Onitsha dey learn where Uyo dey! price f commodities go scare even dangote...I got 5 bad looking tomato fruits for 200 nd a coke bottle sized cucumber 4 d same price 1 month ago. dt alone made me wise! |

DeLaRue: 1. Climatic, environmental and soil conditions plus disease pressure in the South of the country can make growing tomato a major challenge. Against this backdrop, growing a determinate variety where nursery to harvesting can be completed in a relatively short time makes more sense. The longer your tomato plants remain in the open soil, the greater the risk of a devastating disease.
2. Unless you have a contract to supply buyers like supermarkets at a decent fixed price, there's no point taking the risk with indeterminate tomato plants for 4 or 5 months or more. Prices are often too low in the open markets to justify wasting all that time.
3. Determinate gives you an opportunity to harvest most of your fruits over a short period. This is perfect for targeting mid - May to late June when tomato price is highest in this country.
Good luck. wow! this z quite educative! u have said it all, no wonder those experienced farmers don't do "long term harvest crops" pls do mind to address d workability of polybags for tomato. nd are there disease tolerant alternative varieties to cobra nd padma, a neighbour who collects my rabbit urine did experimental portions f d 2 varieties nd said market women gave a lot f negative reviews abt taste nd shape, d thing weak me sha |

Yampotatocarrot: Thanks for your input. How can one balance it out?
One challenge I had when I used poultry manure was chicken abi na hens scattering everything, did u experience such using rabbit droppings? I believe d chickens destroyed ur crops cz f d grain remnants and d maggots in d dung and do so 2 rabbit droppings if d above factors abound! I avoid these by reducing amt f wasted feed pellet in droppings and drying d droppings. rabbits on solely greens don't attract chickens 2 dr droppings. I balance it in my limited knowledge by applying good amt f ash from wood and bush clearings if 4 fruit veges only... d experienced Ogas okoroemeka and cocoboms can help out on d balancing tin tho |

excanny: Yes. Rabbit manure is not considered "hot". And can be applied directly to plants
It's a better manure than poultry. Has the highest NPK level of animal poop.
I've been looking for it o. Do you rear rabbits? I was almost thinking of rearing rabbits again if not for lack of space. meet an experienced rabbit farmer in ur area and u will see ways of maximizing ur available space through proper construction and u may b lucky 2 realize they don't have need for d droppings. I can't snap with my phone, I wd have shown u mine |

Yampotatocarrot: Does rabbit dropping have any effect when applied directly to plants? I'm having a hard time soaking my poultry droppings in water, because of the smell (Its a residential area kind of).
Which is preferable to use, the urine or droppings, and what side effect(s) do they have? the droppings does not burn plant and encourage earthworm population explosion, but just be aware DT d nitrogen content in the (urine) z high and may encourage foliage growth at the expense of flowering and fruiting, so look to balance it out. jst my personal experience o, the snr bosses in d house can help out |

okoroemeka: the yield of that variety is simply crazy,if you don't top the crops in time the branches will be breaking because of fruit load, but unfortunately it's for dry season it doesn't like water on the leafs. I will use d same GAP for cukes on d pepper cz d land will b fully available frm January next year...btw I m abt 2 trial cukes on a 12 by 16m space f land for abt 750 plants using spacing of 0.5 by 1m with 2 plants per stand, do u think d spacing z adequate? bamboo z crazily expensive in uyo! hw can i buy a bamboo stick for #300 each? will chat u up sir through WhatsApp |

okoroemeka: hmm,we have not done anything to the melon,we are so busy that we forgot the melon, even common fungicide or foliar we have not sprayed, thank God we applied good manure and nematicide before planting that why all insects ran away, they are crawling now with small tendrils appearing,it's time for 1st NPK/urea application, but I will give it to this melons no amount of sunlight can shake them,we irrigate every 3 days but their heat tolerance is unbelievable,no wonder they said it originated from the desert, and thing noticed is that no nematicide ,no vegetables farming for us as simple as that, that thing kills anything that flew, crawl, jumped or wriggled near the melons, including snails, centipede, millipedes, worms of various categories, caterpillars of different models, bettles of all colours, but only drawback it also kills earthworm, but a small price to pay for a good yield. rabbit droppings can easily replenish earthworm population! or u cud buy vermicompost to replenish d soil...I think since d nairaland crash incident years ago, this ranks amongst d top 10 most educative and honestly open agric thread I've read, abeg no use paid seminar spoil am o |
