NairobiWalker: There's another song (nasema asante) that Yemi sang alone in Swahili. You're clearly trying too hard. hmm, never heard that song. I'll try to listen to it. Yemi Alade is an African woman to the core. You can see how African she behaves and sings and that is why people all over Africa like her and she is currently the best female artiste in Africa. Coke studio has brought all African artistes from all over the continent to sing and record musics together. Yemi Alade is probably trying to gain a better fan base in East Africa which i think is splendid, or should we just say she has found a Kenyan boo or crush just like me, .maybe one of the Sauti sol singers. . I am very much in support of the unity of the African entertainment industry, believe me. East Africa has a large market for entertainment when you put all East African nations together. If u East Africans can unite well and work better, believe me, Nigeria would not dominate the entertainment industry in Africa as we are doing now. |

Muafrika2: Yep. The Nubians are still strong and easily stand out in Kibra. They are not happy with the slum upgrade because it is being done on the land. But the government has a right to do it, especially for public interest.
Mathare is 300m by 2km. The land is private but occupied by squatters.
Probably started by low income workers wanting to stay closer to their work places around the city.
The 2009 census counted just over 80 000 people living in Mathare’s 13 villages Ok. But am also interested in these Nubians cos am a historian. Do these nubians still speak their native sudanic languages? Can they still trace their ways back to their homelands in Sudan? What ethnicity do they profess in Kenya? |

Xensity: You forgot to mention these:
Because you are a woman, a man is expected to pay for you when you both go out, while you just eat and enjoy.
Because you are a woman, a man is not expected to hit you.
Because you are a woman, it's expected of men to do the physically challenging and strenuous jobs, while you do the easy ones.
Because you are a woman, men are expected to protect you like they were your bodyguards.
Because you are a woman, a man is expected to provide for you and take care of you, even if you can provide and take care of yourself.
Because you are a woman, men are expected to defy their natural programming, take medications, do exercises and practice hard, just to spend an inordinate amount of time pleasing you during sex.
I despise threads like this. You are painting a hyperbolic picture of what women experience while demonizing men in the process. You are also victimizing your gender in such a dishonest way, and making it seem like all you said is a true representation of how majority of men view or treat women in our present day.
You feminist apologists should just shut the fuuuck up. There has never been a better time for women in the history of human civilization than now. The world is getting better for your gender. Fuuucking remove the ideological blindfolds from your eyes and see.
Why don't you borrow a time machine and take your disingenuous thread to the 18th century. That's where it would make sense. Mtcheew. Must everyone comment? Some people just cannot withstand reality. |

So they all cannot appear on a map. When you hear of over 350 ethnic groups in Nigeria, where do u think they are located? Plateau state (my homestate) has about 50 ethnic groups who speak completely different languages. There is a particular LGA in Jos here that has about 9 different ethnic groups. States like Taraba, Kaduna and Adamawa are even worse. The South-south region also has many ethnic groups too, Cross River state for instance has over 50 ethnic groups too, but imagine in this map, only Efik was mentioned. Are u yoruba or Igbo? |

Muafrika2: Kibera/Kibra was a land expanse just outside the Nairobi CBD that the British colonial government gifted to Nubian soldiers from Sudan. They had fought for the British in a war and were frequently used against African rebels in colonies.
The problem with the Nubians is that they opted for mud and tin roofs as building materials, paid no attention to social amenities and built rentals which were soon taken up by Africans migrating to the cities from the villages. In addition to the Nubians lands, the railway reserves, lands owned by the Kenya Railway were soon invaded and form part of Kibera.
Well, if you are jobless in a slum, and get a house that could bring in 20 times as much as you earn in rent, would you move into it and continue to starve in the pretty house or would you turn it into a source of income? I would do the later.
Many of them are however renting out the extra bedrooms in their houses while squeezing themselves in the remaining space. Oh my, very enlightening response. Are the descendants of these Nubians still there in Kibera or they left? What about the other Africans who came to Kibera later on? Are they from indigenous kenyan tribes? If yes, can they still trace their native villages in Kenya? You are very correct, giving a pretty house to a jobless slum dweller is somehow unuseful, I think the best way to liberate people from the slums is to get them gainfully employed with well paying Jobs in the main city. You have told me about Kibera, what about Mathare and the others? I heard Mathare is even bigger than Kibera? |

mkenya254: First off I will address why I came to this forum. I am here because I have been to Nigeria on business and I am going to be there again on February. So I like being abreast with what is going on there. Security, how I am going to entertain myself etc since I will be there for a while. I have seen several Nigerians on the Kenyan forum as well.
Second, Kenyans do not admire anything about your politics and economics. And I am being honest. African politics is riddled with corruption, greed etc so no one looks upto you on that.
Now entertainment(music and movies) is one this that every African country admires about Nigeria. The industry is very mature and local content production and consumption has been promoted so much. For Kenya we have a lot of imported music even though we have local music. You can listen to Nigerian music, South African Kwaito, Ghanaian music, Congolese music in diverse clubs.
About Kenyans being interested in pidgin English, it's just from your music. The only terms Kenyans know are Oga, Big Broda and that's it. In fact on my first trip to Lagos I thought I knew the gist of pidgin and could easily understand it since it has a lot of English but when I got to Lagos is when I realized it is so deep.
About Nigerians not knowing anything about Kenya while Kenyans know a thing or 2 about Nigeria. In the Kenyan education system, you have to undertake a subject called Social Studies from around age 4-14. There you are taught about majority of the African countries, their history, geography and demography. In fact we learn about your big 3 tribes at around class 7(age 13). And it is not only Nigeria, we learn about Congo, South Africa, Senegal, Mozambique,Zimbabwe etc. And these are tested in the exams. If you don't belive me ask me to send you pictures of some Kenyan textbooks and I will happily oblige. On the high school level if you specialize on History as a subject is gets even deeper
There are things we would like to borrow from you and there are other influences we also do not want borrowed What brings u to Nigeria specifically? Am curious. About Nigerian pidgin, i don't think Lagosians even speak real Nigerian pidgin cos yoruba is the street language in many parts of Lagos, and Lagos pidgin is mixed with yoruba a lot. If u want to hear real Nigerian pidgin, i think you should visit Nigerian cities like Warri, Benin and Port harcourt (south-south Nigeria), where the language originated. This is where you find the best pidgin speakers, many who speak it as a first language and their major language at home, it is fast displacing their native languages over here. Infact if u hear real Warri Pidgin english, u may not be able to pick a single word out. We just don't have enough movie producers from South-south Nigeria to promote Pidgin language movie industry. So u only hear some good pidgin in our musics. Our govt is not interested in promoting the language if not it would have had a greater international image by now. On the part of history, even though we offer social studies as a subject from our Primary school levels, i agree that we really do not learn about African peoples and cultures. Only those that offer history as a subject in senior secondary schools have a chance to learning that. I think our educational authorities really need to work on that aspect. |

Another question i have for Kenyans here
Pls i want to know, what are Kenyan citizens and the Kenyan govt really doing about these Nairobi slums? Nairobi slums really appear numerous and quite large for the population of Nairobi and how did these slums evolve? Makoko the only slum in Lagos which has been demolished started out or was originally a fishing community where most of the population were from Benin republic boundary areas with Nigeria.
I have seen a few pictures of some new mass housing buildings done in Nairobi slums to resettle the slum dwellers but i also heard that some of the resettled slum dwellers sold the comfortable houses they were given and went back to the slums, i mean that's terrible.

mkenya254: The reason why ladies of lighter complexion are more popular by Africans is simply a case of supply and demand. There are more naturally dark ladies than light ones since we are blacks hence a lighter shade is rare and hence more glorified.
I have been to a country like Namibia where most ladies are usually very slim and a lot of men seem to love ladies that are more endowed.
If there is excess supply of one this, people will just want what is rarer and that is just a law of the universe.
As for Lupita, she has been recognized as a most beautiful woman not only because of her looks but because of how she caries herself and what she has achieved. For example I have never heard of the ladies you have mentioned maybe I have seen them but I don't know them but Lupita is a household name. She has won an Oscar, champions for conservation of elephants, has been interviewed in the most popular talk shows in the US(Ellen etc), her dressing options have been discussed so much in Hollywood and has graced the cover of Vogue magazine 3 times which is a feat very many celebrities even American ones have not achieved !! Her speech at the Oscar's has words that have been echoed by so many people. I will quote the last words 'When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid. Thank you.'
She has won an Oscar. How many Africans have an Oscar on their belt? Even for the entire black race there are so few winners. That is what makes her great. She has a brilliant and very radiant personality that makes her look very sexy. Just listen to one of her interviews and you will know why.
With regards to the Miss World events. I believe it is next to impossible for a light skin African lady to win the title. Why? Because to be honest Portericans and the Latinos would look more beautiful than a light skinned African model. The dark shade also represents authenticity since we are a black race and hence the originality of Africa is represented. You are quite correct. However the names i mentioned like Somali's Iman and Nigeria's Genevieve Nnaji, am surprised you don't know them, they are very famous. They might not have won oscars, the former is the best supermodel from Africa while Genevieve Nnaji is a legend in the Nigerian movie industry. Lupitia is a Kenyan Mexican, so it is easier for her to win an oscar considering her schooling in America and starring in American movies. We have Nigerians for instance who have won all manners of world awards but most of them were not born in Nigeria. Both Genevieve and Iman were born in Africa and had only African citizenship, they are far richer than Lupita and even older yet still more beautiful. They are famous in their own ways. Lupita is just opportuned. No doubt, Lupita has self carriage and great virtues, but facially let's be honest, she is not the best definition of black African beauty. See Iman and Genevieve below and Lupita.

MtuMsuper: Thanks for the good intro on the peoples of Nigeria. Most Nigerians i have met are igbo. I have ever met only 1 hausa. Several Yoruba people as well and i have a very good Berom friend. We Africans are like that, we like to know about the culture and identity of people who look like us. Unlike many Africans though, i don't have some toxic ethnicity aka tribalism. Which brings me to my point : its plain foolhardy to say ethnic sentiments did not influence voting patterns in Nigeria. They always do. That's why someone like Salva Kiir(an ethnic Dinka) in South Sudan cannot get votes from a majority Nuer area whose favorite son is his arch nemesis Riek Machar. Its why the northern Ugandan tribes will never put their eggs into Museveni's basket : the resentment from the civil war in which a northern leadership was ousted by museveni still simmers to to this day. It's also why Raila in Kenya cannot get votes from Central Kenya, or Uhuru from luo dominated former nyanza province. The tribesmen of GEJ equally voted overwhelmingly for him, as did other nationalities in the Nigerian SS and SE. There is no doubt that ethnicity and political affiliation are closely related in Africa. Even our dear neighbours ,Tanzania ,had an election in which there was an overwhelming support from the Kilimanjaro tribes such as the chagga, for the opposition party Chadema: the vast majority of opposition Chadema legislators come from the Mt Kilimanjaro region. These things aren't coincidences. Its important to study these correlations in order to understand the political realities of a realm. Heck, even in the USA, whites voted for Trump irrespective of their donkeyness or elephantness. Blacks overwhelmingly gave Hillary Clinton their votes. We, all of us Africans, have still not learnt the fine art of managing the fact of ethnicity. Instead, we use it negatively. What a shame. U are very correct. You have said it all. |

I can actually speak and write in German, does that make me "germanified"(for lack of a better word)? That kenyan singer, who isn't my cup of tea btw, sang for market capture purposes? Kapish? Yemi Alade and Sauti sol sang together in both pidgin and swahili (representing both cultures). However, Akothee is a Kenyan lady not known by most Nigerians but she sang in Nigerian pidgin. iblawi: So why claim the election was based on tribal stuff? Jonathan won the whole of South West and even some northern states in 2011.
We all know he lost NE because of the way he handle boko haram issue, plus the fact that buhari has lot of supporters from that region too. He also lost South West because of his incompetence.
Jonathan won the South South because he was from there and he also won South East because the Igbos benefitted a lot from his regime. Don't mind that ignorant guy. Goodluck won 5 out of the 6 states in North-central and the FCT in 2011, even with his performance which most people complained of, Goodluck still won Plateau and Nasarawa states in 2015. He also won Taraba in 2015 too. Most northern minorities supported GEJ so much. This proves that politics in Nigeria is not always tribal or religious even though we know that both factors play significant roles. |

pazienza: I don't care about whatever place you crawled out from or where you are from. If your people are comfortable with Nigeria, that's your cup of tea, and has absolutely nothing to do with the Igbo desire for self determination and push for independence.
Nobody claimed Igbos are saints or devil here. I am only laying out the true conditions of things for Africans. Stop quoting me out of context. Also tell your Yoruba "bandwagoners" here to stop presenting Yorubacentric views of things here and try to pass them off as facts. I would have stayed off this thread and allowed you lots to continue deceiving yourselves, if not because of the Yoruba attempt here to present Yoruba as the second most populous ethnic group in Nigeria.
As for your minority nonsense drivel. Well, IBB( Gwari), Gowon( Angas), GEJ( Ogbia) were both minorities presidents of Nigeria, and I don't see how they were any better. So hillarious that we never hear or see Igbo political and traditional leaders canvass for seccesion. What about the top igbo business men, elites, clerics and elderstatesmen? Why don't we ever hear them advocate for Biafra or seccession? This is quite puzzling i must say. The reason why Nigerians will never take agitatitions from some misguided youths and street urchins any serious. I interract on daily basis with educated and enlightened Igbo minds, i never hear them talk about Biafra or seccesion or even mention it. Chukwu okike Obimo indeed. |

PissedYagami: IanSweets the thing about looks are based on opinion. Like Africans tend to worship the the lighter skin, that is why you find light skinned women in music videos. Thank God in Kenya very few people care about the skin tone. There is no standard measurement for beauty or ugliness. Just opinions and I try to avoid that isht as much as I can, coz it adds no value and we can do nothing about it, thats nature. I am sure we can get ugly and beautiful people anywhere in the world. Every country has its share of extremes while most people to be honest are just average looking anywhere in the world. I know in Africa, Lupita would not stand a chance because of self hate of the black skin by Africans, and Indians and Filipinos and other people of colour. But in 2014, People named her as the most beautiful woman alive. Same league as Angelina Jolie etc See, opinions. First African to make it to the list. I am sure they were not blind. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People_%28magazine%29 I also went out of the way to google African countries with the most beautiful women. And this was what google gave me. Some Ghanaian site. But then again it is the opinion. It really does not matter. I am sure there are other opinions. Ask more about our culture and stuff and I will gladly help you. And I am glad you are nicer, I like you more this year Iansweets. This looks thing makes me look gay, btw I respect the LGBT. You are not far from the truth. Lighter skinned people tend to be more adored by people in tropical areas. With time i think this trend will change cos take US for instance, many dark skinned people have proven that dark skin can be equally beautiful when well maintained. But a lot of Africans also appreciate dark skinned people or don't you think? The only black african women to win the miss world and the miss universe titles from Nigeria and Angola werr not light skinned, they were dark to medium chocolate skinned and they were crowned in their respective countries before they went to represent their own countries at the world level. I dont know about Kenya but the current titles of the Miss Nigeria is not held by a light skinned lady. As for Lupitia i admire her but i think there are dark skinned African and African-american ladies who look better than her, e.g Somalia's Iman, Nigeria's Genevieve Nnaji and many others. |
