The Senate has made the unilateral decision to ask President Buhari to order Minister of Labour and Productivity to set up an ad-hoc committee that will review the age limits for job seekers and come up with a policy that will enable the most competent applicant gain employment.

The move was initiated by Senator Ibrahim Gobir and was later taken up by the house.

Senator Gobir in his move referenced Orders 42 and 52 of the Standing Rules of the Senate, and stated that the requirement of Ministries Departments and Agencies and other private bodies, that set age barriers, “inadvertently excludes and marginalises skilful and competent prospective applicants from participating in such exercises.”

Gobir said, “Many individuals resort to falsifying their age all in a bid to fall within the required age limit for them to be gainfully employed.

 “This development, where a person believes he is unemployable, can lead them to embracing criminal activities and further increase the growing crime rate and insecurity in the country.”

A Federal High Court in Lagos has condemned a previous Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Executive Director (ED), Captain Ezekiel Bala Agaba, to seven years detainment for laundering N1.5 billion.

Airline operators have been given the directive to contact the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority to verify the status of any airport prior to selling tickets to passengers.

The Director-General of the NCAA, Capt. Musa Nuhu, announced the directive during a webinar that took place on Tuesday night.

The Governor of Oyo State, Mr. Seyi Makinde has proposed a N3 billion water supply investment plan for the cities as well as rural areas in the state.

On Friday evening, some unidentified gunmen ambushed Isinbode Ekiti in the Ekiti East Council area of Ekiti State and left with three people.

Eyewitnesses said that the gunmen who were about ten in number attacked a sawmill located along Isinbode–Ode Road and carted away with the belongings of the workers and then abducting two persons at the scene.

One source said after the gunmen left the sawmill, they went on and attacked a Hilux van on the main road and took away one person in the vehicle who is believed to be a government official.

The Public Relations Officer of the Police, Sunday Abutu, confirmed the incident, and disclosed that one of the abducted persons had luckily escaped from the abductors, leaving only two persons with the gunmen of which one is a senior civil servant.

The PRO said that the police are currently on the trail of the abductors and said the captives would be freed unhurt.

“These human rights lawyers were his promoters and today, they are the ones defending him because they know that if this investigation goes deeper than just looking for what Magu did wrong so as to remove him from office, their dirty secrets will be revealed for Nigerians to see.

A 35-year-old man, by the name Christian Alisigwe, who has allegedly murdered his four-year-old son and then going on to bury him in a shallow grave inside his residence compound.

The incident, we learnt happened in Ihite, Azia in the Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.

“The man killed his son, Ebubechukwu, and buried the corpse in a shallow grave at his compound. It happens that the victim was his only son,” a source narrated.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr Haruna Mohammed, confirmed the incident on Friday through a statement.

The PRO said police detectives who went to man’s residence and dug out the boy’s corpse and took it to Abam mortuary for an autopsy.

Mohammed disclosed that the case has now been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka for confidential investigation.

The PRO said, “On Friday, at about 3.21pm, police operatives attached to Azia Police Station arrested one Christian Alisigwe (35) of Ihite Azia in Ihiala LGA of Anambra State. Suspect allegedly used a cutlass and killed his own biological son, Ebubechukwu Alisigwe (4), of the same address and buried the corpse in a shallow grave in his compound.

The Ghanaian government has reopened 600 shops belonging to Nigerian traders resident in Ghana after they were locked up for six months.

The shops were locked by authorities over a dispute with traders.

In a statement by a NIDCOM information officer, Gabriel Odu, Ukaoha stated that the ECOWAS Protocol of Free Movement of Persons, Goods and Services should not be observed in breach but in the spirit of brotherhood and diplomatic reciprocity.

Dabiri-Erewa said that the intervention that was carried out for the re-opening of the shops was at the highest level of diplomacy and bilateral relations between both countries.

The Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, said on Friday that he has no involvement in any litigation with the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State or anywhere in Nigeria.

The minister, in a statement by his media office, said that an unnamed group was planning to tarnish his image by alleging that he had a “phantom interest” in a court case involving the APC in Rivers state.

The ex governor gave a note of warning that no one should drag his name into any court matter involving the party in the state or anywhere else as he was, “for now,” concentrating on his work at the Ministry of Transportation.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, has said there is an increase in the demand for oxygen by COVID-19 patients in recent times.

Due to this development, the minister said the state government had increased efforts to make oxygen available across all local government areas in the state.

Abayomi said this on Friday at a Zoom webinar by the Lagos Civil Society against COVID-19. The webinar which was themed, ‘COVID-19 Home/Community Based Care in Lagos: Issues and Opportunities.’ was presided by the Chairman, International Institute of Risk and Society Management Nigeria, Dr Eugene Itua.

Speaking at the webinar, the commissioner stated, “We noticed that there is a slight increase in the demand for oxygen. Patients are coming in with breathlessness and sometimes they present (themselves) to other hospitals in need of oxygen.

A Chinese couple have been arrested in Abuja for allegedly locking up their Nigerians employees inside their apartment for a period of four months.

According to the police, Eight of the workers of the Chinese couple were rescued by the personnel of the Utako Divisional Police Station on Tuesday as they were tipped-off by a resident, who reported the incident to the Human Rights radio station.

The police, on getting to the scene raided the home of the Chinese in the Jabi area of Abuja and took the couple and their employees to the station.

About 30 Nigerians who are very active in the political space have formed a political movement. Members of the movement include activists, academics, and other professionals. The movement is called National Consultative Front.

The objectives of the movement include mobilizing interested Nigerians for mass action towards political constitutional reforms that are purely citizen-driven and process-led in creating a new peoples’ constitution.

The objectives were written in a communique after a month-long nationwide consultations and several virtual meetings. The communique was made public at the National Secretariat, in Abuja, on Wednesday.

Some of the members of the movement include: Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Na’abba; former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, Dr. Obadiah Mailafia; Olisa Agbakoba, SAN; Femi Falana SAN; Col. Abubakar Umar (retd.), Dr Oby Ezekwesili; Prof Jibo Ibrahim; Yabagi Sanni; Amb, Nkoyo Toyo, Isa Aremu, Prof Chidi Odinkalu, and Senator Shehu Sani.

Others include: Prof. Remi Sonaiya, Mallam Tanko Yinusa, Alhaji Shettima Yerima, Lady Funke Awolowo, Peter Ameh and Ogbeni Lanre Banjo, among others.

A formal introduction will be made to the public later this month. Some parts of the resolutions adopted after the meeting read in part, “A new ideological mass Movement shall be initiated to embark on immediate mass mobilisation of the nooks and crannies of the country for popular mass action towards political constitution reforms that is citizens-driven and process-led in engendering a new Peoples’ Constitution for a new Nigeria that can work for all.

The new movement shall also, without delay, mobilise for the economic wellbeing and prosperity of all Nigerians by demanding and ensuring that Chapter 2 of the present Constitution i.e.; “Fundamental Objectives & Directive Principles of State Policy becomes justiciable once and for all, while also mounting an articulate and vigorous campaign to deconstruct and reconstruct obnoxious election laws which have provided leeway for opportunists in the corridor of power to subvert the will of the electorate making voting irrelevant in determining who actually becomes elected in Nigeria.”

The Members of the movement said that they were sad about the state of the Nation — how the political leadership have not protected Nigerians against attacks from terrorists and kidnappers.

The Enugu State Government has made the announcement that it has successfully discharged of 13 COVID-19 patients, as they patients have recovered and tested negative twice, bringing the total number of discharged patients to 63.

Mr. Ikechukwu Obi, who is the commissioner for health in Enugu made the announcement in a statement on Wednesday in Enugu.

The commissioner said that his ministry has successfully discharged the 13 patients after treatment as they have recovered and tested negative for the virus.

He also stated that the state has not recorded any new case of COVID-19.

Mr. Obi said that the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Enugu is 261 as at the time of this writing.

“Total confirmed COVID-19 cases – 261, number of COVID-19 cases on treatment – 192, number of COVID-19 cases discharged – 63, number of confirmed COVID-19 related deaths is six,” he said.
