I currently work as a Data Analyst. I was meant to know that I have to work closely with the Business intelligence officer in the organization after I got the job. Aside the fact that I do the normal daily and weekly analysis of the organization data, this Business intelligence officer always gives me a research work to do (and tells me it's part of the job of a data analyst) . Meanwhile, there is nothing analysis about the research work.

NB: JOB DESCRIPTION was not given before getting the job.
I told the HR, he said I need to assist her with her research when the need arise. But I noticed she always gives research work that is too much (I don't even like it) and makes it look as though my normal analysis is not much of a work for anyone (infact she believes I don't do anything at all). I personally like doing my data analysis job fast, automated and efficient so I could have time to involve myself with online courses I have Registered since I barely have time for them at home. And this online courses are there to make me better at what I do. One time she saw me going through a course she spoke in her native language thinking I didn't understand. She said "this guy no get work".

This is really making me have a thought of quitting this job especially when my line manager clearly told me that I am not helping her at all. This Business Intelligence officer is very rude to start with. I feel she is doing all this to frustrate me and possibly take my position as both the Business intelligence officer and data analyst.

House, if you are in my shoes, what will you do. I need honest answers. Thanks.

Same situation here although it isnt my boss complaining, but colleagues who think I came to take over part of their jobs.

Age is also a factor as no one fancies a younger person sitting in the office while they are out in the field giving them instructions. so they make my work difficult.
Also beware of imposter syndrome and fear of being sacked...everyday i feel my job is too easy as i quickly round up my tasks before noon aside adhoc requests. I keep myself busy by upskilling and improving my portfolio. Don't make the mistake of being too comfortable with where you are.

My advise, put on a show, make them see that your job is actually difficult, don't be naive to impress them by working fast all the time. Probably why they push extra tasks to you.

You cant avoid the research work she gives you, I would even be happy to take on it because it is another skill to put on your resume.

Always see the positive side okay..

You are already upskilling so that is all.

I work remotely for a tech company in US. They've never forgotten to pay my salary on 15th and 30th of every month and when we have a zoom meeting, they treat me like everyone else. Respectful and considerate. There were times when my internet will mess up my zoom meetings, they don't get upset or shout. Infact they joke about my internet being the slowest in the room all the time. It's been fun in the last year and half. Plus I get promoted too. I didn't expect that since I'm a remote staff.

You're speaking facts bro. Most data related jobs require an MSC or better to get. I've seen people start learning web development or software development and land a great job within 6 months but data professional jobs require a whole lot more.

I feel like I'm in too deep to quit lol but if I'm to start all over again i probably would go the web development or software development route.

The only upside for data professionals is that once you get a foot in you can relax and keep doing what you know, web devs and software devs would need to keep learning the latest and greatest tools plus the bar to get in is low so the competition is very high.

I go like join this your circle oh lol. I'm think of creating a network of ambitious Machine learning, Data engineering and data science enthusiasts.

I gave my CV in May '21 after some days I was called for an interview via zoom. I did the interview, with the DG in charge. I performed well according to my standards, and the other woman on the team was clearly impressed. They said they would get back to me, so I waited. 1 week o, 2 weeks o, naso I just give up. Months passed, I faced my front, asper that one don go. Around December I was searching for the DG's number on my phone(he called me with his personal line), I didn't see it again. 2021 ended, I was still on my small golf hustle, planning how my new year go be. In fact I had bought new golf clubs (sticks) to up my game this year. Wednesday February 16, I finished playing with an army major, then I checked my phone; there was an SMS Inviting me for documentation and IPPIS capturing in Abuja 9 am the next day. (this was around 2pm) I put myself together and left for Abuja. The next day I was presented with APL and did documentation, IPPIS and pension stuff. This was 18-19 February. They discharged us, and said we will hear from them soon, congratulations. I am back in Js now, I have not been called yet, neither has any of those we were captured together. Sha I have been in communication with a woman I the DG office. (the one who sent me the SMS) she said there is no new development, but 'very soon'

Let me share how I understood it in lay man terms

WHILE x is lower than a certain value or condition, do something to x or any other operation.

FOR each item in a list or dictionary, do an operation

I moved from to a less expensive city in the middle belt to stay with a relative who is accommodating.. Very very important.

I set goals for myself with that relative peace of mind to improve on my skill set. That alone occupied my mind.

An idle mind is an opportunity for depression to creep in.

Bro don't return there. Believe you me if they really wanted you they will give you a better position and bigger pay. Stay where you are now and also use the extra time to look for a new job.
They have a replacement already if you say no that's why they don't wanna increase the pay, all they want is for you to use your previous experience from the former management.

He should just stay with the current job since he is having less expense he can save enough and come up with a start up later alongside the job so even if they end up disposing him he has something to fall back to and getting a job is by what you can input into a company not by where you have worked before so he can work on acquiring a skill too.

I worked for a multi national organisation last year for a few months before internal strife and change of management made me lose my job as collateral damage. I was jobless for months and those were trying times for my mental health.

I got a job two months ago. It had less stress and the expenses are less. I can save more but there is no job security, no offer letter and no career growth.

Now the new owners of my previous organisation want me back but with slightly lesser pay than what I received back when I was in their employ, a contract letter and promise of job security. There is also no chance of career progression within the organisation but I will improve my skills to potentially get a better job from there.

I'm conflicted.. I don't want to leave my comfort zone in the current job to move to another city for a job that relieved me in the past. There is a chance they can do it again if they feel like based on the nationality of the owners but I also feel like I have an opportunity to develop myself and move to better places from there because of the reputation of the company name on my CV.

Please who has had such experience like this and advice going forward.

PS. I negotiated with the new owners on improving the pay package and they made no concrete promises.. I'm waiting for the offer letter to see if it'd at least match my former pay.

This is heartbreaking because on such permanent secretary keeps telling me that there is an embargo on employment so his hands are tied.

That alone made not to disturb him so much.

I guess people really want to help only those whom they want to.

But not to relent, even if we dont see FG job, a good private one will show up. To all job seekers out there.. Keep the faith

Yeah, Microsoft DA-100 and maybe an excel certification should be enough for starters . I have an MCSA and excel certification with over 8 online course certification from udemy

Im still an entry level data analyst so I don't know it all, just practice practice if possible everyday if possible.
Then pick up a certification, that will boost up your chances. Then start applying like mad. Got over 50 rejection till one clicked . Watch a lot of YouTube interview training also cos it seems their interview questions and answers formats is quite different from 9ja .

I guess its only certification I don't have.

I am already quite proficient, probably I don't have enough exposure online to be seen by recruiters.

So much that I began my journey in software development (from the very grassroot of HTML) in the hope that if landing a job as a data analyst for a foreign job is very difficult...who knows maybe in a a year, I will be able to compete for roles in software dev.

Dbt is a great ETL tool. One of the best for the pricing it offers.
Looker on the other hand is also a great tool but it doesnt fascinate me personally.
Dbt is also gaining popularity and so many coys are using it as we speak.
