I shed tears for my country. The problem is likely traceable to many things, but the root cause is failure of leadership. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be improving. Rather, it seems to be getting worse. God help Nigeria

I knew those loans had "K-Leg" when I saw that they kept quiet about interest rates and repayment terms. The loans are not different from any other loan. Well, it's definitely not worth it for me then.
I understand Oceanic is also doing the same thing. I'll find out and post details ASAP

@Gangsta101, I suggest you look for Esmertec Jbed. It's a java platform for Windows mobile which is compatible with more applications. I use HTC Touch and that's the one I have on my phone. I can use Umobile conveniently.

I've been seeing a lot about education loans from Bank PHB and Skye Bank. Has anyone ever applied for or got these loans? What are the interest rates and the payback terms? I notice both banks are silent on the interest rates. Anyone with relevant info should please post

Wow!! So this thread don start? And I see My friend LawyerChap (is a great man) in the house already doing his thing. I've not watched this show at all, just about getting into the flow. I see the Naija girl is not that popular, I hope that changes o. Anyway, lemme go tune in for the first time , I'll be back.

Can you imagine, I didn't know this thread was still on. Must have missed the notifications. I was the last to arrive at the scene as LawyerChap said, but I didn't regret it in anyway. Such a lively group of fellows, I wish I had been there earlier. I could swear I would not have recognized anyone of these guys if i had met them on the road. I hope we do this again, with more people , soon.

Has anyone heard the Naija version?
It has stuff like "Ebute meta, meta, meta, eh eh eh , " etc.

Heard it on radio some time ago. Olisa usually plays both Rihanna's version and the Naija version. It's quite tight but funny. Abeg, anyone who has it should share it with me.
Autos / Re: Is Driving With A/C On The Highway Ok? by Icon(m): 10:36pm On Jun 25, 2007
Exactly! If AC was not meant to be used, why was it put in the car in the first place? Of course it will definitely stress the engine, but don't you think that was put into consideration before the car was manufactured? Do you know the amount of other things that stress the engine in your car? I think it's up to you to decide if you want AC or not.

Music/Radio / Re: West African Idols: Season 1 (2007) by Icon(m): 11:15pm On Jun 08, 2007
Men, I never knew the thread was getting more and more lively. Something must have gone wrong with my notifications, I didn't even see LawyerChap's reply to my post.
Anyway, Lawyerchap, I've read the arguments so far. I think we agree on some things but disagree on others. I agree Timi has flaws and I agree Omawumi is versatile. I agree Timi might not be able to do justice to as many songs as Omawumi can do. I initially was undecided about my final choice until a few days to the end. I knew I had to choose someone, and I didn't want to make a choice I would regret. Honestly, if it was Jodie vs Timi, I would have been more than confused, because I was biased towards Jodie from day one. Nevertheless, I chose Timi due to the following reasons.
[li]Most Number of impressions: Timi consistently had the best performance of the night a couple of times. His performance became something to look forward to. Omawumi just tagged along until Jodie left. Her first real impressive performance which can be tagged "Performance of the night" was "I will survive". [/li]
[li]Connection with the audience: Timi can connect with the audience. Timi has a way of demonstrating the song with his every expression such that you actually think he went through the story of the song. Omawumi does not do that as much as Timi. Her versatility here did not help matters. [/li]
[li]Creativity: Timi proved his creative abilities a couple of times. (1)The short mic stand he used for "don't let the sun go down on me" (2)The knee slide in the same song (3)The lady he pulled up during the "Stuck on you" (4)His wild dance in front of the judges during his "faith". Omawumi showed creativity only once. Her start off position during "I bruise easily. Some would argue about her performances during "I will survive" and "Ekwe" but they weren't as unique as what Timi did. They could have been done by anyone else singing the same song[/li]
True, Timi went off beat a couple of times, but Omawumi went off key a lot. Both are very bad mistakes for any artist and I won't argue about which is worse. They both messed up with that.
Now let's talk about "producer's choice". If I were a Sony/BMG producer and I were to choose, I would still have chosen Timi, because of the points above. I would choose someone who will connect with the crowd (= addicted fans), someone who is creative ( = commited viewers), someone who has been in people's minds as one of the best (arguably the best) right from the top 10 performance and not just coming into the limelight during the later half of the performances like Omawumi did (= longer lasting impression). Also, for Omawumi, I don't remember all her performances, for Timi, I remember his every song which still points at Longer Lasting Impression. All these equals to CD sales, and that what every music producer wants. To me, that's a complete package.
Now let's talk about flaws.
Going off beat- that's easily taken care of in the studios.
Diction- A good finishing school will take care of that
Looks - He's already looking much better than he did in the auditions.
I wasn't so much Timi's fan initially. I was Jodie's and after she left, I refused to have any favorites. If you followed my blog, you'll discover that I was unbiased all through and didn't show my choice for the title until after the results came out. I chose Timi due to the points mentioned above.
Cheers Man. Let's keep keeping it real.

So Timi now has a Fan's club? That's a very good initiative. It'll help to keep him in the news and keep his fan base alive. Netimah, I have to congratulate you guys. Good initiative. I'm contacting Fred right away.

Wow, Thabs, that was quite breath-taking. You do know your Idols history. Have never followed American Idols myself. I think most of your points are valid. Why is it that it's after the show is over that this thread starts getting interesting? Anyway, I've really enjoyed all our contributions so far and I like the fact we're doing it without hating on anyone. Cheers.

myro:

omawumi is a concieted, arrogant jackass who needs a reality check. WE MAKE YOU GREAT b****h. I'm glad Timi won
That was uncalled for. It's way out of line.
lawyerchap:

Here is an immensely talented artiste with a clearly demonstrated ability to perform music from any genre yet we know for a fact that west africans don't want her "stuff"?
Lawyerchap, I disagree with you again here. She has no "clearly demonstrated ability to perform from any genre". She bit off more than she could chew a couple of times. There are some songs you shouldn't attempt to do "Live" or without backup singers. An example is "I can't live without you baby" by MJB. Another one was the Bob Marley Song. The third one is Christina's "Ain't no other man". She didn't demonstrate any ability here. The delivery was poor. She went off key during the rap in the Bob Marley song. Christina's song was too fast for her and she was barely audible. MJB's song, no comments. For me, these were wrong choices and if she selected them just so she could prove her versatility, then she made a mistake. If she were to record those songs in the studio, it would probably have sounded better. If I were a producer picking based on song choices, those choices would automatically have put me off. The impression she intended wasn't created.
Timi's song choices were mostly good choices which brought out the best in his voice. That's what the competition was all about. Not choosing songs and trying to force yourself to sing them. It's all about making brief impressions. Of course there were people who could sing lots better than the two of them , so it's not so much about the singing. It's about what impression you can create within a short time. That's one thing Timi knew how to do, and Omawumi couldn't do as well as Timi.
Music/Radio / Re: West African Idols: Season 1 (2007) by Icon(m): 10:10am On Jun 02, 2007
Emotional connection, exactly. That's one thing i forgot to add. Timi has always had it in him to connect with the audience. He practically "acts" the song and you feel like he's singing it to you. Omawumi, No! Omawumi does not appeal to people's emotions the way Timi does. Her strengths lie more in fast songs which allow her to move her body and dance up and down. She probably should have stuck to that. Another that didn't work for me was her attempts at doing every genre possible even when it wasn't in her to do those genres.

Come to think of it, Omawumi's single was actually quite technical than Timi's and she probably sang it better, but it's not just about the singing. It's about delivery and connection. After the show, I could vividly remember the words and melody of Timi's song while I couldn't even remember Omawumi's. It's just the ability to connect to the audience. Plain simple.

One more thing, abeg Timi will be a lot better than TuFace. Tu What Come on, we can do better than that!
Music/Radio / Re: West African Idols: Season 1 (2007) by Icon(m): 6:04am On Jun 02, 2007
Hmmmm, LawyerChap, I was beginning to think you wouldn't show up. I agree with most of the points you made but I need to bring some other things to your notice. The Idols competition has been about brief impressions, and not what you really know how to do. There are people in the top 24 (Jarry, Ibitoru, Lara, David) and even in the top 10 (Jodie, Joan) who have better voices than Omawumi (and even Timi). In addition, some of those people will definitely sell albums more than any of them had they been the idol, and if it was SONY/BMG's choice, they would have chosen them over both Timi and Omawumi. But then what would be the use of the Idols show?
I believe the results were determined by consistency and who made the first impressions (as we know first impressions last longest - that's why Jodie won't be forgotten in a hurry). If Omawumi had started getting standing ovations earlier, she would probably have been the idol, but she had to wait until about 3 weeks to the finals before she started doing really well (remember she used to go off-key a lot during earlier performances). Note, Timi also did not get standing ovations from the start, he only started in the Top 8 but he did this earlier than Omawumi and he kept at it, and that helped him.

Sentiments also came into the voting process. I've heard views from lots of people and majority see Timi as a humble guy who would keep his sanity and not go wayward, however for Omawumi, people think it would have been a different story. If she had won, nobody would have recognized her in 6 months. She would have gone totally out of hand and we might soon be hearing scandalous stories. I believe that's why Dede warned her not to get carried away and gave them the advice he did when he was giving them his final words. (Omawumi did not even listen here, she was laughing and gisting with Mike Majik all through.)

Anyway, there are many schools of thought about the whole process. Timi does have flaws, but he won due to consistency and I'm glad he did because he deserved it the most.
Food / Re: How Do You Prepare Ikokore Or Ifokore? by Icon(m): 8:42pm On Jun 01, 2007
Please make sure it has enough "Orisirisi". Pieces of meat, fish, ponmo, crayfish , all these are what makes it very tasty. Lack of these and the food will not make sense to new "eaters".

Femex:

Timi won and deservedly so, he's a great singer and electric on stage. Take nothing away from Omawumi, she definitely won't be forgoten in a hurry. The Ekwe song she did, brilliant, absolutely briilliant perfomance. Folks, who is the original singer that song Ekwe, please help me out
Femex, the original singer of Ekwe is Onyeka Onwenu.
BTW, Anyone knows where LawyerChap is? It's unusual of him to keep quiet like this. LAWYERCHAP!!!! Where Art Thou
