Are you saying aspiring accountants are greedy?

If there's a high failure rate, it's not surprising. Exam failure is a hallmark of Nigeria's education these days. Nobody reads, people just register for exams and expect the questions to leak or something. Too bad.
I tire o, they should just collect exam fees and pass everyone

They do - through SPVs. These show up on their books as Investments and investment income or similar.
They don't either through SPV's or any other vehicle.  Well run banks don't go out buying businesses outright or telecom licenses with the intention of hiring managers for such businesses.  I am not referring to the merchant banking operations of bank's where they may co-invest with other firms in companies.  That is not the same as buying a telecom license and hiring people to manage it.

reading some individuals comment on Nairaland makes me cringe. Shows how uninformed some are.

Before you post or insult please always use google to search for information or better still try things out yourself.

1. Before he won the bid, he would have a proof of agreement with banks to lend money

2. It was after the contract came that they stalled investing the funds (they did lot of meetings and the bank reneged on their promise; contract; agreeement)

3. No millionaire sponsors project with their money. They use banks. Thats the essence of banks

4. Nigerian banks are myopic in their lending structure. In the UK, you can get a £25,000 loan spread over 5 years. In Nigeria, no bank will lend you 1 million over a 2 year period.

If you doubt me, take your small business proposal (an already existing biz o) to the bank where you have some money. Ask them for a 1 million Naira loan and see if they'll give it to you.

The bank should have just asked the Government to GUARANTEE the loan, if they are scared that babalakin will not pay back.

That is what the UK govt did recently, (i understand that we are two different nations, but i mean, banking is same everywhere, isnt it?)

Now, can anyone tell me how we can have more jobs, when we are allowing foreign institutions to invest in our country because local banks cannot get their "sogundogoji" (turn 20 to 40 instantly) returns within 1 year.
The govt should guarantee the loan to a private company? Which private loan did the UK govt guarantee?

Perhaps you want to go over what I wrote again. - The bank will own the license, but get an operator to run it. "The licenses cost $285m which they could have easily raised, it would then simply be a case of bringing in a competent operator/investor to run the business. ".

Banks in most of developed world own a good chunk of the businesses/industries in those economies, albeit indirectly. Which is why they are such behemoths and are able to declare such huge turnovers and profits, because they are directly partaking in the success of virtually all the businesses within and even outside their domain!
If they own the license and get an operator to run it, the bank still effectively owns the telecom business.  The bank has to consolidate the telecom's financials with its own, all the bank is doing is paying someone to manage it.  It's a different thing if the bank finances the license for someone else.  Once the name on the telecom license says Bank A, then Bank A own the telecom business.

Banks in most developed countries lend to businesses/industries, they don't own them (except of course the borrower defaults), which is what  would happen if a bank directly owns the operating telecom license. I am yet to find a bank in developed country that operates this model.

Nigerian banks are appallingly disgusting! They never ever have the foresight to see an opportunity and grab it by the horns. It's not about Babalakin being a bad debtor, it's about our banks stubbornly refusing to finance any project that will not make them 20-30% returns a year! - Which is an impossible return on long term projects.

Our 4 biggest banks (First Bank, UBA, Zenith, GTB) range in age from at least 20 yrs to over 100 yrs, yet the combined turnover of these 4 banks at N762 billion is almost the same as 10 yrs old MTN Nigeria's at N749 billion!! How blind are these banks? Couldn't any one of them have seen the huge potential waiting to be tapped in the telecoms industry in Nigeria and set up a telecoms company and bid for one of the licenses in 2001? The licenses cost $285m which they could have easily raised, it would then simply be a case of bringing in a competent operator/investor to run the business.

South African banks are taking over most of the major long term financing in Nigeria. Dangote liquidated all his loans with Nigerian banks and moved the entire facility to South African banks at better rates and longer tenors. Believe you me, the South African banks would give Babalakin the money he is looking for, and they would be smiling back to South Africa every year with their repatriated interest income that could have easily stayed within the banking system/economy in Nigeria, but for the mindboggling greed of our banks!
Are banks in the business of running telecom companies? Which well run bank have you come across anywhere in the world that operates a telecom company? The financing part I subcribe too, but the buying of a license is a definite NO. Nigerian banks actually financed the purchase of GSM license and subsequent network roll out in 2001.
CareerRe: Giving Up Banking For London South Bank University by hispy99(m): 6:04pm On Jul 11, 2011
@Poster

The university you go to matters. The better the school you go to, the better your chances of being hired.  That's just the way it is.  I went to a top 20 school in the US and the difference between my school and Harvard, Stanford, Wharton etc is light and day when it comes to employment.  Did I get a job? YES.  Was it easy? NO.  Would it have been easier if I had gone to those top school? YES.  The better schools have the better alumni network (trust me, searching for work is all about who you know, even in the U.S) and more importantly, the best companies go there to recruit. They also have a lot more companies coming to recruit there than your average joe school.  So while I was busy chasing companies up and down the whole of U.S, my Harvard peers were having recruitment cocktails and dinners with companies in their school.

The way I look at is this.  Getting a job is like running a 10,000 meter race.  If you go to the top schools, you get to start at the 5,000 meter mark; while going to the worst school means you start at ZERO.  The guys at Oxford is already 5,000 meters ahead of you.  Of course, you can catch and over take him if you are Haile Gebreselassi, but I would rather start at 5,000 if I can.

So you need to weigh what you want to do after you are done with your MSc carefully before you make a choice.

Good luck

I'm in a quagmire as regards my career at the moment. I have recently gotten admission to a school in Scotland to do my MSC in a very promising field in ICT and just yesterday got a Job Offer from one of the foremost insurance firms in the country(In their IT department). Quickly pounced on the offer cos i have been out of sorts in my current place and the benefits are very good though the pay could be better. Kinda confused on whether to just defer the admission indefinitely till further notice or plunge into the deep and head out for the MSC. huh. What do you think guys?
Defer your admission for 1 year and take the job.  If you don't like it then you can leave after 1 year.  If you do like it, figure out how long you can defer your admission for and if your firm grants study leave after a number of years.  You just might be able to defer your admission long enough for you to enjoy the best of both worlds (attend the school while on study leave)

And on the other hand there are stories about her salary demands and currency it should be paid in. . .

maclatunji:
I was in the plane from Calabar to Lagos. About 2/3rd of the journey, I started feeling pressure on my ears. Gradually, my hearing dropped and as the pressure increased so did the pain. I looked around and saw that everybody was quite normal except me. The couple beside me were chatting away without problems (at this point, I could not hear what they were saying). The lady seemed to identify my condition, saying it was cabin pressure. I was in serious pain for about the next twenty minutes (holding my head like superman suffering from kryptonite) until the plane landed in Lagos. Funny, I have not done more research on that predicament to see if there is anything I can do to prevent a re-ocurrence. Prior to that I was on a flight from Lagos to Calabar and everything went fine.
I have the same issue too. I use air plugs and they work all the time. I put them on before the flight takes off, take them out into the flight and put them back on before the pilot begins the descent, which is usually like 30-40 minutes before the plane lands. Also try, popping out your ears by holding your nose and "popping" your ears, this works to relieve the pressure if it has already built up.

@Maitema,

I feel your pains reading posts like this online. But what do they do when they are in a society that does not listen. Management does not want to listen. They feel whatever they are doing is best and best for the company. They are so concern about their own selfish interest and not interest of other members of staff.

And Mind you, THAT ALLOWANCE they call PROFIT SHARING IS PART OF their SALARY. Its only TAGGED profit sharing ITS A FRACTION OF their ANNUAL PAY, it their entitlement and their right.

So Maitema, please you could just keep your trap closed before dirt comes out of it.
How can profit share be your entitlement and right? There's a reason it's called profit share (a) It is paid when the bank makes profit (b) the full amount is not guaranteed. I have worked in previous banks that had profit share as part of salary and I understood it was not an entitlement or right. So what happens if the bank declares a loss? Where are they supposed to get the "profit" to share in this case, or they should pay you from depositors' funds just because it is your right and entitlement?

Hello Nairalanders to all those who have being looking for a way to invest in a private placement, a very cheap offer is out and it is in an industry which the  Federal government policy is promoting i.e local beverage industry, juice industry to be precise, and this is where FUMMAN AGRICULTURAL PRODUCT falls into, straight to the point it is @ N1.50/share and the min quantity is 10,000 units and this translates to N15,000 at  this price you can't possibly loose, when it is listed on the NSE in 6months time it can never be less than N4 if not more than that since by then the market would have bounced back and just think of the % of the capital appreciation on every N1.50 u would have more than double your investment, remember that it is wise to invest when it is cheapest to do so not when the stock becomes scarce and very expensive.

Your can find attached to this post the PROSPECTUS of FUMMAN AGRIC, this would help you make up your mind about the company.

Now for those who are wandering what is happening in the stock market well the question I always ask myself is when do traders prefer to buy goods meant for resale? And the answer is when cost of goods are at the lowest, I then wonder why people panic over the continuous reduction in prices of stock, this is not to undermine the fact that some people bought when it was high and now they believe they are at a loss but the solution is not far fetch the advice I'll give such people is to buy those same stock allover again now that the prices are at an all time low, this is called averaging your loss.

This is it works once those stocks rise slightly the perceived losses are reduced by the profit in the new class you bought at a low price thus averaging your loss or should we say evening out.
How do you know the price will not be less than N4 in the next 6 months, or that the market will have rebounded by then?  There's no way in this world you know for sure that the price will be at least N4 in 6 months, so please stop saying what you don't know. I understand that you need to market your PP, but it is rhetoric like this that got us in the current predicament.

Er, how will reducing the number of shares outstanding improve a company's fundamentals?? There's some advantage in administration, but share reconstruction (which is a fancy name for some simple arithmetic) isn't anything but that: share reconstruction; you may reconstruct the shares, but that's much less to say about the company itself.

And, the absolute value of the dividend isn't the important parameter; take a look at dividend yield, and other metrics as P/E, EPS and PEG.
.
very well said. Share reconstruction does not change nada about a company's fundamentals

just as companies recognize the worth of ACCA in jand, so do companies recognize the worth of ICAN in naija. There are countless number of people that work in naija after passing various levels of ICAN.

Companies also pay for ICAN exams in naija just like in the U.S and it DEPENDS on the industry and your job functions. Companies will generally pay if the professional qualification will help in carrying out your duties

Even the Banks, Hedge Funds, and Huge Financial Institutions have the below statement on their websites or Limited Power Of Attorney Forms they give to their clients regardless of the billions been made on a monthly basis by the HUGE Players,

***customers should be aware of the risks associated with over-the-counter, spot Forex. In the off-exchange, also called the over-the-counter market, a retail customer trades directly with a counterparty and there is no exchange or central clearing house to support the transaction.Forex trading is highly speculative in nature which can mean currency prices may become extremely volatile. Forex trading is highly leveraged, since low margin deposits normally are required, an extremely high degree of leverage is obtainable in foreign exchange trading. A relatively small market movement will have a proportionately larger impact on the funds you have deposited. You may sustain a total loss of your funds. Since the possibility of losing your entire cash balance does exist, speculation in the Forex market should only be conducted with risk capital you can afford to lose which will not dramatically impact your lifestyle. ****

Hi Mr. Abujabooks,

As you requested, my name is Solum Chibuikem Ojay, i work at Lilian Esiri & Co (Legal Practitioners), Lagos Island, Lagos State. We have handled transactions like the merger of Springbank Plc, Merger of Fidelity Bank Plc, Merger of IBTC Chartered bank plc. other capital market transactions may not be disclosed now until we have come close enough. My deap passion and zeal to be most updated in Capital market deals and Investments is a personal business. It doesn't involve my firm in the sense that you have no business calling my firm saying you want to talk with my MD or anyone else. If you are really down for us to do business together and getting the latest info in the Capital Market as a whole, you come to me directly. If you want to meet me we can always meet at my office and that is when you are ready to meet with me. I have have deal deals with big boys in the past and all of them are all bigger boys now. I can't give you my office no. just to play safe. My Cell phone no. is 08062155921. if you are really in for a deal we can always meet at my office after giving me a call and you would see for your own self. The Starcomms placement is the latest for now until we meet. Stocks have changed many life as well as mine too. It may be your time.
You can't give us your office number or address, but you are willing to splash your mobile number all over the internet? Thankfully, I like the level I am now right now; don't need this PP to be a bigger boy.
