Few days ago, a video of a South African lady being attacked by some women for sleeping with a married taxi driver in Pharare village of Limpopo went viral on social media.

The 20-year-old grade 11 student who was assaulted outside the school yard by three women for allegedly “wrecking a marriage”, has been identified as Dolly Maila.

Speaking to Sowetan, the student who suffered bruises on her upper body and thighs said the incident occurred on Thursday October 17. Maila said she was attacked by three women who pulled her braids and also struck her with fists and a stick.

The student distanced herself from the “home-wrecker” tag she was given on social media, while revealing she was on her way to the tuckshop just outside the school when she was approached by the three women who demanded to talk to her.

“It’s not true that I’m a home-wrecker, I ended the relationship with the woman’s husband after I discovered he was married.

The relationship ended late last month after I received threatening SMSes from an unknown lady who told me to stop seeing the taxi driver because he is married or they will deal with me.

“Before they could state their concerns, all of them started attacking me, saying I should stay away from their friend’s husband,” she said.

Even with the viral video, Maila said she was told by the police that there was not enough evidence to prosecute the women that assaulted and left her with pains on her neck, back and thighs.

“I’m not happy with the police because I went to open a case the same day and one of the female police officers told me that if I was dating her husband, she would have killed me. She said I deserve to be killed because I’m breaking people’s marriages” she added.

In the viral video, wife of the taxi driver was seen hitting Maila in the face while saying “Do you know I’m a married woman and you are breaking my marriage. I have been meaning to talk to you but you refused.”

Another woman was heard shouting “beat her my friend”. The taxi driver’s wife continued hitting the student saying: “You were born in 2001 and there is no way you can date a 40-year-old man. You are mad, I can’t leave my marriage because of you.”

Maila was also whipped on the back with a stick by a woman that wore a red dress in the viral video.

About five kilometers outside Sokoto, behind Giginya Army Barracks lies a community known as Sharp corner. Being so close to a military barrack is a plus security wise, given the general state of insecurity in the land and that probably is the reason it attracts many visitors.

A first time visitor to Sharp Corner, especially during the day, will definitely mistake it for a community of imams, priests and members of their congregations, due to the number of churches and mosques located in the environment.

If anyone was looking for a place to frolic with women and indulge himself in drinking and carousing, the physical environment of Sharp Corner was enough to discourage such a person.
One can also describe the environment as a mini holiday resort due to the presence of many hotels of different categories. Given this situation, accommodation in the hotels is easily affordable to every category of lodgers, be they middle or lower class patrons.

Arewa Live’s visit to Sharp Corner is a study in sharp contrast. At the entrance to the community, by the road side, were different signposts identifying the churches situated there, some of which are branches of major churches known in the country.

From Redeemed Christian Church Of God to Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Christ Evangelical Church, Winners Chapel, Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Celestial Church of Christ and numerous other churches, the signposts detailed when their services and programmes hold.

A resident of Sharp Corner who identified himself as Raphael spoke with Arewa Live and confirmed that the churches actually have their programmes without coming in the way of the other.

According to Raphael: “Why are you surprised with the number of churches you see here? All these churches not only hold their services on Sundays, but also on weekdays. They normally have their fellowships, choir practices, vigils and many others you can think of without getting into one another’s ways.”

However, when Arewa Live visited again around 9.00 p.m, same day, it was a different situation altogether as what was seen was totally different from what took place during daytime.

The atmosphere was boisterous, a complete beehive with loud music emanating from huge speakers mounted by owners of different shops and drinking joints that line the streets. Revelers were perpetually on the move from one end of the area to the other.

There were also ladies of different sizes and shapes calling on potential customers who had come to catch fun.

One of the ladies gave her name as Maryam from Niger State. Initially she was reluctant to talk except it was going to be about business. She later changed her mind, disclosing that she was in the trade to keep body and soul together.

“I joined this trade about five years ago when I lost my parents and no one to care for me. I spoke to one of my friends to help me get a job and she asked me to follow her somewhere in the evening. When I got here for the first time, I felt uncomfortable as I saw girls moving up and down with men. I went back home that day empty.

“After some days with no solution in sight to my predicament, I had no choice than to accept my fate by joining the other girls to hustle,” she stated.

Maryam, however, confirmed that she had no regret going into the profession ever since. Instead, she said, “I thank God, since I got into this profession, I have never regretted my decision. I have been able to pay my dues and attend to my growing responsibilities.

“I am sure you will be surprised with my statement but that is the truth, though it is bitter. I was around 19 years old when I lost my parents and I had no means of survival.

“After several attempts to find a way to survive with ordinary school certificate, nobody was ready to assist me. The few people who offered to help were actually demanding for my body in returns.

“After lots of pressure, I gave in to one Alhaji who promised to get me an ‘indigene letter’ and facilitate my enrollment into one ministry where I can also continue my education. To my surprise, after sleeping with me for up to three times, he stopped picking my calls and never called me back since then.

“That is exactly why I sat down and realised that I had to be responsible for my future and take on the challenges of life as they relate to me. After all someone just slept with me without giving me a penny and never fulfilled his promise.

“What will then happen if I make use of it for my benefit to cater for my needs. That was how I started this job. I can tell you now that in the next three months, I would have finished putting finishing touches to my business and thereafter quit this job to settle down.

“It will also interest you to know that I have enough suitors ready to take me as wife even when they know I’m into this job. Those who patronise us know we are far better than some of the girls in the town who claimed to be students.
“Any girl you see here is as clean as you can think of. No matter how much you intend to pay us, none of us will ever allow you to have sex (with us) without protection,” she boasted.

Also speaking with Arewa Live, Gift from Anambra State said she came to the state in 2017 after she heard of how lucrative the job is.
“It was a friend who asked me to come to Sokoto sometimes in 2017. I was in Kebbi by then but when I kept complaining to my friend that business was dull, she then advised me to come to Sokoto and experience the market here. My brother, I thank God for coming here o.

“Though the price we charge varies, on a good day we can charge a client or customer N1000 per shot. For some who are regulars here, we can collect N500 from them and one can easily get at least 10 or more customers in a day. For security reasons, we don›t follow any unknown customers home.

“It is also allowed for a client to sleep here with us but that is a different negotiation as well, but the least is N3000,” she explained.

Aren’t the girls always under the watchful eyes of security agencies? Gift said no and that “there is a good relationship with the law-enforcement agencies in which everyone respects their positions.”

One good thing about Sharp Corner is that it is peaceful and secure. Raphael, the resident, also confirmed this.

“Since I came to this area, I have always had rest of mind when it comes to security. I can tell you that for the last six years I have been in this area, I can›t ever remember anytime I witnessed any security breach. No single robbery case or any form of unrest has taken place.

“Also, maybe because this environment is highly inhabited by every tribe – Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa and non-Nigerians – we all live like one family or relatives.

“Apart from this, most of these girls are not residents of this area but only come around in the night to ply their trade. This is why you hardly see such activities in the day time. This area is so cool and quiet during the day that a first-time visitor would easily fall in love with it,” he said.

Some students at the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) have disclosed to Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that they have been allegedly harassed sexually by lecturers.

Speaking on the reason of anonymity, the students said some of the lecturers’ proposed love to them.

A student revealed a lecturer told her he wanted a relationship.

“I have experienced it before. Even though the lecturer told me he liked me, he didn’t say he wanted to sleep with me, but he wanted a relationship.

But I believe that if you want a relationship with a lecturer-even if he is not married, it should be after school,” a female student said.

Another student who also spoke to our team said she had not experienced it before, but her friend has been a victim.

She disclosed the lecturer had wanted to fail her friend for refusing him sex.

“Some lecturers fail female students because they refused to comply with their request.
This particular lecturer I am referring to will sometimes ask you to come to satisfy him if you complain about your grade,” she alleged.

“Some lecturers who demand sex for grades is occurring at GIJ. It is a reality. We have students who trade sex for grades, whereas we have lecturers who demand it.

“I am not mincing words. We have lecturers who threaten to fail female students should they refuse them sex. It is occurring here at GIJ. Let no one threat this as a joke. It is a reality that must be addressed,” she concluded.

Meanwhile, some other students felt the issue is being exaggerated despite the reality in our tertiary institutions.

“Yes it is happening in our schools, but they are exaggerating it. The reason why I am saying this is because,” the expose did not show what they advertised.

Reacting to Prof. Gyampo’s case, the student said the expose failed to establish wrongdoing because the lady was not a student at the school.

She was wondering how the lecturer could have favoured the lady even after he had slept with her.

BBC Pidgin in a collaboration with BBC Africa Eye has tasked itself to investigate how students face sexual harassment by lecturers for some of the universities in West Africa.

The investigation was secret and thorough as secret filming was involved in other to get video evidence of how some of the lecturers sexually abuse their students, mostly female students.

About ‘Sex for grades’

‘Sex for grades’ is a BBC Africa Eye undercover investigation into some academic institutions in West Africa which increasingly have been faced with allegations of sexual harassment by lecturers. This type of abuse is said to be endemic, but it’s almost never proven.

After gathering dozens of testimonies, BBC Africa Eye sent undercover journalists posing as students inside the University of Lagos and the University of Ghana.

Female reporters were sexually harassed, propositioned and put under pressure by senior lecturers at the institutions – all the while wearing secret cameras.

Undercover reporter Kiki Mordi, who knows first-hand how devastating sexual harassment can be, reveals what happens behind closed doors at some of the region’s most prestigious universities.

A picture of a small parrot “locked up” in a Dutch police cell is giving new meaning to jailbird — and on Monday attracted a flurry of chirpy comments on social media.

When police arrested the bird’s owner on suspicion of shoplifting in the central Dutch city of Utrecht on Thursday, they found the little bird nestled on the suspect’s shoulder.

“During the arrest we found a secret witness with feathers and a beak on the suspect’s shoulder,” police said.

“We then realised to our shock that we did not have a bird cell or cage,” the police said tongue-in-cheek, adding that the little creature was “well cared for.”

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday at a dinner organised in commemoration of Nigeria’s 59th Independence Anniversary at the State House Banquet Hall, Abuja, thrilled the guests with visual descriptions of attributes that make Nigerians outstanding.

Osinbajo, who spoke on a lighter note, said that one of the distinct attributes of the Nigerian person was the `Nigerian Swag.’

He described `Nigerian swag’ as that uniquely confident way that made Nigerians to stand out everywhere and in everything they did.

Osinbajo, who got the guests laughing and clapping intermittently, cited the sport called Bobsled and presented a power point video of Nigerians girls dancing at the Winter Olympics.
“They thought only white people could do this because it is a winter sport; if you don’t have winter and snow in your country you can’t be a bobsled champion.

“Well, so they thought until the Nigerians came to the Winter Olympics in Pyeong Chang South Korea, three Nigerian girls.

China marks 70 years of communist party rule on Tuesday with a major military parade in Beijing and celebrations nationwide, but protests in Hong Kong are likely to cast a long shadow on the festivities.

Chinese authorities have left nothing to chance in their meticulous planning for the biggest national anniversary since president Xi Jinping came to power.

The capital has been put on lockdown, with bans on everything from kites and homing pigeons to drone s. People who live along the parade route have lived with curfews all week, and were asked to leave their homes ahead of national day.

The military are expected to use the day to unveil several powerful new weapons including a hypersonic drone and an intercontinental ballistic missile that can reach the United States, in a parade that will include 15,000 soldiers, chosen for their near-uniform height.

Xi will watch the parade from a gate on Tiananmen square, where his predecessor Mao Zedong stood to announce the establishment of the People’s Republic of China on 1 October 1, 1949.

Then China was so poor and battered by civil war that some of its 17 war planes were reportedly ordered to fly by twice, to make the airforce seem larger than it was. Today it is a major world power, and the carefully-choreographed celebrations are expected to show off its economic and military might.

Xi who has spent years consolidating his grip on power and now holds more authority than perhaps any Chinese leader since Mao himself, will also address the nation. His speech is likely to underline the party’s role restoring China to international super-power status.

For the party, this is one of the most consequential celebrations of its national day. The communist state has now outlived the Soviet Union that was once its sponsor and supporter; Chinese officials for years have studied the collapse of the USSR in a bid to avoid a similar fate for the PRC.

But it also comes as Beijing faces the most serious challenges since the 40 national day in 1989, which was marked in muted fashion just months after the military killed thousands of pro-democracy protesters in and around Tiananmen square, plunging the country into international isolation.

A trade war with the US threatens both the American and Chinese economies, there is growing international unease at Xi’s aggressive projection of power beyond China’s borders, and domestic problems belie the government’s attempt to united its 1.4 billion people around the president’s vision of a ‘Chinese Dream’.

The detention of over a million people in far Western Xinjiang region, in concentration camps that the Chinese government describes as re-education centres, has caused international outrage and condemnation.

And months of protests in Hong Kong have shown that not all Chinese citizens support the direction in which the communist party is taking the country, effectively offering economic prosperity without political freedoms.

To prevent anything marring the special day, there has also been a fierce crackdown among those who criticise the government. Normally outspoken activists and critics have been ordered not to speak to foreign media.

Some, who have expressed support for the Hong Kong protests, have had to promise they won’t travel to the city until well after the anniversary.

In Hong Kong, official celebrations were muted, including a morning flag raising ceremony closed to the public, with guests and dignitaries watching from a live broadcast inside a conference centre, where a reception was held afterwards.

A small group of demonstrators gathered outside with a banner saying “There is no national celebration, only national mourning. End one party rule.”

Larger protests linked to the city’s nearly four-month old movement were expected in the afternoon, although they were refused police permission for an official march. Thousands are expected to come out into the streets anyway, with fears of violence.

At least three of Hong Kong’s metro stations were closed, and with protests expected to spread across the city many shopping centres will shut to avoid becoming battlegrounds.

A young lady has shared a very disturbing story with Shirley E.F Tibilla aka Cookie Tee host of Tales from the Powder Room on GHOne TV on this week’s episode.

According to the young lady who is 34 years old and married with 2 children, she has been sleeping her own father since she was 18 years old.

The young lady whose identity was not disclosed revealed that her father is the biological father of all her two children but her husband does not know any of that.

She went on to explain that, her mother found out when she was 22 years old and died shortly after that. She has since had the death of her mother on her conscience.

The young lady went on to explain that, all her past relationships failed because she was never satisfied with any of their sexual prowess as she always preferred her dad.

A judge has ordered a convicted child rapist to look at his now teenaged victim as she told the court of the terrifying knifepoint attack he forced her to endure on her way to school.

NSW District Court judge David Wilson on Friday told the man – a father-of-three who cannot be named for legal reasons – to open his eyes as he sat in the dock listening to the girl read out her victim impact statement.

He said he might be embarrassed and ashamed but had to face the reality of his “hideous offending”.

“You may be ashamed and embarrassed, but keep your eyes open and look at the witness,” the judge said in court.

After the girl, now aged 14, read aloud and through tears her statement, the details of which were suppressed so as not to cause her undue stress, Judge Wilson praised her “enormous courage” for facing her “evil” attacker.

Dressed in a ‘leafy ghillie’ camouflage suit, the man grabbed the then 12-year-old from behind and dragged her into bushland as she made her way to school on the state’s Central Coast in May 2017.

He then tied her to a tree and sexually assaulted her.

The man pleaded guilty to a total of 10 charges – seven involving the attack and three, the grooming and sexual abuse of another girl, aged 11, between August 2016 and April 2017.

The 12-year-old victim had been walking along a track when she looked back and saw him suddenly emerge from the bushes armed with a large tree branch and a knife.

When she pleaded “stop, stop, stop”, he put her in a headlock and forced her into the scrub.

The man told the girl, ”Shhh, don’t scream. Don’t scream or I’ll have to hurt you.”

Holding the knife in his right hand, he tied her hands and feet with cable ties before lashing her to the tree and abusing her for almost an hour.

After he cut her loose, the girl ran crying hysterically to school.

The man arrived at work about 9.30am after failing to reply to several text messages and phone calls from colleagues.

With dirt, grass and tree matter on his clothes, he claimed to have been involved in a road rage incident where he’d chased another driver into the bush and fallen down an embankment.

The man’s sentencing hearing continues on Tuesday.

A 30-year-old woman, Adenike, was on Tuesday arraigned in an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly beating her mother-in-law into a coma.

Adenike, whose address was not provided, is charged with attempted murder.

The prosecutor, Insp. Bankole Olasunkanmi told the court that the defendant committed the offence on September 9 at Ado-Ekiti.

Olasunkanmi said that the defendant attacked her 63-year-old mother-in-law, Mrs Comfort.

He said that the victim was still in a coma.

Olasunkanmi said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 320 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2012.

He urged the Court to remand the defendant in prison pending legal advice from the office of Director of Public Prosecutions.

The plea of the defendant was not taken.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Abdulhamid Lawal remanded the defendant and adjourned the case until October 17th 2019 for mention.

A 6-year-old Florida schoolgirl was handcuffed and arrested after she kicked a school staff member and this has led to an outrage.

The child, named Kaia, who suffers from sleep apnea, was arrested, cuffed and fingerprinted after she threw a kicking tantrum in her Orlando elementary school class. She was then charged with battery.

“She was charged with battery!” an angry Meralyn Kirkland, the child’s grandmother, told WFLA-TV.

Kirkland said her grandchild suffers from sleep apnea, a condition she is working on managing through medication, and was acting out from sleep deprivation. She said her granddaughter should never have been hauled off from her school in handcuffs.

The girl’s grandmother said she was horrified to learn Kaia was arrested on Thursday, September 19, after she kicked a staff member at the Lucious and Emma Nixon Elementary charter school.

After her arrest, Kaia was placed in handcuffs and driven 8 miles to Orlando’s Juvenile Detention Center, where she was fingerprinted and had her mug shot taken, the report said.

Kirkland said she received a call from someone at the elementary school informing her the child was in police custody.

“‘What do you mean she was arrested?’ ” Kirkland remembered saying during the unbelievable call.

“He said, ‘There was an incident and she kicked somebody and she is being charged and she is on her way.'”

Kirkland added: “No six-year-old child should be able to tell somebody that they had handcuffs on them and they were riding in the back of a police car and taken to a juvenile center to be fingerprinted, mug shot.”

Kaia was one of two children arrested that day. The other is an eight-year-old child.

A pregnant woman was hacked to death while her husband was savagely stabbed as they slept in their bed during a family break at a luxury South African holiday resort.

Karen Turner, 31, who was three months pregnant, was sleeping with her husband Matthew, 33, and their toddler son Hayden, 2, when they were attacked at about 3am on Tuesday, September 17.

Two men armed with knives sneaked into their self-contained lodge overlooking the beach and attacked them.

Matthew was stabbed repeatedly as he lay beside his wife at the Hluleka Nature Reserve in the Eastern Cape province of the country, The Sun UK reports.

It is believed school teacher Karen, from Underberg, about three hours west of Durban, died almost instantly while Matthew managed to fight back.

Karen’s unborn child was killed in the attack. Her 23-month-old son Hayden survived and was uninjured.

Friends who were on holiday with them were woken by the sounds of a struggle and Hayden screaming.

It is unclear what the motive was for the horrific murder.

The South African police say one suspect is being hunted and his arrest is imminent. The second attacker has yet to be identified.

Karen’s older brother Ian Crouch told News24 that he had spoken to his brother-in-law when he came out of life saving surgery after being airlifted to Pietermaritzburg Hospital.

He told News24: “Matthew’s recollection was that he was woken up by being stabbed in the stomach by a guy on his side of the bed and there was another chap stabbing my sister.

“He said he managed to sort of grab the guy and there was a tussle down the stairs.”

Mr Crouch said he drove to the scene which he described as a “blood bath” and said the balcony door was open and the windows on latches as it was a hot night and there was no forced entry.

He confirmed it appeared nothing had been stolen and their mobiles were by their bed.

Mr Crouch also said his sister died a day after celebrating her 31st birthday.

A Nigerian lady who shared her story on Twitter narrated how she once, out of love, single handedly cooked a goat stolen by her then boyfriend and his friends.

The lady identified as Dejoke on the platform wrote on how she was so naive and carried away with love, thinking she would end up as his wife.

Unfortunately, he is married now, but to another woman who even happened to be his ex-girlfriend. And the wife does not even do half of what she used to do then while they were in school.

A Florida man allegedly killed his wife and their four children and then stored the bodies at his home and in his van for several weeks before taking their remains to Georgia, the local Sheriff’s Office said.

Casei Jones, 32, and her children, who range in age from 1 to 10, were last seen about six weeks ago in the Ocala, Florida, area, the sheriff’s office said. Her family reported them missing on Saturday night, police said.

Detectives identified Jones’ husband, Michael Wayne Jones Jr., 38, as a suspect. On Sunday, Michael Jones crashed his van near Brantley County in southeast Georgia, about 240km north of Jones’ last known Florida address.

Deputies “smelled a foul odour” coming from Michael Jones’ van, according to a Brantley County Sheriff’s Office press release.

“You may want to put me in handcuffs,” Jones told deputies, the release says, indicating there was a body in the vehicle.

Casei Jones’ body was found in her husband’s van, according to a Marion County press release.
Michael Jones later led Georgia Bureau of Investigations agents to Charlton County, where the remains of his four children were apparently found, officials said.

Jones was arrested by Brantley County authorities on charges of driving with a suspended/revoked license, weaving over a roadway and being a fugitive of justice.

Marion County officials said a warrant for second-degree murder charges has been issued for Jones’ arrest. More charges may come, officials said.

“True evil poked its head up here in Marion County,” Sheriff Billy Woods said.

“That’s about the only best way to describe it.”

Nigerian artiste, Burna Boy refunded the ticket money of an audience in the crowd during his show in Atlanta USA.

Burna Boy who said he was not impressed with the guy, brought out money from his pocket while on stage, to refund the show goer his money for ticket and asked that he goes back home.

The Ye crooner called on security to see the guy out of the show or to the back of the crowd because he didn’t want to see the guy in front close to the stage anymore.

Burna insisted he puts his blood, sweat and tears into his music and does it from the buttom of his his heart for fans and so anyone that is not a fan at the show or just came for a fashion show should not attend his show but the church.
