I think we can have polarising viewpoints on movies....No?.

For the hype and praises it is getting, imo, the actual movie is nothing close to that. I was expecting some kind of depth, but it's all just surface and lacked any form of originality or "freshness" that Neon indie films tends to stand for. Nothing particularly stands out in the flick tbh, too generic for the Oscar and award shouts it is getting.

Same thing with "The Florida Project" (2017) by the same filmmaker, it was praised to the high heavens,.only for me to see it and it was a total borefest.
we can have polarising viewpoints on movies... Of course and I can also disagree with your viewpoint. Probably you may have to understand after a 2nd watch🤷🏾‍♂️. It's not a perfect movie in anyway but it's definitely not a 5

ANORA.......8.9/10

A thrilling watch from start to finish. Didn't expect it to be this sexüally expl!c!t but it was refreshing.

It's a story about a forbidden love story between a strippér and a Russian oligarch's son. Really cool cinematography and lighting. Wildly funny and enjoyable. Rich writing and acting..... I loved the organic mixture of English and Russian in the movie. Fitted so perfectly between the characters interchanging between English and their ancestral Russian.
The movie isn't really deep on delivering a message but more focused on personal journeys and wild adventure. It's a look into the lives of immigrants and séx workers. A richly put together piece of storytelling.

The sexual tension between Anora and Igor was well done and performed. Kudos to the writer-director Sean Baker.

There's a subplot of having all the money in the world won't buy you a woman's affection. Igor didn't do much except for a few gestures and still secured the kitty.

Mikey Madison surely has Hollywood's gaze firmly set on her. Arguably one of the best movies of the year and I can see the hype.
I had mad fun watching this.

I just watchd the Superman teaser at a private screening. Coming by 9am this morning tho. It has Tenet color grading and feels like a Nolan movie. Very emotional trailer

This isn't the right section for this. I play PC games, i just finished Detroit Becomes Human yesterday. Although I have finishing the game 3 times previously with a different ending. This is my 4th time with a different ending.

The gameplay was really good and the graphics was an eye candy. You get to make decisions that affect the outcome of the game.
The Gaming Section sucks. DBH is too short

Gladiator 2: 9/10

Now this is GOATED, easily the best movie of 2024 I've seen so far.
Adrenaline pumping Action/fight scenes ✔️
Well written Story ✔️
Jaw dropping Cinematography ✔️
Moviescore ✔️
Dialogue ✔️
Star-Studded Cast ✔️

Although I felt the movie was rushed, a series would have done justice to the story. I would have loved to see more of this villainy side of Denzel Washington. His performance was charismatic and really stood out. In most scenes he even overshadowed the protagonist. The fight scene with Lucius if that isn't a stunt double then the old man still got lots of juice left in him, i was expecting him to be struck down as fast as possible with one strike but he held his ground.
7/10 at best

Honest Question -
What's wrong with the Gaming Section in Nairaland here?
Is it that no one plays PC Games or PS4 and 5 games here or gaming is not a massive thing in Nigeria there because I'm an avid gamer 👀.

MR. Robot (S1-S4) (2015–2019)

// Hello, friend. Initiating a system reboot...

I had numerous false starts with this show. The premise seemed like such a clusterfvck that I couldn’t wrap my head around it or, to put it more conveniently, I didn’t have the mental mantle to fully grasp it. But a few days ago, I decided to give it my undivided attention. Right off the bat, I can confidently say this is one of the best shows ever made. It has earned a spot in the upper echelons of the greatest TV experiences I’ve ever had.

At its core, Mr. Robot follows Elliot Alderson, a socially awkward cybersecurity engineer by day who moonlights as a vigilante hacker. Recruited by the enigmatic Mr. Robot, Elliot sets out to dismantle oppressive corporate America, represented by the monolithic E Corp. As the plot unfolds, it becomes clear that this revolution is just a backdrop for Elliot's larger battle......with himself.

On the surface, it might seem like a show tailored for programmers and ethical (or unethical!) hackers.. However, at its heart, Mr. Robot caters to everyone. With its brilliant writing, it explores themes and metaphors that mirror the human condition in profound and relatable ways.

The show examines how corporations hold people hostage, exerting incredible influence over their daily lives. It’s a sobering critique of modern systems of power and oppression. At the same time, Mr. Robot dives deeply into mental health and identity. Elliot’s dissociative identity disorder is central to the story. Mr. Robot, revealed as a manifestation of Elliot’s father, embodies his fractured psyche and coping mechanisms. The series portrays mental health with nuance, showing Elliot’s struggles with empathy and authenticity in a way that feels raw and real.

One of the defining traits of Mr. Robot is its unreliable narration. Elliot’s perspective constantly challenges viewers to question what’s real, mirroring his fragmented sense of reality. The show’s brilliant use of fourth-wall breaks pulls us into Elliot’s world as his confidants. As we watch idly for four seasons, the show makes us complicit, a metaphor for real life, where people often endure mental anguish while the world looks on and moves forward.

Despite its dark tone, Mr. Robot is ultimately about connection. Elliot’s bond with his sister Darlene provides an emotional anchor, while his relationships with other characters add layers of meaning to his journey and the show’s conclusion.

Sam Esmail’s direction and style elevate Mr. Robot into a unique art form. The cinematography often frames characters in isolated corners, reflecting the show’s themes of disconnection and loneliness. Mac Quayle’s electronic soundtrack heightens the tension and perfectly matches the show’s tone. The twists, including the revelation of Mr. Robot’s true identity and the final twist about Elliot himself, are masterfully executed and unforgettable.

Rami Malek delivers a stunning performance, capturing Elliot’s vulnerability and quiet intensity. In a lighter vein, his portrayal was almost too good and one might wonder if this loner and depressed persona mirrors his real life, potentially leading to typecasting. Regardless, Malek’s performance cements Elliot as one of the most iconic TV characters.

I believe no media is perfect, and Mr. Robot is no exception. The pacing in Season 2 is brutally slow, leaving you in a metaphorical "mind prison." It’s easy to feel tempted to drop the show at this point. Additionally, while the character arcs and development are among the finest in TV history, Tyrell Wellick’s storyline though brilliantly written, feels unresolved and leaves much to be desired by the series’ end.

Mr. Robot is more than a story about hacking or societal rebellion. It’s a profound meditation on identity, trauma, and the human spirit. Its audacious storytelling and execution cement its place as one of the most groundbreaking series in recent history.

That said, this is not an easy watch. It goads you, baits you, and challenges your perception of what’s happening. Just when you think you’ve figured things out, the door closes again, and you’re left in a loop of the unknown. Some might even argue that it requires an acquired taste to truly enjoy. But I urge you to persevere, it’s worth it in the end. The series delivers all the answers in one of the most satisfying finales ever.

This is an all-timer. Brilliant, brilliant show. 👏🏿

Rating: 9/10
Reading this makes me want to rewatch this. A masterclass of a show with no bad seasons unlike others

"Wicked has the potential to easily make $1bn"

"It is the most popular musical in the US, Asia and Europe"

Yet, na another thing entirely I dey see. grin grin
You have to understand that, while some IPs can be very popular, some are demographically, geographically and culturally tied.

I always knew this was a typical vibes and insha'Allah North American flick. 😅
Bro😭😭 What I meant by easily is 'it was an easy decision to pick wicked over joker not it could make 1 bill easily

The hype for the Wicked movie here in the US is insane you guys don't understand and the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. It had the potential to make a billion

By the way....
phr0nesis:
You posted around October that it was receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews, so bro your expectation was already high. And as for the total gross, $700m is a huge success, but still, it pales in comparison to your "easy $1b prediction". You also spoke about its popularity outside the US.
This is what I said brother - I never said an easy 1 bill- I said it has the potential to. Also as a guy who doesn't enjoy musicals - my expectations were low but it exceeded my expectations even as a musical

phr0nesis:
Low expectations?
You've been hyping that movie long before it was released. In fact, it's currently performing below your projection
In what sense? I know I said it could make a billion ofc the only thing stopping it from doing that is it’s international market- it’s on track to make 700 million minimum 👀 won't you call that a success? Besides I never said anything about how good the film will be and I had low expectations concerning how good it'll be now it's actually an Oscar contender...... So what's your point

Even when watching films that have received positive reviews, they often fail to meet the high expectations set by others. SMILE 2 is the first movie in which I have genuinely felt engrossed since August this year.
The only movie that blew my expectations is Wicked probably because I had low expectations

Venom; the last dance. 2/10

I felt like I was watching a looney tunes cartoon! Everything in the movie was wacky and disjointed.

The jokes didn't land. The plot didn't make sense. If Venom just stayed in Eddie, the film would have ended immediately.

Worse off, no cameo from other Marvel characters.

It is like they just wanted to kill off venom. I feel that this movie was inspired by Joker folie e deux.

Why is Marvel (sony) trying to flop like DC?
It's not that bad. Switch off your brain - there are still some moments that are entertaining

As in eh... When I read the synopsis and watched the trailer. I felt NAH not gonna spend my time watching this.

Then I came here and started seeing high ratings and sweet talks. I was like, well let's go for it, maybe I was wrong about it.

Horror is cool genre but I hardly feel horrored or scared because I know it's all acting. But a better acting can get to you sometimes. Great horror movies that have actually gave my heart a skip is Autopsy of Jane Doe, The Substance, and one or two others I can't remember now.
Your heart skipped a beat while watching The Substance? is it the same film we watched😭😂 how can your heart skip a beat to body horror with no eerie music or jump scares. Scream 2 is a perfect movie for that bro. One of the scariest movies of this year
