For those that don't know, Abuja and Enugu have the same ambience ☺... Just that Abuja is more infrastructurally developed.

Abuja just like Lagos benefits from federal government infrastructure. Something that no eastern city has ever tasted throughout Nigerian history. Imagine what Enugu will be like if it had many roads built by federal government.

Yes but unfortunately it’s private. You need membership to gain access.

Middle class areas

One thing I would like to see all cities in Alaigbo to do in the future is to set out hectares of land that will never be developed. It would be used to build parks and public squares where people can gather in the evenings after work or on the weekends.

Politics / Re: My Solution For Ebonyi State Airport by horsepower102: 7:38pm On Oct 21, 2023
SoNature:

This is FALSE because the aviation industry isn't subsidized like advanced countries, making air travels very costly. Before you build an airport, you carry out a feasibility study of the project. Check out what planes charge in Nigeria and assess the income of the people who live in the state. People who you target in Cross River and Cameroon are the poorest. The richest amongst a people often live in the capital cities.

Given the GDP and IGR of that new state, Dave Umahi shouldn't have built that airport. It was totally unnecessary. He should have invested that money in building factories that process agric produce that Ebonyi State has competitive advantage of. Better still, use that money to empower all those Ebonyi hustlers and change their lives forever. They will come back and transform their state. He can even make it an interest-free loan payable in 10 years.

The truth is that you are asking private investors to come and put in their money there, but nobody invests where there's no guaranteed ROI. According to official records, there are just few viable airports in Nigeria. So, I don't understand the obsession with building airports all over the place. One major problem we have in Nigeria is that our politicians don't run states like business enterprises. They throw money around because it's available and it's not theirs. They don't consider the returns they'll make after investing in projects.

Give private sector attractive incentives and see if they won’t find a way to make the airport viable. Government has to de-risk the investment to attract private investment.

Multiple companies can form a consortium so the risk is spread.

Eventually Ebonyi will need airport. The problem right now it that it was not ready for it.

Easier said than done. Ebonyi simply need to key ik into areas where they have comparative advantage. Which is agriculture.

That airport was a ddicck measuring contest went wrong.. Nobody wise business man will take these advice from you because the airport is simply not viable.

Agreed that the airport is currently not viable but the points I raised can help to make it viable. If you give business people proper incentives by reducing the risk of the investment, they will come on board.

I will say an unpopular opinion amongst Nigerians but if you take time to think about it, you will realize that it’s true.

All 36 states in Nigeria can have their own airport and they all can be viable and profitable if planned well. Not all airports have to be for passengers. Some can be for cargo and light aircraft’s.

The Ebonyi Airport if planned well can service people living in Ebonyi, northern parts of cross river and Abia state because it’s closer to them than any other airports around.

If all goes well, people from Cameroon may land there and drive across the border because it’s closer to them than their main national airport.

Ebonyi state has one of the biggest untapped potential in Nigeria. It is unacceptable to allow an airport project go to waste and turn into a series of white elephant projects.

The following are my proposals to the government of Ebonyi state to act on immediately and with a sense of urgency.

1) Privatize the airport completely or workout a public private partnership agreement on a 30 years lease to a private company to take over and further develop the airport.

2) Give lucrative incentives to the private entity that takes over the airport. For example, given them a 10 year tax holiday and slowly increase taxes afterwards.

3) Build an industrial and manufacturing zone close to the airport. Starting with Agro-Allied industries.

4) Convert the airport into an integrated airport city and make it a free trade zone. It will be a one stop shop for business.

5) With the free trade zone status, the airport becomes the biggest cargo airport for evacuation of produce from Ebony state.

6) Invite people from the diaspora to set up their business in the zone. There are so many people in the diaspora that will like to process agricultural products in Nigeria and ship it to where they live at.

7) invite various retail establishments to set up branches inside the airport. Give them good economic incentive.

8 ) lnvite the hospitality sector to build nice hotels around the airport. Give them nice incentives.

9) Build up the tourism potential of Ebonyi state and use the airport as an arrival destination for tourists all over the world. Ebonyi state is perfect for Eco tourism.

Meanwhile, does Nigeria have the capacity to purchase 60,000 brand new vehicles annually? Innoson should start looking at the markets in West and Central Africa. Even if it means opening plants in any country their government is willing to provide support. Gabon or Equitorial Guinea will make sense for logistics reasons.

Innoson will export whatever he doesn’t sell besides most of his production is based on orders placed directly to him.

Some of them suffer from self hate. They will go to undeveloped places with bad security and start businesses but the moment you ask them to invest some of their profit in the East, they tell you that government must put 24 hours electricity first, all the roads must be perfect and dualized, security must be perfect.
The same people making all these demands are dealing with daily harassment from touts and religious fanatics.

Car Talk / Innoson Acquires Robot Equipment, Increases Production Capacity To 60,000 by horsepower102: 10:40am On Oct 21, 2023
LEADING Nigerian automobile manufacturer, Innoson Vehicles Manufacturing, IVM, has acquired robot painting equipment to increase productivity and improve the quality of its vehicles.

Chief executive officer of the company, Chief Innocent Chukwuma, who stated this on Tuesday, also said Innoson has increased its annual factory capacity from 10,000 vehicles to 60,000, an increase of about 500 per cent.

Chukwuma who spoke in Nnewi, Anambra State, at the auto company’s 13th anniversary and presentation of ISO 9001:2015 by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, SON, said the company had upgraded its factory production from manual to semi-automation and standard automation.

According to him, the 500 per cent increase in vehicle production was made possible through the company’s upgrade from manual to semi-automation. He said: “In our pursuit of perfection, we have upgraded our factory from manual production to semi-automation and then to standard automation, which has seen our production capacity rise from 10,000 vehicles to 60,000 vehicles per year. As we mark this milestone in our journey of creating quality Nigerian-made vehicles, we are honoured to have you all join us for this momentous occasion.

“We have come a long way since our humble beginning in October 2010. Our vision was simple: to provide reliable, durable, and affordable vehicles for Nigerians. And we have stayed true to that vision with our commitment to excellence, innovation, and customer satisfaction. I am overjoyed to announce that today we will be receiving the ISO 9001-2015 Quality Management Certificate as well as the MANCAP Certificate from the Standards Organisation of Nigeria. This is a testament to our dedication to upholding international standards of quality and excellence in all aspects of our operations.”

Director-General of SON, Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, while presenting the ISO 9001:2015 and MANCAP certificates to the auto company, said the Innoson brand of vehicles had met all international standards and were, therefore, fit to be used in Nigeria and beyond.

Okeke, who was represented by a SON director, Engr. Fred Akingbesote, said: “Awarding the certificates to Innoson Vehicles shows that the company went through a rigorous process of inspections and quality assurance in the last five years or even more and also demonstrated compliance with the relevant product standards and is providing products that meet consumer expectations and offer value for money, among other benefits.

“With the award of MANCAP’s certificate to the Innoson brand of vehicles, we are demonstrating how standardization and conformity to standards offer strategic opportunities for increased efficiency, set benchmarks, and help promote made-in-Nigeria products to the international market, as this award will boost Innoson’s brand across borders. We are in effect saying that the Innoson brand is fit to be used in Nigeria and beyond.”

Politics / Re: Aba Is The First City In Nigeria To Have A Mayor In Modern Times by horsepower102: 6:43pm On Oct 19, 2023
Gajagojo:

No it is not globally recognised
It must have a constitutional basis
You are making a baseless assumption

There are executive mayors and ceremonial mayors

In the first republic in Nigeria mayor was the same thing as Local government chairman who was elected as a councillor and chosen as chairman by other councillors

In London there is a directly elected mayor with executive powers so it is not the same around the world
That is false

There is nothing like that in the Nigerian constitution
So it can only be ceremonial or a glorified commissioner

I think some of you are more interested in disagreeing with me than understanding the core of my points. I think you are being disingenuous when you say a Mayoral position is not globally recognized.
Yes definitely various developed or even developing countries may call it different things.
Yes some mayoral position may be ceremonial.

But at core most mayors are ELECTED or APPOINTED to run a city.

What's the logical difference between the functions of a mayor and lG chairman? I know certain cities in the US have mayor and city managers. Go ahead and expand your thoughts so the audience better understands you.

Ps: Here's a chart that shows thr organizational structure of a city in Texas.

In the case of America in comparison to Nigeria

Think of local governments chairpersons as head of counties while Mayors as head of cities.

A county may have multiple cities in it but each of those cities have their own mayors running the affairs.

In the case of Nigeria, without disrupting the current system, the mayor will be under the LGA but their main focus is to manage the daily affairs of the city and make sure things are done properly.

What is the definition of Mayor in Nigeria and how does that contrast to other places?

Mayor is a globally recognized position but in general they typically run the cities including waste management, drainage, pot holes, building codes and permits, traffic violations, parks and recreation etc.

They make cities work and function well. It’s only in Nigeria that we have state government doing everything.

I agree but I think what he intends to do is to use tax revenue from Aba to fund the position.

I don’t know if you have heard but Otti has reformed the tax collection in Abia state. Everything in now digital. That has already increased revenue tremendously.

Since what Alex Otti did is not known to law in Abia state, how will the so call mayor function?

I'm trying to let you know where it may lead to in future if Alex Otti fails to garner 25% votes in Aba

A Governor in Nigeria has the constitutional power to create any agency or ministry that they deem necessary. Although if he is voted out, the Mayoral position can be dissolved by the new administration.

It’s up to Alex Otti to convince the law makers to make the position constitutional.

It can be done but Alex Otti needs to do the work of making it permanent.

It's commendable.
Does It mean in 2027, if Alex Otti fails to get 25% in the capital city but have the highest number of vote cast in the election, there will be a rerun??
Does the ABA mayor have any constitutional backing?

Currently it’s an appointed position but Abia state can modify their state constitution to accommodate a Mayoral position as an elected office. Then they can structure the revenue sharing formula so that the Mayor can have the resources to administer the city.

As for your initial question, I have no idea how it relates to the topic.

For years those us that have been discussing development of south east and Nigeria as a whole have been stressing the need for major cities to have their own Mayor who will focus on development of those cities since the state government cannot do it all.

Some people asked what about local governments chairmen? Can’t local government do it?

The answer is No because local government are not equipped with the technicalities of running and managing a city.

If it was a rural area, local government can do that but once those areas turn to cities, you need a Mayor.
