CareerRe: Marine Engineering Aspirants And Practitioners: Any Future? by iKoksi(m): 5:51pm On Mar 12, 2012
aladejana1: Marine Engineering as a career go beyound sailing onboard vessel, sailing is just a minor contribution. Honestly, Marine is a wide wide course with diversed set of applications. For example in Mechanical Engineering field my grandfather thinks all what it entailes is autombile where there is a lot of option too in that said carreer.
So having a degree will give you and exception from MCA during your OOW where mates with Diplomas have to sit for both Oral and written exams to acquired their OOW, a degree holder will be exempted and equally went for just Oral exams bam!
With yr degree in marine engineering you can be a technical superintendent manager in marine operation dept of most oil services coys and oil companies, because I have some of my friends now in that post in different oil companies because u just have to be ashore sending spare parts and crew for their oil tankers and Gas carriers honestly most oil company employed marine engineers with degree just like normal engineering field. If you really looking for money in that field go for degree first + OOW certificate then you can hurt for job in these fields
1. oil coys marine operation dept
2. Liquidified natural gas coys e.g target Angola, middle east, canada, Qartar and Nigeria
3.oil rigs and FPSO platform
4.sea ports, Ministry of transport or NIMASA, Naval officer, offshore renewable energy coys etc. Honestly, marine engineering course is a hot cake but poorly established in Nigeria. I'm living witness good luck to u.
Nice one Sir,
For Class 1 & 2 CoC upgrade with MCA you'll still need to do written exams on Engineering Knowledge (General, Naval Architecture & Electrics), then specific; Motor or Steam or Combined.

like you said, MSc, BSc/HND are all just 'added' mostly for shore-side jobs.

Example: Minimum Requirement for a Technical Superintendent is a Class 1 CoC (Chief Engineer)...
Minimum Requirement for an Assistant Technical Superintendent is a Class 2 CoC (1st or 2nd Engineer)...
This is true for at least 85% of companies employing.

As a Chief Engineer without a degree you'll get an unbelievable job plus 5 times the salary of a bank Manager with PhD! grin

So i'll say for intending marine engineers, get required seatime, go for CoC first (Oron, Ghana, Egypt, Singapore, UK....pending on ur pocket), while getting the sea experience which is vital, do BSc, Master as part time, fix exams during ur leave, dont waste time!

but please note i understand NIMASA (with Oron) only offers Limited CoC for now, i'm not very sure of this, i did mine everything in d uk.

Sorry but its a matter of choice. If its your choice to live in a country where Civility is a foreign concept, progression is alien and corruption is norm, then that's your prerogative. To each his own! It doesn't make you any more patriotic than a Nigerian in Iceland in search of a better life!
Ok Sir, thanks.

PoliticsRe: FCT Minister Mohamed Renames Abuja’s Maitama As Goodluck Jonathan District by iKoksi(m): 7:38pm On Mar 09, 2012
kokoA:
Its not even about GEJ. Does the minister know the the reasons why districts have not been named after individuals in Abuja? huh

The initiators of the Abuja Master Plan felt that it is very important to retain the original names of these areas because they were once peoples' villages and it will be most unfair to the former occupants of these areas (The original villagers and owners) to have their ancestoral Names being wiped out of existence sad . That is why districts like Wuse, Garki, Wuye and all other districts in Abj have retained their original names. Now this M0r0n wants to change that. angry

Why must we play politics with every thing. huh This minister is a sick person honestly. embarassed
you are too correct my broda.
why not at least repair traffic lights and name it for himself?
would even expect him to decentralise public offices, expand d town. he's there renaming peoples villages. no fucus minister.

mekaboy:
I AM HAPPY WITH THE GOOD NEWS FROM GHANA AND DEVELOPMENT, BUT IT WILL  BE WRONG FOR NIGERIANS TO START COMPARING GHANA TO NIGERIA.

IT IS EASIER FOR GHANA TO HANDLE THEIR ISSUES BECAUSE OF THEIR SIZE.

MY POINTS.

ELECTRICITY :- IF NIGERIA WAS THE SAME SIZE WITH GHANA, WITH THE ELECTRICITY WE GENERATE, I DON'T THINK OUR LIGHT WILL EVER BLINK , THE ELECTRICITY THAT THE WHOLE OF LAGOS CONSUMES IN A DAY, I DONT THINK THE WHOLE GHANA WILL CONSUME IT IN A MONTH.

SECURITY :- WHAT IS THE POPULATION OF GHANA? ABOUT 20MILLION PEOPLE, ASSUMING 10% OF THE POPULATION WERE  SECURITY AGENCIES THERE WILL BE 2MILLION SECURITY PERSONS. NIGERIA IS OVER 150MILLION PEOPLE, IF WE HAVE 10% IN SECURITY AGENCIES THAT WILL BE 15M , WHICH MEANS OUR SECURITY PERSONS ARE MORE THAN HALF GHANA POPULATION AS A COUNTRY.

WHEN THEY MEASURE GHANA'S PROGRESS, THEY ARE SIMPLY SAYING THAT "GHANA IS DOING WELL AT THEIR SIZE" .

WHEN NIGERIA IS MEASURED IT IS MEASURED AT ITS SIZE , AND MORE IS EXPECTED FROM NIGERIA BASED ON OUR POPULATION .

DESPITE THE INSECURITY LEVEL IN NIGERIA, ANY FOREIGN INVESTOR THAT WANTS TO MAKE PROFIT WILL CONSIDER NIGERIA FIRST WHY ?

SELLING A PRODUCT FOR 100 NAIRA TO 20MILLION PEOPLE AND SELLING FOR 50NAIRA TO 150MILLION PEOPLE, WHICH IS MORE PROFITABLE?

GHANA IS DOING WELL AT THEIR SIZE, CONSIDER THEIR POPULATION WHEN COMPARING .

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO JUMP TO SAY "GHANA HAS STEADY ELECTRICITY AND NIGERIA DOES NOT" HAVE YOU CONSIDERED THE SIZE OF BOTH COUNTRIES ? EVEN WITH THE 20MILLION POPULATION OF GHANA , THEY STILL EXPERIENCE POWER FAILURE . HOW MUCH MORE NIGERIA?

IF PHCN DECIDES THAT ALL THE ELECTRICITY GENERATED IN THIS COUNTRY WILL BE CHANNELED TO ONE STATE IN NIGERIA , DO YOU THINK THE LIGHT WILL EVER GO OFF FOR A DAY?

SO LOOK AT IT FROM THIS VEIW.

IF GHANA IS 10% CORRUPT THEN NIGERIA WILL BE MORE THAN 10 TIMES CORRUPT.

IF THERE ARE 20MILL CARS IN GHANA, THEN THERE WILL BE 150MIL CARS IN NIGERIA.

IF 10PEOPLE ARE UN EMPLOYED IN GHANA, THERE WILL BE 100 UNEMPLOYED PEOPLE IN NIGERIA.

IF THERE ARE 10 ACCIDENTS IN GHANA A YEAR, THERE WILL BE 100 ACCIDENTS IN NIGERIA A YEAR.

IF THERE ARE 10 COMPANIES IN GHANA THERE WILL BE 100 COMPANIES IN NIGERIA.

SO AS YOU COMPARE THE GOOD COMPARE THE BAD.

NO NEED FOR COMPARING BOTH COUNTRIES, ITS BASELESS . GHANA IS DOING WELL IN THEIR SIZE, NIGERIA IS DOING WELL FOR ITS SIZE BUT COULD DO MORE IF NOT FOR CORRUPTION .
well said.

Think Scotland, things seems to be abit easier for Int students as compared to England now

anishe:
There is a lot of misinformation going on in Nairaland. I am presently studying in the UK and i have no reason whatsoever to regret my coming to the UK for studies.

Call to Nigeria Landlines is at the rate of 1P per minute. In fact, i had to ask my wife to get a Starcomm Line that starts with 01- for me to always communicate with her. I call my wife more than 10 ttimes a day because it is cheaper. Mind you, if u get starcomm that starts with 070 or any 080 or 081 number, the rate is 8p per minutes. Moreso, the service providers have been so generous. If you recharge £20 online, a bonus of £10 is to be added to your phone instantly.

Hello Siena/All,
Happy New Year to You.
Apologies for late update on my car situation.

On receipt of parts, the following were carried out:
1. Belt renewed - my neighbours are now able to sleep in the morning when I start the car

2. Mass Air Flow Meter renewed DIY -
   * Fuel consumption dropped significantly
   * Steady steaming at idle (no more irregular revving)
   * Code clears for Random Misfire (no need to renew coils)

3. Transmission Range Sensor Renewed (Although managed to break Transmission Mount bracket in the process):
   All them transmission sickness healed!
   * No More limp mode at any shift position
   * smooth change up/down gears

The car is in a fairly stable condition now. in the past 3weeks it has done Abuja-Jos-Abuja, Abuja-Calabar-Uyo-Abuja with no issues (only damaged my shocks on bad roads)

Very many thanks Siena/All. Will sort A/C out once i'v got the funds.
Thanks and regards.

And come Monday, all the items will be sent to Ikoksi by DHL Express. I'll keep updates coming, and obviously for security reasons, will update Ikoksi tracking details via email.

All parts ready to ship via DHL Express:

Hello Siena can confirm receipt of shipment and contents intact, just regret excluding the Bently Repair Manual. I do not have the reqd tools to F125 replacement as such i'll have to work with a mechanic later today.

*what my car does now (past 2 days) is that the PRNDS illumination only and ALWAYS comes on once i shift to 'R', with a large jerk. It doesn't come on 'D'. I don't understand this.

Very many thanks Mr Siena for all your efforts.
God Bless

Siena:
a) Transmission range switch - 35,000 NGN.
b) Mass air flow meter - 47,000 NGN.
c) Coil pack - 9,900 NGN.
Hello Siena,
Price quotes in Naira? Can u supply witting Nija?
My transmission has gone to a very bad state, now it goes 'limp' (PRNDS Illuminates) with a large jerk each time I move to 'R' and gear shift is comparatively harder to move.
Should I renew all 6 coils at once?
I cudnt download the service manual from the link you sent - asked for a PayPal a/c.
Please check as I have replied you mail.
Many thanks once again and God Bless.

Siena:
Diagram 1) Transmission range switch (F125) #3. Fitted to transmission casing, driver's side, above the catalytic converter. Plug must be oil-free.
Diagram 2) Evaporative Control System (EVAP) # 5,7 and 8. All pipes and joints must be air tight.
Diagram 3) Coil pack (COP) #1.
Diagram 4) Mass Air-Flow Meter (MAF) #6. Replacement must be genuine Audi or BOSCH.
Very many thanks Mr Siena, plz let's arrange for the parts I'll need as i'm not sure of getting genuine parts in Abuja. Been to Audi Place and was asked to register the car with N250,000 (~£1000) before they can even answer my greetings.

I believe If I have the parts, drawings (or service/maintenance) manual I'll sort things out myself, I'm a marine engineer.
Will be awaiting you response on mail.
Thanks and God bless.

"Please scan the following:
a) Engine.
b) Transmission.
c) Climate control.
Post whatever codes you come up with, and I'll talk you through the processes you'll need to take for rectification."

Hello Siena,
Following you recommendations, have had the car scanned with Auto Scanner Plus CP9180, results as follows:
P0455 - Evap System Large Leak
P0102 - MAF or VAF A Ckt low input
P0706 - Transmission Range Sensor ckt Rng perform

P0300 - Random Misfire cylinder misfire Detected
P0442 - Evap syste small leak
P0305 - Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected

Oil: as per the owner's manual, recommended Engine oil are SAE 0W-30, SAEv5W-30 or SAE 5W-40, the closest i can get here is 0W-40 (Mobile 1), will that be a problem? also please wat's the recommended Transmission Oil? (can't find in manual)

Its a pity i'm yet to find an autoshop that'll solve this puzzle in Abuja. meanwhile please can we arrange to get me a diagnostic scanner. please contact with imenkweini@gmail.com.
Many thanks Sir
Car TalkRe: The Audi And Volkswagen Issues Resolution Thread by iKoksi(m): 3:25pm On Nov 25, 2011
Siena, many thanks for your prompt reply.
A/C: have had the system rechecked, removed parts of the piping to find debris inside, av attached a photo from a filter on the HP side pipe. i presume this will indicate a complete Compressor damage. the Refrigerant they use here is R134a. Have ordered for a 2nd hand Comp/Condenser from Lagos, shd arrive here Monday, will fix it and see wat'll happen.

25) PRNDS all illuminate intermittently whilst in "grin". Yes you are very correct, i do stop and restart the car and it clears. But i see now i'v got more problems in my hands than i expected. i do not have the scanner, wil go get the car scanned and give you feedback.

14/06) Check engine light illuminated: yes i really believe there's misfire. on idle, 'N' or in 'P' mode, the engine will rev up/down on it own.

This thread is now first step to get my machine sorted out, God bless Sir.
1) A4 Quattro
2) 3.0L V6
3) Trans: Auto
4) 2004
5) US
6) Drive Config: P. AWD

Issues:
50) A/C blows hot air: on driving the car from Lagos to Abuja, I noticed d a/c will blow abit cold while stand still or driving slowly, but at high speed only hot air from vents. @ d moment no longer cold at all. Had d refrigerant flushed and recharged but didn't help. Also bits missing on d A/C unit display.

14) Check Engine illuminated (and almost all other warning signs!)

25) Occationally while on 'D' the PRNDS all illuminates at the same time

06) The car will start and run normally but Occationally jerks in motion, fuel consumption seems high.

The car is a week old, millage @ 20,000. I'll do everything to it back to best performance 'cos I love d machine.
How much will a compatible diagnostic equipment cost, do you have a link to download maintenance manual please?
Many thanks in Anticipation Sir.
Koksi.

My Good people of NL, please anyone has an idea where i can get a reliable Mechanic/Autoshop for Audi in Abuja. I'v just purchased a Nija used 2004 Audi A4 Quattro, V6. Body, Interior & Main Engine still Ok but needs to  fix a couple of auxiliaries to get the machine back to optimum performance. I have tried Audi place but was asked to register the car with N250k!
*A/C's stopped working (was told i need a new compressor & Condenser)
*Both fans will start once engine's on even when cold (guess thermostat has been disconnected)
*Alot of loose wires/connections here and there.
*Almost all the warning indications are on!
But in all I love the car and will like to get it fully functional so please help.
God Bless y'll.
