South Korea is a US ally. US allies need to trust that the US will do everything possible to protect them in the event of outward aggression.
One of the main reasons the US is flexing, is to give a nod to ALL its allies that it will defend them against all aggressors, even aggressors backed by China.

This is an especially important message to send since China has been bullying it's neighbors recently over uninhabited islands. The Phillipines, Vietnam, Japan, India, etc have all been bearing the brunt of Chinese diplomatic aggression over the past two years.
