Some of the funding was loans that were repayable and a large portion went to the US to make US weapons,which was basically aid to US companies and US states making those weapons (largely Republican).
The US generally doesn't do anything without a selfish motivation.
I wrote many times that part of the reason the US was supporting Ukraine because of the minerals and grain and to keep them away from Russia.
The US was always going to make a deal re: minerals. But they would have done it without seeming to betray them and still keeping their goodwill.

South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and all former Soviet States currently in the EU are proof of the benefits of Western partnership.
