Timi just needs a crash program with a finishing school. He'll be OK. I'm surprised at how people still think Omawumi deserved it more than Timi. Omawumi has not been consistent (I guess some will call it versatility), that's why she'll sing Raggae, Rap, Old school and everything together. How many artists in the world can do this and still hit? It's not possible. Timi is consistent with his style, he has sang the same style from start till end. Also, Timi is someone you'll want to listen to again and again. Can't say the same for Omawumi. Just before the show, all their previous performances were played. You should have seen the crowd at planet one. They sang every performance with Timi (All except "Just give me the night" and "Oruka"wink. The only songs that thrilled the crowd from Omawumi were "Ekwe" and "I will survive".
Timi will be fine, I know that.

I'm using my phone 2post so i can't scroll up but d guy that replied my last post are u kidding me. Oma had only one bad performance that is her mary blige but like u said timihas had about 3bad performances. Diverse vocal strength? Are u kidding? Timi all through d competition has picked songs that fitted his rough gruff voice but oma has been the person taking risks n choosing ambitious tasks and it has consistently said off for her. Its called strategy. She sang just enough 2keep her in d competition till d final stages and then she brought out the big guns. Thats where eric got it wrong. He brought out his aces too early and we say through his adorability 2quickly n saw his average talent so we sent him home. The guy talkin about make up take a chill pill. Its showbiz. Its all about glamour. Half of d clothes u see on d runways are not commercially feasible or even practical. Its showbiz. Its meant 2be exaggerated. Or d make up used on d runway. Its delibrately exaggerated. Timi will not make a fitting idol. At least not over oma. Not in a million years. And all d judges know it. U can see it just the way we all knew they all wanted jodie to win.The guy who talked about money stop being a hypocrite. Its all about d money and fame.Would u not think it pretentious if they had said oma we want u to win so u can use your fame and fortune to achieve world peace. Seriouly. Its the money 4them. Its the love of music 4 her. don't judge her by what her peeps said ok.The competition is messed up , we lost some good people along d way. But we can make it right. Finals should av been oma, jodie, jarry d ghana boy and joan. Period. Lets make it all worthwile. Vote oma. She is more talented n stands a better chance of breaking it internationally. Timi sings 1 genre of songs. Oma could easily sing pop rock or r and b which r d genres that will be acceptable world wide. N 4 d love of God there was absolutely nothing wrong with omas bob marley and c. Aguilera. Or are we forgetting these are amateurs? My people. She nailed both songs. N only jodie would av been able 2 come close. Timi not in a million years
Well, Chukky, you need to understand some things. Bob Marley can never in his life sound like R Kelly, Neither can Joe sound like Shaggy. They'll not even try. That's where knowing your strengths and limits, and staying within them comes into play. Omawumi tries to sound like to many people, and it was all to her undoing. You talk about versatility, but can you hear her voice on the radio and know it's her? Not at all. She's used a different voice for each of her songs, it's difficult to point out a unique voice. That might be good, but then not in a competition where you're still trying to get people to like you for who you are and what you sing. I'll pick Timi over Omawumi any day and I'm glad he won. If you watch the performances tomorrow, you'll agree with me.
Note: I'm not badmouthing Oma, she's very good in her own right but she was second best in the Top 2. that's why she didn't win.

All Timi Lovers, He won. If you see the performances, you'll know Omawumi is not in Timi's class. Timi deserved the title, and he got it!

Timi is good but seriously we all know omawummi is better. she's a fitting representative for the first african idol. Timi can't cut it internationally, and thats not because of his diction or his self esteem, we talking total package. and omawunmi is total package.and omawunmi having a better package doesnt even mean we have to trade off on talent, no!! we don't because omawunmi is obviously even better talentwise than timi.

lovability---oma
adorability- oma
voice range- oma
performance- oma
confidence- oma
talent- oma
diverse vocal skills for all genres- oma
beauty and grooming-oma
deep ruff luther vandrossy voice-timi

so what are we talking about.

That looks biased. You need to take everything into consideration. How have they both performed from inception till now? Omawumi's had only about 3 good performances. The rest have just been average. Timi has had only about 3 bad performances, the rest have been very good.
Lovability - Who says Timi is not lovable? You need to visit planet one and see how the audience shouts for him.
Voice Range - Frankly, you can't compare a male voice range to a female one. But u knew that already didn't you?
Performance - Her again Timi over Oma. How many shows of creativity has Omawumi done? Timi has a number of them. His "Stuck on you", "Don't let the sun go down on me", "Faith" have all been great performances. His performances have always been spectacular. Oma has just one. Her "I bruise easily" performance.
Talent - Once again, you can't judge by genres here. Oma didn't do the Raggae song too well. She went off key several times during the rap. Note, timi has never gone off key. The Christina song too wasn't too good a choice. It left her all breathless and inaudible.
Beauty and Grooming - Omawumi does look better than Timi. You're right there
Deep ruff Luther Vandrossy voice - I see you've got a sense of humour LOL.
This is not to say Timi has not shortcomings, but pls vote wisely. I think Timi deserves it more because he has put in more into this competition than Omawumi. Enough said.

Timiiiii, Hmmm? he is good, but i have probem with his over exaggeration.
Please could you explain what u mean by "over exaggeration"?
Also, Omawumi has not always been outstanding. She only started about 3 weeks ago while Timi has always been outstanding. If you'll judge based on every performance they've done so far, I'll take Timi over Omawumi. I'm not saying she's not good, but Timi is a better and more creative performer.
Music/Radio / Re: West African Idols: Season 1 (2007) by Icon(m): 2:37pm On May 24, 2007
Serious I thought Blake was going to win! As per WA Idols, Timi's gonna win, hopefully. I believe he has a bigger and unified fan base, as against Omawumi. And Idols is all about fan base.
Music/Radio / Re: West African Idols: Season 1 (2007) by Icon(m): 7:04pm On May 23, 2007
hmmmmm, lots and lots of interesting views. I never knew this thread could get so busy, but then with the Idols final in sight, why won't it?

I'll vote for Timi for the following reasons:
Timi has been consistent. Omawumi has not.
Timi has received the highest number of standing ovations. More than 50% of his performances have been outstanding. Omawumi has only done this about 3 times.
Timi has shown stage creativity thrice. (His knee slide move during his "don't let the sun go down on me", his ending during the "Stuck on you" and his wild dance during George Michael's "Faith"wink, Omawumi has done this once (her startoff position during "I bruise easily).
If Timi releases a CD today, I'll buy it but for Omawumi, I'll listen to one or two tracks before buying.

Granted, Timi does have issues with self consciousness when talking, but this does not come into play when he's singing. As per his diction, that's nothing a good finishing school can't take care of. If we were voting for diction, Temitayo would be the best. Anyway, I'm not just voting based on their last performances. I'm voting based on all impressions from their auditions to Top 24 and top 10,9,8,7,6,5,4 and top 3. Those are my thoughts. You might think differently

Music/Radio / Re: West African Idols: Season 1 (2007) by Icon(m): 3:19pm On May 17, 2007
@ LawyerChap, I don't totally agree with you on the analysis of Timi. I just watched the performances and I agree Timi messed up with that no 2 song but men, It's a George Benson Song! Those songs ain't easy. Also, last week, Timi did great in both performances so it's not a question of 2 songs being too much for him. While I agree with you on his absolute lack of self confidence and his self consciousness during his interviews, that's not something that can't be changed. During his performance in the top 24, he was much better and more vocal in his replies to Nana and Dede's comments. Let's see as events roll out, and we'll know for sure

Temitayo's relatively average! We don't need such a voice representing West Africa. I do agree she has the confidence, but the competition is first a singing competition before any other thing. Right now, Omawumi is looking like she's stepping into Jodie's shoes. Her "I bruise easily" performance was the best I've seen her so far. It seems the producers studied the contestants' usual choices and discovered that Omawumi like fast songs and so decided to give her slow ones to see how she would perform. It worked the other way for Timi as he was given fast songs. Eric just messed up big time. I still believe he has a great voice , but he either does not have the required skill or he fails to use it well. I hope he's learnt his lesson.

bonini:

Just to correct you there Double N, there were actually 2 non Nigerians in the top 10, Timi and Jerrilyn.
You meant Ernest? Ernest was the Ghanian guy who auditioned in Accra. Timi is from Bayelsa. Meanwhile, I don't think Jarry looked too bad - but I agree with you that looks do count. Otherwise why would Eric scale through ahead of Jarry and David? Ibitoru also had a great voice but looks were not too great.
Music/Radio / Re: West African Idols: Season 1 (2007) by Icon(m): 11:44pm On May 14, 2007
Yes, Eric is out. Personally, I don't think he deserved leaving just yet. He still did better than Temitayo - and is a better overall package than her. Although, Eric hesitates a little too much for me. He has so much potential in that voice if he just lets go but somehow, he refuses.
Double N:

I have no Idea what the organisers where hoping to achieve by calling it West African Idols, when it is very evident that most of the contenstants are fro m Nigeria and to imagine that only one non-Nigerian was present in the top ten!Why not just call the show Nigerian Idol. The judges chosen are not really the best West Africa has to offer can u imagine that DEDE has not released even a single Album in his entire Life! The selection process in the auditioning and Top 24 stages was very appalling, there was a guy from Ghana called Jarry who sang with more passion than any of the contestants and yet he was voted off, even a girl called Sintiki who sang one off Alicia Keys songs after being selected in the audition was nowhere to be seen in the top 24.As i would always say we have to get rid of our Nigerian Factor when we do things!

Men, I feel you for real. Jarry was good - too good. He was my favourite in group 2, and I was pained when he didn't make it. David Desmond was another good one. Great flexible and dynamic voice. I initially thought it would be David and Jarry but instead we got Jerilyn and Eric. I heard Syntyche decided on her own that she didn't want to continue, due to school and other stuff. Although the selection of top 24 from top 80 not transparent. No one knows the processes they followed. 80 were chosen from the auditions but we saw just 24 @ planet one. There were so many good singers in the auditions. The guy who sang "Kiss from a rose" in the Ghana auditions, I don't know what happened to him.
thabs:

I believe Eric and Temitayo should not have lasted this long. His speech was nice and he seems a fairly likeable guy, he just never had the voice or true performance skills from day one. He was trying too hard to be like Timi when performing, but he never had the true passion that emanates from Timi when singing.

I don't fully agree with you there, I think Eric does have the voice. Go listen to his "End of the road" performance - his best performance so far. He just doesn't use that voice well. Temitayo's just trying, she's got no voice (compared to the others).
As per Timi, he messed up big time. But then, i think the producers really wanted to test him. If you notice, Timi has always run away from fast songs, he usually does slow ballads in which his performance and voice skills can come out. So I guess the producers wanted to break that. His 1st one was OK but the 2nd one was woeful.
I see Timi and Omawumi making it to the finals. I hope Omawumi really tries her best, then we'll have some real competition. It'll be nice to be confused about who to vote for.

@LawyerChap. Great Job. I agree with most of your analysis. They all performed better in their second songs. I actually noticed some inconsistency in Timi's ending but I don't know the song too well, so I let it pass. So he went off-beat again? The guy needs to be caned. Now there's no real competition for him he should not in anyway let down his guard. Omawumi totally annoyed me when she took that Mary J's song. I mean what on earth was she thinking? Why the thick voice? Mary J don't sound half like that. She also missed a lot of notes. I was so annoyed maybe because when Mike majic announced the song, I had thought to myself "Now that Jodie is gone, Omawumi is the only one who can do that song well" and she so proved me wrong. It was the worst performance of the night but she was saved with that second performance. Jerrilyn actually surprised me with that second song. She's got a good voice (sentiments aside) and she used it well in that song. My guess is she was just not ready for Idols yet. Maybe if she tries again next year, she would have learnt better voice control and would stand a better chance to actually win without sentiments. Temitayo's performances were just there. No magic, no wow moments, too average. Eric just messed up that "Kiss from a rose". He was too dry. He didn't put life into that song. Is it just me or is Eric shy or lacks confidence? Otherwise why didn't he express himself well enough? Why did he hesitate to sing and use that voice? When it was time for the bridge, he actually looked like he was going to drive it home, but he seemed to hesitate and then he lost his bearing. He started the bridge way behind the instrumental and in the process lost the magic behind that "Aaaaaaaaaave beeeeeeeeeen , kissed by a rose from the grave" (I believe someone knows what I'm talking about). I finally gave up on him there and then. His second song had more spirit, but it seems as if Eric hesitates before singing some parts and then the magic moments are gone. I don't know, he probably needs more confidence. He actually has a good voice (apparent from his "End of the road" performance) and he could even do than Timi if he puts that voice to good use. Eric Wake up!!! You might not survive next week if you continue this way!!
Well my review of the top 5 is available on my blog [here]. Everyone's invited to read. The competition's getting hotter. I hope we get some surprises before the end.

This will be my last post as Idols West Africa is no longer worth following. Ask yourself who’s West Africa’s Top 5? Eric, Jerrilyn, Temitayo, Timi and Omawumi? The mediocre talents are more than the recording contract-worthy. And with the current voting patterns, Omawumi and Timi may just also be on the way out. So why bother?

Lawyerchap, I so feel you on that one. I almost refused to update my blog with the results. It'll be so pathetic if all West Africa can produce as it's best performer will be Jerilyn, or Temitayo , or Eric. All the great talents - Lara George, Ibitoru, David Desmond, Jarry dropped during the top 24. (I still go to the site to listen to David and Jarry's performances - great stuff) Other talents - Uche, Mercy who scaled through dropped during the top 10. Who do we have left? Voiceless individuals who just happen to begetting more votes than others. It's quite disheartening.
I've been so pained for Jodie since yesterday. I didn't watch the results too, I was at work. But a friend called me to break the bad news and several people sent me texts. That just spoilt the rest of the day for me. I wonder who is voting, and who is not.
