I'm surprised that this post is almost a month old and nobody responded. Or have we been so much programmed by CNN, BBC e.t.c to hate seeing the other side of the game ? |
elenduuche:Security = yes Speed = no Performance = ? By the way Seun, why don't you try developing some developer tools. Based on the number of developers I'm seeing on Nairaland, seems it will sell. Beside that, since you're very familiar with the web, you can sell your product online. |
whatnext:RPM (Redhat Package Manager) rpm files are used for installing packages on linux distributions that are are based on redhat linux. They are like the setup.exe you use in windows but are not exactly the same. |
Hi guys, After seeing a lot of praises on oracle. I've finally decided that I will give a try. I've worked with MSSQL Server, Mysql, and other lighter dbms like sqlite and access(ashamed of admitting) but finally settled on firebird. I will try Oracle because everybody is talking Oracle. Although it seems to me that majority of the people talking Oracle have never tried another DBMS apart from it. Now I've downloaded the Express Edition Of Oracle 10g from their website. Am planning to play with it and see how it diifers from other DBMSes and if there is any significant advantages that it offers. I also plan to post my observations on Nairaland. Why am posting this here is because I may need clarification from long time Oracle users in case there is anything I got wrong. One more thing, am talking from a software developer's viwepoint and not that of a DBA. So am relatively free to choose the best DBMS that fits the project am working on. Till then be cool. ![]() |
There is nothing wrong in marrying a woman that earns more than you do. It all boils down to your self esteem and your readiness to accept your responsibilities. Her being rich doesn't mean she will take over your your responsibilities. Her money is hers and your money is for the whole family. That's why you are the man of the house. |
biggjoe:I think it's high time we learn to overcome our tribal instincts and look at the big picture. Once we engage tribalism then it's inevitable to suspend reasoning. The same way you think Igbos are being marginalized that's how some non-igbos think they are marginalized. A single state in the North has more than 50 ethnic groups, how about members of those ethnic groups?, do we have to appoint people from each group just to make them happy ?. Please, let's always remember that nobody chose his tribe, so it's not our faults that we belong to the ethnic groups we belonged to. Back to the topic. All sensible expert comments I heard about the redenomination say that it's not needed. Why do we have to worry so much about it then ?. I believe there are more important issues like the Niger-Delta crisis and PHCN to worry about. Am also not convinced by Soludo's explanation of it's advantages. As a lay man all I can understand is that the Naira is stronger if things in the market are cheaper or I can make more naira easier than I can make today without prices going up. |
Can MDB data be transfered to to all those one you mentionedThere are some tools that can do that. The one I can remember now is IBEasy http://www.marc-grange.net/telecharger_en.htm a direct download is available here http://www.marc-grange.net/cpt_en.htm It's a good free gui front-end for administering firebird databases. It allows you to import MDB files ie converting them to firebird databases. Your data remains intact. |
All hatred aside. Nigerians should understand that each section of the country needs the rest to survive. Think of an imaginary situation where each section sticks to it's resources and refuse to share it with the rest. The south will keep it's oil. The north will keep it's meat, grains, beans, land e.t.c The south-east will have to find a way of accomodating the great number of it's indigenes right now in the north. Now I've been to the south-east and I know this will be really difficult if possible. It means no kpomo and beans for the Yoruba man. But the truth is that you don't drink crude oil to live. So the south has to import food and the north has to import oil . So you see both sides will suffer. |
Please let's not start seeing this in terms of North and South and start seeing it in terms of Nigeria. As I said before I am no economist but I know redenomination will not increase the purchasing power of the Naira. Getting 1 Naira after redenomination will still be as difficult as getting 100 Naira of today. Meristem Securities have published an analysis of the whole reform here http://www.meristem.com.ng/fileupload/MERISTEM%20RESEARCH%20ECONOMIC%20ANALYSIS-%20CURRENCY%20REFORM.pdf It's a pdf file so you may need to download it. I believe we can consider them to be experts. I got the link to the document from this page http://www.meristem.com.ng/detail.php?link=monthlyecoanalysis Meristem's management team doesn't have a single Northerner, so all the North haters on this forum may wish to take the analysis without any bias. |
Hurginnie!:DBMS are used primaly to do the following operations on data 1- Insert 2-Update 3-Delete 4-Create Tables and objects used for managing data. Oracle is a DBMS as well as MS Sql Server, DB2, Access and the rest. Oracle can not host other dbms. Your question is like asking wether Firefox can host internet explorer and opera. I don't know if what you wan't is a DBMS that can inter-operate with other DBMS. That one, I don't know. |
You can protect the MDB file by giving it a password. Keep in mind the following -Access Databases don't grow beyond 1GB -They behave strangely when they're more than one connection at a time. -They work only on windows. If you're developing a web based app, your server has to be running windows -They can easily be corrupted (PHCN took power when you are running an insert, delete e.t.c) If you really want a light-weight database why don't you go for alternatives like Sqlite:feather-weight,very fast and stable with small footprint Firebird embedded server: High concurrency with rich stored procedure and trigger language. mySql embedded server |
Hey, guys. Let's not rush to conclusions. Many of us (including me) are not economists but we talk as if we are experts in the field. From my layman's perspective I welcomed the idea of redenomination, but we should also remember that that will not increase the purchasing power of the naira. Let's look at it like this; What used to be 100 naira will suddenly become 1 naira If your salary is Fifty thousand naira (N50,000) it will become Five Hundred Naira (N500) The redenomination will not make getting N1 any easier than getting N100 of now. My fear is that traders will hike prices after the redenomination which will make the naira weaker than it is now. Despite my support for the move, I was a little skeptical about it. This is because I know Soludo as an advocate of allowing economic forces to determine the exchange rate of the naira why the sudden change of heart. Was is not the same Soludo that insisted on printing higher Naira denominations ?. One thing I lately learned is that apart from the redenomination, there is a somewhat secret move of fixing the naira exhange rate against the dollar. Now we all know that the dollar is getting weaker and weaker everyday. Fixing our naira against the dollar will make it slide downwards with the dollar against other foreign currencies which is not what we want. I believe this article will be interesting to some of us http://allafrica.com/stories/200708220802.html Now for some of us that are saying that soludo has perfomed wonders by making the naira value appreciate. We shouldn't forget that during Abacha days the Naira to dollar exchange is: N22 = 1 dollar (Official) N82 = 1 dollar (Parallel Market) Soludo has done well with the bank consolidation but I think it's too early to Judge his latest move. |
uchokoro:I think somebody answered a similar question earlier in this thread. He made refference to microsoft communication control. You can find it in the project->components |
Pardon my ignorance, but is it not supposed to be Object instead of Abject ? ![]() The article kept talking about Object Oriented Programming stuff like encapsulation, polymorphism, inheritence. |
@binkabir, there's this dll called inpout.dll. It gives you access to the ports on your PC. But you will have to make direct API calls to it. You will find some usefull info here http://www.logix4u.net/ Although the site talks about parallel ports, you can still use inpout with serial ports. @Dynast, assuming your splash screen is name frmSplash and the main form you want show after the splash screen is frmMain. - Go to project-properties and change the startup object to frmSplash - On frmSplash drop a timer control and set it's interval property (in the properties window)to the duration you want to keep the splash screen on Note that the interval is in milliseconds, so 5 seconds will be 5000. - Double click on the timer and put the following code in the event handler unload me frmMain.show This implies that five seconds after showing frmSplash. frmSplash will unload itself and then show frmMain. hope that helps. |
The function for square root is sqr() and not sqrt(). Hope that solves your problem. |
@Fdeveloper, you've said it all, I couldn't agree more. |
Baba_O:If I were you I'll just swallow my pride and accept the correction. Can you please educate me on what "olodo" means ? ![]() |
Now I am no web designer but I know some Nigerian web designers that are good check out Walfam http://walfam.com their portfolio at http://walfam.com/portfolio.html @my2cents I think you should help by giving some advice on how Nigerian web designers can improve. Try some articles on the web or a blog or , |
If he actually wants to form the so called all inclusive goferment,Ha ha ha, Baba_O, I never knew that Yoruba accent can be visible in writing ![]() Forgive me please but I just can't hold back my laughter. By the way the right spelling is government not goferment ![]() this malam people don start again o,I smell some tribalism in this so I prefer not comment further I think the question we should ask ourselves is ; is it constitutionally Ok to appoint Kingibe. As a Nigerian I don't give a damn about OBJ and 'Yar Adua's family relationship. We are suppose to have a democracy not a monarchy. , even information that Yar Adua did not know, I can't say it over the internet.Wow we have a insider on Nairaland, what an honour ![]() By the way @nigeria1, the post we are talking about is SGF not SSG. |
Alright, Alright, I think all these views are biased towards what we prefer (web based or standalone) but the truth is that web based apps have their place in the IT universe and will NEVER replace standalone apps. ![]() You see the web based apps need standalone apps to run. For example before you run a typical web based app, you need a browser which is a standalone app. Your PHP interpreter is stand alone Your web server is stand alone Your application server is stand alone Your compilers are stand alone. The list goes on and on ![]() The truth is that web based apps cannot exist without stand alone apps. I think all through the argument we have been thinking mostly in terms of enterprise applications. I still cannot imagine how one can create say a video editing software or a compiler as a web based application. By the way, web based technologies come and go very fast. Remember Java applets and ASP ? So guys let's accept it, web based apps are cool but they can not replace standalone apps. |
I think there's something you guys overlooked. OBJ did work with Kingibe. Until his recent appointment as SGF, Kingibe was on a special assignment in Darfur. He was appointed by OBJ. Just a point of correction for those saying that he was appointed because he is Hausa. I think those people have a very small knowledge of Nigeria's ethnic setup. Kingibe is Kanuri and not Hausa. Please guys not all Northerners are Hausas. In fact many Northerners are not Hausas. Please, please there is more to Nigeria than Lagos and Ibadan. Travel out and see Nigeria, maybe it will help drop some ethnic prejudices. BTW, I personally am not a fan of Kingibe but I do not want 'Yar Adua to be taking orders from Obasanjo. |
Here's an Idea If the rich Classes keep the rich members private then you can try using reflection to get all the members. You can then pick the rich members, cast the ones that can be converted to wealth type and throw away the rest. So what do you guys thing, will it work ? |
fekuti:Is that a request or command ![]() Here take www.bloodshed.net/devcpp.html ![]() |
Yeah, you can develop web apps with .NET. The advantage is that it's a lil bit easier. But talking about speed am not sure it's faster than PHP (I mean in web apps) Although I've never came across any comparison. If you know PHP and you're only developing for the web, I think you can go on with it. But it will be good to learn .NET cos you might discover many things in it that you have been longing for. |
sosoella:The same reason that christians pray with their eyes closed. That's what's required by the religion. @sosoella, things that are common to you may also be uncommon to other people. That's why we're all different. For example some people find it hard to understand why christians sing and dance as a religious practice. Be prepared to come across many uncommon things as you learn more and meet more people. Just don't assume your way of doing things is the "common" or "right" way. The world is so big and people so diverse. The earlier you accept that, the happier you will be. |
@Pojutime, becareful not to inherit a class with null members. That won't make you rich. ![]() Hey fellas, don't you think we need one or two light threads like this on the programmers forum ? We tend to always show our serious sides. Programmers aren't programs, they have a sense of humor ![]() |
Hey,Hey,Heyyy ![]() Why do we worry so much about our ages. Think of it this way, it wasn't your doing that you are born at a certain date and time. You completely have no control over it. That's why when people sometimes try to attack me by calling me a "small boy", I consider that as a sign of stylishly accepting defeat. ![]() Look sis, If age is something to worry about you wouldn't even fall in love with him in the first place. The same way that you don't have control over age, you also don't have control over love. As the saying goes "Attraction is not by choice" When it comes to marriage, my idea is like this:You don't choose who to fall in love with, you chose whom you have fallen in love with. So go ahead and get married. The families? Oh the families, I almost forgot. They either understand gradually or give up gradually. That's if they didn't accept it in the first place. |
Yeah BLOB is the data type you need. And it's not specific to Oracle database only. Any mature Database Management System must have a blob type. By the way, you didn't tell us which database management system you are using. As Fdeveloper said, you may need to leave access, if that's what you are using. You may also consider Firebird(http://firebirdsql.org) as it has an embedded version that gives you the compactness of small databases like access and Sqlite and also the power of big server databases like Oracle and MSSQL plus it takes only 1.44Mb of hard disk space and can be bundled and deployed with your application. |
Hey, I like this riddle. I once came across something similar to it . There're many answers to it depending on the way you see it. Don't take it too serious, it's just a way of seeing how much in terms of Objects do programmers think ![]() I asked some programmer friends the same question and got different interesting answers. One of them said that you should try to cast all your data to "Money" type. Somebody else wrote a code snippet of a money spinning machine. ![]() Just try it may be we'll come across the answer he has in mind. It's fun |
1-You can run both VB.NET and VB6 on the same computer. They two different things that do not conflict. 2- Yeah dotNET comes with documentation (A lot). The documentation helps a lot as a refference material but getting a book will really increase your speed. |
