Politics › Buhari Writes CJN Over Decongestion Of Prisons Amid COVID-19 Pandemic by ignis(op): 8:23pm On Apr 21, 2020 |
President Muhammadu Buhari has called for urgent measures towards the speedy trial of cases and decongestion of custodial centres in the country in view of COVID-19 outbreak.
Buhari in a letter to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, drew his attention to the recent call by the United Nations.
He said, “From available records, the inmates population at various custodial centres across the country presently stands at about 74,127 out of which 52,226 are Awaiting Trial Persons (ATPs).
“Most of these custodial centres are presently housing inmates beyond their capacities and the overcrowded facilities pose a potent threat to the health of the inmates and the public in general in view of the present circumstances, hence the need for urgent steps to bring the situation under control.
“In view of the above scenario, it has become imperative for Your Lordship to request State Chief Judges to embark on immediate visit to all custodial/correctional centres within their respective States to identify and release deserving inmates where that has not been done already.”
The President noted that during such visits, the chief judges are to consider conditional or unconditional release of ATPs who have spent six years or more in custody.
He said, “ATPs who have no confirmed criminal cases against them, aged inmates and terminally ill may be discharged.
“It is expected that particular attention should be on the aged, those with health issues, low risk offenders, those with no sufficient legal basis to remain in custody, inmates convicted for minor offences with or without option of fines and inmates who have less than three years term left to serve having served a substantial term of their service for offences that attract five years and above.
“Payment of fines may be made in favour of inmates convicted of lesser offences with option of fine, who are in custody because of their inability to pay such fines.”
Buhari said a report on the proposed visit is expected to be forwarded to the Presidential Committee on Correctional Service Reform and Decongestion Secretariat, Federal Ministry of Justice, Abuja, for compilation and onward transmission to his office. http://saharareporters.com/2020/04/21/breaking-buhari-writes-cjn-over-decongestion-prisons-amid-covid-19-pandemic

Armed Fulani herdsmen have attacked villages in Southern Kaduna and killed four people while razing houses.
The villages affected are Unguwan Magaji, Kamaru Chawai and Kauru.

The attackers numbering over 100, came by 6:45pm from behind the hills that serves as boundary between Kaduna and Plateau states.
The statement reads, "They attacked from four flanks causing confusion and pandemonium among unsuspecting villagers as youths tried to fend them off."
Those killed in the attack include a 58-year-old mother of five, Hannatu Joseph, Sarah Sunday, a mother of six, Dije Sajay, a 55-year-old woman with six children and Sunday David, a former civil servant.

Not automatic. You will still need to apply for the post study visa. Students who work more than 20 hours term time wont be qualified. Also, students will need to pass and successfully graduate. Some students will fail.
Notwithstanding, if you begin your MSc in September 2020, you will be eligible for Post study Work visa.
Also current undergraduate and postgraduate students who will graduate in the summer of 2021 are eligible. Thanks for the clarification |

I blame our leaders for this.
Most Nigerian ladies travel to Dubai, Italy, Lebanon and other countries for voluntarily prostitution.
Even in our Country Nigeria, similar things are happening. 95% of staff in most organization like banks are contract staff. The bank outscored job to selfish companies and pay salaries to the outsourcing firm who pays the contract staff a little penny from the huge sum. What is the difference ?
Even if the whites come to Nigeria to buy people for trafficking, majority of the youths will voluntarily follow them. Our leaders have made the future bleak in this country. |

Every state needs FG funding.
But FG have flopped by giving only Lagos state N10 billion and allocating only N5 billion to NCDC for the whole Nigeria.
Just that you governors will definitely loot any fund you are given.
Thieves. If Lagos was given 10 billion naira, don't you think Kano state deserve similar amount of money, considering the population ? |

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has called on the federal government to provide the state with financial assistance in its fight against the spread of COVID-19 as figures of those infected surges up. “We started a few weeks ago, we were few but since it started in Kano, look at the speed with which it is going. I think we need urgent financial assistance to Kano state” Ganduje stated. He made the call on Monday while receiving the Director-General of the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu who was on a tour of the state to access the level of preparedness in the fight against the disease. Describing how far the state has gone in preventing the spread of the disease Ganduje said “we have done a lot, collected over N500m, collected items which we will very soon start distributing, constituted grassroots committees that will ensure only those households that are identified as the poorest of the poor that will be provided with the palliative, but so far no financial assistance from the federal government and we are number three in terms of the infection. He further expressed that Kano state needs more support at this point than Lagos state due to it’s falling level of the economy saying “we know Lagos economy today is much better than the economy of Kano, the acceptance of public enlightenment is higher in Lagos than that of Kano, we all know this fact.” Ganduje further stated that he has since signed some adjustments in the public infectious disease regulations to allow for the proper conviction of those who might violate some basic instructions regarding curbing the spread of the disease in the state including journalists “To taken care of this unusual situation, with unusual behaviour by members of the public we decided to modify our public health infectious diseases regulations, which I have signed on the 16th of this month. That is taking care of the misdoings of those who are not ready to follow the regulations as prescribed by the Presidential Task Force. “Gatherings, movement of people, social distancing, personal hygiene and most importantly even members of the press who give false information to confuse the members of the public, either due to ignorance or due to political differences, that regulation has taken care of that. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/04/ganduje-seeks-fg-funding-to-fight-covid-19/ |
