Preparations towards the meeting of the All Progressives Congress leaders and the newly elected National Assembly members to produce the party’s consensus candidates that will be presented as the Senate President and the House of Representatives Speaker during the inauguration of the 8th National Assembly on Tuesday is currently generating tension. The two contestants for the post of Senate President are Senators Bukola Saraki (Kwara Central) and Ahmad Lawan (Yobe North). Leaders of the two camps said on Friday that they had more than enough support that would ensure the emergence of their candidates as the party’s choice. The two camps claimed that they had written the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie -Oyegun, on the suitability of their respective candidates for the post because of their overwhelming support among the APC senators’ fold. Indications that the situation might get out of control at today’s meeting emerged when both camps, as of Friday evening, were still laying claim to having 35 members each, making 70 whereas there are just 59 APC senators – elect who will be inaugurated on Tuesday. Senator Kabiru Marafa, (Zamfara Central), who is campaigning for Lawan, told our correspondent that his group had submitted its letter to the party leadership containing 35 names and assured Nigerians that all the members would be physically present at the meeting. Marafa said, “There are 59 APC senators -elect following the death of Ahmed Zannah (Borno North ) and we have 35 of the number in the Senate Unity Forum. Nobody can manipulate it because the people will appear physically. “I can assure you that all of us will be there tomorrow (today) to answer our names in support of Senator Lawan. We are 35 and you will see us there live, we are ready for the primary election and we shall surely win.” But Dino Melaye, (Kogi West) alleged that members of the SUF were not being truthful in their claims, having pledged last week to unfold the list of 40 members in their fold but failed to do so, only for them to start claiming that they have 35 members. He said, “The Like Minds Senators stand by our figure. We are intact. We held a meeting today (Friday), and all of us still spoke with one voice. We are ready for the primary election that will produce the best candidate anytime.” Meanwhile, the Like Minds Senators, through a statement jointly signed on Friday by Melaye and Senator Ahmed Sani, challenged Lawan’s group to publicly exhibit the names and signatories they claim that consist their supporters in the senate. The pro-Saraki group equally urged them to consolidate it further by submitting the names of the senators that had passed a resolution endorsing Lawan as the next Senate President as the senators of the like minds did when they submitted 34 senators endorsing Saraki on May 24. The group said, “On two occasions, APC has called for due internal democracy through primary elections. On the same two occasions, they (SUF members) have evaded these primary elections to determine the President of the 8th Senate. “Their latest presentation to our National Chairman, that ranking should be a criterion for the selection of the next Senate President is foolhardy to suggest because if Ahmed Lawan is the most ranking senator, where then was he when George Akume was selected the Minority Leader of the Senate? http://www.punchng.com/news/senate-presidency-saraki-lawan-camp-ready-for-showdown-today/ |
The National Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria on Friday held a meeting in Ibadan where it gave a two-week ultimatum to Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, to pay five months salaries of resident doctors of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital. The association’s President, Dr. Dan-Jumbo Prince, told journalists that the institution had struggled through every stage of its development despite serving the purpose for which it was established. He accused Ajimobi of deliberately neglecting the institution, adding that the action had denied the citizens of the state, medical students of the institution and others of quality service from the teaching hospital. Prince warned that a national strike might be embarked upon if Oyo, Osun, Lagos, Benue and other states that owed doctors refused to pay them. He said, “Under Ajimobi’s administration, Oyo citizens have been denied the best of care due to staggering and unstable environment relatively prevailing all year round within this institution. One can only imagine what the employees and their families are experiencing this time. “The hospital is suffering because of the lack of commitment and fairness on the part of the state government, non-existence of a hospital board for a teaching hospital that has a well spelt out edict establishing it. “The truth must be told that the hospital workers have yet to receive any salary since the beginning of this year. How does the government expect us to deliver safe, quality and effective health care to the people?” Meanwhile, the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress on Friday suspended its nine-day-old strike after the leadership of the union said it had reached an agreement with the state government over payment of salary arrears. The union directed its members to stay off work from May 26 because of unpaid salaries and retirees’ pensions. On Friday, the Chairman of the state chapter of the NLC, Waheed Olojede, called on the workers to resume work on Monday, June 8, 2015, saying that after several days of negotiation with the state government, an agreement was reached that was suitable to both parties. “After a successful negotiation which led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the state government, the labour union has resolved to suspend the strike,” Olojede said, adding that the union had also reached an agreement with the state government on modalities to employ to pay the outstanding March, April and May salaries. http://www.punchng.com/news/unpaid-salaries-lautech-doctors-give-oyo-ultimatum/ |

Suspected armed robbers have invaded Lagos State Ministry of Justice, Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja, carting away a sum of N3 million kept in the ministry. Vanguard gathered that the robbers attacked the ministry’s Account Department at the early hours of Friday, through the ceiling, where they carted away the fund. Sources said that the fund was brought in at the close of work on Thursday and kept in one of the office. The fund was raised to offset the allowances of about 40 ad-hoc staffs, working as mediation officers for the ministry. Vanguard learned that inspite of the security officers attached to the ministry, none of the robbers was arrested. But the act was not discovered until about 9:00 am by a staff that raised the alarm to alert others of the act perpetrated earlier in the day. When our correspondent visited the ministry, the entire doors were shut to avert any interference with the investigations. Sources said that about 20 civil servants attached to the department have been detained by the Alausa Police Station for investigation and security officers. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/robbers-invade-alausa-secretariat-cart-away-n3-mn/ |

The All Progressives Congress on Thursday shelved a scheduled meeting with Senators-elect and members-elect of the House of Representatives apparently to avert a full blown crisis. At the International Conference Centre, venue of the meeting in Abuja at 10:32am, only a handful of armed soldiers, policemen and private security guards were seen. It was learnt that the party’s national working committee hurriedly called off the meeting after receiving intelligence report that the APC legislators-elect were spoiling for a fight. A senator-elect said, “Some of us were at the International Conference Centre, venue of the proposed meeting here(Abuja) as early as 7am waiting for our party leaders when some of our colleagues, mainly from the lower chamber arrived. “The atmosphere became charged as the members-elect were discussing aloud and threatening to create a stalemate in case there is any move by the leadership to introduce the issue of consensus candidates for the leadership positions in the two chambers. “It was when the situation was getting out of hand that we got a message that the meeting had been cancelled by the party’s leadership.” But the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Lai Mohammed, dismissed the insinuation that it shelved the meeting out of fear. He said, “When we fixed the meeting, we were unaware that the Senate would be holding its valedictory service today(Thursday). The meeting has therefore been rescheduled for Saturday.” The PUNCH, however, gathered that the legislators grouse was what some of them considered the party’s meddlesomeness in the affairs of the incoming 8th National Assembly. Signs that the meeting might hit the brick wall emerged on Wednesday when some of the legislators-elect showed that they were uncomfortable with information that the party’s leadership was planning to use the meeting to railroad them into picking consensus candidates for leadership positions in the Senate and the House of Representatives. Senators Ahmed Lawan (Yobe State) and George Akume (Benue State) are said to be the APC’s preferred candidates for the positions of Senate president and deputy senate president respectively. However, Senator Bukola Saraki (Kwara State) is said to be relying on the support of his colleagues across party lines to get the job. In the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila (Lagos state) and Mohammed Mongonu (Borno) are said to enjoy the support of most of APC’s leaders for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively. The party has insisted that it does not have preferred candidates for the leadership positions in the National Assembly. Some APC National Assembly members-elect operating under the aegis of the 8th Assembly Consolidation Group, had in a statement on Wednesday cautioned the APC leadership against acts capable of distabilising the party. The statement which was signed by Ahman Aliyu Pategi, Zakari Mohammed, Babangida Ibrahim Mahuta, Aishat Dukku, Haliru Jika and Jagaba Adams Jagaba urged the party to abide by President Muhammadu Buhari’s none interference posture. The statement partly read,“We wish to draw the attention of our great party, the All Progressive’s Congress and Nigerians to certain unethical and un-democratic moves by some desperate party leaders who are bent on subverting the laid down procedure on the emergence of the Speaker of the 8th Assembly in accordance with the House Standing Orders and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.” When our correspondent visited the International Conference Centre, venue of the meeting in Abuja at 10:32am, only a handful of armed soldiers, policemen and private security guards were seen. http://www.punchng.com/news/nassembly-leadership-apc-shelves-meeting-with-senators-reps-elect/ |
