According to this online Cambridge dictionary talent is “a natural ability to be good at something, especially without being taught”. Many believe it comes naturally while others see it as a skill developed through capacity building. The fact is, even if one is naturally good at something, the role of training cannot be ignored.

For example, you can’t know if you’re a talented piano player when you don’t play any in the first place. Even the best footballers get rusty without training. In schools, we see students who are exceptionally good at numerate subjects. And they always seem to be like having two heads compared to everybody else. For others, the struggle may have been different. They may not have started well but they turned out to maths gurus later.

So what happened in between for these ones?

They simply made up their minds to excel and develop themselves. Hence, talent can be improved on.

Here are a few tips on how to build and develop your talent:

1. Recognise your talent
– Take time to discover your talent. Find an activity you really like, don’t under- or over-estimate your talent. What have you done successfully in the past? What can you keep doing without any monetary reward? What do you enjoy doing most? With this process, you can identify where your talent lies.

2. Set goals and Challenge yourself. – Building and developing your talents will require setting realistic goals and targets. A university study has shown that people who write down their goals are more likely to succeed. Don’t say “I want to start my football training sessions”, but say “I am going to start my training session in May at Ajegunle stadium”. That is more specific and has a timeline. Also, set a goal above what you can achieve as it will motivate you to go the extra mile – challenge yourself.

3. Learn, Practice connect with like-minds– It’s necessary to take courses to develop your talents. Look for a course that fits your learning style. During the sessions, network with like-minds as they could be a source of motivation. There are people around who can teach you in exchange of another skill, or just to share their knowledge. Identify such people and learn from them. Like the Holy Book says Iron sharpens iron, so one talented person can sharpen another. Partners who have the same goals can help you overcome obstacles, motivate and inspire you.

4. Always believe in yourself – Feel confident about yourself and your skills. It will build a positive energy that you will need to overcome challenges. Even if you may fail a few times, keep trying again. Each trial gives you confidence that you will get it right soon, don’t give up.

you are still not getting it, am no longer in the oil industry but If 3/4 of your gas is being flared, why worry about 1/4 loss through pipeline vandalism

Govt should partner with Private sector and build more storage and gas processing facilities. Visit frontier oil limited at Eket, you will see their gas processing plant, it is even not enough as they still flare a greater percentage

obailala:
I live in the oil industry, and I am aware of the constraints to gas utilization in Nigeria. Maybe you should try reading up articles on the constraints to gas utilisation in Nigeria. A simple example is our thermal power plants across the nation which are always down due to gas supply issues; it's not that we don't have abundant gas or that we don't know how useful gas can be, but rather, we have a more demonic problem called 'pipeline vandalism' which has hindered gas utilisation in Nigeria for decades.

PoliticsProbe Buhari, Suspend Nigeria ! - Tom Marino, U.S, Congressman write Obama by ideology(op): 6:07am On Sep 05, 2016
Tom Marino, a United States of American, U.S, Congressman, has written a letter to John Kerry, the U.S Secretary of State, urging him to withhold the assistance rendered to Nigeria, based on the “autocratic tendencies” of President Muhammadu Buhari.

In the letter, which THISDAY said it exclusively obtained, on Sunday September 4, Marino, claimed that there were a number of warning signs emerging in the current administration.

He also expressed concern over Nigeria’s anti-corruption war, saying, “of additional concern is President Buhari’s selective anti-corruption drive, which has focused almost exclusively on members of the opposition party, over-looking corruption among some of Buhari’s closest Advisors. Politicising his anti-corruption efforts, has only reinforced hostility among Southerners”.

He asked the U.S to refrain from selling war planes and other military equipment to Nigeria, until Buhari establishes a track record of working towards inclusion.

“I am encouraged by the personal interest you have taken, in aiding Nigeria and its administration, as it takes on endemic corruption, multiple insurgent movements, and a faltering economy. However, I believe there are a number of warning signs emerging in the Buhari administratio,n that signal ‘the man who once led Nigeria as a military dictator, might be sliding towards former autocratic tendencies.

“I would urge the US to withhold its security assistance to the nation, until President Buhari demonstrates a commitment to inclusive government, and the most basic tenets of democracy: freedom to assemble and freedom of speech. A logical start towards this commitment, is for the Nigerian government to hold accountable those members of the Nigerian Police Force and the Nigerian military complicity in extra-judicial killings and war crimes.

“Human rights groups like Amnesty International, have widely documented torture, inhumane treatment, and extra-judicial killings of defenseless Nigerians, since President Buhari took office.”

Quoting an Amnesty International Report, he wrote, “in the last six months, Nigeria’s military has unlawfully killed at least 350 people, and allowed more than 168 people, including babies and children, to die in military detention.”

“The Secretary to the Government of Kaduna State, even admitted to burying 347 of those killed in a mass grave. And while President Buhari promised swift condemnation, his words rang empty. Instead of swift reforms, Buhari chose to reinstate Major General Ahmadu Mohammed, who Amnesty International revealed was in charge of the Nigerian Military unit that executed more than 640 unarmed former detainees.

“Also, in separate incidents concerning the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the Nigerian Army has killed at least 36 – the real number is likely higher – people, since December 2015, in an attempt to silence opposition and quell attempts by the group to gather publicly.”

Describing Buhari as a former military dictator, whose reign (as Military Head of State) was cut short by a coup, he said the President has continually shunned inclusivity, in favour of surrounding himself with Advisors and Ministers from the North of the country, and the region he considers home.

“Of President Buhari’s 122 appointees, 77 are from the North, and control many of the key Ministries and positions of power. Distrust is already high in Nigeria, and favouring Northerners for key appointments has only antagonized the issue,” he wrote.

“These appointments are also primarily Muslims in the North, and Christian in the South.

“Of additional concern, is President Buhari’s selective anti-corruption drive, which has focused almost exclusively on members of the opposition party, over-looking corruption among some of Buhari’s closest Advisors. Politicising his anti-corruption efforts has only reinforced hostility among Southerners.

“The State Department should urge President Buhari, to form a government that represents the diversity of its citizens, and allows dissenting voices to be heard. Democracy can thrive, only if people are free to assemble, to express their beliefs, and voice their concerns,” he wrote.
