Nairaland GeneralRe: Why Aren't Men Emotional? by IG: 9:08pm On May 06, 2006
Because they are making a conscious or subconscious choice.
if i get it right "subconcious" means below the level of awareness. Doesn't that means it's in their design ?

Pls being less emotional is no crime. In fact most women don't like guys that are too emotional.
chinani, I know you won't like a husband who would be crying over a problem he had with his boss.
RomanceRe: Why Do Men Marry? by IG: 8:59pm On May 06, 2006
Poeple keep saying that men get married because GOD wants them to. Is it not the same GOD that forbids fornication? Why follow one command and ignore others. I think most saying GOD,GOD on this thread are just trying to find an escape route.

To me the reason for marriage is that
1. At some point in your life you come across a girl
2. She makes you believe you are in love
3 You begin to believe you are in love
4. You lose the greater part of your sanity
5. You make the mistake of getting married.

Marriage is as a result of an accident called "Love". That is why poeple "Fall" in love and not "Get into" love. grin grin grin grin

chinani:
@IG
If it is a design issue then why are there so many variations in design? With so many varitaions, isn't it possible to say that it's really a matter of choice?
The variations are part of the design of the whole universe. Design in nature is not like engineering design that you make use of exact numeric values.
In trying to mimick nature engineers have to adapt models that allow for variations. e.g Artificial Neural Networks and Fuzzy Logic. I don't want to divert too much, the point is that variations can be part of design.

If it's a matter of choice then why do more women choose to emotional and more men choose to be less emotional ?
Nairaland GeneralRe: Why Aren't Men Emotional? by IG: 8:30pm On May 05, 2006
IF YOU BELIEVE IN GOD:
What I mean by design issue is that is how men are created.
Just like the fact like men cannot give birth.
When we talk of creation we only tend to think of physical things and forget concepts like fear, anger , shame e.t.c. Everything you can think of is a creation. Even ideas are creations in your mind.

NATURAL SELECTION: Over time men need to do things that requires they be brave. Things like protecting a territory, hunting , raids e.t.c. As you know bravery is not the absence of fear but the ability to overcome it. This gives most men the ability to hide many feelings apart from fear, since fear is one feeling that is very difficult to hide.

Note that the above are not theories, but my own views which I believe are OK.

The "or what ?" part of my statement means that the list is not complete. You can add anything you feel is important.
Nairaland GeneralRe: Why Aren't Men Emotional? by IG: 7:47pm On May 05, 2006
I'm used to studying human nature.
Good and I find studying poeple like you very interesting.

The emotion thing is a "design issue". If you believe in GOD then, it's how man is created.

And if you believe in natural selection then men became like that so as to survive.
ProgrammingWhat Makes A Good Program by IG(op): 7:41pm On May 05, 2006
From a programmer's view what do you think makes a good program ?
Is it small size, small memory footprints, execution speed, small amount of dependencies or what ?
ProgrammingRe: What Aspect Of Programming Gives You Problems? by IG: 7:09pm On May 05, 2006
What I hate most is writing user documentation. It's such a boring thing to do.
And without it most programs are difficult to use.

ProgrammingRe: Compiler And Os Design Project. by IG: 8:58pm On May 01, 2006
I think that's a good idea.
But when developing the OS we can build it on top of the linux kernel instead of re-inventing the wheel.
As for the compiler we can target an existing platform (java or dotNET). Imagine coding in VB but compiling to java bytecode.

Car TalkRe: How Much Are Gas Prices In Nigeria? by IG: 5:03pm On May 01, 2006
Before saying gas is cheap in Nigeria, think of the income of the average Nigerian. In my area, a fresh university graduate working with the state government earns approximately N13,000 ($92) a month(remember millions like him are unemployed). The last time I know the price of a bag of rice, it was N3500 ($25) and that of sugar was N7000 ($50). I think we have every reason to want to crucify the government.

PoliticsRe: Arabic Inscriptions On Naira by IG: 8:07pm On Apr 26, 2006
@Rhea I hope my facts are appreciated.

It is funny that in Nigeria muslims and christians see each other
as rivals. There is never a time in Islamic history where genuine muslims
view christians as enemies. In fact the first person to give refuge to early muslims is the
christian King Negus of Abysynnia (now Ethiopia).
I think in Nigeria we are allowing our sentiments and some selfish religious leaders to rule us.

The christian bible said "Thou Shall Know The Truth And The Truth Shall Set You Free"
I think it's a duty on all of us to seek the truth and learn to appreciate it even if we do not like it's source.

@niterider, some more to info about the eagle symbol

PoliticsRe: Arabic Inscriptions On Naira by IG: 3:20pm On Apr 26, 2006
Rhea thanks for challenging my point on the "Eagle". I've realized that I have made a mistake. The eagle is not only a catholic symbol but a chhristian symbol. Now for the facts.

The Eagle is a symbol of Christ and His Divine nature, of regeneration by baptism; it is also an emblem of St. John the Evangelist. As the eagle can gaze upon the shining orb of the sun with steadfast eyes, so can Christ gaze undazzled upon the refulgent glory of God the Father.
But you have the right not to believe me. For more info checkout the following page http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/02576b.htm

Please friends let's open our minds.
PoliticsRe: Arabic Inscriptions On Naira by IG: 4:26pm On Apr 24, 2006
It's a pity that poeple that I expect to be enlightened can be so narrow minded. Arabic is not the same as Islam. The ajami writing on the naira is not intended for Hausas alone but for all the groups that use Hausa as their lingua franca. It should be noted that Hausa has been an official language in many parts of the North a long time before colonization and all official documentations are done in ajami. I don't know if the South has an equivalent for ajami or any form of writing prior to coming of the colonial masters. It's as simple as proposing that it should be included on the naira.

The following should also be noted to avoid such blunders in the future

1-Not all Northerners are Hausa's
2-The eagle on the Nigerian court of arms is a catholic symbol
3-Arabic is not the same as islam. In fact 40% of palestinians are christians.
4-The dome is not a requirement in building a mosque. Domes are recognized worldwide as a sign of power.
look at the capitol hill and Kremlin.

Please Nigeria is a federation you must learn to tolerate. For example muslims are not required to rest on sundays
but have accepted sunday as weekend and friday as work day.
Our university system is a christian system(Deans,Chancellors e.t.c). The graduation gowns we wear are choir outfits.
"Minister" is a church title.

And for all my Lagosian friends, There is more to Nigeria than just Lagos and Ibadan. Take a tour to other parts of Nigeria and you will know how much you have been missing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but with facts.

ProgrammingRe: Database For My Workplace by IG: 8:49pm On Apr 05, 2006
I think the best kept secret in the relational database world is FireBird. It's a server database with a very small memory footprint, high concurrency, stored procedures/triggers. It also has an embedded version that developers can distribute with their applications. The server version can be run from a memory stick. Above all it's free even for commercial use.
The database can be held in a single file and a database file can grow to a maximum of 4 terabytes. More files can be attached to to the database at will.

DONT use access, it doesn't take more than 1G of data, breaks down easily and breaks down when many connections are made to the same database. Firebird is the way to go. I discovered it when searching an alternative for Access.

Since you are good with VB you can download the ZStyle IBOLE provider to use with ADO. I can't remember the download url but you can do a google.

checkout

ProgrammingRe: Anybody Conversant With QT GUI Toolkit? by IG: 8:19pm On Apr 05, 2006
Primarily I don't program in C++ but based on my knowledge of Qt I think it's more straight forward than GTK+ or MFC. If you are using it on Linux then you can use a tool called Qt designer to visually design your interfaces. I do not know whether Qt designer for windows exist, since the windows version of Qt is not open source. Although I once came across an open source implementation of Qt but it's not from trolltech (the company that created Qt). You can do a google to find more.
In a nutshell, I think if I'm a C++ programmer Qt will my GUI toolkit of choice.
ProgrammingRe: Java Has Failed! by IG: 8:34pm On Apr 04, 2006
I believe there is a lot of truth in the failure of java. Despite being a fan of Java I must state the following
The dotNET platform also called the CLI (common language infrastructure) offers you much more than java offers.

-Java is not the only platform independent programming language. C# on mono can run on almost all known OS'es
-Calling native code in java is extremely horrible, C# allows you to call native code without generating any dirty header files
-Java is not open source , C# has up to two open source implementations (mono & pnet)
-The Java platform restricts you to a single programming language while dotNET gives you a choice of serveral programming languages.
-C#/CIL gives you serveral features like delegates and multiple inheritence that are not available in Java.
-Everybody knows that java is extremely slow and will never run as fast enough for many computing needs

The power of the CIL can be seen in the mono platform where a whole platform is implemented in C#. The mono C# compiler and all other related tools were written in C#.

The whole thing shouldn't be about Microsoft vs SUN but about good technology and dirty technology.

We ought not to be embarrased about appreciating the truth
and obtaining it from wherever it comes from, even if it
comes from races distant and nations different from us.
Nothing should be dearer to the seeker of truth than the
truth itself and their is no deterioration of the truth,
nor belittling either of one who speaks it or conveys it.
