As for me, I will not refuse to buy a car I like because it has interference engine, which the timing are mostly belt-driven (though we do have few timing belt engines that are non-interference engines like the chain-driven). My point is, if i would buy a 406 V6 tomorrow, and 406 V6 happens to have options of two petrol v6 engines: timing belt and timing chain. I would choose the timing chain V6 without even a blink. Last two Sundays, on my way back from Sunday Mass, my Alternator & Water pump belt broke. I had to tow the car home, since i had no spare belt in the car and it was on Sunday and no place to buy the belt. I eventually bought the belt the next day. But the quality of the new Belt (1050La) was so disappointing. It was so glaring that it was just a question of time for it to give up. I would be glad if it last up to a year. I had to buy more than two for just spares and kept in the car, incase it decides to embarrase me on the road soon. Now is this the quality of belt you want me to have rest of mind when it goes into the engine timing chamber? Meaning a new timing belt in Nigeria market may not even last upto 10,000 km, even though most car manufacturers recommend the belts in their engines to be replaced every 60-80km. The only way i can live with a timing belt driven engine is to be replacing the belt kits every 2 years because of poor qualities of belt we have here, unless if you are lucky the dealerships sell to you from their stores or you source for a quality/genuine belt outside the country. There is nothing wrong with timing belt. It just that it shouldnt be taken for granted like the timing chain. Timing chain can break or snap too. After all, its man-made, it cant last forever. But the chances are very slim, as long as the engine is well lubricated with good oil and the engine oil regularly changed when due. One thing am sure of is, timing chain gives one a piece of mind to push the engine as hard as he/she wants, as long as the chain has not starting giving the rattling noise, a sign that it has become weak. Unlike the timing belt that wont give you any sign. The engine will just suddenly die and "Hello!!" Your bank account will pay heavily for it. Ikenna. |
@ SilasO ^^^^ This is a wrong thread to post this. The best is to start a thread on it. Anyway, i dont know much about the car. But i do know that a former colleague had used a Lexus and I can tell it served him well. It was a good one. Moderator. |
ymb1: Hi Ikenna,I dont know about the others, but it was stated in my owners manual. Ikenna. |
The PRV V6 engines in my Peugeot 505 V6 and 605 V6 use timing chains. I took my time and asked all the owners of 505 V6 i met online (before i bought it) or have used 505 V6 before, about the timing chain in that engine: ZN3J; how often they have changed them. All of them told me they have never had to replace the timing chains and most of them have done more than 300,000 miles, still with the chain. Only one complained that his 604 V6 timing chain snapped once at 200k mileage. He said he belived he abused the engine a lot with the bad engine oil. Few had head gasket failures when their vicous fan of their radiators failed and they didnt noticed on time. I dont know about other brands, but the timing chains in PRV V6 in Peugeots and others last almost the life of the vehicle. A timing chain that last more than 400,000 miles, what else does one need? Another advantage of timing chain, apart from its reliability and durability it has over timing belt, is that it will give you sign for ages, before it finally snaps or breaks. You will get to know with the rattling noise. Most times, adjusting the chain tensioner or adjuster solves the rattling issue. My point is, timing chain is adjustable, incase it stretches, usually caused prematurely by bad oil (improper lubrication). But if its timing belt, make the mistake of not replacing it when its due and you kiss your engine good bye, if care is not taken. I will take timing chain over timing belt, anyday, anytime. midpoint: My car battery died few days ago and i changed it but i discovered later that the old one was 68 amps while the new is 62. will it affect the car performance in anyway? i use a 307.I won't be surprised if the factory Ah for the 307 is 45 Ah. Even my 505 V6 owners manual stated the battery Ah should be 45Ah. When i got the car, the dealer bought and put 68Ah, which was too big for the small space designed to enter 45Ah. The battery died some months back and i replaced it with 62Ah instead. My point is, the battery is only there to crank the engine or power electronics when the engine is not running. Once the engine starts running, the Alternator takes over powering the electronics that manage the engine and other car accessories. Thats why you can remove the battery while engine is still running and the engine will still be running (which is not safe for EFIs, though). Its the Alternator that even powers your A/C, not the battery. Your battery will only starts powering the engine electronics, if the charging circuit in the Alternator fails or if the Alternator belt is slippery or broken. Also, if the battery terminal heads are not well fixed, it could run down the battery. So, its safe to use the 62Ah, which may even be safer. Because you dont know what that excess Ah from the 68Ah battery will be doing to the car electronics. The car manufacturers know why they recommend lower Ah for their cars. But we the car owners choose to do otherwise. Am a victim here too. Ikenna. |
I have been going round Abuja lately, looking for a free space where we can organize and have a "Peugeot day", for those of us in Abuja, but am yet to find one. Does anyone have a place in mind? We have only December 8th or 15th to pull this off, if we want to do this. Both days are Saturdays. For those outside Abuja, even if we fail to do ours, you can still organize and do yours. Every town meetings and organisations meet at the end of every year to celebrate and close the year. I dont see why this should be difficult, if we are determined. Please, lets give it a shot. Ikenna. |
camaro: i have observed lately that you are the only one tackling problems related to Peugeot. pls how can i take care of an anti-pollution problem as well as anti-theft problem. this problem has been on for over some months on my 307 with a four cylinder engine. i dont just want to take it to any road side mechanic. i reside in abia state and i dont know any good mechanic that can solve the problem. i await ur reply. The anti-Pollution fault issue has been treated severally in Peugeot thread. Refer to the thread and learn more. https://www.nairaland.com/1003701/peugeot-thread-peugeot-community But just to be brief, Anti-Pollution fault showing on the on-board computer car electronics self diagnosis screen on your dashboard, means that your car is polluting the environment because one or more of the injection components in your car is faulty or has failed. Meaning, the car is running rich (consumes excess fuel). Oxygen sensor is usually the culprit, but not all the time. For faster diagnosis, scan the car. Better you scan the car with PP2000 (Peugeot Planet 2000). This may also be an opportunity for you to aquire the lexia 3, best scanning tool specially produced for modern Peugeots and Citroens. As for the anti-theft issue, i believe it is a BSI matter. Scanning the car with PP2000, will give you the culprit. Goodluck. Ikenna. |
My younger bro is planning on buying a renault megane scenic 2000. I understand this car is a french car. I have my fears and doubts about this mpv pls how strong and reliable is this car? Are parts readily availables here in lagos?
I dont stay in Lagos. So i donot know the availability of the vehicle parts in Lagos. But i do know the parts may likely be hard to find here in Nigeria. Am not sure i have seen Megane Scenic in Abuja. Even if they do exist here in Abuja, they are not many, for me not to have noticed. I see mostly Laguna. As for how good or reliable the megane scenic is, check this reviews below: http://www.carsurvey.org/reviews/renault/megane/ http://www.carsurvey.org/reviews/renault/scenic/ You can also find out the parts availabilty from any Renault dealership in Lagos. If you cant find proof that the parts are available, tell your brother not to buy the vehicle, unless he is ready to be sourcing the parts from France or UK. It's your brother's call. Ikenna. |

Got home like 5.30 pm… so that was five and half hours for a 250km Journey… …tdie
Almost close to what i usually spend on Abuja-Enugu highway. About 7 hrs though, in my case. I would leave by 6am and arrive Enugu at 1pm. The same on my way back to Abuja. Its about 500+ km. Ikenna. |
The two have no room for comparising, even though they are both SUVs. Let me put it this way for you. If you are a low income earner or would mind to spend much in keeping the vehicle on the road, go for the Toyota. If you feel you have what it takes to pull a MACHINE and keep it in good shape, go for the Benz. It's what i think. Ikenna. |
efetoma: Hi Ikenna, nid to 1st commend u 4 d gud work. More grease 2 ur elbow. Pls i av an issue wit my clutch....its pretty hard press compared to my bros Toyota. Do u av any idea wat cld b responsible 4 it & posible solutions 2 it. Its Honda 97(bullet)...and d clutch is Hydraulic. TnxIf your hydraulic controlled clutch system is really that hard to depress, then the culprit would be the clutch pressure plate, what Nigerians call Clutch disc. I can't think of anyother component aside this, for now. Ikenna. |
rhymz: I am not sure what this is about but it looks more like an EGO ride. You failed to understand difference between city and highway roads. Long distance journey is not about the city one takes off from. Its about the things one encounters on the highway or on the road before one gets to his final destination. Were you expecting him to start the picture taking from the room he slept in Enugu the morning he zoomed off? You would say that if the thread was about a diary; what happened in his life that day. The topic was very explicit "... Journey from Enugu to Uyo". That is, what happened between Enugu and Uyo with his Lion, on his way. The towns that came up in the pics were there because he had to pass them before he gets to Uyo. If it was a straight smooth isolated highway, would you have seen those towns you have problems with? I grew up in Awka & Enugu; i still visit Enugu often. In fact, Enugu town is always my first destination each town i travel down to East, since i drive only on Abuja-Enugu highway to East (Never taken Lokoja-Onitsha highway & ain't interested). So i know how good Enugu is. But i didnt read meaning into what you guys are insinuating. Because a petrolhead interest is not about the towns, but the car and roads in question. Is that too difficult to understand? Is natural for one to take a final picture of his ride when he/she arrives his/her final destination. I would do the same. In fact, i did the same in my own Album i created in my Facebook. I dont know why its very difficult for some people to understand the difference between Car Talk and Politics section, where almost everyone there have inferiority complex issues. Always looking for who is looking down on you or who is your Anti-tribe or state. Like i have pointed out, this is car talk section. Before you comment, first check for the section you are in. We have our own way discussion which is non tribal or non political. If you cant stand our maturity, let us be. Ikenna. |
Recently, I replaced the CTS of my ZN3J. I used that opportunity to drain the entire coolant. While refilling, i decided to do 70:30 water/coolant mixing (water: 30% & coolant 70%), unlike the drained one that was 100% coolant. The problem was that i wasnt sure if it was pre-mixed or not. Of course, I use TOTAL. But since after the 70:30 mixture, my temperature guage now takes more than 15 minutes to get upto 90 degrees celsius (middle), unlike before it would take it less than 5 mins (when it was 100% TOTAL coolant). So this morning, before i left for work, i decided to check the colour of the fluid in the cooling system. Lo and behold! The colour was pure water colour (though very little bluish). Meaning that the added water diluted the coolant I went back and read the instruction on the 1 litre TOTAL coolant bottle. And this was what i found written: -- Drain the cooling circuit & rinse well to flush out any deposits. -- Fill with TOTAL Coolant. The instruction above didn't say "Mix water with TOTAL Coolant and fill". Am not sure but it sounds like "Fill with TOTAL Coolant ONLY" to me. Or am i missing something? If am correct, that means that the TOTAL coolant is already mixed or is pre-mixed. So mixing it with water will dilute it. Well, i have made up my mind to drain the system and fill with TOTAL coolant only this weekend. Because the faster the temp gets to optimal engine temp (with the help of coolant), the lesser the fuel consumption and longevity of the engine. Ikenna. |
Ultrame: Hello Ikenna351,Sounds like a failed bearing issue. Does the steering wheel vibrates when you hear that noise? The engine drive belt roller could be a culprit here. So is other pulley bearings that the engine belt drives, such as the PAS pump bearing, Alternator bearing, A/C compressor, etc. The timing belt tensioner shouldnt be left out. Though, that would have make the belt to break. The timing belt is not as forgiving as the engine drive belt (Alternator belt). Hope your camshaft and crankshaft bearings are not giving up? If that is the case, then the Oil pump could be failing or you have once used the engine with a bad oil. But lets look on the bright side for now. I would start from the drive belt, if i were you. It will be better to pull out the belt and roll with your hand all the pulleys and rolller the belt drives. Any of them that is not free should be the culprit. My office is at Zone 1, incase you feel its still safe for you to drive the car to my office, for me to hear the noise and tell better. Lets hear from other house members that have other suggestions or idea what could be the culprit. Ikenna. |
I have one word for it - FUGLY!!!!!!! Ikenna351: Thanks for the sharing. Though sad that its only for read-only. I would have loved to print it.It just finished downloading. Wow! It contains more than i expected. A great tool for me. I can even print the manual. But for 388 pages??!! Am not running printing industry o! ![]() On a sad note, it doesent cover ES9J4 & ES9J4S: the V6 engines in 406 V6 phase I and II. Sad face! ymb1: Hi bigx,Thanks for the sharing. Though sad that its only for read-only. I would have loved to print it. Though, its still downloading on my system, but am very happy to finally have access to such book. I love it when it comes to the technicals. Will make out time to study the manual, page after page, bit by bit. Until i view it first. Will keep you guys posted. Ikenna. |
I hope this thread is indirectly not for advert? I hope not. Or would you want me to move it back to Autos section? Ikenna. |
Thanks jare... So, Guys and babes, can we improve on my effort... Am thinking of getting a dash-mounted camera for next time... this one was honestly just an impromptu thing... and my phone has a poor camera... lets have more... taken safely of course I also have pics of a road journey from Abuja to Uyo taken about 4 months ago but am not familiar with the geography and would not be able to remember the names of the places we passed through...
Am also interested in the dash-mounted Camera.I did a similar thing in my trip to East from Abuja, this past 2012 Easter break, with my Lion too. I created an Album for it in my Facebook. You will find the pics very interesting too. I would love to get the dash-mounted camera, since i will be doing another Abuja-Enugu highway drive soon. But would be nice to take the pictures with my Nokia 808 PureView with 41 Megapixel, though. Ikenna. |
Tellwisdom and Jim jones have been banned. Just a note of warning to others. Keep posting posting your hate posts as you get banned. Next time, check the section before you post those nonsense. Its not tolerated in car talk. If you dont like the topic, pass. Ikenna. |
Somatic: Good job you're doing with this page I must write. However, I have to plead that for every thread that'll make the front page, please allow it to generate a little steam from the car enthusiasts in the car talk section. That way, educative and enlightening topics (and commentators) are spared the barrage of ignorance and insults that plague most Nairaland topics. Many enlightening threads have died prematurely as a result of serious derailments. I would be grateful if I'll be so obliged. Thanks. Thanks for the suggestion. Will work on that. Moderator. |
An interesting journey with your Lion! Or would i say an adventure. As for the state of the Nigerian highways, it is that bad. Especially for those of us that do frequent long distance driving. I can see that the journey was a re-union of your Lion and it's predecessors or would i say "Forefathers". Lol! Ikenna. |
