Nigerian drummer nurtures children to preserve use of local instruments

Nigerian artist Adebayo Ayodeji is targeting children to play traditional instruments like drums, which he worries could become extinct and erase an important aspect of the culture in Africa's most populous country.

In the megacity of Lagos, parents bring children to his twice-a-month drumming workshops to learn how to play drums and understand their traditional significance.

In Nigeria, the drum is not only a musical instrument, but is also used in ceremonial events and rituals like communicating with deities and summoning meetings in villages.

"We are using this to revive our cultural values," Ayodeji said, noting that most children had not seen the drums before.

"They've not played it before and this is an opportunity to introduce them to it, so we are using it to at least do a kind of evangelism – evangelism of art," Ayodeji said.

The EFCC should go after some outgoing governors and other public officials now, without waiting after May 29. The war on corruption should be the top priority in Nigeria. INEC-chairman-must-go protesters defy afternoon rains, storm Appeal Court

Hundreds of aggrieved citizens under the aegis of the ‘Free Nigeria Movement’ defied the afternoon rains in Abuja and staged a protest march to the Court of Appeal to register their displeasure over what they described as monumental fraud in the just-concluded 2023 elections.

Wielding several placards, the protesters called on Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, to prevail on President Muhammadu Buhari to cancel the 2023 polls, relieve Yakubu of his duties and replace him with a credible and competent person who would conduct fresh elections.

They also want the President to set in motion plans for the formation of an interim national government in case the judiciary is unable to conclude the presidential election petitions before May 29.

Among the inscriptions on the placards brandished by the protesters who converged at the Abuja Unity fountain were: “Buhari cancels sham elections”, “Nigeria not for sale”, “Yakubu Mahmood no integrity”, “Why can’t we just have free and fair elections?” amongst others.

Speaking to journalists during the operation to arrest the pastor, he said that the main suspect has been claiming that there are

kingdom of heaven. Kenyan Police on Wednesday evening arrested a controversial Kilifi based televangelist in connection with
the death of two children at Shakahola village.

Pastor Paul Mackenzie of the Good News International church is in police custody after a Malindi Court ordered the exhumation of the minor’s bodies. Also listed as suspects in the children's death are their parents Mr Isaac Ngala and Ms Emily Kaunga.

According to Kenya’s Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the children are believed to have been starved and later suffocated to death by their mother with the intention of becoming 'heroes before God after death'.

The mother is a worshipper in the pastor Mackenzie's church.

“According to the investigating officer Joseph Yator drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation in Malindi, police managed to rescue a third child. The rescued child narrated the sufferings his two siblings underwent after being starved for some time before their mother suffocated them to death,” the DPP said.

The three are suspected of burying the two minors on March 16 and 17, respectively, in a shallow grave at Shakahola village, Kilifi County.

“The government pathologist and officers from DCI Malindi will supervise the exhumation exercise, and the sub-county police commander and area OCS will provide security. Exhumed bodies will be examined, and DNA and toxicological samples taken,” the DPP said.

Malindi police boss John Kemboi confirmed the arrest of the pastor and said more details from preliminary investigations into the incident would be released today morning. The report will also detail how many more children could have succumbed due to negligence from their parents after the radicalization in the pastor’s church. Mr Francis Wanje claimed two of his grandchildren died after their parents received teachings from the pastor, who forced the children to fast until they died.

Their pastor told them that there are disasters that are coming soon and they should not be given food until they die. My grandchildren died in those weird circumstances and now we are happy detectives have arrested the pastor," said Mr Wanje. In 2017, Mr Mackenzie and his wife Joyce Mwikamba were charged with promoting radicalisation. They were also charged with failing to provide basic education to their three children.

(1) Any person who‐

(a) cruelly beats, kicks, ill‐treats, over‐rides, over ‐dri ves, over‐loads, tortures, infuriates, or terrifies any animal, or causes or procures, or being the owner, permits any animal to be so used; or

(b) by wantonly or unreasonably doing or omitting to do any act, or causing or procuring the commission or omission of any act, causes any unnecessary suffering, or being the owner, permits any unnecessary suffering to be caused to any animal; or

(c) conveys or carries, or being the owner, permits to be conveyed or carried any animal in such manner or position as to cause such animal unnecessary suffering; or

(d) wilfully without any reasonable cause or excuse administers, or causes or procures, or, being the owner, permits such administration of, any poisonous or injurious drug or substances to any animal, or wilfully without any reasonable cause or excuse causes any such substance to be taken by any animal; or

(e) subjects, or causes or procures, or, being the owner, permits, to be subjected, any animal to any operation which is performed without due care and humanity; or

(f) causes, or procures, or assists at the fighting or baiting of any animal, or keeps, uses, manages, or acts or assists in the management of any premises or place for the purpose, or partly for the purpose, of fighting or baiting any animal, or permits any place to be so kept, managed or used, or receives or causes or procures any person to receive money for the admission of any person to such premises or place,

is guilty of an offence of cruelty and is liable to imprisonment for six months or to a fine of fifty naira or to both such imprisonment and fine.

(2) For the purposes of this section, an owner shall be deemed to have committed cruelty within the meaning of this Chapter if he shall have failed to exercise reasonable care and supervision in respect of the protection of the animal therefrom:

Provided that, when an owner is convicted of permitting cruelty within the meaning of this Chapter by reason only of his having failed to exercise such care and supervision, he is not liable to imprisonment without the option of a fine.

(3) Nothing in this Chapter shall apply‐

(a) to the commission or omission of any act in the course of the destruction, or the preparation for destruction, of any animal as food for mankind, unless such destruction or such preparation was accompanied by the infliction of unnecessary suffering; or

(b) to the coursing or hunting of any captive animal, unless such animal is liberated in an injured, mutilated or exhausted condition; but a captive animal shall not, for the purpose of this section, be deemed to be coursed or hunted before it is liberated for the purpose of being coursed or hunted, or after it has been recaptured, or if it is under control.
