May 10 (Reuters) - Four Russian regional governors resigned on Tuesday as the country braces for the impact of economic sanctions. The heads of the Tomsk, Saratov, Kirov and Mari El regions announced their immediate departures from office, while the head of Ryazan region said he would not run for another term. Elections are scheduled to take place in all five regions in September. Though Russian regional governors are elected, they are politically subordinate to the Kremlin. Several of the outgoing governors represent regions where the ruling bloc United Russia took weak vote shares in parliamentary elections last year. Unpopular governors are regularly removed from office, often submitting their resignations in clusters in the spring months. Ilya Grashchenkov, head of the Centre for the Development of Regional Politics think tank in Moscow, said the Kremlin was removing weak governors amid a worsening economic outlook for the country, driven by Western sanctions. Grashchenkov said: “There’s a need to restructure the economy, especially in those regions where Western economic influence had been significant. These governors need to be replaced by younger alternatives.” The Russian economy is set to contract by 8.8% in 2022, the economy ministry has said https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/four-russian-governors-resign-sanctions-bite-2022-05-10/

The map as at yesterday with Ternova encircled and still under Russian occupation

Loving this Forbes analysis especially the Hammer and Anvil part as they pivot from Ternova to face Izium and smash their way through the Russian gains there. Ukrainains are brave hearts and resolute Attacking from the North and South of Izium. I pity the Russian troops who would be trapped in the middle ![]() |
May 10, 2022,08:54pm EDT Ukrainian forces around Kharkiv, in northeastern Ukraine, appear to have pushed Russian troops east past Ternova, a settlement on the Russian border. If confirmed, the Ukrainians’ liberation of Ternova could mark an inflection point in Russia’s 10-week-old wider war in Ukraine. In late March, Ukrainian forces drove Russian invaders from northern Ukraine. Now it appears they’re driving the invaders from northeastern Ukraine, too. Heavy fighting continues around Izium, south of Kharkiv—and also around Kherson on Ukraine’s Black Sea coast. The Russians late last month briefly advanced around Kherson before stalling out. And Russian battalions more recently have captured a few settlements around Izium. But those Russian gains are in jeopardy owing to Ukrainian gains around Kharkiv, a city of 1.4 million just 25 miles from Russia. As the Russian front collapses around Kharkiv, it could free up powerful Ukrainian brigades to push south, toward Izium, potentially tipping the fighting there in Kyiv’s favor. The general staff of the Ukrainian armed forces was the first to hint at the Russian retreat across the border near Kharkiv. Battalions from the 138th Separate Mechanized Brigade, part of the Russian 6th Combined Arms Army, fled across the border to the Belgorod region of Russia “due to significant losses,” the general staff stated on Tuesday. If indeed the Ukrainian forces around Kharkiv, including the battle-hardened 92nd and 93rd Mechanized Brigades, have pushed all the way to the Russian border, they not only can prevent Russian artillery from targeting Kharkiv—they could fire their own guns at Russian staging areas on the far side of the border. And they also would be free to pivot right and head toward Izium, 60 miles south of Kharkiv. The Russian army has 99 front-line battalion tactical groups in Ukraine. A dozen of the best BTGs slowly are advancing in fits and starts south and west past Izium. Think of any Ukrainian brigades rolling toward Izium from the north as a hammer. The Ukrainian brigades south of Izium, including the 4th and 17th Tank Brigades and the 95th Air Assault Brigade, would be the anvil. The conditions are becoming clearer for a major Ukrainian victory. Monday, May 9th was Victory Day in Russia—the day the country celebrates its defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945. Many observers expected Russian president Vladimir Putin to use Victory Day as an opportunity to announce a major escalation of the war in Ukraine. That didn’t happen. The Russians might not be losing the war quite yet. But they’re definitely not winning it. The Kremlin clearly assumed Ukraine’s defenders would cave soon after Russian tanks crossed the border on the morning of Feb. 24. They didn’t cave. And 76 days later, Ukraine’s army arguably is as strong as ever. Its reserves have mobilized. It has captured more than 1,200 Russian vehicles. It’s finally begun using in combat some of the hundreds of artillery pieces that the United States and other allies have donated. “Russia's underestimation of Ukrainian resistance and its 'best case scenario' planning have led to demonstrable operational failings, preventing President Putin from announcing significant military success in Ukraine at the ... Victory Day parade,” the U.K. Defense Ministry explained. What happens next depends on Kyiv’s assessment of its own strength—and Moscow’s weakness. Do Ukrainian commanders believe Russia lacks the reserves to re-invade northeastern Ukraine? If so, will these commanders send south the two best brigades in the Kharkiv area? And can those brigades sustain an advance all the way to Izium in order to initiate what could be one of the most important battles of the war? https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.forbes.com/sites/davidaxe/2022/05/10/ukrainian-troops-appear-to-have-fought-all-the-way-to-the-russian-border/amp/ Mynd44 Lalasticlala Seun

Maria Alyokhina spoke to The New York Times about how she escaped Russia and Belarus to Lithuania. "If your heart is free, it doesn't matter where you are," she told the outlet. The oft-jailed leader of Pussy Riot — the Russian feminist performance and protest group that has long been a thorn in Vladimir Putin's side — escaped Russia by dressing as a food courier to evade authorities. Maria Alyokhina spoke to The New York Times after crossing into Lithuania following a week-long journey that included spy-like deception and multiple border-crossing attempts. "A lot of magic happened last week," she told The Times. "It sounds like a spy novel." Alyokhina is no stranger to Russian crackdowns on free speech. The activist has been jailed several times in the years since Pussy Riot burst on the scene more than a decade ago, using punk music to mock the corrupt relationship between the Kremlin and the Russian Orthodox Church. But Russia's persistent attempts to silence Alyokhina — she was jailed six times since last summer, according to The Times — have done little to stifle her and her group mates' activism. Alyokhina told the outlet she was dedicated to remaining in Russia in spite of ongoing scrutiny from authorities until the country invaded Ukraine in February. Alyokhina said she was sitting in a jail cell when she heard Putin's speech on February 21 that would ultimately set the stage for full-out war. "I don't think Russia has a right to exist anymore," she told The Times. "Even before, there were questions about how it is united, by what values it is united, and where it is going. But now I don't think that is a question anymore.". In the months since Russia launched its invasion, Putin has escalated his efforts to crack down on opposition to the war in Ukraine. Alyokhina's pending house arrest was converted to 21 days in a penal colony, she told the outlet, leading her to make the decision to try and escape. In an interview with The Times, she described the steps she took to get away, including dressing as a food deliverer to bypass Moscow police who were stationed outside her friend's apartment where she was staying. She left without her cellphone out of fear of being tracked. One of her friends then drove her to the Belarusian border, she told the newspaper. She was stuck in the Russian-friendly country for a week before she was able to enter Lithuania. She had already been placed on a Russian "wanted" list and said she avoided hotels or anywhere she would have to provide identification. On her third attempt, she was finally able to cross into Lithuania, she told the outlet, noting the help of a travel document from an unnamed European country. "I was happy that I made it," because it was a blow to Russian authorities, Alyokhina said. "I still don't understand completely what I've done." Other members of the Pussy Riot collective have also joined Alyokhina in Lithuania as part of the growing exodus of Russians, according to the outlet. The group is scheduled to perform in Berlin later this week as part of a European tour to raise funds for Ukraine. Alyokhina said she hopes one day to return to her native Russia, though the possibility of that happening anytime soon seems unlikely. "If your heart is free, it doesn't matter where you are," she told the outlet. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.businessinsider.com/pussy-riot-leader-escaped-russia-disguising-herself-food-courier-2022-5%3famp

May 10, 202212:17 PM GMT Last Updated 5 hours ago Reuters NEUILLY-SUR-SEINE, France, May 10 (Reuters) - The Russian military's failure to seize the Ukrainian capital was inevitable because in the preceding years they had never directly faced a powerful enemy, according to a former mercenary with the Kremlin-linked Wagner Group who fought alongside the Russian army. Marat Gabidullin took part in Wagner Group missions on the Kremlin's behalf in Syria and in a previous conflict in Ukraine, before deciding to go public about his experience inside the secretive private military company. He quit the Wagner group in 2019, but several months before Russia launched the invasion on Feb. 24 Gabidullin, 55, said he received a call from a recruiter who invited him to go back to fighting as a mercenary in Ukraine. He refused, in part because, he said, he knew Russian forces were not up to the job, even though they trumpeted their arsenal of new weapons and their successes in Syria where they helped President Bashar al-Assad defeat an armed rebellion. "They were caught completely by surprise that the Ukrainian army resisted so fiercely and that they faced the actual army," Gabidullin said about Russia's setbacks in Ukraine. He said people he spoke to on the Russian side had told him they expected to face rag-tag militias when they invaded Ukraine, not well-drilled regular troops. "I told them: 'Guys, that's a mistake'," said Gabidullin, who is now in France where he is publishing a book about his experiences fighting with the Wagner Group. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he did not know who Gabidullin was and whether he has ever been a member of private military companies. "We, the state, the government, the Kremlin can not have anything to do with it," he said. The Russian defence ministry did not respond to a request for comment. Russia calls its actions in Ukraine a “special operation” that it says is not designed to occupy territory but to destroy its southern neighbour's military capabilities and capture what it regards as dangerous nationalists. Gabidullin is part of a small but growing cohort of people in Russia with security backgrounds who have supported President Vladimir Putin's foreign incursions but now say the way the war is being conducted is incompetent. Igor Girkin, who helped lead a pro-Kremlin armed revolt in eastern Ukraine in 2014, has been critical of the way this campaign is being conducted. Alexei Alexandrov, an architect of the 2014 rebellion, told Reuters in March the invasion was a mistake. Gabidullin took part in some of the bloodiest Syrian clashes in Deir al-Zor province, in Ghouta and near the ancient city of Palmyra. He was seriously injured in 2016 when a grenade exploded behind his back during a battle in the mountains near Latakia. Gabidullin spent a week in a coma and three months in a hospital where he had surgeries to remove one of his kidneys and some intestines. Reuters has independently verified he was in the Wagner Group and was in combat in Syria. Wagner Group fighters have been accused by rights groups and the Ukrainian government of committing war crimes in Syria and eastern Ukraine from 2014 onwards. Gabidullin said he had never been involved in such abuses. DIFFERENT PROPOSITION Moscow's involvement helped turn the tide of the Syrian war in favour of al-Assad, but Gabidullin said Russia's military restricted itself mainly to attacks from the air, while relying on Wagner mercenaries and other proxies to do the lion's share of the fighting on the ground. The Russian military's task was easier too. Its opponents -- Islamic State and other militias -- had no anti-aircraft systems or artillery. Fighting Ukraine, he said, was a different proposition. "I've seen enough of them in Syria... (The Russian military) didn't take part in combat directly," he said in an interview in Paris to promote his book, which will be published by French publishing house Michel Lafon this month. "The military forces .... when it was needed to learn how to fight, did not learn how to fight for real," he said. Wagner Group is an informal entity, with -- on paper at least -- no offices or staff. The U.S. Treasury Department and the European Union have said the Wagner Group is linked to Russian businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin. Prigozhin has denied any such links. Concord Management and Consulting, Prigozhin’s main business, did not respond to a request for comment. President Vladimir Putin has said private military contractors have the right to work and pursue their interests anywhere in the world as long as they do not break Russian law. Putin has said the Wagner Group neither represented the Russian state nor was paid by it. Gabidullin said although he had known the Russian invasion of Ukraine was coming, he did not expect it to be on such a scale. "I could not even think that Russia will wage a war on Ukraine. How could that be? It's impossible," he said. https://www.reuters.com/world/us/russian-troops-ill-prepared-ukraine-war-says-ex-kremlin-mercenary-2022-05-10/ Mynd44 Lalasticlala Seun

DerrickzB:Unless you consider yourself as one of those Russian bots who are dumb then your answer is from a place of guilt and confirmation of how dumb you are because my comment was "SOME OF YOU RUSSIAN BOTS ARE DUMB" and it was not directed at you but a sweeping comment but here you are accepting being dumb with your full chest. Playermayweda:An empty school utilized by soldiers is totally different from a school used by Civilians for shelter. Did you hear that any Soldier was killed in this bombed school building? Only civilians |
Dalil8:How dumb can you be? How can you claim this is a kindergarten when even the basketball is for adults and from the height of the soldiers it shows it's a standard basketball hoop for very tall people. How on Earth would you call this a kindergarten? They are clearly in an empty school complex which is being used as their bunker. Same way the civilians were in the building which was bombed by Russians Wrong Intel or just crass wicked stupidity was behind that bombing and If I was to choose one I would choose the latter. Russians have been known to hit civilian structures and civilians as a weapon of demoralization. They did same in Syria so their blueprint is the same. Kill and destroy as much as they can aimlessly and as brutally as possible. They leave soldiers and focus on civilians as the cowards they are

DerrickzB:Some of you Russian bots are simply so dumb to say the least. Watch the video and see that they switched from thermal to live inbetween bombing runs as if they knew people like you who are dumb enough not to know the difference between video game footage and reality would try and dispute it. |

By Dylan Malyasov- May 8, 2022 Ukrainian Navy released a video of a military drone hit on Russian two more Raptor-class boats in the Black Sea. Ukrainian Naval Forces footage appears to show a Bayraktar TB2 drone hitting Russian patrol boats near Zmiinyi Island, commonly known as Snake Island, in the Black Sea. In the video, the unmanned combat aerial vehicle drops laser-guided bombs on Raptor class patrol boats. Raptor-class boats can also be used for promptly transporting up to 20 marines, intercepting and detaining small targets and carrying out search and rescue operations in the areas of their patrolling. The Project 03160 patrol boat is armored and outfitted with a remotely operated weapon station with a 14.5mm machine gun and two 7.62mm Pecheneg machine guns on bracket mounts. The boat is 16.9 meters long and 4.1 meters wide and has a crew of three. It can develop a speed of up to 50 knots. Just this week, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense also shared a dramatic video showing the apparent destruction of two Russian Navy Raptor class patrol boats in the same area. The Ukrainian military also has used its Turkish-supplied drones to destroy a pair of Russian patrol craft. In addition, on Saturday, the Ukrainian Forces struck on a Project 11770 Serna class landing craft at Snake Island’s boat ramp. The landing craft-utility (LCU) boat can be seen with a Tor surface-to-air missile system onboard, according to The Warzone. https://www.google.com/amp/s/defence-blog.com/ukrainian-drone-destroys-two-more-russian-raptor-patrol-boats/%3famp Mynd44 Lalasticlala Seun
