Please, note that it was stated in owners manual that Fuel economy oil or synthetic oil MUST not be used in EW12. Users of D9, 407 & 607 with the EW12 engine, take note. Ikenna. |
I went in search of coolant at a nearby TOTAL filing station and was still told "out of stock". Anyway, i found something else very interesting. I found in TOTAL station all the TOTAL synthetic based and fully sythetic/fuel economy oil recommended by Peugeot for the EW10, EW12, XU10, HDI & ES9J4S engines. Such as Quartz 9000 0W/40; Quartz 9000 5W/30; Quartz 9000 5W/40; Quartz 7000 15W/50. Quartz 7000 15W/50, which synthetic based, cost N4,700. While, Quartz 9000 5W/40, a fully synthetic oil, cost 8k (though, 5 litres). I didn't price the rest. But they were there. The lower the number before "W" (Winter), the easier the engine turns over when starting in cold climates. Then, how cold is our climate? Studies that i carried out on oil grades showed that 5W-30 oil grade are for cooler climates, while 15W-50 are for hot climates. Its left for you to decide if our climate are cool or cold enough to decide whether to go full synthetic or synthetic based oil. I do know that 0W-40 & 5W-40 are full synthetic, while 15W-50 is synthetic based (but do know that we have 15W-50 that is mineral oil, which will be indicated on the container). Full synthetic oil like the 5W-40 is a fuel economy oil. You will get the best fuel economy using that oil. Not only that, you gain more engine performance and power, and lubricates faster or quicker during cold start, which prevents friction and wear at cold start, unlike the mineral oil. But if you ask me, i would say the fully synthetic oil are best for engines that havent done miles more than 100k. Am not sure and i cant prove it. But they are very thin oil and would burn faster in an aged engine, unlike the synthetic based and mineral oil. The lower the number before the "W", the thinner the oil. My point is, almost all the TOTAL oil grades recommended by Peugeot for their listed above engines, are abundantly available in the TOTAL filing stations, scattered all over the country. The grade to use, is your decision to make. Ikenna. |
Does anyone here drive a 406 coupe? Every time that car drives past I almost get an 0rg@$m. I'm seriously considering buying it in Jan 2013. Any advice?
Hi, I don't drive 406 coupe. So i dont know much about it. But i have a friend in Australia who drives one, though V6. He told me oneday that his 406 v6 coupe D8 with ES9J4 consumes fuel more than the saloon 406 v6 D8. And that he believed it was so because the saloon has a better aerodynamics than the coupe. Aside that, he loves his 406 coupe. In fact, he recently swapped in ES9J4S (v6 engine in D9, 407 & 607) in his coupe, since the ES9J4S, though v6, consumes less than the ES9J4, formerly in the car. But lets hear from house members that drive 406 coupe, since they are in a better position to tell how good or bad the car might be. Probably, the I4 petrol naturally aspirated engine will consume less. Also, i do know that all 406 coupe body were produced in Pininfarina plant in Italy, then Peugeot now installed the mechanicals in their own plant. But do know that all 406, both saloon & SW, D8 & D9, were designed by Pininfarina. But as for the coupe, the Pininfarina produced the complete body of the car. I can't think of anyother thing.
The Enugu-Onitsha Express way is motorable...and way better than the Enugu-Port Harcourt Express but only up to Nkwelle Junction (Before the toll gate) where you have to detour and enter Onitsha through the FGGC Onitsha/ GRA axis. If you decide to drive through the toll gate, then you're on you own o... from traffic jam at the new flyover to having to keep switching lanes even to being arrested by the infamous "Ndi mpiawa azu" (Task force) for as much as braking to ask for directions. Ninth mile is probably going to be horrible this christmas, because even when I drove there during my first trip,I almost spent an hour there because of ongoing road repairs. From my picture, you will notice that only one lane is in use. I forsee the major problem just to be at the NInth mile junction itself... further down the roads are now good up to the new market flyover where it becomes a bit bumpy again if you decide to drive through new market. If you however decide to drive straigt on through trans ekulu junction/82 Div, then its a very very smooth stretch.
Thanks. I wont drive upto Nkwelle junction. My journey will end at Awkuzu junction. As for the 9th mile, i will have to wait and do the journey on the 27th or so. I believe the traffic will have reduced by then. Ikenna. |
Travelled to Anambra State last weekend but didnt take so many pics while driving-I'm still waiting for my dash mounted camera to arrive. Stopped at Ninth mile to get plenty Okpa. Tastes lovely
How bad is the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway? Because i will soon drive on it in 2 weeks time. Ah! I missed the Okpa. You just reminded me of what i used to enjoy back then in the East. I hope the 9th mile will be this free during Xmas holiday. I hate spending hours there, when my car has done 7 hrs high speed drive on Abuja-Enugu highway. Ikenna. |
Hi, Please, if your car is giving you issues and you want to post it here for solutions, don't ask a member in particular. Just go ahead and state the problems, so that everyone can contribute. We have been doing that and its very wrong. When you direct your car issues questions to me for solutions, if i don't have a solution or answers to your questions or car issues, you lose getting it from others that may have a better solutions to your car issues. No one knows everything, no matter how good one is in a particular field. We are all here to learn from one another, not just from a particular member or so. You can still send a Personal mail/message to a member you still feel you need to hear his/her own suggestion or opinion on your car issues. Ikenna. |

Still on the thermostat, my friend contacted me this evening and suggested/recommended another brand of thermostat which cost $20.89. He said this particular brand is made from high quality heavy duty stainless steel spring, Brass & Copper power element to preveng corrosion, & for quick response & long life. It also has 4 long stroke for maximum cooling, whatever the 4 long stroke means. Its also self cleaning, he concluded. I checked and read the features myself. So we both concluded i should buy the $20.89 instead of the $10 one i earlier found in the morning. The brand name is BeckArnely or BA. Find in the link below where i do all my online spare parts shopping via my friend over there in US. There is no brand of car parts you wont find there, both the cheap and expensive ones. You choose the ones you can afford, depending on the quality you are after. http://www.rockauto.com/m/mobilecatalog.php Ikenna. |
^^^^^ I entered a new parts shop this morning, with the failed thermostat, asking if they have it. The shop owner was staring at me as "Who is this insane being in my shop this early morning?!!" "When everyone is removing theirs and am asking for new one to put in?", he asked. "How do I expect to find something Nigerians reject in new parts shop?", he kept asking. All I could do was to SMH with pity, because i have no strength to explain the reason of my ïnsanity to anyone that early morning. I just left them quietly. Funny enough, he was seriously staring at me while leaving his shop as "Is this guy really alright?" ![]() I didnt even bother to check anyother shop. Got to work, check online and found it berekete. Couldn't believe it! $10 USD only (about N1,600). I quickly asked my friend in USA to purchase and ship it to me, sharp sharp. I may still find it at Gudu market, but i have had enough of insane stare for the day. After all, i have my back up car, the 605 V6, to be using pending when the thermostat arrives. Funny Country, with funny inhabitants! ![]() Ikenna. |

On my way home from a function this evening, my temp guage caught my attention. The temperature guage was indicating about 100 degree C. Meaning, the temperature has gone above normal operating engine temperture, that is the car was overheating. Apart from the temp guage, it was giving me a pronouced symptom: the engine rpm increasing on its own gradually when car was stationary and enigine idling. I pulled over. I left the engine running, opened the bonnet, and saw the radiator electric fan spinning. I went back into the car switched off the engine came back to the engine bay and met the fan off. Weird! Normally the fan will spin for some seconds or a minute before it goes off after switching the engine off. That then means the radiator wasnt getting back at all or enough coolant in the engine back to the radiator. Two things would caused that: failed water pump or failed thermostat. It was getting late. So it wasnt something i could deal with there. I quickly closed the bonnet and changed my route home. In order to keep the temp close to normal, the car has to be on uninterrupted speed. So i entered Mabushi expressway and speed up home. At 100 km/h, the temp guage came down 92 C, which was at least ok for the engine, though normal is 85 C, when on such speed. I made it home safely and started the diagnosis immediately. First, i started the engine and allowed the temp guage to go up again to the 100 C, as the rpm/engine idle speed started increasing on its own, i touched the lower radiator hose and the thing was damn cold, while the upper hose was extremely hot. All these whiles, the fan remained off this time around. It then confirmed my suspicion: thermostat or water pump failure. I opened the cooling system breed screw a little, to reduced the pressure built up in the engine walls. I then opened the thermostat housing and pulled out the thermostat. Then i needed to check if the water pump was the culprit or not before testing the thermostat. So i left the thermostat housing open, called someone to help me start the car, while i observed in the engine bay what would happen. As soon as the engine started, the coolant started flowing out like a flowing river from the opening the opened thermostat housing. Then it ruled out the water pump, since it was still pumping fluid out of the engine. So, Water pump eliminated from the list. It was time for the thermostat. I put the thermostat in a pot and filled it with water to the level of the thernostat. I set the pot on fire and patiently waited. After some minutes, the water started boiling. I still left it to over boil, to be certain of my test. Then, after some minutes of overboiling, if you would call it that, i now opened the pot. Lo and behold! The thernostat was stuck closed! Not even a small opening! There was the culprit i was looking for: failed/stuck closed thermostat. I hope there is something for all of us to learn from my story. How to drive a car with a suddeb failed thermostat home safely and how to diagnose or test water pump & thermostat. Will look for the thermostat tomorrow and replace it as soon as i find it.
Hi All, All the talk about Car racing on the Abuja Car street racing thread has gotten me all fired up... I Had always wished to get myself a Mercedes w124 E500 and maybe now is the time to start making some serious moves. I do however have a few questions which i would appreciate if they are answered by the pros on this section (as regards the mechanical questions) and the dealers (as regards pricing). I will make the final decision based on all of your expert advice... Thanks in advance. Question 1, looking at that monstrous V8 M119 5.0L Engine, I can already imagine Naija mechanics telling me " Oga, na to convert am to 4 Cylinder toyota corolla engine " So the most important question is how much of a DIY car is it? Siena, your vast experience would be of immense help. is it a DIY car?. In the online fora i've looked at, it seems to be, but then we may not have access to specialized tools here in Nigeria etc..: I do have quite some tools sha... including compression tester, fuel pump pressure meter etc and also have access to some heavy automobile equipment like car lift, power jack etc when necessary. Also is there any info on reliability and any peculiar problems to look out for? Im looking at either the automatic or manual versions... I really don't care which though i guess the manual tranny would be a wiser choice.Question 2, Pricing. The price of a facelift e500 in Mainland Europe is like 12,000 Euros. I was wondering whether it would be cheaper in the UK (its only available as LHD and should probably be a bit cheaper in the UK since its an import and now quite aged... or so i think). Does anybody have an idea of the US price? I prefer the 4 door sedan, but wont mind the 2 door coupe or drop top (convertible) if available. Thanks Guys for your contributions. Please no comments on the following; Fuel economy (i know its thirsty), Safety (I do not intend to race on public congested roads... maybe I'd challenge Ikenna someday when he gets his 406 v6 and we'd try it out on the freeway from abuja to the east ), Age (IMO, its an ageless classic), Thanks Guys for your contributions...
W124 E500 vs 406 V6 D9? No make sense! Since the W124 E500 is RWD, it makes more sence to compete with my RWD 505 V6, even though the benz will dust mine, considering its v8, while my baby is v6. But the handling is what am looking at here. No matter how good a FWD powerful engine car is, there is one handling quality it lacks which RWD powerful engine car posses. You can only tell when you handle both. My 605 v6 was enough to convince me of that. Yes, the 605 v6 is a great handler, but ain't no match to my 505 v6 in handling, when in action. So fun to pull stunts with on high speed! But men! That Benz will be big time MACHINE! See ground clearance and structure! To hell with fuel economy if that car becomes mine, I tell you! Trac is one of those that are in a better position to enlighteen you on the good and annoyances of that Benz. I know nothing about Benz. I just love driving them. Ikenna. |

Do you know what it means to let go off trouble-free everlasting Chain driven PRV V6 engine? Even the engine in this car is more relaible & durable than the ES9J4S in 406. I just cant keep 3 vehicles, thats the reason for the selling. And i reduced the price that low so that it goes before i change my mind. Ikenna. |

Siena: Bro, that wasn't my intention, and I'm sure you know that. The point I'm trying to get across here is, you're an automobile enthusiast, you like decent cars with powerful engines, but you would not race on a public road, despite having ample opportunity to do so. Because you know it's not right. And being an enthusiast doesn't mean we reason differently, and confuse right with wrong. When a child does something wrong, an adult will frown, shout or spank him to get the message accross that what he/she did was wrong. But when a teen does wrong or is going a way that will lead him to damnation, the greatest mistake you will do is to shout on him or use coerce to corrcet the teen, no matter your concern. In this case, you preach. Coercion will push him away from you and he seek solace from peers. And guess what? He will repeatedly do the same thing that annoys you, just to send a message to you "Ain't no kid no more!". Been there. Someone finished his tertiary education, did his NYSC, stayed a little where he served and searched for job, but no way, no job. He went back to his parents and stayed with them, eating whatever they served him and could still give him as pocket money. After 3 years of such frustrated live. Someone comes and give him some ideas on how to make quick money, in dubious or devilish manner. To be honest, only the Grace of God will make the vulnerable frustrated fellow not to fall for that temptation. My point? A petrolhead buys a performance car. After months or years of low speed driving, under utilizing what is under that hood, do you think he wont be once tempted to push it for the hell of it and damn the consequencies? Not everyone can withstand and overcome that temptation. They tested it, found it fun and became addicted. That was why i stated in that post that the only way to make someone stop an addiction is to find him another addiction that is safe. And to do that, you need to lure or make him see reasons why the other is better than the harmful one. Am a Political Scientist by profession, trained to get something from someone or get someone do something, in a diplomatic manner(Who gets What, When and How), not by coercion or trying to prove you are superior or you know better. Am a pragmatic human being. The last thing i would do is to paint a perfect Picture of "Ikenna" to the public. They are breaking the road rules, but that doesnt mean that am better than them. They are putting their lives and others at risk, but will trying to show them that you know better than they do with insults stop them from doing so? I dont think so. We arr all insulting them because the posted those pictures. What if they didnt? And you sure they are the only group doing so in Abuja? What about the bikers? Have they stopped, even after the raid on them? See, you dont give room for a crime to perpetuate and expect everyone to keep that law? All the insults and shoutings in politics section on the way we are been governed by our politicians, what has it achieved? The more the insults, the more you wake up to hear more issues around the corridors of power? I didnot encourage anyone in that post or try to rationalize/justify their actions. Probably i could beat or overcome that temptation(even though it can be so difficult when sometimes am in the mood, pulling my RWD v6 on these smooth Abuja expressways), but they couldnt. My saviour is that i do a lot of long distance trips with the car. So i use those oppotunities to put some stunts on those wheels, to the point that sometimes, i would lower the windows, just to hear the V6 songs coming from under that hood. But the truth remains, the way out is race track. Because even if you stop these guys, another group will come up tomorrow, and maybe more deadly. So, to solve the problem, we need to address it from the root, which is provision of race track. So that there wont be room for one to break the law. Ikenna |
Siena: So many differing views on what's right, and what isn't.Siena, am too old for this. Really surprised the way you twisted my post to achieve what i dont understand. Ikenna. |
In as much as i do not support what these guys are doing on public roads, but the way some of us are going about it, hauling insults on them will not stop them. Hauling insults on a chain smoker to make him stop smoking, wont make him stop the smoking. Because its a habit, and you can only stop a habit by replacing it with another. What a smoker needs to hear from you and i that are concerned of his health is where or what else he can get those helps he feels those smoke does for him, which needs to be done diplomatically. Because trust me, that smoke does something for him, otherwise he wont be doing it. But something more safe can do that do too, which will help pulling him out of endergering his health. The same is apllicable in this matter. What do you expect when you place a MACHINE in a hands of a petrolhead? No matter how hard he tries, the temptation will always be strong. You will understand if you are one and have a such a pleasurable ride and not some plastics. @ Op, the concern of everyone here (even though the approach of some was wrong) is that even though you are good behind the wheels, not everyone you see, especially on Abuja roads, are drivers. Introduction of auto trans in Nigerian driving schools have been producing half-bake drivers in thousands. People no longer spend longer time learning proper driving, since there is Exam-Made-Easy. Those half baked drivers, when the check their rearview mirrors and see you coming on such speed, they will get scared and would try to swerve into another lane to give you way, when you have already done your calculation and knew the lane to overtake the vehicle before he knew it. Of course, you know what will happen when he swerve into the lane you wanted to overtake the car from. There are so many instances which those stunts could end in disaster for you and other road users. Also, most pedestrains cross Abuja express like Zombies. If you know how sheeps cross road, thats how most do. They just put head because everyother person has put head to cross without even checking or looking left, at least. Yes, its wrong for them to cross highway or expressway without using the proper channel or looking/checking well before making the move, but its still a human live. Who is wrong or right doesnt apply here because you have the power to prevent that loss of lives by not speeding that much. So please, consider too. The sooner race track is created in Abuja, the better. For how long would a petrolhead wait when he has a performance car and will not for once utilized the full power the car posses. Its easier to condemn, but we all have passion for something. This is theirs. No matter how you try to subdue it, it will eventually burst out. With a race track, govt can be earning some money from it, even if one will have to pay to drive on such roads. It will also be another entertainment industry, just like what Nigerian music industry has become. So Op, pull whatever resources and connections you have with your group and see if you can get a small race track in Abuja. It will be safer for everyone and more fun for petrolheads too. On the other hand, since you guys are already organised, why not organised a small Euro car day in Abuja this month? Even if its going to be strictly Euro cars with powerful engines, its a start. What do you think? Ikenna. |

ymb1: Dear All/Moderator,Thanks for sharing this with us. Really interesting. I have observed that whenever the word "Peugeot or 406" pops up outside this house, some individuals would paint them so bad as if there is nothing good about 406 or modern Peugeots. In such away that it wont even give the innocent fellow seeking the advice to make the choice by him or herself, when the mind has already been poisoned. It is that bad! The last thing I would do is to discourage anyone from buying a particular brand or product. I can only tell one all i know about the car: the good and annoyances of the particular car, if i know the car well. Its then left for the person to decide if he or she can live with those annoyances or simply go for another brand or car. There is no how one will tell me that modern Peugeots are not worth to own and dont get fixed when faulty. If i do not own or have not used a particular car, how would i, in all honesty, tell one what is like to own the car? Honestly, i really don't know what to say. I guess this house is the only place where we the Lion's owners can discuss our matters and let them be. One can always leave the brand or try another brand, if one wants to. Its no big deal. Its called "Move On". Peugeot maynot be the best brand or best cars ever produced, but i truly know they are not the worst out there. Even if they are, am very happy with mine. In fact, I love it! And I will buy another, if i have the money. Ikenna. |
samoy: Hi ikenna, pls I want to know whether my engine is using timing belt or chain. My lion is Peug406 2004 model with an EW10 engine. At what mileage am I suppose to change it? Thanks505 was the last Peugeot product that had timing chain in their engines, such as the XN1, XN1A, ZN3J,etc, which the production stopped in 1992 in Europe , while it stopped here in early '00s with the 504s. So, yours is timing belt. I do know that the factory recommended mileage for ES9J4 and ES9J4S (v6 engines in 406 D8 and D9) timing belt replacement is 120,000 km or every 6 years, whichever comes first. The EW10 and XU10 timing belt replacement is 60,000 km, i think. It should be stated in the owners manual or the workshop manual, which we now all have access to here in this thread. Ikenna. |
