It was a gesture gone awry as hungry Nigerians “attacked” bags of rice donated by the President’s wife to the less privileged in Abuja. Photographs left show policemen battering the scrambling Nigerians at the International Conference Centre; then a policeman polices away his own bag of rice; and a Federal Road Safety Corps Marshall also takes his own. Right, an exhausted woman flattens out on the floor and two others cool down, perching atop their rice loot. All Photographs by FEMI IPAYE. - PM News.

ezeagu:
Okay, my thoughts:

With a country fought and won with by the blood of loved ones, friends and colleagues, Igbo and other same peoples (Ibibio, etc) would feel 1000% more ownership and responsibility plus belonging to the state which has been called Biafra. With this there is no way in the Igbo/Ibibio underworld that the situations that led to these kidnappers would happen which has led to a school bus disappearing. The first big thing is that all the damaging conflicts about identity would be little to gone, and the country would have had the same stability as Ghana now.

Why kidnapping wouldn't happen in Biafra as in Aba:
1. Aba is a city, Biafra was a country with more than 50,000 square kilometres of territory
2. The country would be more economically stable, and with the culture of the people, many people would afford to be armed with legal guns
3. The police would have been well fed
4. Graduated would be at work, kids would be at school

Get it? smiley

I would say the dream of Biafra is getting stronger again, as was predicted. . . .
Gbam!! Gbam!!!

It makes me laugh how Yoruba's think they are even fully involved in what is happening in Nigeria, Northerners anulled June 12 and put your son(Obasanjo) who is even an enemy to yorubas. Look at how Diya was humiliated and you are here thinkin your case is different from the Ndigbo. Oh its different cos Igbos are fighting for their right while you guys sit there and play fool to the Northerners.
Politics › You’ll Regret Dumping Pdp, Dampass Tells Mohammed Abacha by HighChief4(op): 1:35am On Sep 29, 2010
BARELY four days after Mohammed Abacha, son of the late former military head of state, defected to the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a prominent chieftain of the Kano chapter of the PDP, Alhaji Gambo Danpass, has declared that the young Abacha would soon regret his action.

Mohammed, who surprisingly dumped the Kano PDP, the platform for his gubernatorial ambition,Wednesday, last week, attributed his exit to the alleged injustice perpetrated by the party’s leadership in the sale of delegates and elective office forms in Kano recently.

But Danpass, who was a presidential campaign coordinator to the late Alhaji Abubakar Rimi, described Mohammed Abacha’s decision as a political misadventure, saying that his gubernatorial ambition in the CPC would turn out a mirage, as, according to him, “all the juicy positions have already been shared”.

His words: “There is no way Mohammed Abacha would become anything in CPC, as positions have already been shared. Besides, you don’t assume because you have money, then you automatically walk into any party and buy a position. You have to work for it. Those who are nursing ambition for elective offices on the platform of the CPC worked for it.”

Also, Dampass dismissed as baseless and false claims that the leadership of the PDP in Kano has been pocketed by Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, whose political divide, the Kwankwasiyya, controls the party’s machinery. He said that instead of rewarding Kwankwaso for his inestimable contributions to the party, he is being blackmailed.

He said: “It is wrong for people who gave little to expect too much. The former governor should be seen and regarded as the pillar of the PDP in Kano and he is the only person that remains a threat to the ANPP in Kano.”

Right now, most naija players do not deserve such recognition especially after their poor world cup outin, the only naija player that ought to be their on that list is Mikel, but you know this is a world cup year so it has to be determined by world cup performance and not club, so its suprisin how they included Essien. Honestly CAF is a joke and they are killing african football.

Nigeria's Mikel Obi has been named among the best young footballers in the world today.

Mikel has become a shine star for Chelsea since the new English Premier League kicked off, and his performance has also received recognition having been rated among the best passers in the English elite league.

Other players mentioned in the top young talents include Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Cesc Fabregas, Luis Suarez, Wayne Roone, Mesut Ozil, Gerard Pique, Joe Hart, Theo Walcott, Sergio Ramos, Thomas Vermaelen, Alexandre Pato, Alex Song, Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasri and Gareth Bale

Others include Gregory Van Der Wiel, Thomas Mueller, Sergio Busquets, Yoann Gourcuff, David Silva, Angel di Maria, Simon Kjaer, Gonzalo Higuain, Pedro Rodriguez and Edin Dzeko.

It is said that the prime years of a footballer are from ages 26 to 29. However, there are a lot of marvelous footballers who are younger than the aforementioned age.

Most of these footballers are currently plying their trade at top football clubs and have caught the eye of many with their wonderful performances. Teams like Barcelona, Chelsea, Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and of late, Real Madrid have all got a lot of

youngsters in their starting XI, and these footballers will only continue to improve.

Politics › Court Backs Egbetokun As Ogun Speaker. by HighChief4(op): 12:01am On Sep 24, 2010
An Ogun State High Court yesterday ruled that Tunji Egbetokun remains Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly, putting an end to the three-year-old trial of a suit instituted by Titi Oseni, the former Speaker, who was impeached in 2008.

Ms. Oseni had instituted the suit, number AB/236/08, against Egbetokun, Ogun State House of Assembly, and other 25 lawmakers, alleging she was wrongfully removed as a Speaker by her colleagues at the sitting of May 15, 2008.

The impeached Speaker, through her lead counsel, Bolaji Ayorinde, therefore, prayed the court to set aside the proceedings of the sitting and restrain Mr. Egbetokun from parading himself as Speaker of the House.

Counsel to Mr. Egbetokun and the House of Assembly, in the case which was instituted in 2008, Abraham Adeoye, raised an objection to the suit. He based the objection on the ground that the case was not properly brought before the court and that it failed to disclose a reasonable course of action, among other irregularities.

The counsel argued that the removal of Ms. Oseni and other principal officers of the House of Assembly was purely the business of the lawmakers, which the court cannot interfere with, except such removal violates the provision of the nation’s constitution.

The presiding judge, Gboyega Ogunfowora, agreed that the issue of removal is a matter the court cannot dabble into, and therefore, struck out the suit and upheld Mr. Egbetokun as the Speaker.

Costs against

The judge also awarded N10, 000 costs against Titi Oseni. Mr. Adeoye, while reacting to the ruling, described it as victory for democracy and the rule of law.

“The beauty of it is that it also shows that we have firm good judges that could be counted upon, even in the present situation. I, therefore, prayed that the warring factions abide by the ruling and allow peace to reign,” the counsel stated.

Mr. Egbetokun also said the development showed that the situation in Ogun State is like a stage, “where the executive, legislature, and judiciary are prominent actors.”

He also commended the judiciary over the judgment.
Politics › New Minimum Wage: Workers Threaten To Go On Strike Oct 1. by HighChief4(op): 11:45pm On Sep 23, 2010
The leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) may on October 1, 2010 call out workers on another round of indefinite strike action, if by then the Federal Government has not implemented the new minimum wage for workers as recommended by the tripartite committee .

The President of Non Academic Staff Union of Education and Associated Institutions (NASU), Comrade Ladi Iliya, dropped this hint in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, yesterday in her presidential address at the opening ceremony of the National Executive Council meeting of the union . She added, “I, therefore, call on the president of Nigeria Labour Congress to mobilise workers for industrial action if the government fails to announce and pay the minimum wage by October 1, 2010.”

Mrs Iliya said the impending strike action became necessary in view of the fact “that the legislatures and other political office holders that earn outrageous allowances have had substantial increases in their pay” The NASU president lamented that the absence of public power has further pauperised the lowly paid workers, who now spend huge sum on fuel to power their generating sets.

Mrs Iliya, while decrying what she called all sorts of illegal and outrageous taxations on workers salary in some states of the federation , called on the NLC to get the Federal Government to intervene and put a permanent stop to illegal deductions from workers salaries by states governments” to avert possible spontaneous reaction of the exploited workers.”

She further hinted that the ongoing industrial action by workers of Research institutes in the country would continue until the 53.37 per cent salary increase, 65 years retirement age and other concessions that their counterparts enjoyed were given to them. She reiterated NASU’s opposition to any attempt by the Federal Government to deregulate the down stream sector of the oil industry.

While congratulating the INEC Chairman, Professor Attaihru Jega, over his appointment, Mrs Iliya reminded him that the Nigerian people and world at large expected nothing but free and fair conduct of elections in which peoples vote would count.

She condemned the rate of violent crime, resulting in extra judicial killings, assassinations and commercial hostage takings, attributing the insecurity of lives and property in the country to the failure of government in providing employment opportunity for the teeming youths.
Declaring the meeting open, Governor Bukola Saraki of Kwara State recommended dialogue as means of resolving union issues in order to avoid industrial unrest.

Saraki, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Welfare, Mrs. Ikeoluwa Orunmuyi said his state was enjoying industrial harmony because of the cordial relationship that existed between the government and leaders of the trade unions. He urged other states so the federation to emulate the good example of Kwara State.
Politics › Saraki Replies Akingbola Over Alleged N8.5billion Debt. by HighChief4(op): 11:43pm On Sep 23, 2010
One of the Presidential aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Kwara State Governor, Dr Bukola Saraki has denied the allegation that he is owing the sum of N7bn being outstanding debt of three companies allegedly linked to him in the petition the former Executive Vice Chairman of Intercontinental Bank, Chief Erastus Akingbola sent to the Minister for Justice, Mohammed Adoke (SAN).

In a statement by Fatigun Akintoba, Special Adviser (Communication and (Strategy) to Governor Saraki, he described the claim as frivolous, mischievous and a calculated attempt to mislead the unsuspecting public and drag his name into the mud.
He said that the allegation that Dr Saraki owned three companies Limkers Nigeria Limited, Skyview Properties and Joy Petroleum, which all enjoyed the controversial waivers from Intercontinental Bank Plc as unfounded

According to the statement, “To put the record straight, it is no longer news that Dr Saraki had resigned his appointment as a Director in all companies that he has had interests, including the two in the petition, Limkers Nigeria Limited and Skyview Properties Limited just as he is not involved in the day-to-day operations of the two companies as portrayed by Akingbola.
Neither the governor nor any member of his family was at any time whatsoever a shareholder or director of Joy Petroleum Limited.
As regards the other two companies, the governor wish to state that Limkers Nig. Ltd., which was alleged to be owing the sum of N1.89bn, has paid N1.7bn, which accounts for over 90% of the loan.

Therefore, the issue of waiver does not arise. Regarding Skyview Properties, the purported loan as a Margin facility, which gave the total control of the management of the said shares, for which the loan was secured to the bank.
In addition to the value of the shares, the company went ahead to pay N343 million.
This should be noted, as in similar situations, other customers have insisted that their exposures are only covered to the extent of the values of the shares in the books of the banks.
On the issue of Lai Alabi, he said he is not an ex-staff of Governor Saraki as claimed by Akingbola.

This is not the first bank in which Alabi has been saddled with such responsibility by CBN. He had done it at Spring Bank and Wema Bank before the emergence of Lamido Sanusi.î The Special Adviser to Governor Saraki said. According to the aide of the governor, ìIt should also be noted that Alabiís involvement in Shonga Holdings Limited as a non-executive chairman was a service to his home State based purely on merit. Shonga Holdings does not belong to Governor Saraki but a registered corporate
entity owned by the new Nigerian farmers and four major banks as shareholders; and it is the holding company for commercial farming enterprise.

However, the statement said, that it is unfortunate that the issues raised in the petition were laced with political mischief and a
calculated ploy to heat up the polity and distract the public attention from Akingbolaís ineptitude and inadequacies.
Sarakiís aide also said on the issue of the merger between SGBN and Intercontinental Bank, contrary to Akingbolaís claim in the petition, the failure of the merger did not affect the relationship between Akingbola and Governor Saraki, because after the merger
deadlock, Akingbola came to seek the favour of Governor Saraki on the survival of Intercontinental Bank. The statement further said, ìFirst he did a letter to Governor Saraki to intervene on his behalf from the late President Umaru Musa YaríAdua to give Intercontinental Bank more time to build their capital. It was after the merger that he also came to ask Governor Saraki to plead with the then Hon. Minister for transport, Alhaji Bio Ibrahim to get lucrative account of the ministry of transport and its parastatals
like Nigerian Port Authority (NPA), Nigerian Maritime Safety Agency (NMSA), Nigeria Shippers Council, Nigeria Railway Corporation and National Inland Water Ways.

Governor Saraki has no single Share in Intercontinental Bank; therefore, the issue of his running the bank by proxy does not arise. Also the claim that Gov. Saraki was instrumental to the appointment of Lamido as CBN governor, who in turn choose Lai Alabi to replace Akingbola as MD of Intercontinental Bank is baseless and unfounded. Gov. Saraki therefore charge Akingbola to face and address the problems at hand rather than shifting blames and giving political colouration after he had been found wanting of breaching the public trust,î the governorís aide said in the statement.
