The American black kids can barely keep up with the system, you now want to bring ir for Nigerian kids. Supernerd, it's like you are living in some parallel universe Haha haha Thank you my sister. And Is Nigeria immune to a concept that worked for blacks like her kids?? Are you saying Nigerian kids can't adapt? So because this is Nigeria it won't just work? abi naa.... Ok let's say you agree it is not a perfect system and let's say it works for all the children but one. Do we send that one away from our football team?(even if he is about the best on the pitch) |

TheSuperNerd: Ben Carson was the worst Olodo Rabata child you would find in his area in those days.... abi you wanna argue that one too? you think it is exaggerated how poor and dull he was before he picked up??
And yes The Coach Carter concept will work for evey child... if it could work for blacks in the united states in slum areas and regions known for drugs and violence and also with black kids so dull all they knew was booze and sex at such tender age and also again with kids who initially had direction in life as all they knew was the robbery and death they see on the streets daily...... then yes it will work for all children.... Haha haha. Life has taught me there is no perfect system. Understand that now and thank me later. And wake up we are talking about Nigeria. |

komekn: The glory of possible football career can derail the most calm, collected and focused minds.
When you add that to youth and I mean really young kids. A young kids thinks when he is in the academy or at a team that he will be the next Ronaldo. Reality check that possibility is very slim indeed.
However, child does not know that or believe it. As a result no longer interested or motivated to study and as a consequence starts to TOTALLY underachieve at school.
And if the football doesn't happen they may fall in to crime, drugs, depression and even suicide.
I have witnessed this over the last 10 years multiple times. It is really Heart breaking for the kids and even for me to see.
So I say you can have both and if I have to use the carrot and stick to motivate that boy. I will do it unapologetically 100%. Better safe than very very sorry. Nobody is saying footballers should not go to school. Should a child be stopped from featuring for our youth teams because he cannot pass an academic test? Just a simple answer will do. |

TheSuperNerd: But I have said a few times here that the movie is actual reality.... why do you deliberately choose to ignore that?
And you obviously don't believe it will work... you doubt the IQs of kids in public schools... okay naa... easy to see why this dragged on...
You believe there are Olodo rabatas that cannot be made sound in their academics....
Ever heard of Ben Carson? OK wait let me even view it from another angle. You think that coach carter theory can work for every child? You are even citing Ben Carson. Come-on my man. |

TheSuperNerd: Hahahahahahahahaha..... Chief Icon4s
I have teaching experience with kids... I find Joy in educating the next generation despite my academic schedules, scholarship studies and a couple of other engagements.....
It is true that no child's IQ is the same as another and that every child cannot learn at the same pace.... but it is generally established that no child is dull. You speak of dragging the whole class back... that is because you are looking at the Nigerian approach to things. We just teach everybody and wanna walk away without noticing who and who is not actually following and who needs a different approach.
The Coach Carter Concept and the approach used in "Like Stars on Earth" on that outstanding Olodo rabata who became academically sound preaches Dynamism in the way we approach teaching our kids and ensuring they are not left behind... it takes dedication and Patience and also Keen Observation and not the usual "Hello Class, I hope u understand this" and class says "Yes Ma!!!" and the teacher says "Good, see you next class"
So you see I speak of a more dedicates approach to our youngsters.... and not the conventional teaching approach you see all over the country. We are talking reality you are talking about a movie you watched. Let me take you to an average public school in Lagos and come and apply that your coach carter concept. |

TheSuperNerd: Truth is I understand why he said so..... but also these are kids... we need their 100% attention and "open-heartedness"
If We deny them the expression of their talents which gives them a good amount of Joy... we may kill or reduce their desire for learning also. So we need to be careful... (but on another hand, some kids will be motivated if Sir Basco's words are used because they wanna return to their game but let's forget that route).
Having said that... we won't stop them from playing... but we would have them understand that they must do well in the classroom and on the field.... and that is by subtly showing them the benefits of both and naturally, they will come to embrace their talents in tandem with their books.
And Every Child will have the right approaches to ensure their progress in class and on field. You are saying we won't stop them from playing but he said 'they cannot play if they cannot pass'. That is exactly what I am against. I was a teacher for many years even before attending higher institution. I also taught in a public secondary school during NYSC. I know how we motivated children to learn. You may say no child is dull but I will say all children have different levels of Intelligence Quotient and so some learn faster than others. There is a limit to which you can push a slow child/children. You cannot draw the whole class back because you want this slow child to catch up. If you have taught you will really understand why I said some students are really "Olodo". Give them all you've got and they will still score "odo". Back to my point , no child should be stopped from playing football because he cannot pass an academic test. |

TheSuperNerd: No we don't... we find a way to meet his learning needs.... We become even more flexible in our approach to the child... we find out his best learning method be it audio, visual, or audiovisual and approach him from that angle... we find out how best he takes in info and we approach him from that route....
There is always a way to reach out to each child... what is needed is Dedication and Patience... no child is dull.
Go watch "Like Stars on earth"... it is true life story about one of the best Olodo Rabatas you will ever know....
P.S: I have always answered this question this way but una still dey ask am to try hook us abi? kolewerk! That your 'no we don't ' is the root of this argument since yesterday. Someone said 'if you cannot pass then you cannot play'. That aside. What do you think football academies are? Even the best of private schools in Nigeria do not go that length. When you cannot meet up they call the parents, advice the child should repeat or switch to another school. |

komekn: There is nothing wrong in being an educated footballer it's an advantage. A football career is very short at best so it's essential to be educated to increase your options before and after your football career.
In the NBA and NFL more than 50% of players have a university degree.
The academy education programmes in the UK are a joke prima. They do not prepare you for a career beyond football. The academic content is poor.
Finally footballers have a lot of time on thier hands so getting educated should be intrinsic to thier development. Money is not everything. To remain uneducated and sometimes ignorant is not wisdom. So what if a child does not do well academically, do we stop him from playing football? Or let me re-coin it. should academic pass mark be used to select players into our youth teams? |

bigblangston: Seyi Olofinjana was my senior in the university and our skippo, I think he studied chemical engineering and has bagged his masters before calling it quit with football to become an agent.
I think Darren Fletcher combined school with football when he was at united, i'm not typing this to justify bascovanveli because I don't think I agree with his school of thought to restrict talents for the sake of certificates but there are exceptions because you may not know what the future holds for an uneducated/half educated player. I couldn't combine football with academics that was why I left football when the sport was sucking my Cgpa, I was then planning on playing for julius Berger or Crown fc before I took a decision to quit football because it's not easy combining them Seyi Olofinjana finished from Lautech. B. Tech Chemical Engineering. Even if he bagged a masters degree it would have been when he was less active in the later part of his career. As u rightly said it is very difficult to combine professional football and academics. My father told me so decades back I later found out he was right. But I want Bascovanveli to list current players who have masters And PHD as he said. |

BascoVanVeli: Which kind of talk is this? When should they learn how to manage their time, when they are old men. Boss I am a young man and I can still relate to teenagers. U don't always go against the grain. I remember u making these same type of fuss about the 3-4-3 and months later even ur club has used it. U don't always have to be right, in fact we can't always be right. You do not put teenagers on a 24hrs routine. May be just for about 2-3 days. After that they will revolt. Understand this now and thank me later. And as to that 3-4-3 formation did I ever say no team should adopt it. I was only saying it is not typically suitable for a team like Nigeria. It was specific to Nigeria. I mentioned that clubs find it easier bc they spend more time together and there is enough room for post error adjustments. You remember that? |

My Dad (his elder brother) did not like it and stopped him from playing to focus on his education. You know how it was in those days. Perhaps, he could have become a superstar. Yes. Many parents/guardians stopped their boys from playing football. There were these two other boys that played for a local club in my area then called Hungary Lions by names Duru and Atine. Emma Amuneke was in that team. These two boys play pass Amuneke. Who amongst us here grew up in Ajegunle, Orile, Amukoko and environs in the 1980s you'll know those boys. They suffered similar fate as I did: Parental influence. Not to ridicule him but Emma Amuneke no sabi book so his parents just allow am focus for ball. Fit-again Afolabi Okiki resurfaces in Dubai
Former Sunshine Stars striker Afolabi Okiki has resurfaced in Dubai with SCORENigeria gathering that he is completing his rehabilitation there after undergoing a knee surgery.
Sources close to the big striker further informed SCORENigeria the player has been to Turkey apparently in search of a club.
He is also working with a new agent after Marcelo Houseman first took him to Argentina.
Okiki was one of the leading scorers in the NPFL last season with Sunshine Stars before he moved out to Argentina.
He will later try to join top Malay club Kelatan FA, but the move was aborted due to a knee injury he was nursing.
He will later return to Lagos quietly and then his knee was later operated in Dubai.

BascoVanVeli: Answer the question, what makes u special? Are u saying Okocha couldn't have achieved what u achieved even if he tried? School is all about focus, anyone who puts in the work will make it. If u want them to continue being olodos then u are just trying to keep them under u. This is what the colonials did in order to hold us back, we can't turn and do it on ourselves. We need to use football to educate the masses and bring Nigeria out of intellectual poverty. You asked me if I finished secondary school. I tell you I no even attend primary school. No be answer be that? And What makes me special is I am who I am. Talking about Okocha I never came across him when I used to play football. He didn't play in Lagos. Amuneke was my senior in the game but Taribo and I played for the same U12 team in Ajegunle under coach Ibe. At Navy town. My Dad practically dragged me out of football and set me on the academic path. I had to concentrate on my studies and that my football talent died. One of my friends that later went to play for Jigawa Golden stars by name Ify Onuora told me I was better than Tijani Babangida. Ify IMO too was better than Tijani Babagida. Taribo also confirmed this. Nigeria lost a football talent in me. Taribo, Okocha and Babangida went on to be part of the 1993 U20. Now back to Okocha. I can tell you that he could not have been able to achieve what I have achieved academically if he had combined it with football. Secondary school education is basic but tertiary education? Combined with professional football? Bros u have to chose one. |

Mickael2: So if the child is finally allowed to play and maybe he impresses and then loses form completely to the point that he becomes a free agent, what will he then fall back on? Start from secondary school again?! You can enter the university whenever you want but secondary education has to be attained before you can start talking about football This is where the problem is. You think paper certificates are the only channels to success in life. Besides, even if one at the age of 40 wants to obtain O/Level Certificates u do not need to attend secondary school. There is an exam called GCE naaaa. There is even GCE WAEC and GCE NECO now. There is no age limit for education my brother. The more atrocious act is to deny that boy that chance to become a professional footballer because he cannot pass his academic tests. |
