Christianity EtcFor I Tell You That Unless Your Righteousness Surpasses That Of The Pharisees. by huxley(op): 10:31pm On Jul 28, 2008
And The Teachers Of The Law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5.

Are you more righteous that the Pharisees and the teachers of the law? If not, what are your chances of entering into heaven.

The Pharisees were extremely exacting sticklers for the laws, and Jesus wants his follows to be even more observant of the law than the Pharisees. Matthew 5: 20.

What Laws is Jesus talking about, given that at the time of this pronouncement there was no New testament?

Could he have had this in mind - Exodus 21: 17, "Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death." ?

How often do you hear Matthew 5: 17 - 20 preached in your churches?

1. do you advocate the cursing of mother and father? that is a great abomination. no one
has to lay hands on you, one way or the other you will pay for it and even by your own hands or your children's hands.
2 how is given ripe fruits and liquors to God evil? God didn't ask that we kill firstborn, but that we offer them as servers of the Lord. Today we consecrate our children unto God, you do not hear of people killing their children, but taking them to Church and promising God to raise them accoding to his laws. That is giving your firtsborn sons to him. In that time they were to be servers in the house of God, as priests or more.
3 You have to be specific.
OK, turn your bible to Leviticus 27 and read the following verses;

26 " 'No one, however, may dedicate the firstborn of an animal, since the firstborn already belongs to the LORD; whether an ox [k] or a sheep, it is the LORD's. 27 If it is one of the unclean animals, he may buy it back at its set value, adding a fifth of the value to it. If he does not redeem it, it is to be sold at its set value.

28 " 'But nothing that a man owns and devotes [l] to the LORD -whether man or animal or family land—may be sold or redeemed; everything so devoted is most holy to the LORD.

29 " 'No person devoted to destruction may be ransomed; he must be put to death.

30 " 'A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD. 31 If a man redeems any of his tithe, he must add a fifth of the value to it. 32 The entire tithe of the herd and flock—every tenth animal that passes under the shepherd's rod—will be holy to the LORD. 33 He must not pick out the good from the bad or make any substitution. If he does make a substitution, both the animal and its substitute become holy and cannot be redeemed.' "

Is god asking for human sacrifices here? methink so.

Just being curious, since you're against 'religionism' and you are so bent on 'converting' people to ya belief. Okay, just these 3 questions for now:

1. What do you gain from that? Like you work for an agency, or what?

2. What would you do when you find out that you were wrong on the Judgment Day? [Notice: I said 'when' not 'if']

3. How many converts do you have so far?.

I'd like you to answer these. Safe
1) My gain is that I help eliminate superstition from our civilization. Take for instance the passage from the bible,

Exodus 22:18, "THOU SHALT NOT SUFFER A WITCH TO LIVE."

Tens of thousands of people died at the hands of Christian witch hunters in the Middle Ages as a direct inspiration of this passage.

Do you think if slavery had been explicitly condemned by the bible it would have had the direct support of the Christian churches.

This is what motivates me - the lack of critical thinking. It is difficult living in a world with people whose minds are set in bronze-age thinking.

2) Does our minds survive death?

3) Unlike you guys, I am not looking for converts. I am interested in educating.

Rubbish! See how religion has made you incapable of intelligent thought.

Who do you mean by "your father"? Did you mean you biological father, or the big sky daddy (AKA god)?

Supposing your biological father were to order you to steal or kill - would you obey?

Or supposing God were to order you to kill ( like he order Moses, Joshua etc) - would you obey?

Right on.

kufreabasi,
The general rule is anything in the OT not negated or modified in the NT is still valid.

For example the Law is no longer valid because Jesus gave us a new covenant.

Another example, the 10 commandments, they are still valid because they are basically echoed in instructions and teachings all through the NT in various places.

Why are you ignoring the following passage from Jesus, in Matthew 5;

17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19 Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Christianity EtcEvil Passages In Scriptures - The Bible And The Ko-ran by huxley(op): 5:21pm On Jul 28, 2008
Do you know of any evil passages in the Abrahamic scriptures - the Bible and the Ko-ran? Here are a few that would fall way below modern standards and which are definitely evil by any standard;

Bible:

1) Exodus 21: 17 And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.
2) Exodus 22:29 Thou shalt not delay to offer the first of thy ripe fruits, and of thy liquors: the firstborn of thy sons shalt thou give unto me.
3) All of Leviticus (Example Leviticus 27: 27 - 30, god asking for human sacrifices , yummy)

And this is what my New Century Version of the bible says about Lev 27: 29.

"If anyone is given for the purpose of being destroyed, he cannot be brought back; he must be put to death."

Kor-an:

"Believers, make war on the infidels who dwell around you. Deal firmly with them." (Surah 9:121-)
"Fight against such as those to whom the Scriptures were given [Jews and Christians], until they pay tribute out of hand and are utterly subdued." (Surah 9:27-)
"Believers, take neither Jews nor Christians for your friends." (Surah 5:51)

Can you come up with some more?

In the OT it says the following

Exodus 21: 17 And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.

Exodus 20: 13 Thou shalt not kill.

Huxley, if you had been a true seeker of knowledge, you would have studied the Qur'an. Allah says in this book; don't the disbelievers see that the heavens and the earth are one and we split them apart and made everything out of water? Chapter 21 verse 30.

If you had read the qur'an you would have seen where it is commanded that no one should should kill their children for any mundane reason.

You need to read the Qur'an and know what is stated since 1400 years, that it is not irrelevant to science, and there are still many more to be discovered about this in the future.

@Wirinet:
Old habits die rather too slowly. How is Ibrahim Jewish, a man who came from Iraq and dies before Jacob and his children, from where Judaism or Jew as a word sprang come left for Egypt? Did he become Jew in the grave, after he had died? I was joking with a friend the other day and i said that will an american will say on the Judgement day: I am an american man, you got to judge me as an american?

She laughed, definitely realising that your national identity is irrelevant and dies when you die. I will ask if those people who died before america was named the United States, prior to the war of independence, can they be said to be US Citizen? If all of this is not possible, then to attach Judaism as Ibrahim identity is wrong labelling of his person.
I have never read the k-ran, but can the following be found therein?

", now that a Book confirming their own has come to them from God, they deny it, they reply: 'We believe in what was revealed to us.' But they deny what has since been revealed, although it is truth, Say: 'Whoever is an enemy of Gabriel' (who has by God's grace revealed to you [Muhammad] the Koran as a guide, confirming previous scriptures), will surely find that God is the enemy of the unbelievers.', And now that an apostle has come to them from God confirming their own Scriptures, some of those to whom the Scriptures were given cast off the Book of God behind their backs, The unbelievers among the People of the Book, and the pagans, resent that any blessings should have been sent down to you from your Lord. Huxley,
I really appreciate your views, but you have to learn to accommodate others who do not necessarily share your views. You should also learn social evolution apart from biological evolutions.

All societies starts out with Animism, which involves human sacrifice and all. It is after societal advancement that a few people are able to gradually lead people away from such practices. And these people did not change their societies by being to aggressive, confrontational or arrogant, and they still suffered a lot of persecution. Eg Copernicus, Galileo, etc.
Galileo was only pardoned by the Catholic church less than 10 years ago for heresy ( saying that the earth was a sphere and it revolves around the sun and not the other way as divinely ordained by the church).

I do not support sacrifices and killing of twins, but every society including European, Arabic and even Jewish (Abraham was willing to sacrifice his son to God) practice human sacrifice at some time. It is through Education and Reason that these practices were stopped.

Also because we are still backward is a lot of are practices due to ignorance and high level of illiteracy, but changing the society should be approached systematically or else you will not achieve anything but hated.

You must learn to understand and appreciate other people's beliefs before you can even attempt to change them. The European had a very difficult time converting our people, also the Arabs had to do it by force. People do not change their established beliefs easily. I am sure it took a lot from you before you could leave Christianity.

So have patience, people will eventually change when they realize that their destiny is in their hands and not in the Hands of any God/spirit/demon/angels.

Where is Europe that formulated, propagated and died for Christianity today, they have moved on.
We will get there, It is only a matter of time
Great post. Little there to disagree with except one thing.

Like you say, changing minds is a very challenging thing. I like your reference to the situation the Europeans would have faced with trying to change the Africa's minds from traditional African beliefs to now believing in the Judeo-Christian myth.

Basically, if the belief was not harmful to society and if there were not spreading their vile beliefs I would not care so much. I shall give some example of the dangers we face if the majority of people have beliefs that are not founded in reality;

1) The Catholic church discourages the use of condoms even in countries (and families) where AIDS is a risk solely on religious grounds

2) Religious institutions oppose stem-cell research on religious grounds.

3) Slavery, witchhunts was justified on religious grounds

4) 9/11 was religiously motivated

5) The teaching of evolution is opposed on religious grounds.

Do you see the dangers that our civilisation faces from the dark-age mentality of the religious.

While I agree that patience and education is required, the spread of fundamentalism is Africa and other parts of the world far outstrips the pace of educations in scientific rationalism. If the enlightened did nothing and allowed themselves to be silenced by the religious majority, where do you think we would be today?

We would still be having religious motivated witch-hunts in all Christian cities of the world.

I can answer your questions except the last one. I have no idea what cognitive dissonance is, so please educate me. I am always eager to learn from those more knowledgeable than myself.

The problem i have with you is the reasons for asking these questions.
If you are asking because you do not know and want to improve your knowledge, then it is alright.
If you truly know and want to share your knowledge, it is also alright.
But if you ask because you just want to show off, or you think you are better than others, then thats egocentric arrogance, you are not better than religionists who view themselves as superior to everyone else.

The world would be a better place if we learn to respect the beliefs of others.
Many thanks for your post. I appreciate it greatly that you have read my post and most of all, asked some very insightful questions. I think you have touched the heart of the reason why I post at all on this forum.

Ok, let me start. I am extremely passionate about education (not just the type that allows one to gain employer) and I believe that seeking after true knowledge is at the heart of what makes us human. Consequently, I take a dim view of supernaturalism as they have proven to be notoriously unreliable. I also like to share my view with others, not so much to show-off as to prompt other to think outside their usually uncritical paradigm. That is not to say that my view are correct. In fact, I am more concerned about the process, than the end result. In other words, I am more concerned about how one gets at truths about the nature of reality than at the truths themselves.

Now, how do we come to understand the nature of reality? Do you know of any systematic epistemic methodology for investigating reality? There are two competing tradition that claim to be able to reveal knowledge about reality;

1) Scientific rationalism
2) Supernaturalism and revelations

Of these two, which has contributed more towards the advancement of human knowledge about reality?

Please, do not mistake my passion for investigating reality for arrogance. There is nothing that I know that is beyond the ability of any individual to learn themselves as long as they have started asking themselves the important questions about reality. However, a certain mode of thinking inevitably puts outside the trend of modern civilisation. Consider the tribe in Nigeria that used to abandon its twin children in the forest because they believed that twins possessed ill omens. While it would be wrong to consider oneself superior to a practitioner of twins-abandonment, I totally despise their beliefs and would not refrain from criticizing such beliefs.

Take for instance, the natural phenomenon of lightening. Only about 200 years ago, it was widely believed that lightening strikes were sent by god as a sign of his displeasure with humans. Why is it wrong and dangerous to have such beliefs and how can one go about investigating the truth of such claims?

A true Evolutionist must NEVER be arrogant, but must understand, appreciate and respect other people beliefs. To most people, their beliefs is their life, so it must be respected. I hate it when people try to ridicule other people beliefs. A person beliefs according to their exposure, education, custom and orientation. You cannot expect someone who has never been to school to understand evolution. Likewise a Christian cannot understand Buddhism.
To be an evolutionist is not a metaphysical or moralistic position. It is simply an acknowledgement of the fact that life on the planet has undergone evolutionary change over time. PERIOD. It is NOT a religious position nor a belief system. Being an evolutionist is not inconsistent with anything else except an acceptance of evolution from common descent. Thus one can be an evolutionist and at the same time be arrogant, deceitful, criminal, pleasant, trustworthy, charitable, etc, etc. None of these is a requirement to be an an evolutionist. Just as none of these are a requirement to be a physicist, cosmologist, or economist.

I am more critical of those who deserve to know better but are deliberately and willfully ignorant of the facts and evidence. Much more so when they try to spread their falsehood.

The world would be a better place if we learn to respect the beliefs of others.
I disagree. Respect should be reserved for people and NOT for beliefs. What if the belief about twin-abandonment, human sacrifices, slavery etc had been respected. Would the world be a better place?

Should we respect the belief that the Africaans in South Africa thought they were superior to the Africa?

Christianity EtcRe: Questions For Evolutionists And Atheists by huxley(m): 6:23pm On Jul 27, 2008
OLAADEGBU:
When discussing natural selection as a possible mechanism for evolution, it is important to define terms. Evolutionists and biblical creationists view these terms differently, but it comes down to how we interpret the evidence in the light of our foundation. I view natural selection using The Truth Book as my foundation, evolutionists use man's truth as their foundation.

The creationist view of natural selection is supported biblically and scientifically. Natural selection is a God-ordained process that allows organisms to survive in a post-Fall, post-Flood world. It is an observable reality that occurs in the present and takes advantage of the variations within the 'kinds' and works to preserve the genetic viability of the 'kinds'. Genesis 1:21-24

Simply put, the changes that are observed today show variation within the created kind, which is a horizontal change. For a molecules-to-man evolutionary model, there must be a change from one kind into another-- a vertical change. This is simply not observed. We have never seen a bacterium like H. pylori give rise to something like a dog. shocked Instead, we simply observe variations within each created kind.

Evolution requires an increase in information that results in a directional movement from molecules to man. Natural selection cannot be a mechanism for evolution because it results in a decrease in information and is not directional. Speciation may occur as a result of natural selection, but it only occurs within a kind. Therefore, it is also not a mechanism for evolution but rather supports the biblical model as recorded in the book of Genesis.

Natural selection cannot be the driving force for molecule to man evolution when it does not have that power, nor should it be confused with molecules-to man-evolution. Natural selection is an observable phenomenon that preserves genetic viability and allows limited variation within a kind - nothing more, nothing less.QED wink

It is a great confirmation of the Bible's history. So I praise the Lord for the uncompromising biblical creationist scientists that have used their knowledge and understanding of science to discover and properly interprete the truth that was already written in the Truth book. cheesy

This is what is called quote-minding, a trick most beloved of creationist. Can you show a single eminent biologist who disagrees with evolution.

There is much debate in biology about many features of evolution, most notable about the driving force behind evolution. At the moment it is not completely known whether natural selection is the sole driving force behind evolution. There are tens of other issues in evolution about which there is no consensus. What that shameful site is doing is lifting quotes out of context in which scientist are debating the various complex issues about evolution.

There is similar debate in the physic community about gravity and relativity. But does that mean that the theories of gravity and relativity are unsupported?

Will I be right if I told you that your forefather was a fish and therefore you are a descendant of fish?
Why does something look familiar? Ah, you have not answered the question. smiley

Yes, you would be absolutely right. We are all descended in the very distant past from an aquatic animal, a fish if you like. Do you know what tiktaalik (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiktaalik) is ?

Or are you too stupid to read up about it?

Would I not be insulting your intelligence and pride if I said that your forefather was a fish?
CAn you show me how that is an insult to my pride and intelligence?

Why are there no fossils of rabbits in pre-Cambrian and Cambrian rocks

What are stromalolites?

What is the end-permian extinction event?

What is cognitive dissonance?

I bet, no honest Christian can answer these questions. I would like to be proved wrong.

Numbers 27

8 "Say to the Israelites, 'If a man dies and leaves no son, turn his inheritance over to his daughter.

Numbers 6

6 "If she marries after28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, 29 he shall pay the girl's father fifty shekels of silver. [c] He must marry the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives. she makes a vow or after her lips utter a rash promise by which she obligates herself 7 and her husband hears about it but says nothing to her, then her vows or the pledges by which she obligated herself will stand. 8 But if her husband forbids her when he hears about it, he nullifies the vow that obligates her or the rash promise by which she obligates herself, and the LORD will release her.

Deut 22;

23 If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, 24 you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death—the girl because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man's wife. You must purge the evil from among you.

28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, 29 he shall pay the girl's father fifty shekels of silver. [c] He must marry the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.

1 Corinthians 14

34 women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. 35If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.

1 Timothy 2

11A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. 12I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent. 13For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 15But women[a] will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.

1 Corinthians 11
3Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. 4Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. 5And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is just as though her head were shaved. 6If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head. 7A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. 8For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; 9neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. 10For this reason, and because of the angels, the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head.

Leviticus 12:

1 The LORD said to Moses, 2 "Say to the Israelites: 'A woman who becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son will be ceremonially unclean for seven days, just as she is unclean during her monthly period. 3 On the eighth day the boy is to be circumcised. 4 Then the woman must wait thirty-three days to be purified from her bleeding. She must not touch anything sacred or go to the sanctuary until the days of her purification are over. 5 If she gives birth to a daughter, for two weeks the woman will be unclean, as during her period. Then she must wait sixty-six days to be purified from her bleeding.

Matthew 5
31"It has been said, 'Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.'[f] 32But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery.

Turn your bible to Deut 22:

23 If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her,
24 you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death—the girl because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man's wife. You must purge the evil from among you.

28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered,
29 he shall pay the girl's father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.

If you were the victim of rape, would you want to marry your attacker and stay with him for the rest of his life?

If you were a parent, would you accepts money from the rapist of your daughter?

Would you stone a victim of rape to death?

How do the above compare with the way victims of rape are treated in enlightened societies today?
As bad as it is, in which tradition (biblical or modern) would you have been treated better as a victim of rape?
Is the bible a good book?

Can I remind all poster of what Jesus said in Matthew 5: 17-22 "I do not come to abolish the law, but to fulfil it . . . ". When Jesus made references to "the scriptures", what documents was he refering to, given the New Testament did not exist at the time. Please, posters, in answering my questions, keep in mind these two reference questions.

Many thanks
