The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the September 21st election in Edo State, Distinguished Senator Monday Okpebholo, says it is a sacrilege for anyone to drag his father into the market square and then attempt to settle the matter secretly thereafter.


Okpebholo, who spoke in faraway America while addressing Edo people in the diaspora, said he would establish a fully-fledged diaspora office to oversee the interests and well-being of Edo citizens living abroad.


A statement by the Senator Monday Okpebholo Campaign Organization, signed by its Director of Media and Publicity, Mr. John Mayaki, said, “The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo Oba Ewuare II, is our father, and we will consult him on every issue when I become governor,” Okpebholo said while reacting to a question on what he would do differently towards the Oba of Benin when he becomes governor, in contrast to the hostile attitude of Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Okpebholo said, “The Oba is the father of all. You cannot drag him out into the market square and later pretend to want to settle with him in secret. This is a sacrilege. When I become governor, I will do things differently and consult the Oba on every issue concerning the people and the state.”

On Edo people in the diaspora, the APC candidate said, “I don’t think the government has been fair to them. There is this Diaspora Commission Establishment Bill of 2017 that has been passed into law by the federal government. When I become the governor of Edo State, I will adopt it and establish a fully-fledged diaspora office to oversee the interests and well-being of our citizens living abroad. This would be done through an executive bill.”

Okpebholo said, “This diaspora office would be responsible for identifying, coordinating, and organizing diasporans who wish to contribute to the welfare and development of Edo State. The idea is that this office would enhance closer ties and expedite development within the state and its diaspora, to be managed by a diaspora focal person in the agency or commission.

“We will give priority to Diaspora affairs because we have a lot of our people scattered abroad, excelling in various ways, and willing to contribute to state and national development.”

*APC Call for Cancellation of Continuous Voters Registration Exercise in Edo State*

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State calls for the cancellation of the Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise scheduled by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to kick off in our state, this Monday May 26, 2024.

The several compelling reasons behind our call for the cancellation of the CVR exercise in Edo State are as follows:

*1. Compromised INEC Officials:*
We have received credible intelligence indicating that certain officials within the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have been compromised and are colluding with the outgoing Edo State government to manipulate the voter registration process in favor of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP).

*2. Deployment of Biased Ad Hoc Staff:*
The decision by Governor Godwin Obaseki to deploy Edo teachers, civil servants, as well as members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as ad hoc staff for the CVR exercise is unacceptable to us. These personnel have been compromised to favor the PDP.

*3. Manipulation of Voter Registration Data:*
We have reports that the outgoing Governor Obaseki and his associates are actively engaged in efforts to manipulate voter registration data to inflate the voters register in favor of the PDP.

This includes attempts to register underage voters and transfer voters from neighboring states, like Delta, Lagos, Ondo and others to distort the Voters Register and disenfranchising legitimate voters on election day.

*4. Extensive damage to the INEC premises*
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Edo State, has officially alerted the public of the unprecedented damage inflicted upon its facilities and equipment (especially the IVED as a result of heavy rainfall on Friday night, when a torrential downpour hit Benin City, resulting in severe flooding and damage to the Commission's perimeter fence with the resultant destroyed, submerging of sensitive materials in floodwater. INEC REC confirmed that all offices located downstairs of the building, including the crucial ICT building, were completely inundated.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Edo State, Dr. Anugbum Onuoha, himself has rightfully acknowledged that the INEC Benin City headquarters has suffered significant damage to its functionality, as a result. The Commission cannot therefore pretend to be determined to ensure that the CVR exercise proceeds as scheduled. This is unacceptable to us as an interested party.

We reject the planned use of the Ikpoba Okha INEC LGA office located at 16 Customs Road, off Benin/Auchi Road, Benin City as temporary "State Headquarters" for the Commission so the CVR can go on.

We also condemn the plan of bringing in additional machines from neighboring states including Delta and Bayelsa. These are all premedidated and only confirms our earlier position that the Edo State PDP chairman, Mr. Tony Aziegbemi has hired his wife, (former Mrs. Annette Umeh) who is a Director in INEC's Bayelsa ICT office to pre-fill names in the data capturing machine.

In the existing circumstances, we believe the wise option for INEC is the immediate cancellation of the CVR exercise and prioritize the safety and well-being of its staff and the general public more than anything else.

INEC must address the aftermath of the flooding squarely and restore its operations to full functionality before resuming any electoral activities. This is our demand.

Any attempt to proceed with the CVR exercise under current conditions would not only jeopardize the integrity of the voter registration process but also undermine the trust and confidence of the Edo electorate in the electoral system. We demand to be heard.
