Pls dont take it personal, learning is a continuous process. We learn everyday. Atleast I have learned many new things from your posts.
Thanks.

You are right. Now i get what you are saying.
Politics › Re: Oil Discovered In Sokoto State by ignis: 3:12pm On Aug 26, 2012
geosegun: I beg to disagree sir,

Pan African Orogeny (Mainly in Jos and called younger granite) occurred about 600Ma and that was late proterozoic/early Phanerozoic era.
Cretaceous period only ended about 65Ma. The evolution of the Upper and Lower Benue trough bagan during the Mesozoic(Tri-Jur-Cret).
and it was due to up-doming (upwelling through the asthenosphere) that occured during Juraasic-Cretaceous period, this brought about the opening of 2-arms (the south and northwestern Atlantic). The 3rd arm is the Benue truogh which fails to complete the division of African plate. Hence called the failed arm of the Niger Delta.
Geological terminology for this process is Aulacogen.

NB: I know you know what you are saying but no one is above mistake.

YES I KNOW WHAT I AM SAYING and I am sure of every sentence put down and i can back it up anytime cool cool.
Youngman, i feel you know too much, and that's just the problem here. You are right, but you are involving an entirely different thing here.
Is the formation of aulacogen (the failed arm of Niger delta) in the Rift-Rift-Rift tripple junction as a result of orogeny or as a result of plate tectonics? If its orogeny, what is the name of the orogeny and what time did it occur?
And when was the last orogeny that affected Nigeria?

geosegun: Did u know what u are saying at all?. Are you sure you read my comments?
If you do not understand geology/simple expression of English Language, then, please let someone help you out.

I was referring to very high temperature-such that can only emanates from asthenosphere during orogeny.
I said that it is an hypothesis. Please google the word 'hypothesis' b4 you start to make further comments
I believe OW11 understands me clearly.

I was only trying to buttress my point about diamond being formed/found within Enugu coal-according to afam4,
that it is only possible if the hypothesis as proposed by some scientists were found to be true. which I doubt too.
The enugu Coal has not been directly affected by orogeny.

Please, read carefully next time before u make any comment and ask questions if you dont understand, there is no shame/crime in that.
If you do not, well you know what that means?
All the best man.
Geosegun, it's either u dont know wat u are saying or u are mixing up words. Do u actually know what an orogeny is? An orogeny is the long process of sedimentation, igneous activity, deformation, metamorphism and finally cratonization. If the Afam clay or any of the sedimentary formation undergo orogeny, magma will erupt and form igneous rock, it will also metamorphose the sedimentary formation to a metamorphic rock ranging from slate to schist depending on the garde of the matamorphism. Mind you, the last orogeny in nigeria happend during the Jurassic ( the pan african orogeny) which led to the younger granite emplacement in Jos. African has been fully cratonized, its a stable platform and i don't thick any other orogeny can occur in Africa again.

ow11: I Like your confidence!! However, you have made some corrections which is the goal of my initial comment.

1. Coal DOES NOT form diamonds! Diamonds are thought to form at the asthenosphere.

2. The coal in Enugu belongs to the Mamu Formation (Campanian to Early Maastrichtian age). The Campanian is a stage in the Upper Cretaceous NOT Tertiary as you are suggesting. No Danian fossils have been found in and around the coal measures in Enugu.

3. Structural deformation have occured within and after the Tertiary period in the Anambra basin which explains the presence of faulting and fractures in the Enugu area. Orogeny is a type of structural deformation particularly linked with building of highlands which is NOT in anyway responsible for the production of gas from coal.

4. Simple subsidence is responsible for the maturation of coal to yield gas within the Anambra basin.
Please tell him... Am not sure he has attended any geology lecture in his life. If not how can one say that diamond is formed when coal is subjected to high temperature and pressure? He even made a mess of himself by saying that when coal undergo orogeny it it gives rise to oil and gas. SMH.
He does not even know common geological timescale. Even most people who are not geologist have geological timescale at their finger tip, not to talk about somebody who claims he is one.
Its one thing to be a geologist, its another thing to explain the presence of oil in Sokoto!!

Use stratigraphic maps to explain your point...

https://www.earthzine.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Figure-24.jpg

I just provided you one so fire on... Mind you, I'm also a Gelogical Engineer.. cool

Well with the presence of Sandstones, Clay & Shale in Sokoto, Mesozoic- Recent volcanic and sedimentary rocks, which is about the same stratigraphy of rocks in the Niger Delta region.. The Sokoto Basin has always been suspected geologically to be hydrocarbon bearing..
Sir, please don't go outside nairaland and tell anybody that you are a geological engineer cos u might receice the mocking of your life. Back to your stratigraphic map, the stratigraphy of sokoto basin and Niger delta basin are not related. So comparing them is like comparing apple and orange. The niger delta basin is part of the large Dahomey basin while sokoto basin is part of the iuellemeden basin. And mind you, for hydrocarbon to accumulate, we need reservoir rock, source rock, trap and seal. Am a northerner, just being honest. So dont say am trying to beef the north. I would be very happy if economic hydrocarbon is found in the north.

warrior01: Just heard on AIT that oil has been discovered in Sokoto state. It was confirmed by the governor in an interview. Wishing them the very best

http://pmnewsnigeria.com/2012/08/21/sokoto-has-abundant-crude-oil-deposits-says-wammako/
As a geologist, i strongly agree that there is oil in sokoto basin which is a sub-basin of the large Iullemeden basin. Part of Niger republic also belongs to this Iullemeden basin which has a viable prospect for hydrocarbon accumulation. But the fact is that the oil deposit in Sokoto is not yet available in economical quantity and cannot be profitably exploited at present. This means that the total technological cost involved in getting oil from the basin will be more than the market price which it can be sold. So no oil company can even partake in such deal. The Governor should save us such rigmarole of sufficient viable oil in his state.
