Ezegozie: i think we should be discussing better things apart from comparing courses, because it is too childish for this thread
a Geophysicist will never agree that geology is better than geophysics, neither will a geologist agree that geophysics is better.
By the way, Employment is based on God profficiency connection smartness intelligence
pls let us discus something that will contribute to our knowledge other than unnecesary arguement. because this kind of arguement can even weaken some young students.
because when ur course is critisized in order to win a debate, it may make you hate the course which will subsequently reduce ur enthusiasm towards reading. Nawaoo, Bro eze, not like that na, Hahahahaha, its just a debate, its doesn't really mean one is that better, we are all winners, pls o o o, its also helping to make the thread active, else it would be too dry, calm down o o o, pls lets chat on what'sapp. |

The winner. Of the first and second debate is going home with a surprise gift courtesy of me...let the debate start, ideology crude oil and others in the house let hear your voice.... crudedude: I love your response. but again I ask. On a broader scale of Job prospects which has more options? The Geologist or the Electrical Engineer? If i might add also, the Oil Industry is not the only industry.
Besides more and more schools are now offering Geology and admitting much more students.
The Geologist is most peculiar to Oil and gas industry, and whatever involves the earth. The Electrical Engineer can work in a cement factory, in refineries, in a bank, in space programmes, in power generation/transmission, in construction, in communication and so on and so forth. Infact, Any place that involves "designing, building, and maintaining structures, machines, devices, systems, materials and processes." There's a 90% chance there's an Electrical Engineer there.
This you'll agree is way more than what's obtainable for a Geologist. Some are even of the opinion that a Geophysicist has more options than a Geologist.
I know the dream of every Geologist is to be in Oil and gas. But if (God forbid) he's not there, What are his options?.
At the end of the day. Not everybody will work in the Oil and Gas Industry. We can only pray for Gods favour.
I have a question for the professionals just to pacify my curios mind.
In the Oil and Gas industry as a whole from exploration to production plus servicing. Which of the professionals in debate have more slots?
Good morning crudedude, Nawaoo, geology has over 60specialties, it doesn't end in oil gas its just because of finance that's makin Nigerian geologist depend on oil, besides Nigeria is not harnessing mining sector well, Oga calm down. |

crudedude: Happy New Year guys. back to our debate
All protocols duly observed please permit one more time to remind us the topic of our debate...
Our topic does not seek to downplay or compare the impact of these two set of professionals. Indeed they are both champions in their respective fields. The topic however seeks our opinion on which is better to study in Nigeria. This I believe may be with reference to our current education standard, the job prospects when one graduates and what have you. In my first post I highlighted how broad the job scope of the Electrical engineer is. Though I limited it to the Oil and gas industry alone. We may not need to go into other career fields as this might take us the whole day.
I now go to my second point.
In my honest opinion, I will pick electrical engineering. Its no secret that the Nigerian education system is poor at the moment. Ill equipped universities and inadequate staff are but a fragment of the total problem. I still believe even with these scenarios the Electrical engineer is taught better because they have better teaching staff and better laboratories/facilities to learn with. While I may not have facts at this moment to back this claim I will seek to appeal to our reasoning and sense of judgment.
Geology is not taught in class. it is a field study. How equipped are our Universities today to teach geology. How many geology departments have their own buses? how often do they go on field trips? how many have work stations? of those that do have work stations how many of it are functional and in full use?. A few peculiar problems of geology study in Nigeria.
One may argue that the Electrical Engineer has similar problems but lets be sincere to ourselves. In the school you graduated from is the electrical engineering department favoured ahead of the geology department? There is your answer....
I'll stop here for now. Rebuttals anyone?
Now where's that my fried rice Hahahahaha kwaFe, you are funny, its very clear from point that you can't proof your claims its based on assumptions, you are from FUTO, ask those in ee department how many practicals they have done, how many courses where they well taught, e e students are intelligent and smart that's all, besides you know their lecturers help them and assist during marking, believe me our little field experience has done wonders that e e lectures can't, that our workstation is not functional does mean the one in unn, unI port or uniben etc is not functional, |

imag5: nice one moderators, my co debator, mentions that they produce machines and devices, that aid geologist, I also want to point that these machines and devices run on fuels such as hydraulic, diesel, petrol etc, who sources for this fuel "a geologist" meaning their machines will not work at most by effective and useful if not for the fuels provided thru months and years of research works put together by I geologist. again he calmed who's is better taught in university, this is not a hidden fact, that geologist are not only taught in class, we do practicals, go on field trips see the things we learn and interact with it. how many electrical engineers can claim they have seen electrons or neutrons its just an assumptions at university level esp in Nigeria. I have many electrical engineers who calm some of their lecturers didn't really explained most processes well. so what's the point. geology remains a better option, that adds value to life, solves environmental problems, saves the ecosystems name it. geologist does what God would love, that's replenishing the earth, making humans happy. thank you |

Moderators, our judge, co debaters, fellow professionals in the house, students and all Nairalanders. I hereby support the notion that geology is better than electrical electronics. first of all, geology deals with the science of the earth, starting from understanding our universe including the space, atmosphere, earth surface and subsurface, its goes along way to understanding the activities going on in these places, the benefits, the problems arising from these regions, and best ways to solve them, these are things electrical electronics may not be able to do in years to come. secondly, as a geologist we interpret Gods hand writing in rocks, atmosphere, name it, its a wow experience. we are doing the mind of God, unravelling mysteries hidden in ages past from the proud ones (EE) but reveal to us the humble ones. what a glorious ministry to partake in displaying Gods multi-dimensional wisdom. with this few points of mine I believe have been able to convince this honorable house that geology is better than electrical electronics. ps: pls if you can't counter these points, lets the results be announced, lol |

imag5: For those wondering what is NDT pls take look at these explanation Nondestructive testing - NDT - use test methods to examine an object, material or system without impairing its future usefulness. Non-destructive testing is often required to verify the quality of a product or a system. Commonly used techniques are
AET - Acoustic Emission Testing ART - Acoustic Resonance Testing ET - Electromagnetic Testing IRT - Infrared Testing LT - Leak Testing MT - Magnetic Particle Testing PT - Dye Penetrant Testing RT - Radiographic Testing UT - Ultrasonic Testing VT - Visual Testing (VI - Visual Inspection) AET - Acoustic Emission Testing Acoustic Emission Testing takes advantage of the sharp sound that PCCP emits when it breaks or slips to identify areas of active distress within a construction. AET can be used to verify the structural integrity of pressure vessels, spheres, high temperature reactors and piping, coke drums, above ground storage tanks, cryogenic storage tanks and more. The inspection is executed externally and shut-down of the process may often not be necessary.
ART - Acoustic Resonance Testing After an impact a specimen will vibrate in certain characteristic modes and frequencies that can be measured by a microphone or laser vibrometer. Acoustic sonic and ultrasonic resonance analysis is a non-destructive testing technique that allows testing of a wide range of test objects. Typical detecting faults are cracks, cavities, detached layers, material inconsistencies, hardness deviation in materials.
ET - Electromagnetic Testing Electromagnetic testing is the process of inducing electric currents and/or magnetic fields inside a test object and observing the response. A defect in the test object may be detected where electromagnetic interference creates a measurable response.
IRT - Infrared Testing Infrared testing is a technique that uses thermography, an infrared imaging and measurement camera, to see and measure infrared energy emitted from an object. Can be used to heat development, lack of insulation, thin walls in constructions and more.
LT - Leak Testing Techniques used to detect and locate leaks in pressure containment parts, pressure vessels, and structures. Leaks can be detected by using liquid and gas penetrant techniques, electronic listening devices, pressure gauge measurements or soap-bubble tests.
MT - Magnetic Particle Testing Magnetic particle testing is accomplished by inducing a magnetic field in a ferromagnetic material and then dusting the surface with iron particles. The surface will produce magnetic poles and distort the magnetic field in such a way that the iron particles are attracted and concentrated making defects on the surface of the material visible.
PT - Dye Penetrant Testing The dye penetrant testing can be used to locate discontinuities on material surfaces. A highly penetrating dye on the surface will enter discontinuities after a sufficient penetration time, and after removing the excess dye with a developing agent, the defects on the surface will be visible.
RT - Radiographic Testing Radiographic testing can be used to detect internal defects in castings, welds or forgings by exposure the construction to x-ray or gamma ray radiation. Defects are detected by differences in radiation absorption in the material as seen on a shadow graph displayed on photographic film or a fluorescent screen.
UT - Ultrasonic Testing Ultrasonic testing uses high frequency sound energy to conduct examinations and make measurements. Ultrasonic inspection can be used for flaw detection/evaluation, dimensional measurements, material characterization, and more.
VT - Visual Testing (VI - Visual Inspection) Visual testing or inspection offers a wide range of options to secure proper system or product quality. nice one chief, I have some experience in magnetic particle and radiographic test, that part of what I did during my industrial training, thanks Bro |
