Missy B:What are your questions? |
How do we know killing other humans is morally wrong? Supposing you wanted to derive a moral code based on the bible, which of the following you you consider morally good and why? Exodus 20: 13 Thou shall not kill Exodus 31: 15 For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day must be put to death. Numbers 15: 32 While the Israelites were in the desert, a man was found gathering wood on the Sabbath day. 33 Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron and the whole assembly, 34 and they kept him in custody, because it was not clear what should be done to him. 35 Then the LORD said to Moses, "The man must die. The whole assembly must stone him outside the camp." 36 So the assembly took him outside the camp and stoned him to death, as the LORD commanded Moses. Matthew 5 17"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven. |

A devout Christian has died during a fast after telling her family she wanted to emulate Christ's 40 days and nights in the wilderness. Just over 10 years ago, Rosaline Gilbert became a devout Christian and adopted regular fasting as a statement of her strong beliefs. But finally, with her body probably weakened by years of intermittent starvation sustained only by water and her Bible, Miss Gilbert, 34, died at her home in Hackney, east London, after going without food for 23 days. Although a post-mortem examination failed to establish the cause of death and further tests are being carried out, Miss Gilbert's family believe she had become dangerously frail from her extreme form of worship. Her sister Juliet Gilbert, 36, who lives in New York, said yesterday: "She started her latest fast on 19 March - just drinking water and reading the Bible. We think she maybe hadn't drunk enough water. She was starving herself and it must have been just too much for her body to take. "It is such a shock. She was the baby of our family. But she would have found some peace devoting herself to God. She was very religious and she used to say she was a child of God. She was not any particular Christian denomination but she was so strong in her beliefs." Her mother, Gloria Gilbert, 66, said yesterday: "She had been a Christian for a long time. She fasted frequently and would do it when the Lord told her to. Then she would start eating again." Miss Gilbert, the youngest of eight daughters, had started her fast the day after returning to her home town of Gloucester for the christening of a niece, the last time her family had seen her. She died on 12 April and was buried last Friday in Gloucester. Her coffin had images depicting Leonardo's Last Supper. An inquest has been opened into her death and adjourned until a date to be fixed pending toxicological tests. After moving to London, she trained as a carpenter but mainly worked in catering and lived alone. Religious experts said that, although fasting was common in many religions, cases of death were extremely rare. "It is a very rare and unusual case," said Dr Marat Shterin, a lecturer in the sociology of religion at King's College London. "Traditionally, religious fasting has a very flexible role in all religions, with considerable creativity involved in what and when one can and cannot eat. Although we do not know what other factors are involved, such as the woman's basic health, sometimes people can go over the top, particularly in some sectarian groups and cults. "While some African churches do not actually encourage strict dieting, the personal involvement of some of their members in religion can be very intense." Amanda Van-Eck, of Inform, the information service on new religious groups and movements, said there were no suggestions of any churches encouraging fasting in Britain. "While it is possible that some small group has put an undue emphasis on fasting, it is more likely this was her decision." Dr Asker Jeukendrup, a nutritionist at the University of Birmingham, said it was unlikely that 23 days of starvation would kill a normally healthy and average weight person, who would be able to stand 40 days of total fasting without serious ill-effects. But he pointed out that the longer someone goes without food the more the body becomes vulnerable to illness and infection. |
oloriooko:This is what Jesus said; Luke 6: 27But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, 28Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. Matthew 5 39But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. 41And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. 42Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. 43Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. 44But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; In view of the above verses from Jesus, is it the correct Christian behaviour to cast curses on your enemies? |
Is it right to curse someone who steals from you? |
Can one be a Christian without knowledge of the bible and Jesus? What does it take to be a TRUE Christian? What is true Christianity and amid the myriad of Christian denominations today (more than 30 000) which one of these represents true Christianity? Whenever someone leaves Christianity to some other belief system or to abandon beliefs altogether, the Christians usually claim that they were NOT TRUE Christians in the first place. They claim no true Christian will leave the religion. This fallacy is called the "No True Scotsman" fallacy. What is the hallmark of a true christian? Which of these are true Christians and which not. And by what criteria is that judgment made for if it is possible to say someone is not a true christian there must be a yardstick or frameworks against which they are measured; 1-) Pope 2-) Benny Hinn 3-) William Branham 4-) Oral Roberts 5-) Billy Graham 6-) Mother Teresa 7-) The G.O. 8-) Pastor Chris 9-) Pastor Matthew 10-) ArchBishop of Canterbury What would you make if any of the above names where to leave Christianity? Does that mean that they were never true Christians? There are hundreds of ex-Christian ministers, priests and pastors who have now left the religion to pursue more mentally elevating worldviews. Does this mean they were never true christians when they served in the christian ministry? How about a situation where someone wholehearted commits their entire life to "Christianity" but was unaware of just that one extra doctrine it takes to become a REAL flesh and blood christian. What are the psychological consequences of be so deluded? Who this person achieve eternal life? BTW, where in the Christian bible/code does it say a true Christian can NEVER leave the fold? |
tpia:What does it take to be a Christian? This is the sort of argumentation Christian use on anyone who leaves the religion. This fallacy is known in philosophy as "The no true Scotsman" fallacy. Check it out. How about all those who spend decades in Christianity, training as pastors and priest, evangelising worldwide and writing songs and tracks for the ministry and converting thousands along the way. How would you know any such person is a true Christian? |
Ok, must go now. Catch up again tomorrow guys. |
papa_dims:How can I be said to have free-will if god has already "decided" a path for me in life? |
rampant:Are my questions silly? ![]() So there cannot be anywhere that he is not, since he is everywhere! |
So let say in a Mosque. Is god there? If he is not there, can he be everywhere? |
How does god know which church to attend and which not to attend, given that he is everywhere. Can he be there in heart but not in spirit? |
One Christian says YES; rampant:Another says NO; Missy B:So who are we to believe? |
onyinye2:I was once a Christian, which has given me access to the christian mentality, doctrine and belief system. As don't know as much about these other religions as I do christianity. But that does not mean I have reverence for them. I have the same amount of opposition to them as christianity but cannot quote chapter&verse as I do with christianity. |
rampant:I thought he said, we should cast curses on them, but I can't remember the chapter&verse. Please, help me out! |
Is Satan capable of being everywhere as well? |
rampant:Nothing wrong with that too, as long as your repertoire is not limited by self-imposed prudishness. |
Prayers are considered by religious people to be god's way of communication with his people. In fact Jesus is thought to have given an exemplar of how a prayer should be made in the popular "Our Father, who art in Heaven . . ." prayer. He even goes further to say that WHATEVER is asked for in prayer WILL be granted. This is a truly extraordinary claim, that is being put to the test everyday by Christians worldwide. In the two millenia since Christianity, Christians have been praying for a solution to the problems of diseases, poverty, droughts, natural disasters, etc. Yet these are still with us today, killing thousands and causing untold millions every year. Is god asleep or has he heard these prayers but chosen to remain silence? Are these prayers non-effective? A recent trend I have noticed in some Christian talk is the issue of the casting of curses. Is this really supposed to be biblical? Does that bible give examples about how to cast curses? Who would a Christian want to cast a curse to? What did Jesus say about ones enemies? Should one cause a curse to be cast on one's enemies? Of these two - prayers and curse - which is more effective? |
italo:How about this for an answer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOKD6xzw8DY |
Some sexually repressed females around here, isn't there? What is the problem with being up-front and saying something like, "Hey, stud cum take this hot chick up the back side?" |
rampant:Like that idiom, but don't understand it. can you come again? |
rampant:Rampant, we had a good conversation last week, didn't we? That was not wasting me/your time. We exchange ideas much as we disagree on some main issues. BTW, you asked where I came from and upon being told I was born in Cameroon, you said "No Wonder" and dashed of home. What did you mean by that "No Wonder"? |
rampant:Does not mean I have to reciprocate. My lack-of-belief does not deserve respect. |
How could you be proud to literally take leave of your thinking faculties? |
rampant has taken leave of her on mental faculty, which space is now occupied by religion. Interesting link: http://www.christianaggression.com/item_display.php?type=ARTICLES&id=1137511050 |
Not good when god is your side, ehm! |
~Lady~:First off, I have respect for people and NOT for religions or any ideas for that matter. Secondly, pardon me, for your response smacks of exactly why I say religions have perverted the minds of many people, you most certainly included. You were basically saying that it is religion or the believe in god that makes people good, weren't? So if you did not believe in a superior being, you would not be good, would you? For a start, the greatest philanthropists (Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Carnegie ) in the history of humankind have been disbelievers in god I know religions motivates some people to be good, but this is certainly a lower quality of moral behaviour. I am a good person because I share a common humanity with everyone else, not because I expect to gain some reward from a superior being. In fact the history of your religion is littered with shameful atrocities committed in the name of your god and your pope - from the witch hunts, burning of books, persecution of heretics, complicity with slavery, etc. Why did their believe if god NOT stop them from committing these vile acts. To quote Stephen Weinburg - "Good people will do good things, bad people bad things, but for good people to do bad things that takes religion". My dear, educate yourself in the history of your religion and some critical thinking and scientific rationalism would not come amiss. By the way, why are you not protestant or baptist, or seven day adventist? |
~Lady~:Well, strictly speaking it is not hurting me direct but is hurting them, the believer directly in various ways namely financially, mentally, physically etc. It hurts me to see people so barely able to reason exploited so shame-facedly by these religious con-artists. It is because I care for them and the rest of the world that I am really concerned for their well-being. In the long-run our civilization is at risk of degeneration if scientific rationalism gives way to superstitious supernaturalism. That is why I care. |
good way to exploit. Give them an illness and then sell them the so-called cure for it. That is what religion in Nigeria is. |
