I still don't know what I will do to achieve my targeted score in GRE. This exam is crazy and I need to stay off it for now. Today, I don't have excuse about my emotion but I know from the first verbal, I started losing it. Many confusing options and no time to think. Most of the things in the second and their quant started to look like arabic after the first verbal.

At least I am sure I am staying away from GRE at least for this year an early next year. I will just have to do with my current score.
V148
Q160
I hope my AWA will be better than the 3.0 I got in the first one because this one seems to be easier for me.
I wish all those people write this year all the best. And I pray they achieve their targeted score.

Please if you know any school that can accept this my score for PhD in Chemical Engineering, kindly let me know. My major target seems to be out of it.
Thanks all and special thanks to Vardy92 for advise.

Check university of Alabama
University of Kentucky.
Both accept 300 for chemistry courses.
I sent you mail.

Good day everyone,
I wrote GRE last month.
Verbal: 143
Quant: 156
AWA: 3.5.

I intended to apply for the Spring 2020 admission. Needless to say, I used only one week to fully prepare for the test due to the nature of my job, although I have always been checking GRE vocabulary words on Magoosh flashcards during leisure time. I never knew my verbal and AWA skills were poor, perhaps because I did not have ample time to take the practice tests.
My questions:
Which ebook is the best for verbal and AWA? How can I improve these scores?
Which material can I use to study Data Interpretation as I was unable to solve some questions in that section on the test day?

Proposed Schools (PhD)?
Purdue University
University of Florida
Virginia Tech
Kansas State University

Area of Interests
Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering or
Environmental Engineering

So I wrote the GRE last week Monday.
Quantitative : 153
Verbal : 155
AWA : 4.0

I prepared for the exam within 2 months, 95% of my studying was on the quant section with 5lb Manhattan book.
I hardly studied for the verbal. The only verbal stuff I studied was the 101 word list on crunchprep (which was helpful)
I did not practise the AWA, not even once. I just read some sample and scored essays on the ets site. You can look them up.

Advice : When studying the quant section, especially if you're using 5lb Manhattan book, study these topics well because they are the most frequent :
Word problems.
Two variable word problems.
Geometry (esp angles).
Ratios, percents and fractions .
Algebra.
Inequalities and absolute values.
Data interpretation (they too love this section) cheesy
Improve your vocabulary for the verbal. Its materials are the easiest to get since you can just google "Frequent gre words" and many results will come out. Also take the practice test! So you can get used to reading their comprehensions and keeping your focus. This is an arduous task.

For the AWA, read samples from ets official site. The samples are scored and analyzed for you. Also practice writing essays quickly.

The best way to get the 'feel' of the actual exam is by taking practice tests. When taking practice tests, please for your sake, DO NOT GUESS. Any questions you are not sure of, just leave them blank. This is because you might get lucky with your guesses and overestimate your potentials or progress. But on exam day, you might not be so lucky with the guesses.
The answers to all questions on the practice test can be found on Google. So use that to correct yourself.
My first practice test : Q 147 V 148
2nd practice test : Q 150 V 149

Good luck!

Congratulations. Good to see that you actual score is better than the practice test.
My first practice test was 296: Q 150 V 146.
Since then I've been unable to get pass that score.
2nd practice test worse : Q 146 V 141.

I told myself I wont write until I score at least 310 in the practice test, and this is my 4 month of preparation.

Good evening Scholars,

The last couple of months have been traumatic for me, following the shock loss of my foster-father, hence my inability to respond and make contributions on this wonderful thread. Thank you CptCharlesVane, Instinct20, fame12k for your prompt and encouraging responses to my earlier post.
I got an offer from K-State with funding as a GTA (full tuition + stipend), it is the first decision out of two.

MY GRE AND TOEFL

I prepared for the GRE for 3 weeks and used only the ETS official guides. After two weeks I took the first powerprep and had Q157, V152. A couple of days before the actual test I took the second powerprep and had Q162, V153. I do not intend to make other materials lose relevance but for prospective test takers, please endeavor to also use the official prep materials (if possible begin with them) and take simulated tests prior to the exam.
In a like manner, I practiced for the TOEFL using the ETS guide. I practiced listening using VOA, TedTalks, documentaries and CNN. For the speaking, I would not recommend going in with “templates” as the questions may not fit well with them. I suggest you speak freely and flow naturally but on-point.
For those applying to study STEM courses, please endeavor to learn R and MATLAB/GNU Octave software. A friend who got into the Geophysics program of a top Canadian School is really finding it challenging without proficiency in the software. There are free tutorials in form of books and videos online but if they are difficult to access, please feel free to contact me.

SOP

Please make effort to spend good time in writing your SOP. I used, on the average, 4 days per paragraph in drafting my SOP. Whatever exposure you’ve had that will be beneficial to your application, if documented or reported on the internet (such as magazines or national dailies), please include the url in your SOP. For example, undergraduate awards/scholarships, publications, presentations etc.
I’m sorry if my write up isn’t detailed enough, still trying to pull myself together, seeing that the one who single-handedly invested in my life and education is no more to see his efforts yielding fruits and prayers for me being answered.
Lastly, I'd like to urge you NEVER TO GIVE UP. If you’ve not succeeded, it doesn’t mean you will not. Failure is never final and success is never ending. Trust God and He will make all thing beautiful in His time. You will get there!

I love you all!!!
Congratulations.
Sorry for your lose. May God give you the strength to bear the lose.

You didn't include your actual GRE score. Lastly, how many times did study the ETS guide.

Please don't get confused by using all kinds of material. Different guys follow different approach to the solutions. Be clear while picking up the material. And yes videos really works well also you need to practice. At the end only your practice matters. And the most important thing is stop worrying. This nowhere helps you in getting good score. Keep calm and practice well. I personally prefer Galvanize Test Prep where I solved many GRE practice tests and got clarified through video lectures. At the end I would like to say it again...Stop Worrying and keep practicing.

I think this message is for me,
The reason why I use videos is that it also serves as practice test, I try to answer the question ask before playing the video to see the answer.

I don't know your manner of approach, but this means you would have to change it. Have you tried taking note of your weak areas from the practise tests, and learning better ways of solving them. You should check out Manhattan 6 pounds. It's a good book too.
From experience, progress isn't instantaneous, it's gradual. So you just have to persevere a little.

All the best!!

Please where can I download Manhattan 6?

Remember to take advantage of the four free score report recipients (schools). Enter recipients a day before the exam (closes by 10pm). Every score report after then is $20
A day before? , I thought its on the test day you will send scores to schools.

Hi all,
My gre is on the 4th of January next year, same with TOEFL that same month, yes I decided to register after procrastinating for many months, I am not the most brilliant student but I believe I will do well if I prepare very well, I'm currently stuck in 285 in the power prep test which is frustrating. Honestly I'm investing a lot of time in the gre which has made me loss weight, the materials I'm using are as follows.

1. Nova
2. Ets
3. Princeton preview, (not yet used)
4. Kaplan

Currently I'm no longer using any material since my scores have stalled on the prep test, I now use videos, 1k plus videos for both quant and vocab.
Please gurus in the house, what do you think I should do to increase my score, I need to improve before 4th of January, I can't be investing close to half a day and losing weight (5kg) with nothing to show for it.
I need help.

GRE is not a few weeks preparation exam. Joining those groups at a time very close to your exam MAY be counter productive. This is just an advice, it's entirely up to you to decide.
I have been preparing for months now, tho not consistent, started intensive preparation two weeks ago, my exam is on the 4th of January. Thank you

Pls do keep writing....We need to enlighten people. I belong to several GRE and MSINUS groups which are full of Indians and i have made lots of friends along the way. These guys are "go getters" their tenacity is quite infectious.

Infact i have found some study buddies among them and i have improved alot in my GRE study. I was targeting fall 2019 before into some low tier schools because i also have a 9-5 job in a tech firm.

But i have decided to push it to 2020 because most of the top tier schools funding deadlines have either passed or are coming up soon and i wont be able to meet them. Also my course of study isn't really in low tier schools which has to do with Tech Innovation. Another great factor is the time it offers me to be more embedded in more tech and community projects in the next 8 months which would strengthen my application.

My target schools are Boston University for their dual degree, Cornell University, University of Virginia and some other mid tier schools.

One thing i decided to do is to check out their requirements and understand what is required. I have 8 months from now to put my best foot forward. I have also identified some bias that can work on my behalf.

1. African
2. Female
3. In Tech (3 magic words that sells like hot cake right now) grin

Secondly, i have reached out to alumni's in my proposed program on linkedin for tips etc, I found out for Boston University the rate of Africans applying to that course is very low. Infact 2016 set just had 1 African a Sudanese.... Spoke to her and found out she didn't even have the "top notch GRE score needed" Same with a friend who just got into Harvard but diversity, etc played a part.

Indians: What people don't understand is that they are in competition with each other for admit spots. An Indian once told me they are held to a higher standard than others from other countries just because they are too many of them that are just as good. That's why you find an Indian who got 320 in GRE crying and saying how can he get 330 embarassed can you imagine?

Funding: The art of predicting every factor before it happens restrains anything from happening. I believe in taking a step at a time. You never know what can happen.

The inspiring story of how Koye got into INSEAD is a testimony to this among others https://www.bellanaija.com/2018/01/mogbekeloluwa-koye-ladele-shares-inspiring-insead-journey/

Another Great factor is: THE LONG TERM PLAN. Many Nigerians are very short sighted and they don't see the future nor the cycle change of leadership turning. The relationships, networks and pedigree etc can really do wonders for your future.

I am just encouraging people to make the best out of every opportunity that comes your way. Strive for the best as it plays out well in the long run. At least TRY! smiley

Baba please how do I join such groups, my gre is in few weeks time. Please help, thank you

Is it because I'm applying late?
