Car TalkRe: When To Change Your Car Engine Oil: The Mileage Way! by Ikenna351(m): 9:55pm On Oct 22, 2012
sooper rescue: All vehicles whether tokunbo or new are required to service their cars at 3000 if it is in miles or 5000kms or every 3 months whenever you use the lowest grade of oil and for synthetic, 6000mls and 10000kms for every 6 months. If there is sludge in your engine, use engine flush and then maintain the service interval. if you are in Abuja, try TOTAL at zone 3, Wuse and you will get quality service.
This thing with Nigerians!

Please, where did you learn that vehicles engine oil are to be changed every 3 months? You even went further to say "all vehicles, both new and used/tokunbo". Oh! I shake my head!

I want you to refer us to one, i mean, just one vehicle owners manual that instructed that the engine oil should be changed every 3 months. Lets clear this issue once and for all.

Nigerians love this thing called "Bandwagon Propaganda" so much." Everybody does it", thats all matters to us, even to our own detriment. No one bothers to investigate to be sure if this act everybody does is safe or good, as long as its a norm. Well, it's your car anyway. I have no right to tell you how to use it or what to do with it.

big spif: Ikenna thanks for ur quick response, i went to a mechanic workshop in Gudu the next day i posted for ur assistance and had the car scanned for 5k, i was told that i need to change a censor attached to fuel distributor, which i did and iwas lucky the car is better now. Thanks but do you have an idea how much an AC compressor costs? i need to change mine. I will give u a call when i return to Abuja next week, thanks once again.
As for the AC compressor, I have no idea. But I do know that 406 tokunbo AC compressor cost more than mine. The brand new 406 AC compressor will cost fortune.

In my case, I have decided to buy new compressor, since most of the used ones here in Abuja markets are not tokunbo, but used ones removed from scrapped cars.

At Gudu market, i gathered they are selling brand new AC compressor of older Peugeots 20k, which they said are made in China. But i went to APO market last Saturday, 3 days ago, i found another brand new one, made in Japan, by the brand name "Sanden", the same brand (factory) in my car. The price is 25k. I will go for that one, when am ready.

Car TalkRe: Thermostat by Ikenna351(m):
kk. So the thermostat can be accessed by loosening those nuts right?

This is the other stuff i told you about (with two unconnected wires) that i felt was the thermostat earlier.

Mech said it has to do with the catalyst (catalytic converter) on the exhaust. He also said the catalyst has likely ''burnt out'' being an ''old car'' (possible??), and that may account for the increased fuel consumption. I'm aware of the relationship btwn fuel consumption & catalytic converter. But then,

1) i believe if a car's catalytic converter is absent, the engine sound will be rough especially on acceleration. The primera's engine is relatively smooth at idle n acceleration, so i feel its still dere. Is dere a way to actually detect its presence (as in if its still working)?

2)even if it isn't i doubt if i'll be able to get a replacement coz that stuff is one expensive vehicle part here. For the average car, based on my observations and enquiries from mechanics and users, u r looking at between N30k - 40k for a catalytic converter (popularly referred to as catalyst). How does the price compare in the UK?

*hope i'm not derailing thread.*

When the thermostat - fan connection has been put back to normal, i'll be sure to come back here with my observations.
Holy crap!

Why would someone cut off the connection to the oxygen sensor? angry These human beings called Nigerian mechanics and rewires!

85% of cars in Nigeria with overheating problems are caused by air lock, which eventually will lead to air pocket, which causes the overheating. Average Nigeria mechanic does not know that cooling system must be bled, whenever the system is opened or flushed. Air, of course will get trapped and will cause all kinds of overheating issues to the system, if not removed or bled. Instead of the mechanics to findout the cause of the overheating, they will choose the easy way out, by removing the thermostat and connecting the fans to spin constantly. Yes, it will appear as if the problem have been solved. But as soon as you get stucked in traffic jam, with heavy load like AC on, the bubbles or air in the system will deal with your engine, mercilessly.

Whatever you do, make sure you bleed the cooling system after replacing or putting back the thermostat. Otherwise, you are back to square one. Good luck.

Car TalkRe: Thermostat by Ikenna351(m):
miccodb: @ sienna, removing your thermostat doesn't make it run just above freezing point cos it aint possible in nigeria. Combustion temperatures alone will take it to abot 50 degrees before we start to talk about ambient temp. No doubt sienna ambient temp plays a lot n hence d original design of thermostat. I believe d original design of thermostats were for the actic regions where temperatures dip so low to even freeze d liquid hence thermostats would shut completely until the coolant around the cylinders reached optimum operating temperatures but wen reverse I'd the case the thermostatwould remain virtually open all d tym.
@ ikenna pls bring ur 505 to lagos leave VI by 5pm and head to egdeda or iyanapaja if ur engine doesn't overheat den we can have dis argument again. Traffic pass traffic n btw it isn't wen ‎U̶̲̥̅̊ start running ur engine dat overheat start but idling for over 3hrs with aggressive driving and soaring temp oga ur 505 will overheat on AC. I've also tested thermostats in boiling water; the technology is quite simple but that's not the optimim technology obtaiable for all regions. People tweak cars for various reasons!
Sometime last year, i travelled with my 505 v6 to East from Abuja. 3 days later, i drove off again back to Abuja. By the time i reached Gwagwalada, Hell was let loose (though was expecting it). That was when it was still single lane. I spent more than 2 hours in tdaffic jam. The traffic was barely moving. This was a car that had done about 600 km, non stop and got stucked in a traffic jam with the engine still running (didnt switch off-i dont switch off my engine till i get to my destination, i dont stop to eat, unless to refuel, thats my dont on highway). This was a car the engine was on, on top speed for close to 7 hrs. Yet it got stucked for more than two hours, the engine was never off the whole time in the hold up, yet the temp guage remained at 90 C, and of course, my windows were up. They dont come down, most especially at that time of the day in Abuja, dead hot. So, you tell me, was my case a miracle?

Last Easter break, i took off with my 605 v6 to East, to spend the holiday there, which was on 06/04/2012. I got to the the same Gwagwalada around 6:30 am. Unexpectedly, the hold up was the worst i never experienced in my live. Those in Abuja that travelled that day or last Easter break will bear witness. The traffic wasnt even moving at all. Like i said, my engine was on idling throughout the time i spent on that hold up, because i dont switch off my engine whenever i am driving long distance, unless i stop to refuel or get to my destination. Drinks and snacks are always at reach on passengers seat, taken when on the move. I passed Gwagwalada around 10 am, meaning, my car engine was running or idling for about 3 and half hours. To cut the story short, i got to Lokoja around 2pm or after. When i got to East, i learnt from phone call the next day that some people slept on the Lokoja-Abuja highway, because of that traffic Jam along that highway, meaning i was lucky because i left house early.

The point in these stories above is to tell you is not only in Lagos that we have hold ups in Nigeria, on daily basis. It just to prove to you that i have experienced terrible traffic jams, with hot weather, AC on, for hours, yet the tenperature guage remained at 90 C. The moment you break from this mindset of average Nigerians about thermostat, thats when your learning starts. Like i said earlier, i was there before. You just chose to remain there.

Car TalkRe: Thermostat by Ikenna351(m): 6:14pm On Oct 21, 2012
miccodb: @siena n ikenna, all your points hold valid for as long as the weather conditions specified for the operation is fine. Demerits of removing thermostats cannot b overemphasized and you too can't agree less that weather conditions r drastically changing. Temperate regions r getting unbearably hotter and if ‎U̶̲̥̅̊'ll agree this is being catered for more by more recent models of vehicles. Removing the thermostat from a 2010 avensis will definitely be as detrimental as ikenna and sienna explained but I can confidently tell ‎U̶̲̥̅̊ otherwise for a 92 mazda. When these older cars were made temperature specifications hadnot soared and manufacturers didn't cater for temperate regions adequately. Manufactures of cars in 199e didn't envisage maiduguri would get this hot!!! What kind of temperature regulation can a mazda 92 on full load of both transmission and aircon offer to such temperature? Combustion alone causes a lot of heating hence requirement of cooling system. My brodas I've analysed this thermostat thing for years n researched it n my conclusion is let us know the exact car n model before ‎U̶̲̥̅̊ try to remove thermostat and there must be an underlying symptom or issue that ‎U̶̲̥̅̊ feel thermostat removal will resolve. These theories we all know attimes don't pan out exactly that way in practical. Removing your thermostats just means ‎U̶̲̥̅̊ have said to your engine don't restrict the flow of cool water around my cylinder and that's if thers any cool water at all due to the climate and d cooling efficiency of the system. The theories by siena and ikenna hold perfectly for ideal cars and systems. After all we know d ideal gas equation isn't for all gases but only ideal gases n likewise siena's implications. This is my bit.
My Peugeot 505 V6 is 1987 production. I stay in Abuja, which can be damn hot during dry weather ( ask those that leave in Abuja). My temperature guage has always remain at 90 C. Still have the original thermostat, I believe. And in October last year, I converted the viscous/mechanical radiator fan to electric and connected it to be triggered on by the radiator sensor. The fan only switches on when the car is in traffic jam and the temp gauge tries to exceed 90 C and will drop and remain at 90 C again, but will drop to 85 C as soon the car starts moving again. The car has never overheated, with the thermostat and electric fan auto-start setting. Even with all the high degree C temp in Abuja. Am not forgotten to add that my windows have always been up. AC 24/7. Both in traffic jam and while in motion, no overheating with AC on, no matter how hot the weather is.

I used my car as an example because you said old car engines weren't designed to run with thermostat in hot climate regions. I have a friend in Canada that have four 505s and one 504. He said they do get 45-47 degree C in Canada, yet they all still run their old cars there with their thermostat intact. Anyone here that lives in Canada, correct me if i just told a lie.

Thermostat removal is a mindset thing in Nigeria. A theory people chose to believe in. Of course, i was once confused like everyone else, until i got my 505 v6, brought out the thermostat, tested it, put it back and realised how foolish i was to ever doubted the people that manufactured the car and put the thermostat in there for a purpose. Well, I learnt a lesson from my foolishness: " DON'T BELIEVE EVERTHING YOU READ!"

Car TalkRe: Thermostat by Ikenna351(m): 6:12pm On Oct 18, 2012
ken4jj: @ Siena and Ikenna,

For those of us who have had thier thermostat removed and some construction already done, what should we do? The only time i get my temp guage at half or close to half is only if i drive with AC on a sunny weather. Without AC it neva gets there.
Every moment the vehicle run without the cooling system thermostat, the more the engine wears rapidly. Its just a question of time before the engine goes BAANG!

Aside losing the engine, your car must be running very thirsty. You maynot know, but its happening. You are simply wasting so much money every moment the engine runs. If your car is suppose to cover 900 km with the thermostat at work, then know you that without the thermostat, you cant go beyond 300 km with the same full tank.

I would be worried if my car temperature guage doesn't get to the middle or 90 C, after 10 minutes of idling. I would want it to get up there before the first 3 minutes of starting the car. The faster it gets up there, the safer for the engine and better for your wallet, in terms of fuelling.

If your radiator fans still spin as factory, then you will have no business replacing the fans till thy kingdom come. But if you bypass the factory connection and coneect them to spin constantly once the engine is running, then get ready to be replacing them, every now and then. The radiator fan motors are not designed to spin constantly, just like the Blender motors in our kitchens and our car starter motors.

There is no other option for you to remedy this than to reverse the fans connections to factory and put back a working thermostat.

I have seen so many Nigerians replacing their sudden dead engines, over and over again. Just because of this singular abuse. As long as the cooling system remains in this setting, it will keep killing the engines.

And please, make sure you put in some coolant too in the cooling system. It will make the temperature to rise faster to the optimal engine temperature, lubricates your water pump, prevent the water pump blades from rusting and prevent your engine from corroding. Water alone in the system affects the engine adversely too. At least, mix the coolant with water 50:50. And most importantly, BLEED the system after flushing and refilling it. Otherwise, the system will have airpocket and thus, the engine will overheat.

big spif: Hello to the house and kudos to Ikenna, you keep our hopes high on having confidence on Peugeout brand. Pls can you suggest where i can scan my 406 in abuja, do you know any reliable mechanic? im having issues with my 406 to the extent of thinking of abandoning it for another brand. Ive been to several mechanics but they dont seem to know the problem and keep telling me to change this change that. I will appreciate if we can meet cos im in abuja. Mine is an imported 406 phase II from UK. Thanks and keep up the good work.
The only place i can suggest you scan your 406 BSI controlled is in any of the Peugeot dealerships scattered in Abuja city. ASD motors at Area 7, Okocha motors at Garki II, etc. But of course, they will cost fortune. The best tool to scan phase II 406 or any Peugeot with BSI system is Peugeot Planet 2000 (pp2000).

I would have asked you to bring your car for me to scan for you ad possibly fix the issues with the car for you. Unfortunately, my recently purchased scanner doesn't work. And a case like yours was why i even purchased the scanner, since my Lion is not OBD II compliant. I didn't buy to use in my car, but for others.

Am not yet conversant with BSI system, like i know the older Peugeot EFI systems which i can troubleshoot and fix without touching any damn scanner. Which is why am working on getting a 406 V6 (D9), to tear the car electrics apart and study that system, like i have done with my 505 V6.

But we can still meet, in case you still need me to check the car and offer some suggestions with the little i know. Call or send me SMS. I will tell you how we can meet. My contact is on my signature or profile.

What are the issues with the car anyway? It could be general issues that are not peculiar to BSI.

bigx: My 307 ignition (abi kickstarter) fuse keeps getting burnt, when I turn the key to ignition position then try to start, it doesn't respond at all, yesterday I changed it thrice, I'm scared of going to mechanics for electrical issues before they butcher my car, anyone knows what the issue might be? The last time a fuse was burning incessantly it was one of the wires to the fuel pump that had eroded so it was touching the car chassis and making the fuel pump fuse burn.
The name is starter, not kickstarter.

You guessed right. A wire connected to that fuse is touching ground somewhere. Thats why the fuse keeps blowing up.

You will need test light or Digital Multimeter to trace and find the wire that is causing the problem. Once you know the wire that is the culprit, finding the spot where its touching the ground wont be a problem. Worst case, you bypass and run another fresh wire, from the fuse to the component it feeds or supplies volts. Its an easy fix.

All you need is test light or DMM to get the job done.

I saw it coming though, when they flushed the system with an unknown harsh gas, which first damaged the compressor seal. Finally, the entire compressor is dead.

505 brand new compressor is 20k, while tokunbo is 10k. Unfortunately, they don't rebuild ac compressor in Abuja, unlike Enugu and Onitsha, where they are been rebuilt and work like new after the rebuilt. Am missing East.

For those of us in Abuja, we need to think of a wide space in town that can take many cars.

A friend has suggested the beach between Jabi and Gwarimpa. What do you think? Is it wide enough? Do you have a better place in mind in the city that will be free?

We need a free space, because no cash will be involved. Unless someone wants to volunteer to pay for a space for the event. But its better if we can get a free one.

Please we need to join hands and make this event a reality. We need everyone contributions (not financial contributions).

Once you remove the BSI unit in that car and put another, the mileage will change and can't be returned to the original mileage, i garthered. So, it's upto to you to choose between loosing the mileage and unfunctional central lock system.

Car TalkRe: Peugeot: Cars With Attitude! by Ikenna351(op):
Aqva: Ikenna, hope u had a swell day?
My 206 has central lock problem. The BSI seems to be the issue. I fixed a new BSI and d central lock started working but the car won't start because of the immobilizer and it has to be recoded to work with my car's ECU. Did some online research and found out that a BSI cannot be recoded. The only option is to buy a new BSI and ECU from the same car and transfer to my car before it will work. How true is this? Isn't there some guru that can actually program the new BSI to work with my car?

Another unfortunate thing is that the new BSI i put in my car briefly changed my mileage from 44,000 to 145,000. I read that fixing a new BSI changes the reading of the mileage. Imagine my car that is pretty low on mileage now taking on the mileage of an older car. Can i get someone to reprogram the mileage? The new BSi wasn't even used because d car won't start, it was just fixed to test if the central lock would work.

Honestly, this newer model of cars have too much wahala. My central lock controls my boot and d boot has no external opener, therefore my boot no longer opens and i have no access to my spare tire. I really feel like selling the car.
I met someone yesterday that his 406 once had a BSI issue. According to him, he bought another BSI unit, took the car to ASD motors at Area 7 (Peugeot dealership) and they re-coded/reprogrammed the BSI unit to link and work with the engine ECU and key fob. The car has been starting and every other thing working well since then. But of course, it changed the mileage.

So, BSI unit can be recoded in Nigeria. You need to find closest Peugeot dealership to you to get the job done. Hope that helps?

In as much as i would say congratulations for having your car running again, but am very disappointed with your lack of interest in what it takes to own a car.

Someone brought a part, as big as that (from the picture) and replace it and the car started running again, but you didn't bother to ask him what the part name was. You were only desperate in getting your car to start running again, but not interested in what really went wrong or what caused the issue.

Anyway, for the sake of others, from the picture of the part he claimed was replaced and got the car running again, the part is called Distributor. Its probably the Rotor,Distributor Cap or something else in the distributor that failed and wasn't passing or sending high volts to the spark plugs.

Paying little attention or putting interest in our cars, is what will make them last longer.

Yes,Clutch Throw-out bearing would make such sound when it fails. And if you keep using it in that condition, it will kill Clutch Pressure Plate. I believe water entered bellhousing and damaged the throw-out bearing. See what cleaning engine with high pressured water has cost you.

You don't have to undergo any training to use OBD II scanner. It comes with user manual. Or you google it.

If its 4, that means the sensor has heater. And to have the heater, it will need 12+ from relay to power the heater. You will need to find out if you are getting 12+ on any of the wires to the sensor.

You will also need to find out which of the wires is from ECU to the sensor (signal wire). o2 sensor signal wire should have about 0.65 volts, when tested, without connecting it to the sensor. if it doesn't have its own volts values, then the ECU is not signaling to the o2 sensor or it could be the wire has broken and not connected to the ECU anymore.

You can as well test the oxygen sensor to know if it still produces factory volts values, to really determine if actually the sensor has failed or not.

All these test above will have to be done with DMM (Digital MultiMeter), the one with milivolts feature, that cost more than the others. Maybe 2k or so.

Do you think you can carry out the test by yourself, if i guide you?

But i still need to know how many wires the o2 sensor in your car have.

miko11: pls Ikenna explain more about cable controld clutch system and hydraulict controld clutch system. I so much dislike d experience of having to exert energy before applying clutch. hw does it relate to car make. pls enlighten
Hydraulic controlled Clutch system is softer to depress. The clutch pedal takes very little pressure to go down.

Cable controlled Clutch system is not as soft as the other to depress. But it has been improved on some newer cars with the cable clutch system. Softer than it used to. But, the hydraulic still does better than the cable, in terms of softness.

Hemanwel: Hi OP.Nice thread!Am a callow driver.My question is:
How do u knw dat dis car ur abt 2 drive is nt in gear or is in gear 1 without u askin?
Once again,nice thread!
You are asking me to teach you how to drive here? it doesn't work that way.

A skilled driver doesn't need to look at gear lever to know which gear is on. Driving manual transmission takes a lot of brain activities. Thats why is meant for adults that have the capabilities to imbibe such skills. Insane adults are not licenced to drive. Like I said, so much brain activity is needed in driving. When i said driving, I mean manual transmission.
