it as a service centre and not as the retailer because she didn't produce the receipt. My Nokia Dstv mobile phone was a gift and came wit no receipt. The phone fell down one day and the lock button got damaged. I took it to Nokia care at V.I. and it was fixed free of charge without being asked for a receipt or any rubbish like that.

@OP, The truth is that it's common knowledge within computer village that slot do sell refurbished and used phones as brand new. I usually advice people that they should always go with friends that are quite knowlegable on how to spot the differences in the two. When u buy a new phone next time, check to see if the imei written on the box corresponds with the one in the battery slot of the phone as well as the one inside the phone that u get buy dialing *#06#. Also check the life timer of the phone. There are different codes for different phones. Try and google the codes applicable to urs and check them when u buy and if suspect that it's not brand new, politely ask for the manager and when they refuse to attend to you, raise hell and make the people around know that you were being sold rubbish as brand new.
ProgrammingRe: OPEN SOURCE Has Been Evil Too! by henryskywalker2003(m): 12:48am On Feb 20, 2013
@OP, Dude u really need to do some research before posting stuff online. I think u have the common misconception about open source. Let me start off by saying this, Open Source Software (OSS) is NOT free software. True, most open source software are/can be obtained free of charge but don't go thinking that OSS means free as in free beer. U mentioned Napster and bittorrent protocol, go read up on them and u'll be surprised to see that they are actually proprietary softwares. That they are free is simply because the devs choose to make them free. Symbian OS is an Open Source software but it's not free. So, what exactly is OSS? In layman's terms, it simply means any software that the devs give out the source code to anyone that wants to get it without asking for money. U might ask, what stops such a person from modifying and releasing another software based on the original code? Licensing. Open Source licences ensure that even though people have access to view and modify your code, when they do so (even if it's just one line), they MUST credit the original devs work and also release their code as well, both upstream and to anyone that wants to view it. Now, if we were to follow your earlier description of OSS, we would call these softwares open source, Adobe Flash, Windows Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Internet Explorer, Safari browser etc. These are very common free softwares we use everyday but yet, they are proprietary softwares. Do you know that apps like Lotus Symphony, Zimbra, Asterisk, etc which are commerial products are actually OSS? Now you know what OSS actually means don't go round saying things like what you said here next time.

PhonesRe: Samsung Galaxy S IV To Launch In April by henryskywalker2003(m): 10:03am On Feb 04, 2013
CGKing: IV actually used an android, not for long though. When u talk of user experience, u can't compare the iPhone or iOS to android. When u talk about user friendliness, the iphone is just over the top. From simple tasks to animation to thrill, the iOS has got it pretty much handled as though it understands the way we think and feel. For someone like me that easily gets bored, swiping the screen to move to the next screen page is not just enough, the feel of these movements, the handling scores high with me. That is how u know a strong brand. Swipe at the iOS screen and then android and compare.

As for functionality, I would just give u 2 of many remarkable experiences I got with the iPhone.

1. When I bought the iPhone, my bb was switched off. I was thinking of how I'd transfer my contact to the iPhone knowing that the brand won't allow any kind of collab with any other device. So I started setting up the phone. First thing I did was to feed in my apple ID, credit card details and email. Then I just casually put on my bb cos its been off for so long. Barely 10 minutes after I put on that bb, I realized that all my email contact, phone numbers, the whole shibang was available on my iPhone. 10 mins. No Bluetooth on, no sim switch, no infra red, no nothing. I almost fainted, I spent hours thinking about it, I thought someone might have hacked into my devices; until I remembered it could be via my email which I also had registered on my bb.

2. I was looking for a particular business woman i met at a trip to calabar. She is into branding and her coy is very good. I had her on my phone but I couldn't remember her name and I have over 400 names on my phone. So I tried to ftch mail exchanges we had almost a year ago but google had cleaned them all out. So I did a search for branding in my email and managed to get her coy name. I located her number on my phone but she was not reachable on that line. At that time, the iPhone was prompting me that it wanted to sync my Facebook contacts with my phone contacts. I agreed and after about 10 mins, I don't know how it did it, it showed me the picture of the lady and her real name of Facebook. It had matched the number and her coy name from my phone to what it found on Facebook and synced everything, and provided me a link to her Facebook profile. I never had this lady in my Facebook account, I never knew her name, I called her by her coy name. Now all the numbers and mail contact on my phone have a face attached with links to Facebook profiles, whether I knew them or not. How cool is that?

I can't tell it all here man, the experience with iOS and the iPhone is simply kick asss. It's just doing everything man, the only thing left for it to do is to wipe me clean when I take a dump. Guy forget, android is till coming. But here we r talking about the big boys.
Dude, even my Nokia E5 does the above two you mentioned. ALL Sony android phones have facebook, twitter and linkedin integrated into their contacts out of the box with support for addins for other social networks like foursquare. Lets talk abt the things u can do in android u can't do with ur iphone.

1. Mobile hotspot out of the box
2. Bluetooth share
3. Adobe flash
4. No need 2 break the bank to get great apps.
5. Ability to tweak to your heart's desire.
6. OEM's even allow u 2 unlock bootloader to install custom roms. (Sony has a web page on their site that guides users thru the process of unlocking).
7. Over/underclocking of cpu.
8. Multi-windows (Samsung Note 1 and 2).
These are but a few I can think oat the moment. Will update the list whenI remember more.
