Foreign Affairs / China Loans Niger Republic $400 Million In Return For Crude Oil by idolda: 2:18pm On Apr 21 |
Niger’s military junta has signed a US$400 million deal with a Chinese state-owned oil giant as part of its plan to “diversify international partnerships” after cutting ties with France and the United States. The deal signed on Friday by Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine and China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) chief executive officer Zhou Zuokun will see the Chinese company advance the money to help Niger’s military rulers meet short-term obligations as the economy struggles to recover from the impact of sanctions. According to the Nigerien Press Agency, the Chinese company will be repaid with crude oil shipments within 12 months at an interest rate of 7 per cent. “There is no shadow over this as we have safeguarded the interests of our country,” Zeine said after signing the deal in the presence of Chinese ambassador Jiang Feng, who has been leading the negotiations with Niger. “China is a great friend for Niger, we can never say it enough,” Zeine said. “It must be remembered since the beginning of this great oil adventure, China has always been at the side of our country and today it is proven that at such crucial moments, we could obviously manage to request an advance, these are Niger’s rights, and we will give ourselves all the means to repay them.” “This signature demonstrates the friendship … and fruitful cooperation between the two states,” said Jiang. Resource-backed deals of this type are extremely popular with Chinese lenders, but critics say they increase countries’ vulnerability to debt. Africa Development Bank president Akinwumi Adesina has called for an end to loans given in exchange for oil or natural resources, describing them as “non-transparent, unfair and corruptible” adding that they “complicate debt resolution, and mortgage the future of countries”. “Africa must end all natural resources-backed loans,” he said last year during the Summit for New Global Financing Pact held in France. The finance model was pioneered in Angola, which received billions of dollars from China for its reconstruction at the end of the country’s 27-year civil war in 2000 and still uses oil shipments to repay Chinese loans. We dey hype ourselves a lot and unreasonable in our opinions. If UK govt doesn't want Airpeace, they won't grant them license to fly to the UK or if they want to frustrate airpeace effort they will grant them permission to fly to a remote places like Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland and not their economic capital like London. Do you know how many airlines of other countries that don't even fly to London but Birmingham and other not so popular destinations in the UK ? People don't reason they just jump to conclusions based on their shallow thinking and pass that as statement of fact. I really pity this generations 1 Like |

It is obvious this particular "investigative blog" has personal grievances with this particular smuggler. I can clearly heard where that man was saying custom Boss smuggled trailers of rice without the custom doing anything but this particular "investigative journalist" decided to ignore that particular one and focus on this guy threat to deal with custom officer. This selective investigation will only run this particular smuggler down while hundreds and thousands of smugglers in the good book of custom continue to game the system. Even the custom bosses self. I don't support illegal smuggling of goods either by smugglers or by custom officers as it robs the country of its revenue 1 Like |

Bluntemperor: Is Saudi Arabia as corrupt as Nigeria? Has Saudi Arabia spent $25billion to repair refineries in the last 10years and produce nothing? Do you think Saudi Arabia would spent such amount of on moribund refineries that produces barely nothing? Nigeria has 4 different refineries with a combined capacity of 445,000 per day and already spent $25billion to repair them in the last 10years whereas Dangote built a completely new refinery with a capacity to produce 650,000 for just $20billion. If you are the manager of such company, would you advice the govt to keep pumping huge money on such moribund refineries? If Yaradua had allowed the sales to stand and the $25billion had been invested on road network, healthcare, electricity among others do you think we will be in this state by now? 1 Like 1 Share |
Politics / Re: No Half Measures, Tinubu, Sell Refineries - Punch Editorial Board by idolda: 8:29am On Jan 23 |
Punch is right, we can't keep spending trillions of naira every other year repairing the refineries when clearly the workers there will sabotage it. Yaradua made a very wrong decision reversing the sales of those refineries to Dangote. Best is to sell the refineries and invest the proceed in roads, healthcare system and agriculture. Govt has no business in doing business and let's leave oil business to private sector let them compete and crash the price while govt limit it function to regulation and oversight. 9 Likes 1 Share |

Health / Harassment: Go To Court, Not Strike, OAUTH Nurses Challenge Doctors by idolda: 8:06pm On Jun 22, 2022 |
The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife branch, on Wednesday, challenged the Association of Resident Doctors in the hospital to approach the court of law for redress, instead of embarking on industrial action over the alleged harassment of their member by a nurse. Doctors in the hospital had announced a two-day warning strike to protest the alleged harassment of one of them, by a senior nurse at the Female Adult Orthopedic Ward of the hospital, because the doctor refused to discard a waste generated after a medical procedure. But stating its side of the matter, NANNM, in a statement obtained in Osogbo on Wednesday, signed by the chairman and secretary of the association, Comrade O. Ajayi and O. Oyeniyi, respectively, absolved the nurse on duty on the day of the incident. The nurses maintained that there was nothing wrong in asking that the waste generated be discarded by one of the doctors that generated it. The Association also said its lawyer had written to the OAUTHC management to protect the personal and professional rights of the nurse and all nurses at large in the hospital. The statement further read in parts, “If the resident doctors are confident enough that their member is harassed illegally, why not honourably seek legal redress and unbiased judgment from the court of law, instead of threatening to further put innocent lives at risk. Will the loss of lives of Nigerians be a legitimate remedy for enforcing global best practices of waste management? “As a legally compliant association, the Lawyer of NANNM has written to the OAUTHC management to protect the personal and professional rights of the nurse and all nurses at large in the OAUTHC and the world, at large. The principle of duty of care dictates that “whoever generates waste must segregate and dispose it.” The refusal of the nurse to put the life of other healthcare workers and environmental staff at risk that the waste generated by the resident doctors must be appropriately segregated and discarded cannot be refuted, hence the need to call for action by the nurse.” It also further said that nurses in the OAUTHC had agreed to continuously uphold the “duty of care” to ensure that the ward environment remained safe for the patients, relatives, and the entire staff within the hospital, adding that it would not tolerate more intimidation or professional harassment from members of the ARD in the hospital Source: https://punchng.com/harassment-go-to-court-not-strike-oauth-nurses-challenge-doctors/?utm_term=Autofeed&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1655909289 |

Foreign Affairs / Finland To Apply To Join NATO For The First Time Amid Russia's Ongoing Invasion by idolda: 9:01am On May 12, 2022 |
Finland's leader has said the country needs to apply to NATO "without delay" as the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues. President Sauli Niinisto made the announcement as he said the country, which shares an 810-mile border and a difficult past with Russia, must apply for membership to the organisation. In a joint statement with the country's prime minister Sanna Marin, they said: "We hope that the national steps still needed to make this decision will be taken rapidly within the next few days. "Now that the moment of decision-making is near, we state our equal views, also for information to the parliamentary groups and parties. "NATO membership would strengthen Finland's security. As a member of NATO, Finland would strengthen the entire defence alliance. "Finland must apply for NATO membership without delay." Since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, Finland has increased its co-operation with NATO as one of its "partner" nations. But it has not actually joined in order to maintain good relations with its eastern neighbour. The government and parliament in Finland is expected to give approval to the decision shortly. The announcement by president Sauli Niinisto and prime minister Sanna Marin means Finland is virtually certain to seek NATO membership, though a few steps remain before the application process can begin. Neighbouring Sweden is expected to decide on joining Nato in the coming days Last month, Mr Niinisto - who heads foreign policy in the country in co-operation with the government - told newspaper Ilta-Sanomat: "If it happens as it looks likely that Finland and Sweden will join (NATO), then it will create a new kind of North for us, one that is responsible, stable and strong." Support for joining NATO in the country has changed rapidly since Russia launched its so-called "special operation" in Ukraine - with the latest poll by public broadcaster YLE showing 76% of Finns in favour and only 12% against. Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited Stockholm and Helsinki to sign the agreements this week. The agreements say the UK will come to the aid of both countries if they are attacked, and vice-versa. Health / Re: Three Fresh Omicron Cases Confirmed In Nigeria by idolda: 9:09pm On Dec 07, 2021 |
Godszilla: So you believe only 1k people died in Nigeria due to Covid-19 related case? Lol. Maybe the 1k is those who have confirmed cases and are held in isolation centres. Nigeria has no reliable data trust me (I'm a health personnel and worked in Nigeria health sector for over 10yrs) and I can tell you that. Nigeria doesn't test citizens for Covid-19. A small country like UK for instance with a total population of 67million has conducted over 370million Covid-19 test, Nigeria on the other hand with a population of over 200million has not even conducted up to 4million Covid-19 test. If you don't test people, how will you know they have Covid-19? Where will you get reliable data to use? In Nigeria people die due to covid related complications but they are not tested or reported but in Western countries every sick and most healthy people are tested for Covid-19. And it is a criminal offence (they treat that person like a thief who rob bank) to bury someone without reporting and registering the death 1 Like |

Godszilla: I just dropped part of the reasons in my response to oakinshield. Here is the summary of the Reasons: Covid-19 is mostly killing the elderly and Africa doesn't have much aged population like Western countries. Secondly, westerners and their media value lives and always take extreme caution. For instance my child finished eating in school and immediately ran to join his colleagues to play football. Because he just finished eating without resting before joining them, he vomited. We were called to come and pick him despite him explaining what happened to them, they said they have to exercise caution. When I got there the head teacher confirmed he was ok but I still need to take him home and observe him for 2 days at home and if nothing happened after 2 days he can resume school. That is how they are they hype things especially when they are not yet sure they want to put in place extreme measures and assume the worse which is quite alien to us in Nigeria 2 Likes 1 Share |
Health / Re: Three Fresh Omicron Cases Confirmed In Nigeria by idolda: 7:49pm On Dec 07, 2021 |
oakinshield: To get your answers take time to research the following questions and you will understand better: 1. What age group is Covid-19 killing the most? 2. What is the percentage of aged population in Western countries? 3. What is the percentage of aged population in Africa? Let me help you out. Majority of Covid-19 death is among the elderly, Western Youths and workforce are not dying. Africa has fewer elderly (Please don't argue this if you have not taken your time to look at the population of Nigeria and their age group and compare it with Western countries) and Covid-19 is only killing mostly elderly people and not the young ones. Since Africa has a youthful population death rate is not pronounced same way death rate among western youth is not pronounced. Lastly western media always sort of hype things because they value human lives. If a dead man iis suddenly found on the street of London, you will continue to see the news on BBC, Sky News and other foreign media for at least 1 week. Drop ten dead bodies in the heart of Lagos, hardly will it make front page of Newspapers but let Tonto Dike says she used Kayamata on Kpokpogiri, the media in Nigeria will continue to trend the News 3 Likes 1 Share |

Reading some comments above make me feel so sorry for the future of the country considering that these are made by the youths which are the leaders of tomorrow. We love to live in denials. I understand the mistrust for the govt but that doesn't erase the fact on ground that the Omicron variant is widespread in Nigeria already. The fact that Nigeria isn't actively testing and massively sequencing samples doesn't erase that fact omicron is in the country. 2 people who arrived in Canada from Nigeria tested positive to Omicron 21 people from Nigeria who arrived UK testd positive to Omicron A student from Nigeria who newly arrived in Sydney Australia tested positive to Omicron variant Ghana Health Minister saaid 28% of new arrivals from Nigeria and South Africa are testing positive to Omicron variant The above news and more lend credence to the assertion that the omicron variant is already circulating in Nigeria. Rather than accept this fact and take measures to protect ourselves we kept on screaming it is a scam. People are dying due to Covid-19 in Nigeria yet we kept on denying it because we don't have access to testing which is readily available in other saner climes. 10 Likes 2 Shares |
