ActivateKruger: Even before the evaluation of the Naira. The South African government had 3 times the budget of the Nigerian federal government. So that roughly translates to 9 times the amount the SA government spends per capita in comparison to Nigeria.
So the Defence budget is $4 billion (which is too small) but remember that we have hundreds of IFVs and hundreds of IPCs to maintain, more helicopters than any SSA military. We have frigates and subs which are not really poor-man's toys, military facilities, and very skilled personnel in especially in Military Health, Engineering (army, airforce and naval) and management.... So don't expect weapons acquisition at that little budget, it's already used up. Stop saying rubbish? |

14: To make it simpler to him, SA spend $30bn on education every year, which is bigger than the entire nigerian budget. That money alone, south africa only spend it on education. Congrats, more than Nigerian budget after several devaluation of the Naira. Besides the fact that you have it on budget doesn't mean you spend it. South African military budget is over $4 billion but nothing is moving still in you military of less than 40,000 army. Conclusion, budgeting is different from actually amount spent. |

Many didn't know we ordered 12 MI35 until about 2 months ago but we will still be getting about 3 this year. |

MikeCZA: I'm kinda iffy whether Thunder and the new P18N vessel should be classified as war fighting vessels rather than patrol vessels such as the South African navy Warrior class strike vessels which have been converted to OPVs.
With limited defensive or offensive capabilities at the conventional warfare level. Do you have full info on the specification of those vessels? No. People only comment based on what they think it has. Your warrior class are in the class of NNS Ayam or NNS Ekpe not NNS thunder or P18N. |

patches689: Its just the way the Russians fight.
It works for them, no one can deny Russian firepower - just look at the ammount of MRLS and artillery attached to a division in comparison to a NATO one.
But in terms of precision and efficiency, as well as safety and minimization of collateral damage, no one comes close to the major NATO members. Libya says a lot. |

Go look at newly built up areas in ibadan and you will know you are far behind. Ibadan is a major city by any standard and the state still add more value to Nigerian economy than any south east state. It is really funny when people compare old built up area in ibadan to the best in south east. It simple means we are far ahead of you. |

Henry240: YES & NO.
However we do not have a choice. It would be folly to also say that the fight against the insurgency is in extra-time. With attacks in Tunisia, Algeria, Mali, Ivory Coast, Burkina-Faso, Egypt, Libya, Niger, Chad and Cameroun. Nothing is in extra-time.
We need those Super Tucano air crafts. Our Alpha-Jets are no good, ordinarily they should be transfered to the museum(not a joke), used to create an Air Force Acrobatics Team or sold off to private individuals.
Let them say whatever they want to say, fact we cannot expel is the fact that the A-29 Super Tucano is the world's best COIN aircraft.
The JF-17 is a nice plane, but it isn't a COIN based aircraft. We have roles for the JF-17, Super Tucano and Super Mushak in our air force.
On long haul flights, the JF-17 has to carry 2 fuel drops, with 7 hard-points that leaves us with only 5 hard-points, when we take out the wing-tips which are the exclusive reserve of AAMs, we are left with only 3 hard-points.
The Super Tucano on the other hand is Turbo-prop (far less fuel consumption than a jet engine), dedicated COIN air craft and can provide up to 5 hours of loiter time. Well analysed Two internal guns With endurance of 8 hours. Can carry wide range of weapons just like many other fighter jet AAM, ASM, PGM, cluster bombs etc. What else can 1 ask from a low cost fighter dedicated for COIN. It is actually the best for choice for Nigeria and other African countries currently. |

Henry240: I'd like to add, the JF-17 numbers are probably low because they may be for trial purposes. The JF-17 is an untested Fighter, we would need to see that they meet NAF requirements. even Pakistan bought helicopters from China for trial purpose. |

Pakistanilad: What happened to the Nigerian JF17 deal did they cancel it after taking land back from Boko Haram? Not yet bros. Budget was passed less than 2 weeks ago and I believe it was included in the budget. Only three was budgeted though because of the zero based budgeting (only the amount that can be received this year is included). Although, if the sanction is lifted we might not buy as much as 24 which was previously planned. |

patches689: You cant defeat insurgents if you cannot hit their training and re-supply bases - and the PKK have all their logistical support in Iraq and Syria.
Until the Turks can hit the PKK support networks they will never defeat them.
This is the very reason South Africa would raid Southern Angola. Gone were those years patches, is just like saying Japan will invade China or south Korea. |
