Very good advice all round especially from T22. I dont want to repeat all the good advice already shared but let me add a couple uncommon ones based on my experience in investment banking for many years. Let me summarise the picture of a typical investment banker:
1. Ability to balance intelligence and excellent social skills. The job requires long hard hours, so as a VP i never recruited "geeks" that would make the office any more boring/stressful than it already was. You must enjoy hanging out with the boys after work, socialising, mixing (without being lousy). Its a tough balance but whoever interviewing you must see that you a bright but balanced individual.

2. Show passion for investment banking combined with an enterpreneurial spirit in your CV. So before you graduate, start a small business you can talk about in an interview - e.g. publishing a monthly investment journal for your faculty, or an investment blog/website. I looked out for enterpreneurs when hiring my team back then. It didnt matter if the business failed but we wanted graduates who were thinking ahead of their peers in university.

3. Start working on your communications and presentation skills. IB requires you to talk sharply and confidently. A quavering voice with a lack of confidence will get you nowhere even with a 1st class.

4. Invest in a conservative suit, tie and shoes for your interview (no pointed shoes and shiny suits please!!!). Real investment bankers MDs/VPs deal with CEOs/companies that want to raise billions. They dont want junior colleagues that will attend business meetings dressed like Dbanj (no offence to the great dbanj)

5. Broaden your mind - attend as many free seminars, talks,events as possible etc. Invest in buying a paper like BusinessDay everday and visit financial times website daily to understand whats going on in the global financial markets.

6. To really understand the world of investment banking - read "Liars Poker". Its not an academic book, but every investment banking colleague i had in the UK had a copy on their desk. Good luck.

My brother, dont draw tribal comparisons. Prof resigned because he was not a career politician like some of the other desperados in cabinet. He saw that Power Generation (which by the way, can be more lucrative than Oil) was more profitable than the Minister position. Prof has alternative means of income, so doesnt need the Minister portfolio and kudos to him. But when you mention "the other side" also remember that Bola Ige had also handed in his letter of resignation as Attorney General (No.3 man in the country), before he was assasinated. He had no interest in the corruption that was going on at the time. lets recognise men of integrity regardless of their tribe abeg.

Zoning and "Federal Character" will keep holding us back in this country. As a Yoruba man, i was proud to have my Igbo brother run our Power sector. The man was competent and experienced and i respected the progress he made. But personally, if he was from Ghana i wouldnt have cared....as long as he puts an end to this generator and diesel lifestyle...who cares? Right now we have a vacuum in the most important Ministry...despite the fact that there may be a competent replacement from the North or South, Nigerian goverment will down all tools until we find someone from the East (even if he is mediocre). If you are in a car accident and rushed to the hospital, do you ask the Doctor that is about to save you which tribe and local government area he is from before you allow him to treat you? This generation must stop all this backward non-progressive thinking...one day!

We have two camps in our Cabinet. Ministers like Prof and Dr Okonjo_Iweala are unique Ministers because of one simple fact - they have an alternative source of income plus a reputation to protect. They will give 2 fingers and step as soon as you attempt to rubbish them. The other camp of Ministers are political appointees who know absolutely nothing about their portfolios. Their entire life is centered around the Ministerial position....they know nothing else apart from public sector and politics. They would rather die than resign. I dont know the Prof personally but at least the speed with which he bowed out gracefully speaks volumes about his self-respect.

I'm in love with the "idea of Nigeria" - i.e. somewhere i can call home, brotherhood, unity, patriotism, merit-based performance, sense of security and justice, priority over all other foreigners, access to fundamental human rights and medical care, love in the hearts of my neighbours for me and my family,somewhere i can show my children good morals and values, a place where our culture, music, dress and food is exalted above anything foreign, somewhere where i would be proud to wear the army uniform and die for my people during war, knowing that my government will ensure my family is taken care of. A place of hope and honour. Sadly, i cant find any of the above factors in the Nigeria of today. I grew up as a yoruba "Lagos Boy" - "Tribe" was a thing that only old backward men spoke about as all my best friends were igbo, hausa, south-south from everywhere. My fiance of many years was ibo. Today i read the posts on Nairaland and see so much venom from Nigerian kids against their brothers who live across the River Niger, so much hate, anger, fighting an enemy they can not see. meanwhile nobody has taken time to read and understand that the British philosophy of "divide and rule" was perfected by the Nigerian military via creation of States to ensure Nigerians could never unite as one to unseat them. This travesty has been further used as a political tool by various political parties to ensure the people can never speak with one voice. They have built the tower of Babel in Nigeria. Those in power enjoy watching young yoruba men hating young ibos and young hausas hating young south-south...why?? because they can play us against each other and retain control of Abuja. If Nairaland (with all the hatred and venom)is a representation of todays intelligent, exposed and educated Nigerian youth...then sadly the country is finished and will cease to exist in this generation. One thing that amazes me is the inability of most of my brothers to articulate their position sensibly without personalising the matter and raining insults (and sometimes curses) on each other. I happened to visit a police barracks a few years ago and the OP is right in saying our police live under sub-human conditions and we have to give them some kudos. However, the OP needs to be objective and listen to personal experiences of majority of Nigerians when it comes to interactions with the police...often very traumatising. What the Poster needs to do is enlighten us so we can see and appreciate the other side of the story (the deprivation and maltreatment of police by the FGN) and offer some fresh insights that Nairalanders can collectively support (e.g. option of State police or bi-lateral collaboration with Scotland Yard etc). We wont get very far in this country when our generation feels the only way to enlighten people is to abuse and insult them into submission.
